 후지산, 일본의 영산. 해발 3500미터가 넘는다는 활화산. 일년에 여름 두달만이 공식 등산 시즌이라는 산, 그 산은 필히 거칠고 뜨거우리라. 몸뚱아리가 지쳐 고요해지면 안에서부터 올라오는 소리가 있겠지. 그 소리를 들으러 가야겠다. 부서지고 싶다. 아니 살고 싶다. ... 흠흠 아이고 부끄러워라 그랬는데요. 그게요. 산이 생각보다 쉬웠어요(...) 자아성찰할 시간과 고통은 주지 않는다. 하 후지산 너란 산, 거칠어 보이지만 알고보면 귀여운 남자같은 녀석.  후지산에는 4개 코스가 있는데 제가 간 '후지노미야' 코스는 그 중 가장 높은 고도(2400m)에서 시작했습니다. 일행이 저보다 젊은 남자분들이라 혹시몰라 ‘짐이 되진 않게 할게요. 대신 전 제 페이스로 가겠다고’ 말해두었습니다. 코스도 제가 선택한 것은 아니였습니다. 저는 일부러 정보 없이 갔습니다. 그냥 산에 던져지고 싶었거든요. 다른 사람은 어떤지 모르겠어요. 저는 어렸을 때부터 산을 탈 때 어떤 감각이 있습니다. 그 감각을 기억해 두기 위해 씁니다. 정확히는 예전에는 제 방식이 뭔지 모르고 그냥 장금이처럼 “앞에 산이 있어서 올랐습니다.” 수준이었는데 이번엔 좀 알겠더라구요. 먼저 산을 들어서면 식생 분석이 시작됩니다. 근데 이 산은 분류하여 대뇌 DB에 업데이트 할 식물이 없어요. 그러니 오히려 올라가는데만 집중하면 되었어요. 제가 나무 공부 시작한 이후부터는 숲에 가면 '안녕'하며 나무랑 인사하느라 산책이 되지 산행은 안 되었어요. 산행보다 트래킹이 더 좋아요. 생생하게 숲에 안기는 느낌이지요. 근데 여긴 그런 거 없음. 운 좋게 그간 못 본 희귀 식물을 볼 수 있지 않을까 싶은 두근거림도 없음. 좋아 이번엔 그저 걷고 또 걸을 수 있겠어. 그럼 다음으로 땅을 보면, 처음엔 화산재와 자갈로 이뤄지고 그늘이 없는 산이 뭔가 싶었는데 몇 걸음 걷자 알겠더군요. 아 이 산은 모래와 자갈로 이루어진 사막이다.  (흙무더기처럼 보이지만 정식 등산로입니다.) 이제 저를 봅니다. 제 장점은 몸이 가볍다는 것입니다. 단점은 햇빛을 못견디고 체력이 약합니다. 한달 전에 열사병으로 쓰러졌고, 이주 전에도 잘 못 먹어 수액을 맞았죠. 연일 이글이글 끓고 있는 이 땡볕에서 그늘 없는 산을 올라야 한다. 그래서 최대한 햇빛을 가리는 도구를 가져왔습니다. 일명 양봉모자ㅋㅋㅋㅋ 그 날 후지산에서 넓은 챙과 앞 뒤 가림막을 갖춘 가장 훌륭한 도구였다고 감히 단언합니다. 그럼 환경과 수행주체에 대한 분석 결과, 산행 전략이 세워집니다. [최대한 미끄러지지 않으며 정상으로 선굵게 직진한다] 모래와 자갈로 이루어진 길은 발을 잘못 짚으면 발이 파이며 뒤로 미끄러졌어요. 바닷가 모래사장에서 걷기 힘든 거와 같지요. 하찮기 그지 없는 체력을 보존하며 올라가려면 최대한 미끄러지면 안되었어요. 전략이 세워지자 달성하기 위한 실행지침은 바로 나왔어요. << 실행지침 >> 1. 쉬지 않고 끝까지 간다. 이건 제가 혼자 산 탈 때 스타일인데 '강약중간약' 이런식으로 갑니다. '약'이면 서서 쉬거나 천천히 걷는거지 절대 배낭 내리고 엉덩이 붙이고 앉지는 않아요. 다시 일어날 때 오히려 힘들거든요. 이 산은 그늘이 없고 저는 햇빛 노출에 몹시 취약하고 챙겨야 할 일행이 없으니ㅇㅇ 오랜만에 예전 스타일로 진지하게 임하기로 했어요. '강'이랑 '중'을 최대한 길게 가야해요. '강'이랑 '중'을 하려면 앞에 사람이 줄 서서 가면 곤란하니 '약'을 하며 먼저 보내 한번에 오를 거리를 확보하든가, '강'이나 '중'을 하며 한번에 10명에서 20명 정도 제낍니다. 그 때는 실례한다거나 고맙다고 이야기를 해야죠. 내려오는 사람들이 제가 오르길 기다려 주거든요. 먼저 앞 서 갈 때는 스미마셍, 비켜주고 기다려주는 분들껜 아리가또 고자이마쓰~ [중요한 건 천천히 걷더라도 멈추지 않는 것] 2.단단한 돌을 밟을 기회는 놓치지 않는다. 돌이 아예 없진 않더군요. 그 돌을 가볍게 이어 밟으면 축지법을 쓰듯 씍씍 나갈 수 있어요. 제가 터벅터벅 걷는 흙산보다 돌산을 좋아하는 이유죠. 마치 고양이가 사뿐사뿐 거닐 듯. 어떤 선을 그리며 가볍게 나는 듯한 감각을 소환합니다. 환경은 제가 가본 산들과 완전 다르지만 본능적으로 발 디딜 수 있는 돌을 찾아 잇는다는 감각은 동일합니다. 제 몸에 익숙한 감각이 몇년만인데도 성공적으로 로딩되었습니다. 디딜 때 돌과의 신뢰도 중요해요. 일단 믿고 디딘다. 책임은 내가 감당한다. 내 다음 발이 디딜 돌을 고르는 건 본능적인 판단이죠. 가끔 크기는 크지만 휙하고 밀리는 가벼운 돌들도 있어요. 현무암들. 밀려서 균형을 잃지만 그런 작은 실패에 연연할 필요는 없어요. 아예 넘어지면 쉬어야 해요. 하지만 미끄러지고 균형을 잃은 정도는 나를 믿고 바로 다음 발이 앞으로 나가면 되는 거예요. 성공의 경험을 계속 쌓으면 실패의 비율은 확 낮아져 갑니다. 이걸 실패가 아니라 성공을 위한 시행착오 정도가 되게 만들어 버립니다. [딛을 때는 확실히 딛고 그 결과는 감수한다.] 3.먼저 간 사람의 이미 파인 발자국을 따라걷는다. 최대한 미끄러지지 않으려면 이미 앞 사람이 미끄러진 곳을 디디면 됩니다. 겨울 산행이랑 원리가 같죠. 모래에 희미하게 자국이 있어요. 이미 밀린 자리는 크게 밀리지 않아요. 자갈산은 처음이라서인지 2번 돌 밟기보다 시행착오가 많네요. 한번 자갈에 빠져 미끄러질 때마다 제 캐릭 머리 위로 피지컬 -5 씩 뜨는 이미지가 보여요. 아 이 때 알았어요. 제게 등산은 저를 굴려서 하는 게임인거죠. 산을 타고 싶었던 것은 아무 생각없이 밤새 게임을 하고 싶은 감각이었나 봐요. [먼저 간 사람이 남긴 유산을 활용한다]  (완전 초입 시작 단계입니다)  (그래도 식물이 좀 있는 아래쪽) << 올라가며>> 초반, 중반, 후반 시기별로도 다릅니다. 이 산은 독특해요. 목표가 계속 눈앞에 보여요. 나에게 오라고, 여기까지라고. 쉬지만 않으면 정상이 계속 커지며 다가와요. 초반엔 돌과 발자국만 보고 걷습니다. 한번도 그래 본 적 없긴한데 여기서부터 하늘보고 걸으면 제 기준으론 망한거예요. 오로지 중요한 건 내 발이 딛을 다음 자리죠. 그렇게 오르다 보면 어느 순간 벌써 여기까지 왔나 싶을 정도로 높이 올라와 있습니다. 후반에 체력이 확 떨어질 것을 알기에 스피드를 냅니다. 초반에 쭉쭉 나가줘야 재미있고 신나거든요. 어느 정도 절 달리게 해줘야 하는거죠.  중반부턴 속도가 조금 쳐지지만 위를 자주 볼 정도는 아니예요. 지그재그면 방향을 꺽기 전까진 한번에 가지요. 아니면 지그재그 하나는 빠르게 하나는 천천히 가는거죠. 초반엔 올라가는 것을 그저 즐겼다면 중반부터는 의지가 좀 필요합니다. 저 꺽어지는 길까지 가고 쉬겠다 -> 그 작은 목표에 다다르면 쉴 수 있는데도 조금만 더 가자라며 계속 감  후반엔 돌이 커지고 경사가 심해져 힘들었어요. 이 때쯤엔 선의의 라이벌이 필요해요. 제가 제낀 사람이 저를 앞서는 경우는 거의 없어요. 외로워지죠. 그렇기에 좋은 라이벌이 될 만한 분은 느낌이 와요. 마지막 구간에선 적게 쉬고 계속 나아가는 사람이 드물거든요. 그럼 그 사람이 쉬는데까지만 간다고 생각하고 가거나, 그 사람과의 거리가 벌어지지 않게 유지만 하며 갑니다. 웃긴건 대부분 그 사람도 절 느껴요. 제가 가면 서서 쉬다가 움직이기 시작하죠. 후지산 이전에 이런 산행은 15년 늦가을 월악산이었어요. 월악산은 흔들다리가 목표였기에, 정상찍고 흔들다리에서 오래 놀려고 빠르게 나아갈 수 있었죠. 광주에서 참석한 후배 결혼식 다음 날이라 배낭에는 원피스니 구두같은 쓸데없는 짐도 있었어요. 그런데 허리쌕만 맨 어떤 아저씨가 저처럼 쓱쓱 소리가 날 거처럼 나아가더군요. 그 분이 딛는 자리는 제가 고를 법한 거라 쳐지지 않고 일미터 정도 바로 뒤에서 그냥 따라 올라가면 되었지요. 운이 좋았죠. 쇼트트랙에서 그러하듯 아낀 체력으로 정상 30분 전 마지막 구간쯤 추월했지요. 정상에서 만난 그 분이 “아가씨가 산을 잘 타네”라고 말을 걸어와 “네 좋아해요" 라고 이야기 나눴어요. 그 분은 약초채집이 취미라 매주 산을 탄다더군요. 그 때는 서울과 영암의 거리가 안타까웠어요. 이런 친구가 있음 매주는 아니더라도 세달에 한번은 탈텐데. 후지산에선 삿갓을 쓴 할아버지가 있었어요. 요~ 삿갓맨. 그 분과의 거리차는 3미터. 앞서거니 뒷서거니 했어요. 그러다가 점점 쉬는 간격이 길어지더니 라이벌전은 끝났어요.  (쉬고 있는 등산객에게 사진을 찍어달라고 했을 땐 저 분이 찍힌지 몰랐어요. 양봉모자와 삿갓) 그 뒤엔 참 하늘 많이 봤네요. 한 발짝 가고 올려 보고, 다음 발 딛고 또 보고. 내가 저 선을 너머 분화구를 보고야 만다. 이쯤되면 힘든데 힘든게 중요하지 않아요. 알거든요. 결국 나는 저기에 갈 거라는 걸. 밤이 되면 달이 뜨듯, 나는 조금씩 움직여서라도 저기에 가겠죠. 그 때 시간 감각이 살짝 이상해져요. 마치 자명한 미래가 현재와 동시에 존재하는 것 같아요. << 호흡 >> 산을 탈 땐 호흡이 흐트러지면 안돼요. 위에 '강약중간약'에서 '강', '중' 으로 가면 숨이 찹니다. 내 숨소리가 스스로에게 들릴 정도면 거슬려요. '약'을 해서 가라앉혀야 해요. 고양이처럼 우아하게 나비가 날듯 가야지 멍멍이처럼 헥헥대고 싶진 않아요. (실은 고양이도 놀고 나면 헥헥대지만 이건 이미지 트레이닝이니까) 어디까지나 고요하게- 선과 선을 잇는 느낌으로.  (숨 고르기를 하며 본 풍경) 짠 이렇게 분화구 앞 산사에 옵니다. 분화구를 따라 걷습니다. 이게 후지산이구나... 이 모습을 보고 싶었어요. 분화구. 활화산의 커다란 분화구요. 후지산의 분화구는 몹시 뜨거워 보였습니다.   (분화구에서 이 정도 사진은 찍어줘야죠. 그렇지만 부끄럽네요ㅋㅋ 삭제해야하나ㅋㅋㅋ) 근데 맞은편에 어 저 무슨 센터같은게 있는 봉오리가 높네? 네 아무 정보 없이 온 전 최고봉이 무엇인지 몰랐죠. 분화구를 따라 돌다가 맞은편 분화구 봉오리로 향합니다. 자동 기상관측소가 있는 그 봉이 정상 맞습니다. 와 3776미터라니. 태어나서 가장 높은 높이입니다.  (완벽 양봉모자와 일본 최고봉) 분화구까지는 2시간 30분이 걸렸습니다.다 온줄 알고 분화구를 따라 돌다가 제일 높은 봉우리까지는 추가로 20분이 더 걸렸습니다. 후지노미야 코스는 보통 5시간에서 5시간 30분이 걸린다고 하니 퍽 빠르게 올랐네요. 시간은 큰 의미가 없습니다. 중요한 것은 상황과 내게 맞는 전략을 세우고, 그게 얼마나 맞는 것인가지요. 저는 늘 제가 아무 생각없이 오른다 생각했는데, 아니 그런 적 없더라구요. 언제나 그 산과 내게 맞는 최선의 방법을 직관적으로 찾아냈었죠. 일상에서 가끔 그 감각이 생생하게 필요할 때가 있어요. '힘든데 한 발자국이라도 더 가려는 그 감각'이요. 오르면서 깨달았어요. 이 더위에 혹사당할게 뻔한데 후지산에 가야겠다고 결단을 내렸던 이유, 이 감각을 느끼고 싶었구나. 지금 제가 있는 곳에서는 이게 서핑이라면 능숙하게 파도 타는 법을 모릅니다. 균형을 잡지 못하고 번번히 뒤집히고 물에 빠져 흐름에 올라타 즐기지 못하고 있어요. 그래도 예전엔 아예 서지도 못했다면 이젠 흔들거리는 다리로 설 수는 있는 거 같아요. 그래서 왔나봐요. 산에...답답해서. 빨리 올라왔으니 정상을 오래 즐깁니다. 일행을 기다리며 간식을 먹고 미쿡에서 온 분, 일본 분, 한국분과 이야기를 나누고 사진을 찍습니다. 누구나 산에 오면 인싸가 되는거죠. 즐거운 시간을 보내고, 추워서 가방에 챙겨온 가을용 바람막이로 갈아입고 누워서 쉬고 나서도 일행은 오지 않습니다. 제 예상과 어긋나게 일행들은 시간이 훨씬 더 걸렸습니다.  (정상의 손바닥만한 작은 그늘에 진짜 누워있었음. 누우면 하늘도 볼 수 있고 좋은데 조신한 친구들은 제발 아무데서나 눕지 말라구) 결과적으로 저는 정상에서만 2시간을 있었고 내려갈 때쯤 고산병 증세가 나타났습니다. 머리가 아프더군요. 평상 시 두통이 없어서인지 고산병으로 머리가 아픈 느낌은...음 다시는 겪고 싶진 않더군요... 후지산에 가실 분들은 고산병도 고려를 하셔야 할 것 같습니다. 한 때 푸른 기와집에서 사재기했다는 고산병에 좋다는 약이라든지(...) 저는 휴대용 산소호흡기 정도는 챙길 것 같습니다. 올라갈 때는 산행의 느낌을 느끼려 제 페이스대로 갔지만 내려올 때는 일행들과 어울려 왔습니다. 이런 자갈산이 처음이라 몰랐는데 내려올 때가 훨씬 편하더군요. 마치 스키를 타듯 미끄러지면 되었습니다. 오른쪽 왼쪽 몸을 살짝살짝 틀면서 쓰윽쓰윽 모래 먼지를 날리며 내려오는게 제법 재미졌습니다. 하지만 산장에서 오래 쉬지는 못하겠더라구요. 쉬면 체온이 확 식으며 떨어지는게 느껴지는데 그럼 저는 위험해서요. 그래서 늘 보온병을 지니고 다니는데 이번 여행에선 아예 챙겨오지도 않았지요. (집나간 보온병...흑) 일행은 어떤 부분은 참 먼치킨 같은데 어떤 부분은 참 허술하다고 저를 평하더군요. 저도 제 안의 극과 극 같은 부분을 느껴요. 그게 조화로운지는 모르겠지만 그 자체가 저인 것은 느껴요. 내려올 땐 올라오는 사람들에게 먼저 인사를 건넵니다. '곤니찌와' '간바레' '화이팅' 아까 산을 오를 때 사람들이 건넨 말들을 다시 돌려줍니다. 이제 알 거 같아요. 산행하기 만만치 않은 후반부에 대한 안쓰러움과 그래도 힘내서 무사히 산행을 마쳤으면 하는 마음을 전합니다. 저는 정상에서 만세를 외치지 않았습니다. 아직 끝나지 않았거든요. 이제 목표는 다치지 않고 무사히 내려가는 것. 주차장에 와서야 아까 일본분들이 외친 "야따~!"를 말했습니다.  (자판기에 그려진 후지산 모에화 캐릭터~ 뭔말인지 모름. 포카리 스웨트 가격은 도시에선 130, 산 초입에선 250, 마지막 산장에선 500엔입니다.) 하루 전에 결정하고 비행기 티켓을 샀던거라...준비는 여러모로 미흡했지만 그래서 더 생생하기도 했습니다. 후지산이면 일본 매체 속에 나오는 환상의 산 같은 느낌이었는데 직접 가서 몸으로 만지고 느껴본 것이 좋았습니다. 제 안에 '내가 아는 나름대로의 후지산'이 생긴 것이지요. 역시 저는 그런게 좋아요. 제가 직접 내 손으로 내 몸으로 생생하게 느끼는 거. 눈을 가만히 감고 바람을 느낍니다. 그 장소에 가야지만 느낄 수 있는 바람이 있어요. 더 멀리, 더 높이 올라가 더 넓게 날고 싶어요. 그렇게 예전에 본 적 없는 풍경을 보고 싶고, 닿고 싶습니다. * 수박이님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2018-08-06 08:40) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다.
