이 글을 처음에 쓰려고 마음 먹었을 때, 내가 뭐라고 노숙자의 삶과 빈곤에 대해 얘기 하나 싶었다. 그런데 생각해보니까, 계급의 갈등과 빈곤의 공포에 짓눌린 인간 군상극의 영화가 빈곤과는 가장 거리가 먼 문화인들의 도락으로 소비되고, 박수갈채를 받고, 세계의 대단한 이들에게 따봉도 받았다는데 나라고 한 마디 못할쏘냐! 그래서 그냥 쓴다. 저녁 운동을 나서는 길이었다. 매일 만보를 넘기기로 마음 먹었지만 주말에는 바깥 활동이 없다보니 따로 시간을 내서 움직여야 한다. 아침에 5천보쯤 걸었으니 저녁에는 만보쯤 채우면 뿌듯함을 느낄 수 있으리라. 한여름이 오기 전의 밤공기는 서늘했고, 푸른 나뭇잎들이 바람을 타고 서로를 슥삭거리며 문댄다. 도시 한 가운데서 숲을 느낄 수 있다는 생각에 기분이 한 결 좋았다. 그 풍경들 사이로, 아주 어색한 이방인이 앉아 있었다. 하마터면 밤의 어두운 색깔과 동화되어 알아볼 수도 없었을지도 모르는 자리에 사람이 있었다. 날씨에 어울리지 않는 까만색 점퍼와, 어릴 적 엄마가 자주 사오던 골덴바지. 발가락에 맞춰 구멍이 뚫린 뉴발란스 운동화. 적당한 산발의 긴 머리. 땟국물이 흐른다는 색 표현가지고는 모자랄, 고동색과 썩은 나무 사이 어딘가의 낯빛을 지닌 노숙자였다. 으레 책 따위에서는 노숙자를 보고 눈은 하얗다고 말한다. 뭘 모르는 소리다. 뚝섬의 편의점에서 일할 때, 몇 명의 노숙자가 가게에 컵라면이나 장수막걸리 따위를 사러 온 적이 있다. 짙은 그늘이 진 피부 사이에 파뭍힌 눈은 대체로 누렇게 떠있다. 누런 흰자와 눈동자 사이로 실핏줄이 선 눈들. 물건을 가져와서는 죽일듯이 노려보다가도, 눈이 마주치면 얼른 고개를 돌리거나 눈을 피한다. 주머니에서 어떻게 이렇게 알차게 구겨놨을까 싶을만큼 꼬깃해진 천원짜리와, 백원, 오십원, 십원이 뒤섞인 것을 세상에서 제일 소중한 보물처럼 매대 위에 늘어놓는다. 마치 어린 신생아를 조심스레 안아온 듯이 두 손을 모아 내미는 사람도 있었다. 돈을 받을 때에는 이 세상 냄새가 아닌 것 같은 찌든 악취가 코를 찌른다. 그 중에 인상깊었던 노숙자는, 왕뚜껑을 먹던 사람이다. 왕뚜껑 한 개를 사서는, 물을 붓고, 다 익기도 전에 젓가락질을 시작한다. 얼마나 배고팠으면.. 하는 생각이 들었지만 몸에서 나는 악취가 라면냄새와 섞여 가게를 가득 채웠다. 문을 열어놓고도 숨 쉬는게 짜증이 났다. 이성적인 판단 너머의, 본능적이고 깊숙한 혐오감이 들었다. 빨리 먹고 좀 꺼져라.. 그가 발을 디딘 곳들은 까만 땟국물이 신발에서 흘렀고, 이 냄새를 도대체 어떻게 해야할 지 감도 오지 않았다. 그러나 그 노숙자는 면을 다 먹고 국물을 적당히 마시더니, 또 뜨거운 물을 붓는 것이다. 나는 컵라면을 그런식으로 먹는 사람을 처음 봤다. 국물을 조금 마시고, 물을 또 붓는다. 조금 후루룩 마시더니, 또 물을 붓는다. 아마도 컵라면의 맛은 점점 희미해질것이다. 스프는 하난데, 물은 벌써 몇 개의 컵라면을 말고도 남을 만큼의 양이 들어갔을 것이다. 막연히 지금 쯤이면 맹물이나 다름없겠다 싶을 정도까지 물을 여러번 부어먹고 나서야, 가게 바깥으로 그마저 남은 컵라면 그릇을 들고 나가는 것이다. 아까의 소중했던 천원짜리처럼 신주단지 모시듯 가슴에 품고. 그러나 우리 동네에서, 나는 노숙자에 대한 기억이 없다. 이 동네는, 노숙자가 없기 때문이다. 무슨 황당한 소리냐고 하겠지만 진짜 그렇다. 나는 이 동네에서 술에 취해 널브러진 사람은 봤어도 노숙자를 본 적이 없다. 적어도 내가 기억하는 동안에는 그렇다. 어떻게 그럴 수 있냐 싶지만, 실제로 그렇다. 이 동네에서 빈곤의 냄새란 지극히 희미하다. 그래서, 저 노숙자의 자리가 무척이나 의아한 것이다. 나는 서울 여기저기를 다니면서, 노숙자가 없는 곳을 별로 본 적이 없다. 그들은 도시의 풍경이기도 하고, 자본주의의 예외이기도하며, 계급 바깥의 무언가이다. 거창하게 맑스를 이야기하며 노숙자같은 계층도 해석하자면 프롤레타리아계급이다 따위의 이야기를 하는 사람도 있겠지만, 내 생각에 내가 읽었던 자본의 느낌은 애새끼도 일해야하는 유럽사회에서 노숙자의 사회적 정체성을 크게 고민했다는 느낌을 받지는 않았었다. 여하튼, 그들은 도시에 자라는 당연한 삶이면서도, 어떤 동네에서는 투명인간과 같다. 강서구의 어느 골목에도, 종로의 번화가 사이에도, 강북의 시장 뒷편에도, 한 서울 명문대 대학가의 담벼락 근처에도, 밤이면 사람들이 사라진다는 신촌의 모텔촌 어드메에서도 나는 노숙자를 보았지만 그 기억들을 통째로 뒤져도 우리 동네의 노숙자는 없었던 것이다. 노숙자를 뒤로하고 걷는 길 위에서, 나는 계속 빈부격차와 빈곤을 떠올렸다. 그리고 최근 개봉한 기생충이란 영화에 대해 쏟아진 찬사와 비판과 평가들을 떠올렸다. 나는 그 영화를 보지 않았지만, 그들이 말하는 것 사이에서 아주 특이한 무언가를 느꼈다. 그게 뭘까, 그게 뭐였을까. 영화를 보지 않은 내가 알 수는 없는 일일지도 모르겠다. 산책로의 옆으로 높게 선 골프백화점 앞을 지나는데, 한 외제차에서 내 또래의 젊은 남자가 내렸다. 그는 담배를 꺼내며 마지막 연초를 입에 물고는 빈 곽을 툭, 바닥에 떨어뜨렸다. 그리고 그것을 아주 편안하고 자연스럽게 발로 틱, 하고 차서 옆 차 밑으로 밀어넣어 버리는 것이었다. 담배곽은 소리도 내지 않고, 쏙 그림자 속으로 사라졌다. 문득, 아까 그 자리에 있던 노숙자가 떠올랐다. 그리고, 기생충이란 영화를 두고 이야기 하는 사람들이 떠올랐다. 왜 이게 같이 떠오르지? 하는 사이에, 길 건너편에서 펑, 하고 화약이 터지는 소리가났다. 북한의 남침인가? 하고 멍청한 생각을 잠깐 했지만 곧 여름이니까 아마도 불꽃놀이겠지 싶었다. 역시나, 저 먼 하늘에 빛이 번쩍거리고 이내 건물들 사이로 불꽃이 튄다. 그 순간, 노숙자와, 골프백화점과, 기생충과, 담배곽이 전부 튀어나오는 것이었다. 나는 문득 그 자리에 서서 주변을 둘러보았다. 여전히 이 넓은 거리에 노숙자는 한 명도 없었고 다만 고기집에서 배를 두들기며 나오는 일행이나, 외제차 근처에 모인 젊은이들이나, 유명한 브랜드의 고급 호텔로 들어가는 사람들이나, 산책을 나온 커플들 따위만이 가득했다. 명징해 지는 것이 있었다. 빈곤은 과연 누구의 것인가. 기생충이라는 영화를 비판하던 한 페이스북 유저가 떠올랐다. 빈곤을 전시해가며 예술을 즐기고 박수를 치는 사람들이 빈곤과 얼마나 멀리 있는가에 대한 이야기였다. 그 밑에는 그것에 대한 많은 반박이 달렸다. 썩은 고동나무 색 근처에도 가지 않았을 사람들이, 흰 눈을 반짝이며 갑론을박을 펼치며 각자의 지성을 뽐내었다. 누군가는 그것을 예술이라 하였고, 누군가는 그것이 하나의 시도라고 하였다. 누군가는 그것을 본 사람들에 대한 이야기를 했고, 누군가는 그것을 보고 나온 사람들이 마주하는 영화관 바깥의 세상에 대해 얘기했다. 그리고 누군가는, 영화를 영화로 볼 수 있는 사람들에 대해 얘기했다. 그 모든 것이, 빈곤과는 아무 상관도 없는 일이었다. 집으로 들어가는 길에, 그 노숙자가 있던 자리를 가 보았다. 여전히, 같은 자세로 그 자리에 앉아있었다. 아까는 보이지 않던 장수막걸리 한 병이 텅 빈 채로 세워져 있었다. 근처 편의점에 가서 한도가 10만원쯤 남은 100만원짜리 카드로 장수막걸리 한병과, 왕뚜껑 한 개와, 생수 한 병을 샀다. 3천원돈이 삐빅하고 간단히 결제되었다. 소중함과는 무척 거리가 먼 모습이었다. 컵라면에 물을 붓고, 조심조심 걸음을 옮겼다. 증기에 뎁혀진 손가락이 뜨겁다는 느낌이 들었다. "이거 드세요" 나는 그 노숙자의 옆에 술과, 라면과, 물을 내려놓았다. 그는 잘 떠지지도 않는 눈으로, 가게에서 가끔 볼 수 있었던 적대감을 가득 담아 날 쳐다봤다. 그러거나 말거나, 그 근처에 가자마자 진동하는 악취에 나는 괜한짓을 했다는 생각이 들었다. 숨을 멈추고 재빨리 몸을 일으켜 그 자리를 벗어났다. 수십 걸음을 걸어서 그 노숙자가 한참 멀어진 다음에야, 고개를 돌렸다. 노숙자는, 미동도 하지 않은 채 나를 바라보고 있는 듯 했다. 그 눈빛이 어떤 것이었을지는 시력나쁜 내가 알아보기엔 어려웠다. 집으로 돌아오는 길에, 나는 이 동네에 주저앉은 저 노숙자가 우리의 이방인이라는 생각이 들었다. 이 동네에는 빈곤과 너무 먼 사람들밖에 없다. 이들에게 빈곤한 이들이란 아까 그 외제차에서 내리던 이의 발길질로 밀어낸 것일지도 모른다. 그래서 이 동네는 늘 조용하고, 살기 좋고, 안전하다고 한다. 우리집은 그저 먼 옛날에 운좋게 여기에 들어와 운좋게 튕겨져 나가지 않았기에 대충 누리며 사는 셈이다. 그래서 여기에는 저 먼 한강의 불꽃놀이를 구경할 공터는 있지만, 저런 이들이 몸을 뉘일 공원은 없다. 대체 누가 관리하는지 몰라도, 사람이 여럿 자도 모를 으슥한 공원조차 너무나 깨끗하게, 더럽고 위험한 것들이 없게 유지되는 탓이다. 그러나 나는 안다. 불과 몇 개월 전까지만 해도 나는 수시로 빈곤의 곁으로 떨어져야 했으며, 언제라도 저 자리가 남의 것이 아님을. 노숙자가 보기에 코웃음을 칠 가난이라 할 지라도, 내가 다만 두 손 두 발로 기어 나올 수 있는 나이가 아니었다면 언제든 빈곤의 이웃이 되었을 수도 있다는 것을. 운 좋게 부모님이 노력해서, 운 좋게 대한민국이어서, 운 좋게 내가 선택한 것이 돈을 벌 수 있는 일이었을 뿐이다. 나는 다만, 빈곤이 슬쩍 비껴간 운 좋은 사람인것을. 내 벌이의 몇 천원 정도를 그의 빈곤에 양보하며, 문득 그런 생각이 들었다. 내 벌이도 누군가가 똑같이 그렇게 양보해 준, 적선일지도 모르겠다는 생각. 조금, 속이 울렁거렸다. 일하지 않는 자는 먹지도 말라, 자본가여 먹지도 말라 라는 노래가 문득 떠올랐다. 배울만큼 배운 사람조차 일하지 못하는 시대에서, 나는 늘 살아남을 수 있다는 것을 기뻐하고 있었다. 그 기뻐함 어디에도, 빈곤은 소리소문없이 지워져 있었다. 여전히, 이상했다. 부가 너무나 당연한 만큼이나, 빈곤도 너무나 당연하게 있다는 것이. 그리고 그러한 계급의 구도에서 늘, 빈곤은 무엇보다 강렬한 악취와 절망으로 남겨져 공포를 느끼게 한다는 것도. 다만 빈곤과 한 발짝 멀어져 있다는 것으로 안도하며, 이방인을 이방인으로 대할 수 있다는 안도감에 3천원의 팁을 던진 셈이다. 내일도, 모레도 그 자리에 그 노숙자가 있을지 모르겠다. 아마도 산책로를 관리하는 사람이나, 혹은 경찰이나, 근처 공원이나 아파트를 관리하는 사람들에게 쫒겨날 것이다. 이 동네의 조용하고, 풍요롭고, 안전한 것들은 당연한 것들을 툭, 툭 밀어내면서 얻은 것들일 테니까. 나는 그저, 내가 부디 이 거리에서 툭, 하고 밀려나지 않기를 빌었다. 짙은 가난의 그림자가 비껴가기를 빌었다. 계급이 어째야 하느니, 빈부격차가 어째야 하느니에는 한 마디도 내밀지 못하고 그저 몇 천원의 혹은 몇 만원의 동정쯤이야 얼마든지 내놓을 수 있으니 제발 빈곤이 늘 이방인의 것으로 남기를 빌었다. 행여나 내게 어느날 빈곤이 쏟아진다면 그 때에는 이 사회의 외곽이 아닌, 가장 부유하고 밝은 곳의 오점이 되어 죽으면 좋을 것이다. 문명을, 부를, 이 여유와 아름다움이 늘 일상일 수 있는, 빈곤하지 않은 사람들끼리 빈곤을 전시하고 낙오한 이들을 구경거리로 삼아도 미학을 따질 수 있는 이들의 발걸음 사이에, 긁어내고 지워도 사라지지 않을 새까만 얼룩으로 남아도 괜찮겠단 생각이 드는 것이다. 인간 다 존엄한 거라며, 다 평등한 거라며? 악에 받친 소리들이 떠오르고, 거리에 수백일을 버티던 사람들도 떠올랐다. 죽어야만 살겠다던 사람들의 절규가 떠올랐고, 돈은 있는데 마음에 아무것도 없어 훌쩍 떠나간 사람들도 떠올랐다. 마음 어디에 빈곤이 드리운 사람들은 그렇게 슬프게 스러져갔다. 그럴 바에야, 사람들의 마음에 껄끄럽고 짜증나는 걸로라도 남았으면 좋겠다는 생각이 드는 것이다. 그래서, 아주 먼 훗날에라도. 누구에게든 빈곤의 악취가 엉겨붙을 수 있다는 걸, 그래서 모두가 그 악취와 그늘을 벗겨내지 않고서는 영원히 우리의 이웃일 수 밖에 없음을 납득했으면 싶었다. 그러니 혐오스러워서 싫고, 역겨워서 싫으니, 차라리 빈곤을 없애자고. 그럼 도시 구석에 숨을 자리를 찾을 사람이 없는 곳에서 너나 나나 빈곤을 이방인의 것으로 세워두고 신나게 떠들 수 있을것이다. * Cascade님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2019-06-17 12:21) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다.
