 '원서충' 이라는 말을 오늘 처음 봤어요 ; 소설은 모름지기 원서로 읽어야 제맛이지, 하는 독자들을 비꼬는 말 같아요. 오래된 떡밥이죠. 번역된 외국 소설을 필사한다고 하면 번역체 필사해봐야 아무 의미 없다는 사람들도 있고. 저는 여기에 대해 제 자신이 외국어를 모르기 때문이어서인지 몰라도 않이 그게 무슨 상관이야 라고 생각하는 입장이었지만 굳이 외국어 못하는거 자랑할 필요는 없기에 항상 쭈구리고 있다가 다른 커뮤니티에서 누군가가 질문한 글에 답변을 달다가 말이 좀 길어지게 되었는데 본의아니게 제 생각이 잘 정리된거 같아 옮겨봅니다. 댓글들이 많았었는데 제 의견과 거기에 반박하는 의견중 핵심적인 것만 추렸습니다. 질문자 : 번역본에는 문체라는 개념을 쓰면 안되나? 번역을 거치고 나면 느낄 수 없는 원문의 분위기도 있겠지만 거치고 나서도 문체라고 여길만한 요소들은 있지 않나. 전개해나가는 서술의 순서라든가 시점이라든가 서술의 대상으로 선택하는 작가의 방식이라든가. 번역을 하더라도 그 문장의 구성은 숨길 수 있는게 아니잖음? 나 : 되지. 누가 안된대? 질문자 : 아래 글에서 누가 <번역본에 어떻게 문체가 있음?> 하길래... 내가 단어의 정의 나 개념을 잘 모르겠어서... A : 번역하면 문체가 훼손되는 경우가 많지. 카뮈 이방인은 프랑스어 복합과거로 쓰였는데 한국어엔 없는 문법임. 모옌이나 마르케스가 쓰는 환상적인 문체도 한국어로 옮기면 거의 느낄 수가 없다. 한국어는 어휘가 미발달한 요소야. 나 : 훼손되면 훼손되는대로 그것도 엄연히 그 작가의 문체라고 생각함. 예를들어 원문이 훼손된 한국어판 백년의 고독이 있을 때, 다른 외국어 작가 번역판에서 그와 유사한 문체가 존재할 수 있는가? 하면 당연히 불가능하거든. 훼손되었더라도 그것은 <유일한 마르케스 한국어 번역판>이라는거고, 우리가 살면서 콜롬비아 언어를 배울 일이 없는 한 그것을 마르케스의 문체라 단정지어도 무슨 문제가 있느냐는 거지. 우리가 접할 수 있는 마르케스는 오직 그거 하나뿐인데. A : 훼손된 문체도 문체면 그건 번역가의 문체지. 훼손된 문체를 만든 건 번역가니까. 작가가 전혀 개입하지 않고 원문의 문체와 구분되는 별개의 문체가 탄생했는데 그게 어떻게 작가의 문체냐? 나 : 번역가 아무개가 각각 마르케스와 카프카와 조이스를 번역했으면 그 세 작품의 문장들이 모두 번역가 아무개의 문체라고 할 수 있음? 그건 불가능해. 각각의 작가를 번역할 때 아무리 번역가 아무개의 영향력이 크다 해도 결국 가장 큰 바탕이 되는건 원작가가 누구인가 하는거고, 그 번역을 통해서만 해당 작품을 읽을수밖에 없는 독자에게는 사실상 각각의 원작가의 문체로 받아들여도 된다고 생각함. A : 문체가 무슨 뜻인지 모르는거 아냐? 난 번역하면 문체가 지워진다고 한 적 없어. 나 : ok. 그럼 됐음. 나도 그 정도 이상의 의미로 주장하는건 아님. B : 죄와벌만 해도 국내뿐 아니라 세계적으로 수많은 번역이 존재하는데 이런 번역본을 읽고 도끼 문체를 왈가왈부하는건 코끼리 본적 없는 사람이 코끼리에 대해 말하는거야. 어디까지나 원서가 있고 번역이 있는거. 번역자는 많은 원서를 접하면서 어떻게 번역해야 좋을지 매번 고민할거고, 거기서부터 번역은 원서와 결이 달라. 2차 가공된거야. 번역가가 원서의 문체를 흉내내서 원서의 뉘앙스를 살렸다고 그걸 원저자의 문체라고 할 수 있어? 나 : 세상의 모든 사물은 생명체의 눈에 있는 그대로 비치지 않아. 빛과 망막의 왜곡이 반드시 끼어들게 돼. 나무에서 사과가 떨어지는 모습을 뱀과 댕댕이와 인간이 같은 자리에서 똑같이 보았다고 해도 그 셋에게 비치는 모습은 전부 달라. 하지만 그것이 다르다고 해도 그 셋이 본 것은 분명 나무에서 사과가 떨어지는 광경인것만은 분명해. 죄와벌은 번역의 왜곡이 없는 다른 경로를 통해서는 절대로 한국인의 의식에 닿을 수 없어. (특별한 경우가 아니고서는 우리가 러시아어를 배울 이유가 없다는 전제 하에) 그럼 우리가 유일하게 접할 수 있는 죄와벌을 바로 코앞에 두고 이것은 번역본이기 때문에 도끼의 문체가 아니라고 한다는건 코끼리와 마주해서 빛과 망막의 왜곡 때문에 이건 진짜 코끼리가 아니라고 말하는 거랑 뭐가 다르냐 이거지. 흉내내서 살린거라기보다는 현실적으로 가능한 한도에서 최대한 그대로 옮긴거잖아. 흉내하고는 좀 다르다고 생각함. 하지만 반드시 예 / 아니오 라는 대답을 요구한다면 나도 아니오라고 할수밖에 없긴 해. 결국 내가 처음에 말했던것도 <왜곡>을 인정한 상태에서 <해당 나라의 언어를 습득하는 것이 불가능한 독자에게>라는 가정을 붙인거니까 주장을 끝까지 밀고가기에는 한계가 있다는걸 인정. 여기까지고, 아래로는 움베르트 에코의 <움베르트 에코를 둘러싼 번역 이야기>에 나오는 내용입니다. 전 세계의 독자 가운데 90%는 전쟁과 평화를 번역으로 읽었지만 중국인, 영국인, 이탈리아인 세 사람이 전쟁과 평화를 논하기 위해 마주하게 되었다면 전원은 안드레이 공작이 죽었다는 것에 동의할 뿐만 아니라 대부분의 미묘한 차이에도 불구하고 톨스토이에 의해 표현된 도덕적 원리를 기꺼이 인정할 것이다. 번역은 기본적으로 부정확한 현상이다. 완전한 동의어가 존재하지 않는 이상 번역은 불가능한 원리에 따른 결과이기 때문이다. 그런데 엄격한 논리적 검증에 비추어 보면 완벽한 커뮤니케이션이라는 것도 마찬가지로 존재하지 않는다. 모든 커뮤니케이션은 이론상으로는 불완전하지만 실천상으로는 잘 실현된다. 번역의 불완전성이라는 것은 다른 모든 커뮤니케이션 행위에 내포된 정도와 별 다른 것도 아니다. . . . 장미의 이름 영어판의 번역은 모든 나라 판본 중에서도 언론에 의해 백미로 평가받고 있는데 영어판의 번역에는 원서와 비교했을 때 무수한 생략과 누락이 발견된다. 이러한 사실의 발견에도 영어판 번역에 대한 평가는 흔들리지 않는다. 번역에서 가장 중요한, 원작자의 단호한 스타일과 예술적 개성을 효과적으로 전달했기 때문이다. * 토비님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2019-03-12 18:12) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다.
