 제가 여러 대학 사학과를 두루두루 경험해보진 못해서 이런 걸 다른 데서도 하는지 모르겠는데, 지금 다니고 있는 학교에선 가끔 요런 걸 합니다. 수업시간에 사진 하나 걸어놓고 그거 분석하기. 1. 위에 보이는 사진은 1966년 8월 모일, 인민일보에 실린 흑백사진을 컬러로 복원한 겁니다. 저기 배나온 아저씨가 모택동, 옆의 젊은 학생은 송빈빈이라고 합니다. 송씨가 모씨 팔에 주장 완장을 채워주고있군요. 저게 바로 그 유명한 홍위병 완장입니다. 사진에는 紅자의 좌변만 보이지만 까짓거 나머지 안보이는 부분이 뭔지 정도야 쉽게 추론할 수 있지요 ㅎㅎ. 2. 장소. 사진의 배경부를 보면 사람이 으마으마하게 많지요? 저기는 천안문광장이고 모인 군중의 수는 대략 1백만명 정도입니다. 대부분 고등학생~대학생 정도구요. 3. 복장. 모택동이나 송빈빈이나 뭔가 누르초로끄므레한 옷을 입고 있지요. 저게 인민해방군 군복입니다. 그런데 지금도 그렇지만 당시에도 민간인이 군복을 입는 건 법으로 금지되어있었습니다. 송빈빈이야 말할 것도 없이 민간인이고, 사실은 모택동도 민간인이기 때문에 군복을 입으면 안됩니다. 그런데 왜 저렇게 대놓고 군복을 입고 있었을까요. 그 비밀은 바로바로.... 다음 항목에서 공개됩니다. 4. 복장2. 모택동과 송빈빈의 군복이 다르다는 걸 이미 눈 밝은 분들은 눈치 채셨을 겁니다. 모씨 쪽이 더 색이 짙고, 빨간 마름모 같은 게 목 칼라에 붙어 있고, 모자도 쓰고 있지요. 반면에 송빈빈의 군복은 색이 옅고 허리에 뭔가 띠 같은 걸 두르고 있는게 보여요. 인민해방군의 군복은 1965년인가에 크게 개편됐어요. 군복에 붙어있는 계급장을 모두 떼어내고 평등한 군대를 만든다 뭐 그런 걸 했지요. 그래서 모택동 군복에 계급장이 있어야할 자리에 빨간 마름모만 있는 것. 그런데 군복을 개혁하고 민간인의 군복착용을 금지하면 생기는 문제가 하나 있어요. 그 전까지 복무하다 전역한 사람들이 소지한 예비군복까지 다 바꿔준다거나 다 버리라거나 할 수는 없는 거잖아요? 옷 한 벌이 귀한 때인데 말이죠. 그래서 나온 타협안이 '군복이 아니라는 걸 명확하게 드러낼 만한 추가장치를 하면 입어도 괜찮다' 였어요. 그래서 송빈빈은 군복에 허리띠를 하고 있었던 거임. 송빈빈의 군복 색이 모택동의 그것과 달랐던 이유도 이때문이에요. 저거 군복개편 이전 군복이거든요. 예비군복 ㅎㅎ. 5. 복장 3. 그래도 이상한 점이 하나 있어요. 송빈빈은 딱봐도 군대에 발도 안 담궈봤을 게 뻔해보이는 데 대체 어디서 군복을 구했던 걸까요. 동묘앞에 가서 사왔나? 당시는 한국전쟁 직후라 동묘앞엔 못가봤을 테니 결국 남은 가능성은 하나 뿐. 바로 엄마아빠 군복이었던 거심미다. 엄마아빠가 인민해방군 출신이라니. 그렇다면 송빈빈은 대를 이은 진성빨갱이었겠군요. 사실 송빈빈의 아빠 송임궁은 중공의 전쟁영웅이자 12대장군 중 하나인가... 여튼 장군님입니다. 모택동처럼 호남성 출신으로 빨갱이 중의 새빨갱이였던 것. 6. 복장 4. 좋다. 송빈빈이 엄빠군복을 가꼬나왔다고 칩시다. 그렇다면 군인이 아닌 모택동은 어쩐일로 '신형' 군복을 입고있었던 걸까요? 자기가 가진 아주 옛날 예비군복을 입고나왔다면 모를까 신형군복을 입고 천안문 광장에 나타났다니 좀 이상합니다. 또 한 가지 이상한 점은 송빈빈의 예비군복이 손질이 잘 되어있고 나름 맵시가 있는 것에 반해 모씨 쪽은 뭔가 다림질도 안되어있고 몹시 후줄근하다는 거지요. 이거 군대 갔다오신 분들은 다 알겠지만 군복 각을 잡는 건 장교들이 제일 심합니다. 늘 칼같이 다려입어야 하지만, 특히나 이렇게 대규모 군중 앞에 나서야 하는 중요한 행사에는 아끼고 아끼던 초 슈퍼 특 S급 군복을 꺼내입어야 합니다. 모택동이 저런 후줄근한 '신형' 군복을 입었던 건 사실.... 저게 모택동 본인의 군복이 아니어서 그랬던 것입니다. 놀랍게도, 모택동은 천안문 행사 당일날 자기 옆에 있던 호위병 한 명의 옷을 벗겨서 (ㅗㅜㅑ) 그걸 급하게 입고 나타났던 거시었던 거십니다. 7. 사실은 이렇습니다. 홍위병은 모택동이 나타나기 한참 전에 이미 조직되어서 날뛰고 있었습니다. 송빈빈과 같은 진성 새빨갱이 학생들이 주도적으로 만들어서 북경 전체에서 넘실넘실 '활약'을 하고 있었지요. 모택동은 당시 북경에 없었습니다. 남방지역 도는 중이었음. 소식을 듣고 급히 북경으로 돌아왔고, 학생들은 모주석을 보고 싶다고 아우성입니다. 모택동은 학생들에게 일단 진정하고 48시간 뒤에 천안문 광장에서 보자고 통지합니다. 모택동은 쪼끔 긴장했어요. 게릴라 콘서트를 예고했는데 아무도 안나타나면 졸라 슬프잖아요. 아 슈바 한 5만명도 안 나오고 그러면 어뜨카지 막 이르케 걱정하면서 차를 타고 천안문 쪽으로 가고 있는데 이게 분위기가 심상찮은 거예요. 5만명은 무슨 딱 봐도 백만대군에 가까운 학생 빨갱이들이 개떼처럼 모여있는 거임. 모씨는 깜짝 놀랐지요. 아 슈바 대성공이긴 한데 이거 어뜨케 수습하냐. 대충 견적을 보니까 좀 '코드'를 맞춰야겠는데 가만보니 죄다 구형 군복을 집에서 꺼내입고 온 게 눈에 띱니다. 아하. 나도 군복을 입고 나가야 겠구만 이거. 근데 군복이 없네. 아 어카지. 그래서 옆에 있던 병사의 군복을 홀랑 벗겨가지고 그걸 입고 대중 앞에 나타나게 되었던 것이었습니다. 8. 학생들이, 북경에서만 100만명이 모여서, 모택동 모택동을 외치는데, 대개 구형 군복을 입고 나왔다? 오호. 뭔가 이상한 냄새가 납니다. 시계를 돌려봅시다. 1948년 공산당은 국민당과의 내전에서 거의 확실한 승기를 잡았고, 1949년엔 마침내 국민당을 대만으로 쫓아내고 북경 한 가운데, 천안문 광장에서 중화인민공화국의 수립을 선언합니다. 오랜 시간 처절한 전쟁을 벌였던 공산당의 영웅들은 새로운 세상을 열었다는 벅찬 감동과 희망에 부풀어 이제 애를 좀 나아도 되겠다는 생각을 합니다. 그래서 1949년생~50년생 베이비붐이 시작되지요. 공산당 사령부는 대장정의 종착지였던 섬서성 연안이었습니다. 하지만 이제 북경을 점령하고 새로운 나라를 세웠으니 주요 당원동지들은 모두 북경으로 옮겨왔지요. 북경에서 애를 낳았으니 이제 북경은 빨갱이 쥬니어 배양소가 된 것입니다. 9. 저 사진이 1966년이라고 했지요? 49~50년생 빨갱이 쥬니어들이 마침 고2~고3이 된 게 1966년입니다. ㅋ...ㅋ.....ㅋ....... 고2~고3이면 최대 관심사가 뭘까요. 대입이죠 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ. 그런데 대학 가는 건 갈수록 엄청 빡센 일이 되고있었습니다. 대학 정원에 비해 대학 가고 싶어하는 애들이 엄청 많았을 뿐더러, 세상엔 빨갱이 쥬니어만 있는게 아니기도 했거든요. 국민당시절 국민당 및 정부에 복무했던 많은 사람들이 국민당을 따라 대만으로 가는 대신 걍 중국에 남았습니다. 중공도 이들을 다 숙청할 순 없으니 걍 냅두고 하던 일 그대로 하라고 했지요. 아무리 오래 싸웠다 해도, 예컨대, 우정본부 전체를 다 피바다로 만들면 당장 내일부터 편지는 누가 보내주겠어요. 걍 냅두는 것 말곤 대안이 없었던 것. 그래서 북경에서는 유치원부터 고등학교에 이르기까지 교실 내에 빨갱이 쥬니어와 (구) 부르주아 쥬니어들이 같이 모여 살게 되었지요. 이게 대입 전까진 그래도 그냥저냥 지냈는데, 대입 때가 되고보니까 대체로 부르주아 출신들이 공부를 더 잘합니다. 빨갱이 쥬니어들은 빡칩니다. 시바 혁명을 했는데 이게 뭐야 ㅋㅋㅋ 부르주아 세력은 그대로 살아남아서 대대손손 호의호식하네 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ 혁명을 하긴 했지만 '완수'는 안되었다는 찜찜하고 불쾌한 기분이 감돕니다. 10. 북경지역의 한 최상위권 고등학교의 학생들 가운데 진성빨갱이 집안 자녀들이 마침내 66년 초에 봉기합니다. 이들은 학교 본관을 점거하고 깃발을 찢어서 '홍위병'이라는 문구를 쓴 뒤 자발적으로 팔에 두릅니다. 그리고 다른 학생들을 선동해서 홍위병부대의 수를 늘립니다. 이 때 이들은 엄빠의 군복을 가지고와서 입고 다니는 것으로 자신들의 남다른 출신성분을 과시합니다. 홍위병시대 인물들에 대한 심층 인터뷰에 따르면 당시 이들이 자신들을 비판하던 다른 학생들에게 자주 내뱉었던 말이 "우리 엄빠는 1948년에 연안에 있었는데, 너희 엄마아빠는 그때 혹시 어디계셨냐? 응? 아주 궁금한데?" 였다고 합니다. 그리고 뭐 예상하셨겠지만 송빈빈이 바로 이 고등학교에서 최초로 봉기했던 홍위병 중 하나였지요. 11. 모택동이 부재중인 북경에선 문화차원에서의 혁명을 요구하는 이 젊은이들의 봉기를 어떻게 처리해야 할지 몰라 우왕좌왕합니다. 일단은 그냥 둘 순 없으니 조사단을 파견해서 주요 리더들을 따라다니며 감시하고 보고서를 쓰고 필요하면 인터뷰도 할 것을 지시했지요. 하지만 조사단은 홍위병들의 화만 불러일으켰고, 멀리서 소식을 들은 모택동은 조사단을 당장 철수시킬 것을 명합니다. 12. 홍위병들은 보다 완전한 혁명을 원했고, 그래서 혁명의 아이콘이자 가장 급진 빨갱이 포지션을 잡고있던 모택동을 자기편으로 인식합니다. 그래서 어서 빨리 모택동 동지를 접견하게 해달라고 아우성이었지요. 모택동은 그렇게 북경으로 달려와서, 얘들을 만나고, 그리고는 얘들을 진압하는 건 불가능하니까 어떻게든 써먹어야겠다고 마음을 굳힙니다. 마침 당 내에서 덜빨간 친구들이 자기 자리를 위협하고 있었거든요. 유소기라든가. 그래서 이 빨간 젊은이들을 자기편으로 만들 수 있으면 당내 '우파분자'들을 손쉽게 제거할 수 있겠다고 생각했지요. 13. 그렇게 모택동이 백만명에 달하는 리틀 빨갱이들 앞에 어설프게 군복을 입고 나타나는 순발력 퍼포먼스를 펼치면서 문화대혁명이 시작됩니다. 말하자면, 문화대혁명은 위에서 일으킨 운동이라기보단 밑에서 일으킨 운동이라는 거지요. 그래서 지금도 문혁시절을 그리워하는 중국인은 있어도 대약진운동시절을 그리워하는 사람은 없습니다. 전자는 자기들이 주인공이었으니 추억할 만한 거리가 있는데 후자는 위에서 아래로의 강제동원이었으니까요. 14. 이렇게 보면 작금의 중국 뿐 아니라 역사상의 수 많은 중국 국가들이 왜 대중운동을 그토록 싫어하고 억제하려했는지 대강 견적이 나옵니다. 대중운동은 들불과도 같아서 한 번 스파크가 튀고 나면 중앙정부에서 어떻게 손을 쓰기 어려운 수준으로 커져버리거든요. 그리고 통제를 벗어난 대중운동은 아주 자주 '자연재해' 수준으로 발전합니다. 멀게는 황건적 때부터 가깝게는 청말의 태평천국이나 의화단 운동이 다 그랬지요. 15. 이런 대중운동이 발발하면 중앙정부의 대응책은 두 가지 뿐입니다. 하나는 어떻게든 잡아버리는 것, 다른 하나는 어떻게든 그 기세를 다른 곳으로 돌려서 잘 써먹는 것 (;;). 전자의 경우가 1989년의 천안문사태였다면, 후자의 경우가 문화대혁명이었다고 할 수 있습니다. 그런 면에서 문화대혁명과 천안문사태는 정반대의 운명을 가지고 태어난 쌍둥이였던 것. 16. 잘 써먹힌 운동이라는 점에서 문혁은 또 청말의 의화단 운동과도 닮았습니다. 의화단의 주요 모토는 '청나라를 도와 서양 오랑캐를 몰아내자' 였지요. 하지만 이들이 실제로 몰아내고 싶었던 건 서양 오랑캐가 아니라 기독교로 개종한 동료 중국인이었고, 그래서 의화단 봉기 초기의 사상자들은 거의 대부분 중국인들....ㅠ.ㅠ 특히 중국의 경우는 마을단위 개종이 흔했기 때문에 결국 뜯어보면 A마을이 이웃한 기독교 마을인 B마을을 습격해서 다 태우고 다 노략질하고 죽이고 강간한 뒤 양놈들을 물리치고 청나라를 도왔다고 해버리는 식이 많았습니다. 의화단 운동의 중심지인 북중국은 혼돈의 도가니탕이 되었지요. 하지만 운동의 명분이 기가막히게 청나라 조정의 입맛에 맞았기 때문에 정부는 '이건 누르기보단 써먹어야겠다'고 생각하게 됩니다. 그래서 의화단 무장병들을 슬며시 이용해서 외국공관을 습격한다거나 선교사를 죽인다거나 하고...열강이 개입하고... 다 박살나고... 여튼 그랬던 것. 17. 이런 이유로 인하여, 현재 중국의 검열기조도 우리가 흔히 생각하는 것과는 좀 다릅니다. 예컨대, 시진핑은 이렇게이렇게 해야 한다든가, 시진핑은 이런 조치를 취했어야 옳다든가 하는 식의 비판적인 글을 올려도 중국정부가 발벗고 나서서 검열하거나 처벌하지 않습니다. 다만, '이러이러하므로 우리 모두 몇 날 몇 시에 어디 광장에서 모이자' 라고 쓰는 순간.....ㅎㅎ.....ㅎㅎㅎ.... 고거슨 결코 안댐. 비판은 되는데, 모이는 건 안됩니다. 아무튼 안댐. 18. 이런 이유로 인하여, 중국정부가 무엇보다도 무서워하는 건 '얼핏 듣기에 참 좋은 이유로' 사람들이 많이 모이는 겁니다. 모택동사상 연구회라든지, 막시즘 연구모임이라든지, 노동자 파업 지원모임이라든지, 이런 모임들이 사회주의 중국에서 탄압당했다는 괴상한 소식이 간간히 들려오는 것도 다 그게 '듣기에 참 좋은 이유로 사람들이 모여서'이기 때문입니다. 19. 그 중에서도 가장 기피되는 건 북경소재 대학교 학생들이 위와 같은 듣기 좋은 이유로 큰 모임을 갖는 겁니다. 천안문 사태도, 문화대혁명도, 좀 더 전으로 올라가면 오사운동 및 기타 다른 작은 운동들도 다 북경 학생들이 시작했지요. 북경 학생들이 대자보 붙이고 구호를 외치고 다수가 모여서 어디로 행진한다는 말만 들려도 중국 정부가 알레르기를 일으키는 것도 이해가 갑니다. 북경대 학생들이 막시즘 연구회를 만들어서 파업 노동자들을 지원하는 단체행동을 했다? 안잡혀가는 게 용한 것 ㅎㅎ 20. 참고로 혁명전사로 활약하던 송빈빈은 후에 미국으로 유학가서 무려 MIT에서 박사를 받고 쭉 보스턴 등지에서 일하며 살았습니다. 얼마 전에야 중국에 귀국한 뒤 문혁시절 자신의 과오를 사죄했지요.
