[험난한 하와이 정착 과정] 초기 이민자의 최종 입국자 86명은 협궤 열차에 탑승하여 오하우(Oahu) 섬 와이알루아(Waialua) 농장 모쿨레이아(Mokuleia)로 이동한 후 본격적인 이민 생활을 시작합니다. 사탕수수 농장에서 초기 이민자들은 하루 10시간 이상 중노동을 하며 삶을 개척해 나갔습니다. 한인들에게는 숙소가 제공되었으나, 대부분 4~5개의 방이 딸린 목재집에서 방당 4~5명이 함께 거주하는 열악한 생활이었습니다.  하와이제도 오하우섬 1905년 하와이에는 약 65개 농장에 5,000여명 한인 노동자들이 혼합 농장에서 다른 민족들과 더불어 생활했습니다. 새벽 4시 30분 기상하여 세면과 식사, 아침 식사를 하고 6시부터 오후 4시 30분까지 일했습니다. 점심시간은 1시간 정도였으며 일요일은 쉬었습니다. 한인들은 사탕수수 농장에서 가죽채찍을 든 십장인 '루나'의 감시를 받으며 뜨거운 햇볕 아래서 힘든 노동도 견뎌야 했습니다. 초기 한인 이민자 중 농부출신은 1/7 정도였고 대부분 도시의 근로자들이었으니 한인들의 현지 적응은 쉽지 않았습니다. 인종차별도 심했는데 이민자 중 일부의 양반출신들은 적응을 더욱 힘들어 했습니다.  한인 노동자들이 잠시 휴식을 취하는 모습 급여는 월급 단위로 받았고, 목걸이처럼 걸고 다니던 방고(일본어로 번호)라고 불리던 번호표 겸 신분증에 따라 차등 지급되었습니다. 1905년까지 성인 남자의 일급은 67센트, 여자와 소년들은 하루 50센트를 받았습니다. 매월 일요일을 뺀 25일 정도를 일했으니 성인 남자라면 월급이 16~18달러 정도였습니다.  가죽채찍과 방고 급여 자체는 한국보다 많았지만 더 열심히 일했는지 게을렀는지 등 일한 정도에 따라 받는 금액이 달랐으며 식비를 제외하고 남은 돈으로 저축하기는 무척 어려웠다고 합니다. 굳이 앞부분에서 언급하지는 않았지만 이민자 개개인은 은행으로부터 하와이까지의 선박 운임 70달러와 지참금 100달러를 합한 170달러를 대출받았고, 농장에서 일한 급여로 상환받았던 것도 빼놓을 수 없습니다. 이 같은 계약이민은 미국 실정법상 위법이었지만 알렌은 불법이민을 강행했던 것이죠. 1910년이 되면 한인 7,400여 명은 약 2,000여 명이 미국 본토로 이주하였고, 약 1,000여 명은 조국으로 되돌아갑니다. 한인 귀환율은 대략 20% 수준이었는데, 중국인의 50%와 일본인의 54%와 비교해보면 훨씬 적은 비율이었습니다. 남은 인원 대다수는 일본의 조국 강점 등으로 부득이 정착을 택한 것으로 보입니다. 더 많은 돈벌이를 위해 도시로 진출하거나 미국 본토로 이주하는 사람들이 증가하였습니다. 미국 본토 이주자들은 1920년대에 캘리포니아를 중심으로 채소상과 식당업 등을 하며 정착해가기 시작했습니다. 특히 1920년대부터는 숙련 노동자와 사무직 종사자가 증가하면서 직업의 종류가 다양해졌고, 미국 사회 각 방면에 자리잡게 됩니다. 7. [사진신부와 사진혼인] 한인 이민자들의 슬픈 에피소드 중 하나는 결혼이었습니다. 초기 이민자들은 남녀 성비는 비록 일본이나 중국의 노동자들에 비해서는 균등했다고는 하나, 남성이 압도적으로 많아 배우자를 구하기 어려운 문제가 있었습니다. 혼기를 훌쩍 넘긴 노총각들은 결혼을 원했고, 혼례를 위한 궁여지책이 사진결혼이었습니다. 중매쟁이를 통해 남자와 여자 모두 사진만 보고 결혼을 결심하는 것이었습니다. 이러한 결혼은 미주에 이민한 다른 동양인들부터 시작한 혼인법이었습니다. 미주에는 동양여자가 없고 백인 여자들은 동양인 남자와 결혼하고 싶지 않았고 이는 동양인 남자들 역시 마찬가지였으므로 사회에서 후원하고 정부당국도 동의하여 사진혼인이 시작된 것입니다.  이역만리 하와이에서 결혼을 하고자 하면 이처럼 사진 결혼을 하는 수밖에 없었다. 이렇게 1910년부터 1924년까지 약 700여 명 정도의 사진신부들이 하와이로 건너갔다고 합니다. 오늘날 여권 사진처럼 6개월 이내의 사진을 찍는 것이 아니었기 때문에 남자의 경우는 10~20년 전 사진이 흔했는데요. 사진만 보고 결혼하다 보니 신랑 신부의 나이 차이는 20살 이상도 흔했고, 평균 15살이나 차이가 났다고 합니다. 이는 이혼률이 높아지고 과부가 많아지는 등 한인 사회에서 문제를 야기하기도 하였지만, 그래도 40년이 지난 후 자손은 무려 7천명에 달했다고 합니다. 8. [한인 공동체와 교회의 역할] 하와이는 한인들에게는 극심한 고통들만이 펼쳐진 세계였음에 틀림없었습니다. 낯선 땅 하와이에서 벌어지는 모든 상황은 모두가 처음 겪는 일이었고 이를 극복해나가는 것은 고난의 행군에 다름 아니었습니다. 그렇지만 하와이는 희망의 땅이기도 했습니다. 이민자들이 떠나오기 직전 경험한 한국은 아무리 몸부림쳐도 극복할 수 없는 곳이었습니다. 반면 하와이는 아무튼 일하면 살 수 있었고 가난도 극복할 수 있는 곳이었습니다.  아무리 힘들어도 한인들에게 하와이는 약속의 땅이었다. 이 과정에서 한인 자치단체가 조직되어 한인이민사회를 계몽해 나갔습니다. 한인들은 고된 노동을 하며 어려운 생활을 꾸려나가면서도 교육에 힘을 쏟았습니다. 조국을 떠날 당시 65%가 문맹이었던 이들은 야간학교에서 입학 영어를 습득, 미국에서 굉장한 적응력을 보여주었습니다. 자강 운동을 겸하여 자녀 교육에도 각별한 관심을 가지면서 200달러를 모금하여 기숙사학교(Boarding School)을 설립하였고, 농장 측과 하와이 준주정청에서 금액을 지원하여 1905년에는 한인학교도 개설되었습니다. 저축 습관도 함께 길러졌습니다. 수년 후에는 5~6백 불에서 수천 불까지 모으는 사람도 생겼을 정도라고 하니까요. 한인들의 정착의 과정을 설명할 때 교회의 역할 역시 도저히 빼놓을 수 없습니다. 교회는 한인 공동체의 구심점이자 초기 이민자들의 안식처였습니다. 1903년 첫 이민자들이 사탕수수 농장에 도착하면서부터 교회 공동체 활동이 시작됩니다. 당연하게도 인천 거주 교인들이 많았던 때문입니다. 첫 예배는 1903년 3월경부터였다는데, 호놀룰루에서 정기적인 예배가 시작되었고, 1905년 해외 최초의 한인 교회가 와드만(J. W. Wadman) 목사에 의해 에바 농장에 세워졌습니다. 전체 한인 중 50%가 기독교로 개종했을 정도로 한인들은 급속도로 개종했습니다. 훗날 1918년 이승만이 한인기독교회를 설립하자 감리교회와 한인기독교회는 하와이의 양대 종교 조직으로 발전합니다.  1905년 하와이(및 해외)에 처음 건립된 감리교 한인 교회 교회는 한인들에게 직간접적으로 동기부여를 해주었습니다. 가난에 찌든 한인들에게 미국은 기회의 땅이었고 한인들은 자신들이 미국인 선교사들처럼 부자가 될 수 있을 것으로 믿었습니다. 9. [한인 이민자들의 독립운동] 하와이를 포함한 미주지역의 한인들은 채 1만 명이 되지 않았습니다. 만주 연해주의 200만 명 이주자 등에 비하면 그 수가 보잘 것 없었지만 역할만큼은 대단히 컸습니다. 초기 이민자와 그들의 후손들이 독립운동을 적극 지원했기 때문입니다. 한인 단체는 이민 후 즉시 생겨났는데, 단체 발전의 촉진제는 조국의 광복이었습니다. 한인들은 독립운동 기금조로 매년 1인당 3~5달러의 ‘인구세’ 납부를 의무화하고 있었습니다. 하와이 한인 대부분은 농장 노동자였기 때문에 일용직으로서 거의 최저 임금만을 받고 생활했음에도, 애국심이 발동되어 조국 광복을 고대하며 독립의연금을 납부했던 것입니다. 하와이 이민 사이에서는 이렇게 모집된 돈을 ‘애국금’으로 불렀다고 합니다. 1919년 상해 임시정부수립과 동시에 1919년 9월 3일 대한인국민회 중앙총회장 대리 백일규는 ‘애국금’ 30만 달러를 임시정부에 전달하겠다고 약속했을 정도입니다.  대한인국민회 제2인자였던 약산 백일규 선생 애국 운동도 전개되었습니다. 1910년 일제에 강점된 이후 성공에는 이르지 못했지만 안창호와 박용만, 이승만 등이 하와이와 미주에서 독립운동을 이끌어 갔습니다. 안창호는 1913년 흥사단(興士團)을 창설하여 인재 양성을 통한 독립 성취의 이념을 수립했습니다. 그러나 1932년 윤봉길 의거로 일본 관헌에 의해 체포되어 국내로 압송, 대전형무소에 수감되었고, 보석 석방 후 수양동우회 사건으로 재차 체포되어 옥고 끝에 1938년 순국하였습니다. 박용만은 군사력을 배양해서 대일전쟁을 전개하여 독립을 쟁취해야 한다는 이념을 갖고 있었습니다. 본래 하와이에서는 외국인이 군인양성을 할 수 없었지만 하와이 군사령부의 승낙을 받아 1914년 ‘국민군단’을 창설해내었습니다. 그러나 1928년 10월 17일 중국 북경에서 의열단원의 총격을 받고 암살되어 정치적 방책은 무산되고 말았습니다.  우성 박용만 선생. 이승만과 독립운동 방략에 있어 견해차이가 컸다. 이승만은 열강과 외교교섭을 통해 자주독립을 달성해야 한다는 이념을 갖고, 1919년에 구미위원부를 조직하였습니다. 1921년 상해 임시정부의 대통령으로 추대되었지만, 임시정부의 외교노선을 무시하고 구미위원부를 통해 독자적인 서구 열강에 대한 외교 및 선전활동을 진행하다가 임시정부와의 마찰을 일으켜 탄핵이 되었고 구미위원부도 해체되었습니다. 10.
