어제 그리핀이 IG한테 탑차이로 3:1을 당하고 난 뒤, 좀 여론이 진정되었을거라 생각하고 다른 롤 커뮤니티를 눈팅해보니까 소드 선수의 실력 가지고 논쟁이 있더라구요 소드는 원래 못하는 탑이다. 아니다 잘하는 탑이었다 기억을 왜곡하지마라 사이온 우르곳 오른 오졌던거 생각 못하나? 아니다 그 정도는 저런 팀원들 데리고 하면 누구나 한다 마침 딱 좋은 소재라고 생각해서, 몇가지 예시를 들어 롤판에서 선수의 실력을 평가할때 반드시 고려해 야하지만 쉽게 혼동/간과되는 매우 중요한 개념을 설명해보고자 합니다. * 참고로 소드 선수가 인간적으로 씨맥에게 큰 잘못을 했다 이런 생각을 전혀 가지고 있지 않습니다. 둘 사이의 일은 둘만 알 수 있는거죠. 소드 선수가 인터뷰로 팬들을 화나게 한건 아쉬운 일이라고 생각하지만, 둘 사이에 있었던 일만 가지고 비난하거나 할 생각은 없습니다. 글에서는 게임내적인 얘기만 할거지만, 소드선수에게 유리한 내용은 아닐거 같아 미리 적어둡니다. 1. 페이커와 피레안 2018년 서머 시즌에 SKT는 플레이오프는 커녕 승강전에 가서 롤드컵 선발전에 갈 극한의 위기에 빠지게됩니다. 특히나 팀의 에이스인 페이커 선수가 스프링에 이어 2연속으로 부진하고 안일한 모습을 보여주면서, 결국 이지훈이 있던 2015년 이후 오랜만에 피레안에게 주전 자리를 빼앗기게 되죠. 시즌 마지막 경기 오리아나로 참사를 만들기전까지 피레안 선수는 충분히 자기몫을 해냈고, 팀을 승강전 위기에서 구출하는데 성공하고, 페이커 선수는 선발전에 돌아와 나름 괜찮은 모습을 보여줬지만 결국 가을 젠지에 막혀 본인의 부활을 증명하진 못하고 시즌이 끝나버리죠. 이 시점에 서머 시즌 후반에 피레안과 페이커중에 누가 더 잘했을까요? 아마 피레안이라고 생각하는 분이 많을거에요. 오리아나 말아먹은 게임을 제외하고 보면 피레안은 게임의 패인이 된 케이스는 많지 않았고, 승리에 1등으로 기여한 게임은 꽤 되거든요. 반면 페이커는 서머 시즌 막바지엔 명백히 본인이 패배의 1등공신이었던 게임이 잦았습니다. 근데 그럼에도 불구하고 다음 시즌 페이커는 최고의 대우로 SKT와 재계약을 했고, 피레안 선수는 LCK에도 잔류하지 못하고 LEC로 돌아가게 되었죠. 이 차이는 어디서 왔을까요? 스타성만으로 SKT가 페이커와 재계약을 한게 아니란건 올 시즌 페이커 선수가 폼으로 증명하고 있죠. 혹자들은 이걸 클래스의 차이라고 말합니다. 폼은 일시적이지만,. 클래스는 영원하다. 다른 스포츠에서 지겹게 증명된 / 써먹고 있는 명제긴 한데, 대체 롤에서 '클래스' 라는게 뭘 말하는걸까요? 왜 페이커가 열경기 가까이 부진하고 피레안이 열경기 가까이 선전해도 페이커와 피레안의 클래스는 좁혀지지 않을까요? 그게 이번 글에서 알아볼 부분입니다. 2. 래피드스타, 애로우, 그리고 트할 이 세명의 닉만 봐도 떠오르는 공통점이 하나 있을겁니다. 맞아요. 동 포지션에서 CS를 못 먹기로 유명한 선수들이죠. 빠른별은 다른 탑급 미드가 분당 CS 10개를 돌파해서 CS를 만들어먹는다는 소리를 들을때 (프로겐, 알렉스이치, 엠비션, 바야흐로 파밍의 시대였죠) 혼자 고고하게 10분동안 CS 80개도 못 먹었음에도 한타때 열심히 분전하던 빠른별의 모습을 기억하시는분들이 많을거에요. 애로우와 트할도 마찬가지입니다. CS는 못 먹지만, 한타가 되면 자기 몫을 한다는 평을 받는 선수들이죠. 앞의 둘은 정말 많은 선수들이 꿈꾸던 LCK 우승이라는 위업을 달성한 선수들입니다. 우승할때 버스를 탔느냐? 아니에요. 분명히 팀의 플랜에서 1옵션까진 아니여도 핵심적인 역할을 맡고 있었고 그걸 잘 수행해내서 우승한 선수들이죠. 근데 우승 이후에 빠별 / 애로우가 '최고' 라는 평을 받았냐면 그건 아닙니다. 좋은 계약을 했냐? 그것도 역시 아니죠. 소속팀을 떠난 이후엔 한두단계 클래스가 낮은 곳으로 이적했고, 실제로 결국 스스로의 기량을 계속 증명해내지 못하고 말았죠. 트할도 마찬가지구요. 다들 그 이유가 '라인전이 약해서', 혹은 '기초체급이 약해서' 라는 표현을 씁니다. 근데 라인전이 약하고 기초체급이 약해도 한타때 잘해서 그걸 메꿀 수 있으면 될테고, 실제로 트할은 한화에서 그걸 생각하고 계약을 했을거에요. 근데 한화에 가서도 일견 몇번 번뜩이는 모습을 보이긴 했지만, 계속 주전 자리를 잡기는 쉽지 않았습니다. 3. 소드와 블랭크 소드는 센세이셔널한 그리핀의 2018 서머 데뷔 이후 그리핀이 정규시즌 2위-1위-1위, 최종성적 2위-2위-2위를 기록하는 동안 수많은 좋은 모습을 보여줬습니다. 오른 사이온으로 멋진 이니시를 걸기도 하고, 제이스를 잡고 상대 캐리를 억제하기도 하고, 우르곳을 잡고 탑에서 예측불가능한 솔킬을 내며 탑라인을 유리하게 가져가기도 했어요. 이걸 부정할 수는 없습니다. 시청자들이 바보도 아니고, 소드가 계속 꾸준히 어제같은 모습을 보여줬으면, 우호적인 여론이 있을수가 없습니다. 블랭크도 마찬가지입니다. 2016년 데뷔시즌 블랭크는 페이커와 함께 MVP를 양분할정도로 좋은 모습을 보여줬고, 망가지기전에는 상당히 잘하는 정글러였습니다. 망가지고, 역캐리머신이 되었지만, 다음해에는 살아나서 피넛을 제치고 팀내 정글 1옵션을 꿰차면서 잼구나이트라는 변명을 얻기도 했죠. 좋은 모습을 많이 보여준 선수에요. 물론 프로중에 정말 손에 꼽힐정도로 저점이 낮았던 선수지만, 그리고 할때는 하는 모습을 많이 보여줬습니다. 심지어 최고의 무대인 롤드컵에서조차 멋지게 활약한 게임이 있죠. 그러나 활약한 경기수가 아무리 쌓이고 쌓여도 이 선수들에 평가가 많이 올라가는 일은 없습니다. 좋은 팀 메이트를 두었으니까? 애초에 활약한 경기가 많으면 이들이 그 '좋은 팀메이트' 와 비슷한 평가를 받는게 인지상정 아닐까요? 4. 리그 오브 레전드는 '공연'이다. 가수가 무대에서 노래를 잘했을때, 연기자들이 무대에서 최고의 연기를 보여줬을때 보통 우리는 좋은 공연을 봤다고 합니다만, 사실 공연을 구성하는게 그렇게 단순한게 아니죠. 대관한 장소부터 시작해서, 음향, 소품, 특수효과, 구성, 조명, 등등. 좋은 공연을 만들기 위해서는 그 만큼 좋은 '환경'을 구성할 필요가 있습니다. 경연자가 아무리 잘났어도 환경이 쓰레기면 좋은 공연이 나올수가 없어요. 예술에 전당에서야 마이크가 박살나도 경연자가 잘하면 어느정도 커버가 되지만, 상암에서 콘서트 하는데 마이크가 안 나온다고 생각해보세요. 조용필 마이클잭슨을 불러도 뒷자리에 앉은 사람들은 목소리 한번 못 듣고 최악의 경험을 하게 되죠. 롤도 마찬가지입니다. 한타와 교전, 후반 스플릿 단계가 '본 공연', 즉 가수가 나와서 노래를 하고, 연기자가 나와서 클라이막스에 감정을 쏟아내는 기승전결의 '전' 이라고 한다면, 밴픽 페이즈와 라인전, 극초반 오브젝트 소규모 교전은 그 본 공연을 성공적으로 준비하기 위한 '환경'을 구성하는 단계라고 할 수 있습니다. 서로 환경을 잘 구성에서, 준비한 공연을 하는데, 더 잘하는 팀이 이기는거죠. 이 개념으로 소위 말하는 '클래스' 라는 개념, 그리고 기초 체급이 약한 선수들이 결코 씬내에서 좋은 평가를 받지 못하는 이유, 이뤄낸 업적에 비해 과소평가를 받는 이유를 모두 설명 할 수 있습니다. 페이커나 데프트 같은 선수들은, 존재만으로도 이미 환경 구성에서 반 이상 먹고 가는 선수들입니다. 데프트가 아무리 몇게임씩 고연포 믿고 앞에서 깔짝대다 짤리고, 페이커가 귀환을 몇게임 연속으로 안일하게 타다가 죽어도, 이런건 공연으로 치면 그냥 가수가 삑사리 몇번 낸것에 불과합니다. 이미 상대 팀은 밴픽 페이즈에서부터 아 페이커네, 플레이 메이킹 되는 챔피언을 주면 곤란해, 르블랑을 주면 곤란해, 조이를 주면 곤란해, 데프트네? 후반 캐리 싸움 못 가겠네? 하는 프레셔를 받고 게임을 시작해서, 초중반부터 이 선수들이 성장을 하면 게임이 위험하다는 것을 끊임없이 의식하며 게임을 하게 됩니다. 칸 같은 선수들은 CS만 보면 라인전 반반을 가는것처럼 보여도, 실제로는 라인을 항상 먼저 밀고 적 정글을 찾고 와드를 깊숙히 박아줍니다. 쵸비나 쇼메이커 같은 선수들은 같은 숫자의 웨이브를 먹어도 CS 실수가 없어서 성장 기대치 차이로 인한 프레셔를 상대가 받게 만들고, 타잔 같은 선수들도 그냥 생각없이 정글만 돌다간 동선수준에서 게임이 꼬이게 만들죠. 이런 선수들은 그냥 존재만으로도 예술의 전당이고, 특급 음향 시스템인거에요. 여기서 한 술 더 뜨는, 현재의 더샤이나 클리드 같은 진짜배기 미친놈들이 가끔 나오는데, 이 선수들은 그냥 아예 상대팀의 공연장에 폭탄을 쏴서 박살을 내서 상대가 공연을 할 생각도 못한다고 볼 수 있죠. 위에서 말한 빠른별 ,트할, 애로우 같은 선수들은, 공연장을 구성할떄는 스탭들한테 잔소리하고 괜히 걸리적 거리면서 동선이나 방해하는 가수라고 생각하시면 됩니다. 본 공연이 시작하면 허슬을 보여주지만, 그 전까지는 소위 말해서 아무 쓸모가 없거나, 마이너스가 되는거에요. 트할이 한타때 케넨으로 5인궁을 멋있게 박을 수 있는 그 이면에는, 탑이 뒤지게 쳐맞고 있음에도 그 타이밍에 게임이 아예 복구할 수 없는 수준으로 망가지지 않게 할 수 있는, 팀원들이 구성해준 '환경' 이 있는거죠. 5. 다시 소드로 돌아와 소드가 수많은 게임을 활약했음에도 불구하고 평이 오르지 않는 이유, 그리고 씨브이맥스가 소드의 현재 기량이 도란보다 나음에도 불구하고 소드를 기용하지 않았던 이유도 마찬가지입니다. 소드는 아주 극단적인 케이스는 아니지만, 결국 작동하는 구조 자체는 트할이랑 별로 다를게 없는 선수거든요. 본인을 위해 판이 깔리면 그 누구보다도 잘 활약할 수 있지만, 사전 환경을 구성하는 준비 단계에서는 무대가 높아질수록 자력으로 환경을 구성하긴 커녕 오히려 방해만 안하면 다행인 수준이 되는, 체급적인 약점이 분명한 선수라는거죠. 아닌데? 소드는 라인전 못하는 편 아닌데? 위에서 말했지만 특히 2019시즌은 '밴픽 페이즈' 부터가 중요합니다. 소드는 잘 다룰 수 있는 챔이 너무 한정적이에요. 소드가 자기가 잘하는 챔프를 가지고 상성이 아주 나쁘지 않은 챔프를 만나면 라인전을 잘하긴 합니다. 그래도 아마추어 시절부터 진검승부에 대한 감이 아예 없는 선수가 아니고, 짬에서 나오는 바이브가 좀 있었던거죠. 소드 봉풀주 우르곳 솔킬 스페셜이 증명하구요. 근데 프로와서 발전이 없어도 너무 없었습니다. 저는 씨맥이 소드가 게을러서 향상심이 부족했다 이런 얘기를 한걸 특별히 믿지는 않습니다만, 이유가 뭐가 됐건간에 소드 선수는 프로가 된 이후에는 발전한 구석이 거의 없다시피 한게 맞아요. 여전히 쓸 수 있는 챔피언으로만 쓸 수 있는 챔피언 상대로만 제 몫을 할 수 있었습니다. 동년배인 칸을 생각해보세요 2018 서머의 칸하고 2019 서머의 칸은 아예 다른 선수가 되었다고 할 정도로 챔프폭의 차이가 납니다. 소드는? 거의 그대로죠. 커리어내내 소드에게 유리했던 점은, 그리핀의 나머지 4명이 정말 기초체급면에서 최상의 재원들이라는겁니다. 타잔 쵸비 바이퍼 리헨즈 모두요. 쵸비의 좁다는 평이 있지만 비교대상이 페이커였을뿐이고, 쵸비는 브루져 미드를 정말 잘 다루기 때문에 팀에 밴픽 페이즈에는 플러스 되는 부분이 더 많습니다. 바이퍼 리헨즈의 바텀픽 스펙트럼은 말이 필요 없죠. 롤 관련된 일을 하는 누구에게 물어봐도 저 선수들 탐 안난다고 하는 사람 없을겁니다. 당장 몇경기 부진해도, 내가 만져주면 진짜 대박칠거 같은데, 하는 생각을 하게 만드는 선수들이고, 이미 사실 정규시즌 2연속 1등으로 그 가치는 어느정도 증명했다고 봐야겠죠. 다만 소드에게 불리했던 점도 있습니다. 씨맥에겐 미안한 얘기지만, 그리핀은 밴픽을 정말 오지게 못하는 팀입니다. 씨맥의 문제만은 아닙니다. 왜냐면 씨맥이 나갔음에도 불구하고 독하게 구린 밴픽은 그대로였거든요 의미불명의 탑나르-미드뽀삐부터 이제는 안되는게 증명됐음에도 불구하고 미련을 놓지 못하는 소드의 제이스나 쵸비에게 오펜시브한 픽을 제때 쥐어주지 못하는 문제 다 그리핀이 지적받는 밴픽 문제 그대로였죠. 사실 저런건 그래도 소드 챔프폭, 라인전 수행 능력 때문에 어느정도 이해가 가는 측면이 있습니다만 결정적으로 '타잔의 정글픽' 만 봐도 그리핀이 얼마나 성의없고 허접한 밴픽을 하는지는 증명이 됩니다. 매번 망하면서도 주제파악 안되는 카서스부터 시작해서 사일러스 거르고 세주아니까지요. 애초에 씨맥이 아무리 잘해도 요새 프로씬 밴픽 싸움은 철인 혼자 커버할 수 있는 수준이 아닙니다. 제 기준 이번 시즌 밴픽 보자마자 욕 나온 횟수 1위 팀도 그리핀이고, 실제로 그 경기가 밴픽으로 터진 횟수 1위도 그리핀입니다.
