이 소설은 아주 잘 읽힌다. 쉬이 손에서 놓을 수 없다. 재미있지만 불편한 이야기의 덩어리들이다. 문장들이 나쁘지 않다. 과하게 좋다. 특히 프롤로그와 에필로그에 해당하는, <마라의 죽음>과 <사르다나팔의 죽음>을 설명하는 부분은 후일 교과서에 실릴만하다. 김영하는 영리한 작가다. 대중과 평단에서 동시에 좋은 평가를 이끌어 낸다. 이것이 가능한 것은, 그가 대중과 평단에게 보이는 면을 각기 다르게 설정하는 탁월한 작품 전략을 취했기 때문이다. 다시 말하자면 대중과 평단이 보는 부분을 각기 다르게 제시하면서도 각각에게서 호평을 이끌어 낸다. 그런 면에서 이 책은 입체적이다. 대중성과 작품성을 동시에 담보한다. 예를 들면 이 파탄 난 인생들의 스토리는 대중의 입맛에 딱 맞아 떨어진다. 소설의 위악적 설정으로 작용하는 자살 조력자라는 소재도 탁월하다. 자주 출몰하는 성적 묘사 역시 그런 역할을 한다. 대중의 흥미를 끄는 역할을 하면서 동시에 불편하게 만든다. 그리고 이러한 스토리 요소를 잘 버무리는 유려한 문장력은 말할 필요도 없다. 그러면서도 결코 평단의 기대 역시 져 버리지 않는다. 작가는 이 소설에서 특이한 아이러니를 설정한다. 그 아이러니는 잘 읽히는 문장과 불편한 서사를 통해 설정된다. 유려한 문체로 꼴 보기 싫은 이야기를 해댄다. 독자는 이 딜레마 사이에서 흔들거리다 책을 집어던지거나 혹은 숭배한다. 탁월한 문장력으로 형편없는 삶의 이야기를 나열하는 효과. 등장인물들의 삶은 지리멸렬하다. 이들의 삶은 실제감 없는 공허한 스토리인데 자꾸 읽힌다. 그래서 오히려 현실과 소설의 간극이 벌어진다. 이 소설은 결코 현실을 담아내려 하지 않는다. 그런데 그럼으로써 오히려 현실이 드러나게끔 한다. 이 스토리들은 현실에 기반을 두지만 결코 현실적이지 않다. 작가는 소설을 파탄 냄으로써 현실이 파탄 나는 지점을 드러내려 한다. 이른바 소설의 위악과 현실의 위선이 만나는 지점, 그 지점에서 작가는 삶을 찾는다. 대부분의 등장인물들은 이름이나 혹은 불리는 이름으로라도 불린다. 그러나 소설에서 이름조차 가지지 못하는 존재들이 있다. 그들이 단지 알파벳인 이유는 그들이 비소설적 인물이기 때문이다. 역설적으로 이들은 이 소설에서 가장 현실적 존재들이다. 작가는 이들을 알파벳으로 표현함으로써 소설과 현실의 거리두기를 꾀한다. 파탄 난 현실로서 C와 K. 그들은 죽지 않는다. 죽어야 하는 이 소설에서 그들은 살아남은 자들이다. 살아남은 자들은 ‘사람’으로 취급하지 않는다. 아도르노는 예술이 현실에 대한 위안을 담당해서는 안 된다고 말한다. 오히려 예술은 현실을 불편하게 느끼게 해야 한다는 것이다. 그 예술은 참 힘든 예술이다. 이미 충분히 힘든 현실을 더 불편하게 만드는 예술이라니. 그것이야말로 정말 스스로를 파괴하는 행위가 아닌가. 그래서 이 책의 제목은 충분히 중의적이다. 제목이 말하는 ‘파괴’가 자살, 영원한 종결로서 그것이라면 허무주의 외에 이 책을 지배할 만한 이론은 없다. 그러나 단지 허무주의라기에 팽팽한 무엇이 남아 있기에 그렇게 보이지 않는다. 그 ‘파괴’가 의미하는 것 중에 허무주의 말고 무언가가 남아 있을 것이다. 그것은 무엇일까? * 토비님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2019-02-01 15:46) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다 Warning: Use of undefined constant no - assumed 'no' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/bbsd/view.php on line 133 Warning: Use of undefined constant no - assumed 'no' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/bbsd/view.php on line 146 Warning: Use of undefined constant vote - assumed 'vote' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/redtea/html/a_skin/bbsd/view.php on line 161 11
