조지 오웰의 책은 1984와 동물농장을 읽었습니다. 이 작가는 소설적 재미가 대단하다거나 글을 엄청 잘쓴다거나.. 그러니까 민음사 고전이나 열린책들 세계문학 시리즈에 나오는 이름들, 도스토예프스키나 발자크나 스콧피츠제럴드나 니코스 카잔차키스 등.. 그런 사람들과는 좀 느낌이 다릅니다. 조지 오웰이 살던 현실을 어떻게 소설로 승화시켰으며 그게 무척 매력적이면서도 서늘한 느낌을 준다는 것이 이 작가의 특징이 아닐까 합니다. 파리와 런던의 밑바닥 생활이라는 책은 우연히 어떤 분의 부탁을 들어드리며 구해 읽게 된 책입니다. 조지 오웰이 이런 책을 썼다는걸 이 기회에 알았죠. 이 책은 조지오웰의 작품인생에 있어서 그의 시선이 어떻게 구성되었을지를 추론해볼만한 책입니다. 이 책은 소설이지만 동시에 자전이며 자신이 겪은 빈곤과 빈곤 속의 인간과 빈곤속의 사회. 즉 빈곤한 곳에서 일어나는 '삶'에 대해 자세히 들여다보고 있게 합니다. 마치 심연을 바라보게 하듯이요. 이 시대의 빈곤과는 질적으로 다른 빈곤 속에서, 책에서는 어떠한 인간적인.. 문명화된 인간의 존엄을 찾기 어렵습니다. 때에 찌든 노동자들과 창부들의 이야기가 가득하고 소년 소녀의 소아 노동과 밀실의 성매매.. 폭력과 살인이 무척 가까움에도 벌레 낀 침대에 후추를 뿌려가며 잠들 수 있는 그런 곳을 이야기합니다. 가장 하층의 직업인 접시닦이와 칸막이 하나로 나뉘어진 레스토랑에서 식사가 가능한 손님의 세계는 무엇으로 단절되어 있는가.. 빈곤의 끝자락에서 작가는 계급을 체험하고, 모순을 체험하면서도, 부르주아의 낭만적인 마르크스주의나 공산주의와도 선을 긋습니다. 그에게 빈곤과 밑바닥에서 벌어지는 생의 투쟁은 그저 무척 자연스러우면서도 삶 그 자체인, 어떻게 보면 가식과 허영을 낼 수 없는 인간 끝자락의 인간성을 묘사합니다. 읽으면서 기분이 좋아질법한 책이라거나 막 너무 재밌어서 신이 날 책은 아니지만서도 빈곤이라는 것이 지니는 그 자체를 그려낸 책이라는 점에서 매력은 있습니다. 길지 않으므로 읽어도 나쁘지 않으리라 생각합니다. * Toby님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2018-10-17 10:51) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다.
