오승환이 삼성에 있던 시절(2013년인가로 기억합니다) 한때 삼성 팬들은 응원 팀의 구원투수들을 '세이브 조작단'이라고 불렀습니다. 무슨 뜻인고 하니 오승환이 세이브를 올릴 수 있도록 하기 위해 큰 점수차가 벌어지는 상황을 세이브가 가능한 3점 혹은 그 미만의 접전으로 만든다는 말이었죠. 네... 흔히들 '회계분식한다' '불지른다'고 하는 표현을 점잖게, 그리고 '선의가 깃든 것처럼' 비꼬아 말한 것이었습니다. 해학적인 느낌이 강한 말이지만 직접 저 별명을 짓고 부른 당사자들의 속맘은 오죽했겠습니까(...)  [이런 좋은 의미의 조작단이 아닙니다.] 오늘 설명하려는 스탯은 이런 세이브조작단, 아니 구식으로 표현하면 '방화범' 투수들이 누군지 판별하는데 유용하게 쓰일 수 있습니다. Win Probability Added, 약칭 WPA라고 하는 스탯입니다. 구원 투수의 성적, 어떻게 봐야하나 투수를 평가하는 지표로 가장 널리 쓰이는 건 무엇일까요? 먼저 승/패를 생각해볼 수 있습니다. 선발 투수가 20승을 했다고 하면 보통은 '잘하는 투수구나'라고 생각하기 쉽고 대개는 이 생각이 맞습니다. 하지만 투수의 승패는 아무래도 운빨을 심하게 타기 마련입니다. 삼진 210개를 잡고도 10승을 못한 허접... 아니 불운했던 2012년의 류현진을 기억하시는지? 내가 아무리 9이닝을 1점으로 틀어막아도 우리 팀이 한 점도 못내면 나는 패전투수가 됩니다. 이런 점을 보완하기 위해, 투수 1인의 성적에 오롯이 집중하고자 쓰이는 것이 평균자책점(ERA, Earned Run Average)입니다. [ERA = 자책점/이닝 * 9] [9회까지 던졌다고 쳤을 때 평균적으로 내주는 점수] 이게 평균자책점의 의미입니다(엄밀히 말해 '점수'가 아니라 '자책점'이지만). 이 ERA는 투수의 성적을 평가하는데 [가장 쉽고 편한 지표]로 자리매김했습니다. 하지만 이 ERA의 단점 역시 많습니다. 그 중 하나는 [이닝 표본이 적으면 왜곡되기 쉽다]는 점입니다. 한 예로 여기 10이닝 1실점을 기록 중인 한 투수가 있습니다. 지금 ERA는 0.9입니다. 그러나 여기서 실수로 만루홈런 한 방을 내준다면? 순식간에 ERA는 0.9에서 3.6으로 훌쩍 뛰어오릅니다. 만약 이 투수가 ERA는 똑같이 0.9인데 이닝 누적이 100이었다면 어땠을까요? 100이닝 10실점에서 100이닝 14실점으로 올랐으니 ERA는 0.9에서 1.26으로 올라갔습니다. 이처럼 이닝 수가 적으면 ERA의 변동량은 극심해집니다. 적은 이닝을 던지는 구원 투수일수록 한 순간의 실수가 크나큰 아픔으로 다가오기 쉽습니다. 또 하나, 뒤 투수가 방화했을 때도 ERA는 치솟습니다. ERA가 '자책점', 즉 자기가 내보낸(책임져야할) 주자의 득점까지 계산에 넣기 때문입니다. 주자 3명을 남기고 내려왔는데 다음 투수가 모두 싹쓸이 당하면 저놈... 아니 그 투수가 아니고 내 ERA가 올라갑니다. 반대로 재수가 좋으면 계속 주자를 내보내도 ERA는 안 올라갑니다. 때문에 ERA를 잘 관리하려면 운빨도 좋아야 됩니다. 문제는 구원 투수들의 보직 특성상, 특히 투수들의 보직 세분화가 일어나고 있는 현대 야구에선, 이렇게 재수가 없어서 ERA가 올라가는 상황들이 깨나 있다는 점입니다. 그래서 WPA가 뭐냐 다시 약자부터 소개하면 WPA = Win Probability Added입니다. 여기까지 좀 길었으니 핵심부터 요약하겠습니다. [WPA = 니가 지금까지 팀의 승리 확률에 보태준 걸 다 합한 값.] 대충 감이 오시나요? 아마 [승리 확률]에서 턱하니 걸리시는 분들이 많을 겁니다. 이게 뭐냐면... ● 승리 확률은 '특정 상황'에서 '팀이 경기에 승리할 확률'을 뜻합니다. 팀의 전력 편차, 순위 등과는 상관 없습니다. ● 경기 시작시 양 팀의 승리 확률은 50%로 동등합니다. 경기가 끝났을 때 승리 팀은 100%, 패배 팀은 0%를 가집니다. ● 승리 확률은 '역사적으로 봤을 때, 해당 상황에서 홈/어웨이 팀의 승리 확률(=경우의 수)은 얼마였는가?'라는 식으로 계산합니다. (물론 mlb 기준) ● 예를 들어서 9회말 2사 9점차로 홈팀이 앞설 때는 여태까지 100번 중에 99번을 이겼더라 -> 승리확률은 99%가 됩니다. 이 승리 확률을 기반으로 WPA 계산이 가능합니다. 한 선수가 타석이나 마운드에 들어섰을 때, 그리고 타석/마운드에서 내려왔을 때 그 결과에 따라서 승리 확률이 변해있을 겁니다. 이 확률 변화를 더해주면 그게 WPA가 됩니다. 경기마다 WPA는 쌓이고, 더해지고, 줄어들고, ... 그게 시즌 끝까지 가서 누적됩니다. 다시 예시를 들어볼까요? 9회말 3점차에 오승환이 등판했습니다. 이 때 오승환 팀의 승리 확률이 [95%]였다고 해봅시다. 근데 오승환이 끝내기 홈런을 맞았습니다. 그럼? 승리 확률은 [0%]가 됩니다. 순식간에 95%를 까먹었네요? 이러면 오승환의 WPA는 95%, 숫자로 0.95가 까입니다. 이렇게 10경기를 반복해서 누적하면 -9.5가 되는 것이지요. 여기까지 읽으셨다면 WPA의 장점이 쉽게 눈에 들어오실 겁니다. 바로 '상황에 따른 기여도'를 측정하기 편하다는 겁니다. ERA나 요새 많이 쓰이는 WAR는 이런 상황에 따른 중요성을 반영하지 않습니다. 9회말 3점차에 날린 끝내기 만루홈런이나, 5회초 10점차로 이기고 있을 때 날린 만루홈런이나 똑같이 취급한다는 것이죠. 이런 상황별 분석이 필요 없을 때도 있지만, 구원투수들의 경우 [사태의 심각성]과 뗄래야 뗄 수 없는 보직인지라 WPA를 유심히 들여다보면 그 투수의 고과가 보입니다. 예를 들어봅시다 - 2013년 다저스 '로널드 벨리사리오' 류현진의 미국 진출 첫 해에 많은 분들의 속을 타게 한 그 이름, 벨리사리오입니다. 먼저 ERA를 볼까요? 3.97입니다. 괜찮네 말은 나오기 힘들지만, 평타는 쳐준다고 할 수도 있겠습니다. 그냥 꾸역꾸역 자기 할일을 다 하면 이 정도는 해줄수 있어요. 근데 WPA를 보면 상황이 달라집니다. -1.14인데... 그러니까 [무려 114%를 날린 셈입니다!] 이게 와닿지 않는다고요? 같은 해 철벽 마무리 켄리 잰슨이 올린 WPA가 +3.54입니다. 둘이 벌써 4.68이나 차이가 납니다. 게다가 팀내 순위로 따지면 뒤에서 3등... 이 해 벨리사리오는 오른손에 흑염룡을 키웠습니다. 정말입니다.  [오른손의 흑염룡을 봉인 중인 벨리사리오] 예를 들어봅시다 - 2014년 다저스 '브랜든 리그' 또 다저스라서 죄송합니다(...). KBO리그 투수들로 예시를 들면 좋겠지만, 아직 KBO리그의 승리 확률 데이터는 계산된 적이 없어서 ㅠㅠ WPA 계산이 불가능합니다. 각설하고 브랜든 리그! 작년 ERA는 2.57입니다. 어라? 엄청 좋잖아? ...이렇게 생각하셨겠지만 이 친구도 WPA가 -0.43입니다. 2013년 벨리사리오보다는 낫네요... 그래도 여전히 마이너스. 등판할 때마다 팀 승리에 보탬이 될 때보다 손해를 끼칠 때가 더 많았다는 뜻입니다. 게다가 WPA는 마이너스인데 ERA는 이만큼 낮다는 건 더 나쁜 놈입니다. 왜냐면 1) 주자가 쌓였을 때 올라가서 다 들여보내주고 자기 주자는 다 막았다. 2) 중요할 때는 불지르고, 별로 중요하지 않을 때는 스탯 관리에 충실했다. 위 두 가지 상황 중 하나에 해당하기 때문입니다. 차근차근 다시 읽어보세요. 진짜 천하의 몹쓸 놈 아닙니까? 그걸 알았는지 다저스도 뜸들이다가 올해 결국 리그를 방출시켰습니다. 사요나라...  [뭐 그래도 열심히 던지긴 했다만...] WPA의 단점은? 모든 스탯이 그렇듯 WPA도 문제점이 없는 스탯은 아닙니다. 하나씩 살펴보겠습니다. 1) 뽀록으로 플러스 누적이 가능하다 투수의 경우 WPA는 어디까지나 등판 전후에 따른 승리확률을 토대로 계산이 됩니다. 이 말인즉슨, 과정이 어떻든 결과만 좋으면 된다는 겁니다. 때문에 볼볼볼 볼질만 하다가 뽀록으로 아웃만 잡으면 WPA는 플러스가 됩니다. 게다가 상황만 따라주면 한 경기만 나갔는데도 60경기 나간 친구보다 좋을 수도 있어요! 2) 미래 상황에 대한 예측력이 떨어진다 위 1)과 일맥상통하는 부분입니다. 어디까지나 상황과 결과 중심의 스탯이기 때문에, 미래에도 좋은 결과가 나온다는 보장이 없습니다. 오늘 계탔다고 내일도 계타는거 아니잖아요? 반면 상황을 배제하는 스탯인 WAR나 FIP는 상대적으로 미래 성적에 대한 예측력이 더 나은 편입니다. 3) 한번 크게 털리면 망할 수도 있다 시즌 중에 60경기를 패전조로 나간 A라는 투수가 있다고 칩시다. 워낙 상황이 무난할때만 나가서 그런지 승리 확률에 보탬이 된 적은 별로 없습니다. 그래서 WPA도 +긴 한데 1이 안되는 수치입니다. 그러다 갑자기 9점차로 이기는 경기에 마무리로 나갔다가 역전을 당한다면? 굉장히 극단적인 예시긴 하지만 현실이 된다면 지금까지 야금야금 모아온 WPA가 한순간에 날아갈 수도 있습니다. ERA도 비슷한 문제가 있는데 WPA도 완전히 피해갈 수는 없는 문제입니다. 4) 수비로 인한 기여도를 고려하지 않는다 지금까지 계속 타석/마운드에 올라갔다 내려왔을 때 승리 확률에만 주목한 거, 눈치 채셨나요? 사실 투수의 호투에는 야수들의 좋은 수비가 한몫할 때도 많습니다. 그러나 WPA는 호수비로 아웃카운트가 늘어나도 그 승리 확률이 온전히 투수의 것이 됩니다. 현대 야구에서 수비의 중요성은 점점 늘어나고 있는데, WPA는 이 수비로 인한 기여도를 전혀 캐치하지 못하고 있습니다.
