보통 저는 인터넷에 글을 잘 쓰지 않습니다. 그 이유는 음습한 성격이 한 몫 한 것도 있지만, 어린 시절 커뮤니티나 게임 길드 활동을 하다가 허무함만 가득했던 기억들이 일종의 트라우마처럼 남았던 모양입니다. 그래도 아주 가끔, 겁이 나서 궁금함에 용기를 내서 몇차례 질문을 인터넷에 올린 적이 있습니다. 그 곳 중 하나가 바로 이 사이트였고, 그때 질문했던 내용은 건강과 관련된 내용이었죠. 그런 제가 다시 이 곳에 글을 쓰는 이유는 오랫동안 그와 관련된 투병생활을 하고, 아직도 그 답을 찾지 못한 상황에 맞이하고 싶지 않았던 불행들이 찾아온 것을 견디지 못했기 때문입니다. 사실 배설과도 같은 글이죠. 그래도, 그때 답변해주셨던 분들이 고맙다는 생각이 앞서서 이 곳에서나마 조금 토로하고 가고 싶습니다. 그리 유쾌한 이야기도 아니고, 글솜씨도 무뎌져 엉망이라 가독성이 불편한 점은 미리 사죄드립니다. 너무 오랜만에 글을 써보네요. 이제는 시간도 명확하게 기억나지 않습니다. 2015년말쯤으로 기억되네요. 수업 준비를 위해 그날도 오랫동안 키보드 앞에서 손목과 목이 끊어질것 같은 통증을 견디면서 앉아있었습니다. 그러다 갑자기 하반신이 통증이 심각하게 나타나며 특히 항문쪽으로 통증이 나타나더군요. 처음에는 누구나 그렇듯 치질류로 착각했고, 동네 좀 큰 병원을 갔을때에도 항문농양이라는 판명을 받고 항생제를 먹으면서 지켜보았습니다. 그러나 약에 취해서 구토감만 몰려오고, 정작 다리 전체가 아픈 감각은 전혀 나아지지 않더군요. CT까지 찍어보고 나서야 농양은 치유되었거나 혹은 다른 병인 것 같다며, 소견서 한장 들고 사는 곳 가까이 있는 대학병원으로 옮겼습니다. 대학병원에서는 내시경 검사를 해보자고 권유했고, 역시나 결과는 전혀 문제 없음이었습니다. 결국 공부하는 입장인데다가 예민한 성격이 문제인 듯 하니 잘 먹고 잘 지내면 될 것 같다고 하면서 이야기를 들었죠. 하지만 하루하루 통증에 시달려서 수시간도 앉아있지 못하는 상황은 계속되고, 이제는 생업으로 삼아야하는 공부고 뭐고 아무것도 진행할 수 없을만큼 통증이 하반신 전체에서, 그리고 곳곳에서 더욱 강해지는 나날을 겪다보니 공포에 질리기 시작했습니다. 처음에는 더러운 사람이나 걸리는 병에 걸렸다고 퉁명스럽게 쏘아붙인 아버지조차도 저를 지켜보며 점점 당황하기 시작했습니다. 이후 비뇨기과 및 항문외과로 유명하다고 손꼽히는 병원은 모조리 다녔습니다. 그때 왜 이쪽 병원계통으로만 다녔나 하고 물으신다면 그 당시에는 엉덩이 자체가 너무 아프고 항문부터 직장까지 올라오는 통증 자체가 그중에서도 가장 선명했기 때문에 골반 내부쪽으로 가장 겁이 많이 났기 때문입니다. 그 와중에 수많은 검사, 그리고 친척들의 권유로 한의원도 종종 가서 전신에 침을 맞는 일과를 매일매일 일주일 내내 해본 적도 있습니다. 그렇게 방황하기를 수 달째, 결국 한 항문외과 선생님께서 제 병은 흔히 말하는 일과성 직장통 계통이 아니라, 만성통증과 거근증후군 양쪽 모두의 증상을 가지고 있기 때문에 전혀 다른 병으로 볼 수 밖에 없다라는 진단을 내렸습니다. 그러니 전혀 다른 계통으로 진료를 보라는 권유를 받았습니다. 아버지는 이제 충격을 크게 받으신 상태였습니다. 하고 있던 자영업 자체도 많이 기운 상황에 이미 둘째아들이 심각한 우울증으로 몇년째 집안에서 틀어박힌 상황에, 이제는 첫째까지 갑자기 원인을 알 수 없는 병이라는 소리를 들었으니깐요. 결국 아버지께서 십수년전에 잠깐 알고 계셨던 인맥 하나를 부여잡고 모 대학병원에 근무중인 선생님께 상담을 드렸습니다. 그 선생님께서는 한 번 그분이 근무하고 계시는 병원으로 바꿔보는 것은 어떤가하고 권유하셨고, 저는 그때 이게 절때 금방 풀릴 문제가 아님을 직감했습니다. 그래서 일단 마음의 결심을 하고 지도교수님께 찾아가 졸업논문 제출을 보류하게 됩니다. 교수님께서는 당연히 제 건강이 가장 중요하다고 말씀하셨지만, 첫 제자가 논문을 낼 준비를 하고 있던 것을 기대하고 계셨던 상황인 만큼 실망한 기색도 없진 않으셨던 듯 합니다. 그리고 저는 한 대학병원의 신경과로 옮기게 됩니다. 새롭게 방문한 신경과에서는 제가 목과 허리쪽으로 평소에 통증을 느꼈던 점을 착안, 그리고 허리쪽으로 좀 통증 자체를 느끼는 증세가 있기도 해서 MRI를 찍어보고 시작하자고 권유했습니다. 그러나 검사 결과, 평소에 동네 병원에서 목디스크가 있을 것이라고 주장했던 것과 달리 전혀 목과 허리에는 이상조차 없었습니다. 그떄부터 시작되는 각종 신경검사는 모두 정상으로 통과. 검사 결과가 차라리 뭐라도 나왔으면 좋겠다고 병원 앞에서 혼자 주저앉은 적도 있었네요. 가족에게 아무 이상 없다는 것을 알리는 것이 이렇게 슬플수 있다는 것을 이때 처음 알았습니다. 이 과정에서 점점 통증은 전신으로 번지고 있었습니다. 발병 초기에는 하반신을 중심으로 나타나던 증상이, 이제는 머리끝까지 통증이 올라오기가 수십차례입니다. 발작처럼 나타날떄도 있고, 은은하게 지속될때가 있습니다. 스스로 통증의 위치를 판단할 수 없는 단계까지 왔습니다. 단지 확실한 것은 저는 그래도 스스로 걸어다닐 수 있는 상황이고, 이 악물고 다니면 며칠은 버틸만한 운동능력은 유지되고 있다는 점이었습니다. 그것은 다행이기도 하면서 한편으로 제 몸상태에 대해 제 자신과 주위 사람들을 착각하게 만드는 요소기도 했습니다. 물론 이러한 만성통증은 실제로 누워있을수록 더 악화되는 경우가 많기 때문에 많이 움직여야 한다고 선생님께선 말씀하셨습니다. 그러나 그 선생님의 기준과 제가 실제로 할 수 있는 기준까지는 괜찮았지만, 주위 시선은 전혀 달랐죠. 특히 아버지께서 저를 참 모질게 대하셨습니다. 그 감정은 물론 잘 알고 있었습니다. 내 아들이 아플리가 없다. 뛰면 된다. 운동부족이다. 이러한 강한 믿음 아래에 저를 계속해서 움직이게 만드셨고, 제 병을 인정한다고 말씀하시지만 마치 꾀병처럼 취급하시기 일수였습니다. 불필요한 감정충돌이었지만, 그때의 아버지와 저는 어쩔 수 없이 충돌할 수밖에 없었습니다. 그래서 저는 그러한 모진 소리를 듣고 이악물고 폭설이 내리던 바깥 온도가 외출 자제할 만큼 뜨겁던 뛰어나가서 걷고 달렸습니다. 그 과정에서 우울증에 걸린 동생이 평소 열지 않고 항상 닫고 있던 방문을 열고 나와 저와 아버지를 중재하는 상황도 종종 연출되었습니다. 결국 저는 이제 여러 과를 돌며 협진을 받기 시작합니다. 마취통증과에서 성상신경차단술이라 하는 시술도 받아보고, 신경과에서는 여러 약을 바꿔가면서 제 상황을 지켜봅니다. 저는 그 약을 먹고 부작용과 효과를 매일 기록해봅니다. 그리고 한달 후 정리해서 읽어보고, 결국 별 변화없음을 토로하는것을 반복할 뿐이었습니다. 저를 진료하는 의사선생님들에게 죄송하다는 생각만 가득했습니다. 진료볼떄마다 제가 선생님께 드리는 이야기는 제 스스로 느끼기에 어린아이의 옹알거림 혹은 미친이의 횡설수설을 반복하고 있는 것 뿐이었으니깐요. 이 과정에서 아버지는 결국 종교를 바꾸기까지 합니다. 이 과정에는 친척의 강권도 있었고, 아버지 스스로 종교를 바꾸면 낫는다는 희망을 잡고 싶으셨던것 같습니다. 하지만 저는 그 종교를 그렇게 좋아하지 않습니다. 어렸을 적 마음을 떠나보냈고, 커서도 몇차례 다녀봤지만 도저히 맞지 않았으니깐요. 이제 아버지와 친척의 주장은 제가 종교를 다니지 않아서 아픈 것이라는 래파토리로 바뀌었습니다. 그 과정에서 저를 진료하던 신경과 선생님은 제가 우울증 증세가 있는 것을 알아 차리신듯 그쪽으로 진료를 권유했지만, 저는 제 스스로 돈버는 입장도 이제 아니거니와 아버지의 반대로인해 정신과 치료는 받지 않고 그냥 항불안제만 먹으며 지내는 것으로 상황을 지켜내야 했습니다. 이러한 시간 속에서 수없이 운명을 원망했습니다, 왜 내가 이런 병에 걸려야 했던 걸까. 그리고 수십 번을 고민했습니다. 왜 나는 아직도 이 목숨을 부여잡고 있는 걸까. 절망이 너무 오랫동안 지속되었습니다. 아버지는 끝까지 네 병은 병이 아니다라는 이야기만 하고 있을때마다 가슴이 쓰라렸습니다. 단순히 아버지를 원망한 적도 있지만, 그 말 자체가 무슨 의미인지 잘 알기 때문입니다. 나만큼이나 얼마나 절망하고 있으면 저렇게 말씀하실까. 그래서 버텨야겠다는 생각을 했습니다. 언젠가 다 같이 버티면 이겨낼 수 있을꺼라 생각했습니다. 실제로 마약성 진통제를 쓰기 시작한 시점에서 아주 미약하게나마 통증이 좀 감소하는 것을 느끼기 시작했고, 이 과정이 새로운 희망의 시작이라 생각했습니다. 하지만 이미 지쳐버린 사람이 있었습니다. 아버지께서 스스로 목숨을 거두셨습니다. 이유는 어디에서나 볼 법한 이야기입니다. 새로운 사업을 시작하셨지만 결국 그 사업을 감당하지 못하셨고, 결국 여러가지 아버지의 잘못된 선택이 뒤늦게 아버지의 목을 졸라왔었기 때문입니다. 추가로 세상은 아버지의 기대와 다륵게 변하고 있었죠. 그러한 사실에 대해 아버지는 직접적으로 말씀하시지 않았지만, 저와 제 동생은 이미 어렴풋하게 알고 있었습니다. 하지만 아파서 제대로 움직이지 못하는 저와 우울증에서 이제서야 겨우 사람들 많은 곳을 혼자서 갈 수 있게 된 제 동생으로서는 당장 무언가 할 수 있는게 없었기 때문에 지켜볼수 밖에 없었습니다. 죄송한 마음에 아버지를 많이 위로한다고 위로했습니다. 하지만 그 과정을 견디지 못한 아버지는 자신의 부고를 한 형사를 통해 전해오는 방법으로써 이 세상을 떠나셨음을 알렸습니다. 남긴 유언은 간단했습니다. 자신의 장례는 치루지 마라. 그리고 우리 형제의 병은 예수님만이 알고 계신다. 그 유언을 받아보았을때, 제 형제는 아버지께선 제 병을 끝까지 인정할 수 없었구나라고 작게 웃었습니다. 아니 울다가 지쳐 웃었습니다. 일단 아버지 유언은 어겼습니다. 아버지는 제 아버지이기 전에 제 친척들에겐 형제이고, 그들을 존중해서라도 장례는 치루어야 했으니깐요. 그 과정에서 저는 아버지께서 믿던 종교는 끝까지 믿지 않았지만, 그분이 마지막까지 믿던 종교 방식으로 장례를 치루었습니다. 아버지께서 가시는 길이 편안했으면 하는 바람이었으니깐요. 물론 그 종교의 수장분께선 제 아버지의 죽음은 우리 형제 탓이라고 꾸짖으셨습니다. 울다 지쳐 쓰러진 동생과 어렸을적부터 형제처럼 같이 살았기 때문에 같이 울다가 쓰러진 사촌동생들과 함께 그 이야기를 듣고 있던 저는 화가 나지만 한편으로 반박할 수 없었습니다. 그냥 참 서글픈 이야기다라는 말만 주문처럼 되내였습니다. 더욱이 장례 도중 가장 당혹스러우면서도 실소가 터져나오는 점은, 제 아버지 장례 장소가 십여년전 제 할아버지와 할머니 장례식을 치룬 바로 그 자리 그 장소였다는 겁니다. 저는 십년만에 그때 섰던 자리에 똑같이 서서 진통제를 먹으며 장례를 치루었습니다. 이제 현실만 남았습니다. 병은 사실 더이상의 큰 차도가 있지 않습니다. 명확한 병명조차 없는 상황만큼이나 아버지가 떠나신 후 남겨진 문제들 역시 간단치 않고, 이것을 풀어가는 과정에서 갑작스럽게 친척들과는 멀어지게 되었습니다. 아버지의 바람과 다르게 그 종교에선 더욱 멀어지게 되었네요. 그래도 어떻게든 살아보려고 뛰어다녔고, 1주일 움직이고 2주일 누워지내는 모습을 반복합니다. 수없이 죽음을 고민했고, 그래도 이제 하나밖에 남지 않은 제 동생을 보며 삶을 다짐했습니다. 그래서 다시 새로운 시도로 마약성 진통제 용량을 붙이는 패취형태를 추가해서 늘려보기도 하고, 그 과정에서 누구든지 겪는 부작용에 간단하게 괴로워하며 버텨보고 있습니다. 병은 참 어렵습니다. 저를 진료해주시던 선생님께선 현대의학으로서는 제 병을 설명할 수 없다고 말씀해주셨습니다. 솔직하게 말씀해주셨던 그분의 말씀이 고맙기도 하고, 한편으로는 참 세상에는 아직도 모르는게 많은데 그 중에 내가 그걸 걸렸네하는 쓴웃음이 걸리는 마음이 들기도 합니다. 앞으로 어떻게 될지는 잘 모르겠습니다. 그러나 노력해서 조금이라도 낫도록 노력해야겠죠. 이제 꿈꿨던 미래는 흐려졌습니다. 장례중에 도착하신 교수님 앞에서 순간 쓰러져 엉엉 울며 죄송하다고 계속해서 되내인 것은 그 사실을 무엇보다 잘 알고 있기 때문입니다. 그래도 어떤 점에서는 여기까지 버틸 수 있었던 것도 스스로에게 장하다고 말해주고 싶었습니다. 그리고 여기까지 버티는데 도움을 주셨던 사소한 이야기들이 저에겐 정말로 큰힘이 되었던 기억이 있어서 버틸 수 있습니다. 그래서 이 사이트에 다시 한번 글을 남기며 감사함을 토로한다고 서두에 말씀드렸던 겁니다. 그래도 그 짧은 답변이 있었기 때문에 병원을 바꿀 수 있도록 아버지를 설득해볼 수 있었기 때문입니다. 하지만 제가 봐도 감사하다는 이야기치고는 너무 자질구레한 이야기가 가득한 투병기입니다. 아무래도 저는 또 감사함이라는 가면 아래에 그냥 누구에게라도 제 슬픔을 토로하고 싶었던 것 같습니다. 참 저는 이기적인 사람입니다. 몇년 만에 긴 글을 써보았습니다. 엉터리 문장과 맞춤법도 틀린게 눈에 보이네요. 수정한다고 수정해보았지만 이제는 기억도 잘 나지 않습니다. 너무 우울한 이야기를 남긴건가 싶어서 죄송합니다. 그래도 감사하다는 마음
