아이들이 취학할 때가 되면 선생님들이 팀을 짜서 입학 예정인 아이들의 집에 찾아옵니다. 하나하나 찾아가서 아이들을 미리 만나보고 잠시 대화를 나누지요. 아이들은 자기들이 그린 그림이나 좋아하는 장난감 따위를 선생님들에게 보여주고 자랑합니다. 학부모는 무엇을 어떻게 준비해야 할지 들으면서 또 자신들의 특별한 요구사항을 선생님들에게 전달하지요. 식이습관, 종교, 언어, 성격 등등. 1학년 수업은 태반이 노는 시간이에요. 우선 등교하자마자 (원하는 경우) 강당에 가서 zumba를 한 판 때리고 시작해요. 땀 한 번 빼고 교실로 돌아간 아이들은 각자 조그마한 화이트보드를 들고 글씨쓰기 연습을 하거나 셈 연습을 하...는 척 하다가 또 놀아요. 저학년 아이들을 위해 따로 마련된 운동장 (우리는 garden이라고 불렀어요)에서 축구하고 줄넘기하고 술래잡기하지요. 그리고 다시 교실로 돌아와 책을 읽어요. 책을 좀 읽었다 싶으면 점심시간. 점심은 늘 메뉴를 세 개 정도 준비해놓고 아이들에게 고르라고 해요. 우리가 기내식을 고를 때 '치킨? 포크? or 베지터리언?' 이야기를 듣는 거랑 완전 똑같음. 먹고 좀 놀다보면 또 뭔가 조금 하다가 다시 놀러나옵니다. 그러다보면 3시가 되고 일과 끝. 일과시간동안 공부 안하고 놀았으니까 일과가 끝나면 그때부터 본격적으로...! 놀아요. 부모들이 애들을 픽업해서 바로 귀가시키지 않고 대개 학교에 딸린 큰 놀이터에 던져두고 부모들끼리 놀면서 이렇게 열심히 놀아야 한다는 본을 보여줘요. 그러면 애들은 저리 가서 애들끼리 놀아요. 그렇게 놀리다가 귀가하면 대략 4시에서 5시 사이가 되고, 귀가후 저녁먹기 전에 짧은 책을 한 권 읽혀요. 그게 숙제거든요. 숙제는 독서숙제 하나인데, 1일 1권을 읽고 책 제목을 독서록에 기록하면 끝이에요. 그렇게 책을 읽고 나면 자기 전까지 또 놀아요. 학기 일정은 프로젝트 단위로 진행돼요. 첫 한 달 간은 바다동물 프로젝트, 그 다음 한 달은 환경보호, 그 다음 한 달은 로마, 그 다음 한 달은 공룡..... 이하 계속. 바다동물 프로젝트를 하는 동안 이것저것 자르고 붙여서 바닷속 환경 꾸미기를 하고, 바다생물 그리기를 하고, 책도 해양 관련 책을 보고, 노래/율동 시간에도 아기상어를 틀고, 비디오 시청 시간에도 니모 같은 걸 봐요. 프로젝트 마감일에는 (자원한 경우) 학급에서 PPT 발표도 해요. 제 아이의 경우는 바다생물이 등장하는 만화영화를 소개하는 PPT를 만들어서 발표했어요. 그리고 프로젝트 마감일에는 대망의 바다체험....두둥... 버스를 대절해서 본머스에 갔지요. 직접 바다에 들어가보기 전에는 바다 프로젝트가 아닌 것임. 여기서 가져온 바닷물과 모래 등을 이용해서 작은 유리병 (보통 딸기잼 병)을 바다속처럼 꾸며서 집에 가져오는데요, 이거 아직도 집에 있음요. 로마 기간이 되면 중저학년은 연극을 준비했고 고학년은 역사와 라틴어를 배웠어요. 제가 한국말 가르치던 애 하나가 기특하게도 로마연표랑 한국사 연표를 나란히 붙여서 만들어 발표하고 만점을 받았던 게 생각나네요. 대충 공화정 로마에다 고조선 써넣고 제정로마에다 삼국시대 ㅎㅎ 중간중간에 여러가지 짧은 이벤트도 들어갑니다. 일주일 전체를 로알드 달에 헌정하고 다들 소설속 인물들로 코스프레하고 등교한 것도 기억나요. 제 아이들은 무조건 BFG에 나오는 소피(Sophie)... 제일 쉽거든요. 걍 빅토리안 나이트 드레스 입혀서 보내고 대충 소피라고 하면 됨. 한 3년을 소피만 시켰더니 자기들도 이쁜거 해달라고 짜증내던데 뭐 그래도 소피...'ㅅ' 울 마누라는 귀찮은 건 질색이고 편한게 최고. 12월엔 크리스마스가 있으니 네이티비티 (Nativity) 뮤지컬, 5월엔 메이 댄스가 있어요. 적당히 명절 없는 즈음엔 자선 경매, 바자회 등을 했구요. 애들이 집에서 뭔가 만들어와서 판다고 내 놓으면 친구들이나 어른들이 와서 사주곤 했어요. 운동회도 참 많이 했는데... 잊을 만 하면 하더군요. 두달에 한 번은 했던 것 같아요. 한 달에 한 번 쯤은 포레스트 스쿨이라고 해서 온 몸에 방수세팅을 하고 교외로 나가서 숲 속에도 들락날락하고 진흙탕도 걸었어요. 이거 옷이랑 장화 관리가 좀 짱났지만 뭐 지들이 좋다니까... 중~고학년은 슬슬 악기를 하나씩 만지기 시작해요. 매주 수요일 아침에 전교 조회가 있는데, 입장시와 퇴장시에 꼭 학생을 시켜서 피아노를 치게 했어요. 밴드하는 애들이 연습이 좀 되면 걔들 발표회도 시켰구요. 4학년 애들이 한달 내내 (구) 박지성 응원가 멜로디 (오오오오, 지송빠레)를 연습했던 기억이 나네요. 애들 연극도 주로 이 조회 시간에 상연했어요. 이렇게 꾸준히 여러가지를 같이 준비하다보면 특정 분야에 확 꽂혀서 노는 애들이 나와요. 그러면 아주 좋은 거예요. 제 아이 하나는 일년 내내 무지개 그림만 그렸는데, 아무도 다른 걸 그려보라고 하지 않았어요. 특히 무지개가 잘 그려진 날이면 선생님들에게 선물하곤 했는데 그러면 선생님은 그 그림을 교실 벽에 붙여주었지요. 매일 한 권씩 읽는 독서숙제도 마찬가지인데, 똑같은 책을 수십 번을 반복해서 읽어도 다른 책을 읽으라고 강요하지 않았아요. 얼마 전에 확인해보니 아이가 그 책을 여전히 절반 정도는 외고 있더군요. 좋은 일이에요. 초등학교 고학년으로 올라가면 물론 (일반적인 의미에서) 학습 부담이 늘어나요. 그런데 무슨 특별한 학습을 하는 건 아니고... 주로 독서 부담이 늘지요. 수학은 한국보다 2~3년 이상 진도가 느리다고 보면 맞을 거예요. 별로 안가르침. 그런데 독서는 정말 장난 아니에요. 1학년 때 키퍼(kipper)의 모험류로 시작해서 2학년~3학년이 되면 로알드 달을 파고, 그 다음엔 문해력이 올라온 애들부터 순차적으로 해리포터로 넘어가요. 그리고 해리포터를 완독할 즈음엔 이제 알아서 이것저것 읽게 되지요. 2차학교(중등+고등학교)에 진학하게 되면 이제 슬슬 대입에 대비해야 합니다. 대체로 우리나이로 중3~고1 즈음이 되면 GCSE라는 시험을 치르는데, 원하는 과목을 골라서 보게 되어있어요. 외국어 과목을 하나 이상 넣는 게 일반적이지만 대여섯개씩 넣는 친구들도 봤어요. 음악이나 드라마 같은 과목도 넣는데 이건 실기평가가 포함되어있는 거예요. 악기 여러 개를 넣는 경우는 드물고 대개는 하나 정도 연습해서 시험을 봐요. 물론 제일 중요한 건 영어와 수학인데, 수학 수준은 비교적 높지 않았던 것 같은데 영어는 수준이 꽤 높았던 걸로 기억해요. GCSE는 (애들마다 다르지만) 대략 열 과목 정도를 봐요. 시험문제는 대충 이런 식. https://new.redtea.kr/?b=3&n=1689 GCSE를 보고 나면 대학 갈 애들은 이제 본격적으로 대입준비를 해요. IB나 A-Level 같은 걸 (우리로 치면 수능) 보아야 하는데 이건 과목 3 개만 고르면 땡이에요 (물론 더 많이 골라도 됨). 어떤 과에 지원하든 일단 영어는 넣으면 좋으니 영어 한 과목, 나머지 두 과목은 알아서 채워요. 이공계나 경상계에 가려면 당연히 수학을 넣는 게 좋지만 그럴 게 아니라면 그거 빼고 외국어, 역사, 철학, 문학, 예체능 계통 과목을 넣는 게 나아요. 제 경험이 한정적이긴 하지만, 옥스퍼드에서 동양학 신입생 선발할 적엔 수학 넣고 온 애는 좀 별종으로 봤어요 (그걸 어따 쓰게...'ㅅ'). 옥스브릿지나 그에 버금가는 대학들은 A-Level 세 과목 모두 A(우리로 치면 수능 1.5등급?)을 최소요건으로 규정해요. 그것보다 더 잘 받아온다고 면접 때 딱히 더 잘 봐주진 않으니까 정말로 최소요건인 셈이에요. 나머진 다 자소서, 작문, 추천서, 그리고 무엇보다도 면접으로 결정하지요. 추천서는 보통 큰 역할은 못하지만, 그래도 간혹 진짜 잘 쓴 추천서는 영향력을 발휘해요. 작문도 중요한데, 지원자의 지적 수준을 면접 전에 대략 알려주거든요. 물론 정직하지 못한 방법으로 작문 샘플을 제출할 수도 있는데, 제가 면접해본 지원자들은 작문을 통해 드러난 지적 수준이 면접을 통해 드러난 지적 수준과 대체로 일치했어요. 글 보고 느낌굳인 친구는 보통 면접에서도 느낌굳. 자소서는... 확실히 아주 잘 쓴 자소서는 티가 나지만 그런 경우는 드물어요. 자소서는 대체로 면접에서 어떤 이야기를 나누면 좋을지 지원자가 면접관에게 미리 건네는 질문지 같은 역할을 해요. 그래서 지원자들은 보통 자기가 읽은 책 중에 나새끼 이런 책을 읽다니 졸라 장하다 싶은 책 제목과 내용들을 자소서에 넣어요. 그러면 면접관들도 편하지요. '음, 니가 시몬 드 보봐르를 완독했다구? 한 번 지껄여보아라'. 진짜 읽고 이해해서 지줄대는 것 같으면 합ㅋ격ㅋ 옥스브릿지 면접이 이런식이면 고등학교 교육도 그에 맞춰서 가게 돼요. 좋은 고등학교는 이런 교육을 시켜줄 만한 튜터를 많이 고용해서 입시반 친구들의 독서지도를 시켜줘요. 오 너새끼 정치학과를 가고시프냐. 그러면 우리 플라톤부터 읽어볼까. 오호라 너는 영문과 지원이로구나. 디킨스는 다 읽었겠지? 중국학 하겠다고? 관우 아세요? 이런 과정을 거쳐 대학에 들어와서 받는 교육도 사실 고등학교 교육이랑 많이 다르지 않아요. 강의는 별로 없고... 2주에 한 번씩 튜토리얼이란 걸 해요. 2주동안 읽을 책을 튜터가 던져주고, 애들은 그 책들을 열심히 읽고 수천단어 분량의 에세이를 써와요. 그러면 튜터가 그 에세이를 읽고나서 애들을 1:1로 만나서 1시간여 동안 대화하는 거예요. 이런 걸 4년간 하면 대학 졸업 ㅇㅇ 재밌겠죠? 재밌어요. 선생과 학생이 서로 가르쳐주고 길러주는 (教育) 연습을 저렇게 오랫동안 하다보면 나중에 어떤 종류의 일을 하게 되든 일단 제대로 말하고 제대로 읽고 제대로 쓸 수 있게 돼요. 그래서, 일하는 분야와 무관하게, 고등교육을 잘 받은 영국인이랑 대화하다보면 입에서 문장이 나온다는 기분 좋은 인상을 받고, 그런 사람들이 쓴 책을 읽다보면 그런 사람들과 대화하는 기분이 들어요. 교육과 선발은 물론 늘 손을 잡고 같이 다니지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 교육은 교육이고 선발은 선발이에요. 그래서 저는 사람들이 교육 이야기를 하겠다며 실상 선발 이야기만 하고 있을 때 무척 아쉬워요. 교육은 솔랭이 아닌데 말이죠. -끗- * Cascade님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2019-11-03 21:41) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다.
