1950년대 일본은 한국전쟁이 불러온 엄청난 호황을 누리고 있었고 이런 호황 덕에 일본 영화계 역시 돈을 갈퀴로 긁어 모으고 있었습니다. 이런 상황에서 자존감이 차오른 일본 최대의 영화사 토에이의 사장은 '우리도 디즈니처럼 애니메이션 만들어 보자!' 라고 나서게 됩니다. 토애이 이전에도 일본 애니메이션이 없었던 건 아닙니다. 1940년대엔 전시 선전물 용도로 모모타로 캐릭터를 이용한 장편 극장용 애니메이션이 만들어지기도 했고요. 하지만 전후 혼란 속에 이런 저런 흐름은 다 끊겨 버렸고 그런 상황에서 애니메이션을 만든다는 건 말 그대로 맨땅에 헤딩하기나 마찬가치였죠. 한데 토에이는 애니메이션 제작 자회사 토에이동화를 만든 후 정말 맨땅에 헤딩하듯이 애니메이션을 만들기 시작합니다. 애니메이션 같은 건 만든 적도 없던 사람들을 파격적인 보수로 모으고 모인 사람들끼리 생각을 모으고 궁리하고 제작 도구까지 고안해 가며 애니메이션을 어떻게 만들 것인지 노하우를 쌓아 갔고, 동양의 디즈니가 되기 위해 동양의 고전인 요재지이의 이야기를 원작으로 삼아 애니메이션을 만들어 냅니다. 그렇게 만들어진 작품이 1958년에 나온 백사전. 디즈니처럼 초당 24장의 그림을 투입해 만들어낸 현대 일본애니메이션의 시작이 바로 이 작품입니다. 백사전 이후 토에이 동화는 계속해서 동양의 디즈니를 표방한 작품을 만들었습니다만 이런 작품들은 막대한 비용이 들아건 거에 비하면 수익을 내지 못했습니다. 정작 수익을 낸 작품들은 회사 내에서 b급으로 싸게 만든 - 백사전을 비롯한 a급 작품들이 초당 24장의 그림을 쓴 데 비해 저런 b급 작품들은 초당 8장의 그림이 기본으로 쓰였습니다. - 인기 만화 원작 애니메이션들이었죠. 결국 제작비 부담에 토에이 동화는 60년대 후반에 이르러 디즈니를 모토로 한 대작 작품들의 제작을 줄이려 했지만 이런 움직임은 노조 활동을 근간으로 한 회사 내 애니메이터들의 반발에 부딪쳤고, 이런 혼란 속에서 백사전의 꿈을 이은 애니메이터들은 자신들의 모든 걸 쏳는다는 마음으로 태양의 왕자 호루스의 대모험을 만들었습니다. 그리고 호루스는 쫄딱 망했죠. 태양의 왕자 호루스의 대모험 제작을 주도한 인물들은 하나 하나 토에이 애니메이션을 떠났고, 그렇게 토에이 황금시대는 끝이 납니다. 태양의 왕자 호루스의 대모험 이후 토에이 동화가 동양의 디즈니란 꿈을 아예 버린 건 아닙니다. 장화를 신은 고양이도 있고 백조 왕자 백조의 호수 지구로 같은 작품들은 토에이 동화 창립시절의 꿈을 이은 작품들이었고 한국에서도 방영한 고깔모자 삼총사도 따지고 보면 백사전의 꿈을 이은 작품이었죠. 하지만 분명 벡사전의 꿈은 점점 옅어져 갔죠. 호루스의 대모험 흥행 실패로 토에이를 떠난 사람들이 바로 타카하다 이사오와 미야자키 하야오를 비롯한 이들이었고, 이들은 니혼 애니메이션에서 만든 알프스 소녀 하이디와 빨강머리 앤 미래소녀 코난 같은 작품들로 백사전의 핏줄을 이어가다 마침내 스튜디오 지브리를 만듭니다. 그렇게 동양의 디즈니를 꿈꾼 백사전의 피가 이어진 겁니다. 백사전 이야기는 90년대에 홍콩 영화 즐겨본 분들에게는 익숙할 수도 있습니다. 서극 감독에 왕조현 장만옥이 주연한 청사가 바로 백사전 이야기입니다. * 토비님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2019-01-17 17:05) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다.
