퇴근길이었다. 긴 광역버스를 타고 다시 2호선으로 갈아타는 여정에서 한 남자를 가운데에 둔 두 여자가 지나간다. 둘의 어깨가 스치는 만큼의 거리로 붙어 가는 셋을 보며 신기하다고 생각했다. 뒤쫓을 셈은 아니었지만 열차가 들어오지 않는 바람에 같은 승강장에 섰다. 남자의 얼굴은 무척 날렵한 턱선, 커다란 눈망울, 오뚝한 코로 또렷한 이목구비를 자랑했다. 아주, 잘 생긴 남자였다. 나는 그 무리가 새 둥지 같다고 생각했다. 두 여성의 눈빛은 그의 말 한마디를 기다리는 내내 초롱초롱 빛이 났다. 잘생김이란 그런 것이었다. 남이 가진 떡이 더 커 보인다고 했던가. 나는 그럴 때면 내가 가진 마흔여덟 아홉 가지의 장점만큼이나 저런 얼굴이 부러웠다. 아마 많은 사람들이 설리를 보면서도 비슷한 느낌을 받았을 것이다. 그래서 그 사람의 죽음 역시 쉬이 궁금증과 냉소를 섞어 소비할 수 있을지도 모르겠다. 뭐가 아쉬워서?라고 되묻는 사람들의 궁금증 이면에는 자기에게 설리의 무엇인가가 있었다면 오래도록 행복할 거란 막연하고도 무의식적인 기대가 있었을지도 모른다. 내 기억에 설리는 늘 논란의 중심에 있었다. 나는 그녀가 속해있던 걸그룹의 노래도 잘 모르고, 그녀의 존재에 대해서도 잘 모른다. 다만 그녀가 어떤 식으로 소비되었는지는 진절머리 나게 알고 있다. 그녀의 가슴은 늘 속옷을 입었는지 안 입었는지, 젖꼭지가 드러났는지 안 드러났는지, 그리고 어떤 연예인의 손아귀로 쥐어졌는지 따위의 방식으로만 언급되곤 했다. 비단 가슴뿐이었을까. 그녀의 남자 친구의 이름에 담긴 섹슈얼한 의미는 곧 그녀를 같은 도마 위에 올려놓게 했다. 그런 화제가 사람들에게 자극적이고, 흥미롭다는 것을 부정하지는 않겠다. 본능적 욕망과 밀접한 경계를 팔아서 부를 쌓는 직업의 일종이 가져야 하는 부담이라는 것도 역시 완전히 부정하지는 않겠다. 그러나 그것이 정당한 방식의 소비였다고 말하는 사람들의 뚫린 입을 시멘트로 막아버리고 싶다는 것 역시도 부정하지는 않겠다. 비단 남성들만 그녀를 그렇게 대한 것은 아니었다. 그녀의 SNS에는 늘 수많은 악플이 있었다고 한다. 그중에는 같은 여성이 그녀를 혐오할 수 있는 모든 언어를 동원해 상처 입힌 것도 많을 것이다. 한쪽에는 그녀를 마치 전리품이자 노리개로 이야기하기 원하는 사람들이, 한쪽에는 그녀를 누군가의 몸종이나 더럽고 천한 것으로 이야기하기를 원하는 사람들이 너무 많았다. 그 사이에 인간적인 선의를 가진 사람들을 모두 가려버릴 만큼. 그러한 잘못을 남자나, 여자나, 혹은 사회의 탓으로 쉽게 환원하는 것은 간편한 일일 것이다. 그것은 환원을 통해 나의 작은 잘못을 없는 것으로 만들고 다른 집단의 잘못은 비대하게 만든다. 그러나 진정으로 그녀의 죽음 앞에 결백한 이들은 한 인간의 죽음에 대한, 누구나 겪는 이 보편적인 비극에 대해 아무 의미 없을 수도 있는 명복을 조용히 빌 것이다. 그것이 사자에게 할 수 있는 최선의 방식이기 때문이다. 그렇지 못한 이들은, 이 죽음이 내 손 끝에서 일어난 것이 아니라고 말하기 위해 최선을 다할 것이다. 그래서 나는 누군가의 잘못을 얘기하지 않고, 그저 나 역시 설리가 오래 전의 인터뷰에서, 잠이 들면 일어나고 싶지 않다는 그 말을 똑같이 해 본 사람으로서 죽음과 삶에 대해서 말해보고 싶다. 나는 지금 죽음을 상상하지 않는다. 그러나 내가 죽음의 문턱을 넘는 것이 어떤 사는 일 보다도 편안할 거라고 마음 깊이 믿었던, 그리고 오랫동안 살아서 누릴 수 있는 오욕칠정의 어떤 것보다도 평안한 죽음이 매력적으로 보였던 그 시간 이후에 죽음이라는 관념을 대하는 것이 조금 바뀌었다는 것을 느낀다. 그때는 '살기 싫다'도 아니었고, '죽고 싶다'도 아니었다. 그렇게 강렬한 감정이 아니었다. 나는 다만, 편안해지고 싶었고 이유 없이 눈물이 났다. 많은 억울함과 서러움과 분노와 회한과, 비명으로 삭아버린 마음으로는 더 이상 살고 죽는 일에 대해 경중을 따질 만큼 활기찰 수가 없었기 때문이다. 삶의 여정 속에서 그러한 순간은 언제고 나를 다시 찾아올지도 모른다. 약간은 두렵기도 하다. 죽음을 바라게 되던 밤이 한 가지 이유만으로 다가오지 않았던 것처럼, 나아지는 일 역시 한 가지 이유만으로 해결되지는 않을지도 모른다는 생각이 들기 때문이다. 그때 내 주변의 사람들 중 누군가는 그러한 고통을 진지하게 받아들이지 않았고, 누군가는 냉소했고, 누군가는 안타까워했고, 누군가는 귀찮아했다. 그러나 동시에 나름의 방식으로 나를 북돋아주고 싶어 하기도 했다. 놀랍게도, 나는 사람들이 힘껏 건넨 사랑의 말들은 담아둘 둑이 없었고, 나를 불안하고 약하게 만들 수 있는 것들만 주워 담기에 바빴다. 사람들의 애정과 선의가 거짓이 아님을 알면서도 그것은 무엇인가에 가로막혀 닿지 않는 것처럼 느껴졌다. 그것은 무척 절망적인 일이었다. 나는 죽음을 바라는 일에 저항할수록 더욱 끈적이는 늪에 빠지는 것처럼 느껴졌다. 우울과 불안에서 벗어나기 위해 세워진 많은 말들은 겉을 맴돌다 스러져갔다. 아이러니하게도 내가 죽음을 고르지 않은 것은 게을렀기 때문이다. 나는 죽음을 선택할 만큼의 기력도 없었다. 그것이 다행이었다. 대신에 나는 내가 할 수 있는 아주 작은 일에 충실하기로 했다. 운 좋게도 취업이 되어버린 탓과, 내가 나의 우울보다 조금 더 강한 책임감을 타고난 덕택에 매일 성실히 일할 수 있었다. 생각을 포기하기 위해 일을 했다. 야근이나 새벽 출근은 몸이 조금 고될 뿐 생각을 할 겨를이 없다는 것이 무엇보다 만족스러웠다. 그렇게 몇 달 동안 서서히, 나는 생각하지 않는 것으로 깊은 늪을 조금씩 빠져나왔다. 그 날 그 날 일을 했다는 사실은 나의 우울감보다 명확한 기록으로 남아있었고, 나는 나의 상품가치에 기대어 일어나는 것이 싫지 않게 되었다. 이것을 단순히 자기 효능감의 증진이나, 일상의 복귀를 통해 삶의 동력을 얻었다고 이야기하는 것은 오해가 생길 것 같다. 사실 나도 왜 괜찮아졌는지 몇 가지 이유를 추론해 볼 수 있을 뿐이다. 혹은 그 이유 전부가 괜찮아질 수 있는 이유일지도 모른다. 그러나 동시에, 그 모든 이유에도 불구하고 다시 돌아오지 못했을지도 모를 일이다. 확신하건대, 그 시점에 내가 돌아올 수 없었다면 나는 다시는 깨어나지 않았을 것이다. 내가 쌓아온 그 어떤 것들도 닿지 않는 곳에서, 나는 가능한 모든 것을 포기했을 것이다. 나는 설리가 어떤 이유로 죽었는지 알 수 없다. 그녀에게 어떤 깊이의 우울이 존재했는지도 알 수 없다. 열의 사람에게 열의 사랑이 있듯이, 열의 사람에겐 열의 우울이 있다. 그건 무척 자연스러운 일이다. 사랑이 모두에게 특별하지만 동시에 보편타당한 것을 지니고 있듯이, 우울 역시 비슷한 형태를 가지고 있다는 막연한 생각이 든다. 그래서 그녀가 죽음으로 내몰리기까지 우울에 덧칠한 보편타당한 사람들의 행태에 대해서는 달갑지 않다. 보통의 사람이 시간과 노동력과 가능한 약간의 인격을 포함하여 하루를 팔며 살아갈 때, 그녀 역시 그저 노동자였다고 생각해도 좋다는 생각을 한다. 그녀는 다만 좀 더 내밀한 것들을 팔아야 했고, 때로는 원치 않았을 것이다. 그것이 부의 대가라고 말하는 것은 불합리한 일이다. 우리는 서로의 가격을 매기며 살아가지만, 그것이 곧 서로를 상품으로 칭하는 것은 아니라는 것을 잊지 말아야 한다. 어떤 상품도 최종 가격으로 지불한 화폐의 가치로 상품의 당위와 존재 모두를 지불할 수는 없다. 심지어 그것이 유형의 물질이 아니라 무형의 인간성이라면 더더욱. 그럼에도 불구하고 사람들은 너무 빨리 이것을 잊고, 너무 가까이서 할퀴었던 것은 아닐까. 비교할 수 없는 크기의 것이지만, 나 역시 훨씬 적은 사람들에게 그러한 인정이나 애정을 받아본 행운이 있었다. 그것은 정말 짜릿한 일이었다. 그러나 동시에 도무지 해소할 수 없는 갈증이기도 했다. 그 즐거움은 너무나 황홀한 것이었고, 칭찬과 관심이 몸을 달뜨게 하여 어쩔 줄을 몰랐다. 그리고 그 관심이 썰물처럼 빠져나갈 때면 나는 견디기 어려운 허무함을 느꼈다. 그게 싫어서 더욱 내 안에서 잘 소화시키고 받아들여야 했던 무수한 감정과 일들을 팔아넘기기 바빴다. 그 조촐한 관심만이 가장 중요했기 때문이다. 그때, 수백의 칭찬 사이에 있던 서넛의 비난을 기억한다. 웃기지 않은가?
