막 대학교를 졸업한 사회 초년병들이 가장 하기 싫어하는 직종이 하나 있습니다. 네 바로 '영업직'이죠. '영업직'이라고 하면 왠지 전문성이라고는 눈꼽만큼도 없어 보이는 능글맞은 아저씨가 술접대를 하는 모습이 떠오르기도 합니다. 혹은 새파랗게 젊은 나에게 암보험, 종신 보험을 매우 친절하게(?) 권해주시는 어머니 친구분이 생각나기도 하네요. 마지못해 자리에 나온 사람에게 별 필요도 없어 보이는 무언가를 강권하는 일, 혹은 현란한 말솜씨로 남들의 뒤통수를 치고 혼자 이득을 챙기는 일. 일상생활을 통해서 이런 이미지가 굳어버린 상황에서 '영업직'이란 자연스럽게 신입사원들의 기피대상 1호가 되기 쉽습니다. 그런 영업을 한 19년 정도 하고 있습니다. 돌아보면 성격과 잘 맞는 일은 아닌데 '하다 보니' 계속 하고 있습니다. 제가 하고 있는 일은 '기업영업' 혹은 B2B 영업이라고 하는 분야인데 개인이 아닌 기업을 대상으로 하는 일입니다. 제 경우에는 주로 하이엔드 컴퓨터나 기업용 S/W 등을 판매해 왔지요. 영업직의 단점, 비애에 대해서는 정보가 차고 넘치니 오늘은 장점에 대해서도 한 번 이야기 해 보려합니다. 가장 큰 장점은 우선 시장에서 수요가 많다는 것이겠지요. 세간의 시선이야 어떻던지 간에 기업에서 영업은 엄연히 목소리가 크고 중요한 직종 중 하나입니다. 기업의 목표인 이윤의 창출을 위해서는 제품과 서비스가 팔려나가야 하고 그러기 위해서는 결국 '영업활동'이 필요하니까요. 물론 '애플'이나 '구글' 처럼 영업따위가 없이도 근사한 마케팅과 기술력으로 세계 최고 기업이 될 수 있을 것처럼 보이기도 하지만 '잡스'와 '래리 페이지'가 없다면 영업조직은 필요합니다. 따라서 경험많고 노련한, 혹은 패기넘치고 스마트한 영업사원에 대한 수요는 항상 존재할 수 밖에 없습니다. 이직도 상대적으로 쉬운 편이고 의외로 오랫동안 일을 할 수도 있습니다. 두번째 장점은 주도적으로 업무를 할 수 있다는 것입니다. 어느 고객사의 누구를 어떤 타이밍에 만나서 어떻게 우리의 제품을 프로모션 할 것인가? 효과적인 프로모션을 위해서 내부의 다양한 resource를 어떻게 활용할 것인가? 가격은 얼마를 제시할 것이고 향 후 어떠한 협상전략을 가져갈 것인가? 이러한 고민들과 그에 따른 계획과 실행은 오롯이 영업의 역할이며 그 과정에서 주도적으로 업무와 조직을 이끌어 나아가게 됩니다. 저도 돌이켜보면 대리를 막 달았을 때 부터 영업과 관련한 주요 의사 결정을 하고 조직내부의 지원조직에 있는 과,차장급 resource 들에게 역할을 분담하면서 업무를 진행했었던 기억이 납니다. 세번째 장점은 은근히 전문직이라는 것입니다. 여기도 마찬가지로 '대충' 하려면야 아무나 할 수 있지만 '잘'하려면 여러가지 지식과 경험, 자질이 필요합니다. 기업의 여러 업무 중에서 영업만큼 개인의 성과가 명확하게 숫자화 되는 곳이 없다 보니 매우 냉정하고 빈번하게 평가가 내려지고 어느 수준이상으로 잘하지 못하면 쉽게 도태되기도 합니다. 대충 월급도둑을 하면서 조직의 성과에 기대어 프리라이딩하는 것이 상대적을 더 어려운 직무이기도 합니다. 그러다 보니 일정 수준이상으로 성과를 내는 영업사원에 대해서는 회사에서나 업계에서 제법 대우가 괜찮은 편입니다. 네번째 장점은 두번째 장점과 연결되어 있는데 시간 활용이 타 직군에 비해서 훨씬 자유롭다는 것입니다. 막말로 성과만 계속 만들어 낸다면 회사에 출근은 하지 않아도 되는 것이 영업직이지요. 하루종일 데스크에 앉아있는 것에 비해서 유연하게 일정을 짜고 업무를 진행할 수 있다는 것은 영업의 작은 장점 중 한 가지입니다. 제 경우에는 날씨 좋을 때에 세상 구경하러 나갈 수 있다는 것이 참 좋더군요. 마지막으로 영업을 기피하게 만드는 가장 큰 원인인 '갑질'과 '접대'가 갈수록 사라지고 있다는 것도 장점 중 하나입니다. 세상이 좋아지면서 기업의 의사결정 및 구매 프로세스가 계속 투명해지고 '갑질'을 방지하기 위한 다양한 장치들이 생겨나면서 영업 활동은 훨씬 쾌적(?)해 지고 있습니다. 제 경우도 운이 좋아서 인지 예전에 비해서 소위 '접대'라고 하는 술자리는 거의 없습니다. 주로 점심식사, 커피한잔 정도이고 아주 가끔 저녁식사와 그에 이어지는 맥주 한,두잔 정도가 '접대'의 전부입니다. 영업직에서 연상되는 잦은 술자리와 부조리한 접대 문화는 많이 줄어들었거나 사라지고 있다고 할 수도 있겠습니다. 영업직에 관심이 있거나 이제 막 사회에 발을 내딛는 분들께 조금이나마 도움이 되었으면 하는 생각에 글을 적어보았습니다. 위에서 나온거 빼고는 다 단점아니냐고요? 하하하... * Cascade님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2019-06-11 19:56) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다.
