프로 스포츠를 이해하기 위해서는 스포츠 내의 매커니즘을 이해하는 것도 중요하지만, 외적인 제도와 수익모델을 이해하는 것도 중요합니다. 왜냐하면 프로 선수들은 스포츠 내에서는 어느 수준 이상의 실력을 갖고 있기 때문에, <선수>의 강력함에서는 평균적으로 큰 차이가 나지 않지만, <구단>의 강력함은 제도와 수익모델을 얼마나 잘 이용하느냐에 달려 있기 때문입니다. 1. 반反 자본주의 제도들 : 수익균등배분, 샐러리 캡(Salary Cap), 드래프트(Draft) 흔히 미국은 자본주의의 총본산으로 일컬어지지만, 스포츠에 한정해서라면 빨갱이 나라라고 해도 무방합니다. 영연방을 중심으로 발달한 크리켓, 럭비, 한미일을 중심으로 팬이 형성된 야구 같은 경쟁자들이 있겠지만, 전 세계에서 가장 대중적인 스포츠는 축구라고 할 수 있습니다. 모든 국가가 이해할 수 있는 간단한 규칙을 갖고 있죠. 하지만 세계 최대 스포츠 시장 미국의 4대 스포츠 리그에 축구는 없습니다. 그러나 미국의 4대 스포츠 시장 규모는 EPL을 제외한 어떤 축구 리그보다도 큽니다.  이런 성장에는 단순히 부유한 국가뿐만 아니라, 미국 스포츠 특유의 반反 자본주의적 정서가 한몫했습니다. NFL 커미셔너로서 29년동안 재임했던 피트 로젤의 사례는 이를 명확하게 보여줍니다. 그는 스포츠는 본질적으로 엔터테인먼트고, 만약 경쟁이 없다면 시장은 성장할 수 없음을 정확하게 인식했습니다. 단순히 강한 팀이 약한 팀을 때려부수는 경기를 보려고 사람들이 돈을 내려고 하지 않을 거라는 것이었죠. 그는 62년 전 구단주를 설득시켜 모든 중계권료를 빅 마켓 팀이든, 스몰 마켓 팀이든 동등하게 나눠서 배분하는 종류의 계약을 성공시킵니다. 그는 모든 구단에게 동일한 수익을 보장해야 팀 전력이 평준화될 것이며, 전력이 평준화되어야 사람들이 더 많이 볼 것이라고 믿었으며, 그의 믿음은 성공으로 보답받았습니다. 62년 각 구단이 받은 중계권료는 33만 달러에 불과하였으나, 현재 각 구단이 받는 중계권료는 1억 5천만 불이 넘습니다. 중계권료 뿐만이 아닙니다. 광고료, 로고판매 수익 등은 여전히 모든 구단이 동일한 금액을 가져가며, 심지어는 구단 수입마저 40%는 동등하게 배분하고 있습니다. 이런 NFL의 반 자본주의적 컨셉의 제도는 두 가지가 더 있습니다. 하나는 샐러리 캡(Salary Cap)이고, 두번째는 드래프트(Draft)입니다. 첫째로 샐러리 캡은 팀 연봉 총액 상한제도입니다. 이는 구단이 보유한 선수들의 연봉 총액이 일정 값 이상을 넘어서지 못하도록 한 제도입니다. 이는 자금력이 우월한 구단이 선수 쇼핑을 통하여 지나치게 강해지는 것을 막기 위한 것입니다. 한편 샐러리 캡은 예외를 허용하느냐 허용하지 않느냐에 따라 소프트 캡과 하드 캡으로 나뉩니다. MLB, NBA 역시 샐러리 캡 제도를 갖고 있으나, MLB는 사치세(luxury tax), NBA는 사치세 뿐만 아니라 버드 룰 등의 다양한 예외규정을 통해 샐러리 캡을 넘어설 수 있는 케이스들을 갖고 있습니다. 하지만 NFL과 NHL에서는 예외규정이 없는 하드 캡(hard cap) 시스템을 갖고 있습니다. 하드 캡 시스템 하에서는 충분히 좋은 선수임에도 비용이 많이 든다 싶으면 가차없이 토사구팽하는 경우가 흔합니다. 한편, 이런 종류의 무임승차자(free rider)를 가정할 수도 있습니다. 일부러 선수 영입에 들이는 비용을 줄임으로써, 중계권료에 의한 수익은 그대로 가져가고, 반대로 들어가는 비용은 줄임으로써 계속해서 시장과 리그의 무임승차자로 지속적인 이득을 취하는 경우입니다. 구단주가 성적이 아니라 수익에 관심이 많다면 충분히 벌어질 수 있는 현상이죠. 그런 현상을 방지하기 위해 샐러리 캡에서는 팀 전체 연봉의 하한선을 정해 놓는 것이 일반적입니다. 그래도 대부분의 샐러리 캡의 방점은 약팀이 아니라 강팀에게 집중되어 있습니다. 샐러리 캡을 목표를 한 마디로 표현하자면 이렇게 표현할 수 있을 것 같습니다. 리그에서 강팀은 생겨날 수 있습니다. 하지만 지속되어선 안됩니다. 반대로, 지속적인 약팀이 존재하지 않도록 하는 제도가 드래프트(draft)입니다. 드래프트는 징병을 뜻하는 말로, 프로 리그에 진입하고 싶어하는 선수들을 한데 모아 구단이 돌아가며 선수를 뽑는 제도입니다. 드래프트 제도를 잘 생각해 보면, 구단과 선수 사이의 계약에서 구단이 일방적인 갑의 위치에 서게 되는 제도라는 점을 알 수 있습니다. 선수는 자기가 가고 싶은 팀을 선택할 수 없지만, 구단은 원하는 선수를 뽑을 수 있으니까요. 어떤 의미에서는 자유시장경제를 무시하는 제도일 수 있습니다. 하지만 드래프트 없이 신인들은 누구나 자신들이 원하는 강팀에 가고 싶어하거나, 노출이 많이 되는 빅 마켓에만 가려고 할 것입니다. 그렇다면 강팀은 더더욱 강팀이 되고, 빅 마켓은 계속 빅 마켓일 것입니다. 하지만 드래프트 제도 하에서 약팀들은 누구나 탐내는 유망주들과 계약할 수 있는 기회를 가짐으로써 다시 강팀이 될 수 있는 기회를 쥐게 됩니다. 또한 드래프트 제도 하에 구단은 우수한 선수들을 싼 금액으로 계약할 수 있습니다. FA는 이러한 드래프트의 반대급부로 주어진다고 생각할 수 있습니다. 레반도프스키 같은 몇몇 희귀한 케이스를 제외하고는 축구 선수들은 보통 바이아웃이나 이적료를 통해 이적하게 됩니다. 하지만 드래프트 제도 하에서 FA는 필수적입니다. 의무적인 몇 년의 계약을 선수가 수행했을 때, 선수에게도 구단을 선택할 기회, 그리고 더 많은 연봉을 따낼 수 있는 기회를 줘야 하니까요. 일반적으로 드래프트는 역逆 드래프트 방식입니다. 즉, 저번 시즌에서 가장 낮은 순위대로 선수를 지명할 권리를 받게 됩니다. 그런데 만약 generation talent, 즉 동년배 뿐만 아니라 동 세대에 타의 추종을 불허하는 뛰어난 유망주가 있다고 한다면, 이번 시즌에 신통치 않은 성적표를 받아든 팀들은 차라리 이번 시즌을 버리고 다음 시즌에 그 유망주를 뽑겠다는 생각을 하게 됩니다. 혹은 검증된 FA를 비싼 돈 주고 영입하느니, 좋은 유망주들을 염가에 계약함으로써 유동성을 만들겠다는 생각을 할 수도 있습니다. 따라서 이런 팀들은 시즌이 중반도 채 넘기지 않은 상태에서 고의 패배, 혹은 미필적 고의 패배를 일삼게 되는 일들이 벌어지는데 이를 탱킹(tanking)이라고 합니다. MLB에서는 스티븐 스트라스버그와 브라이스 하퍼를 두고 이런 일이 벌어졌었고, NBA에서는 르브론 제임스가 가장 대표적이었습니다. 하지만 이런 팀들이 많아진다면 자연스럽게 리그 전체의 경쟁은 상대적으로 떨어질 수밖에 없습니다. 그래서 NBA는 드래프트에서 무조건 최하위가 1지명권을 가져가는 방식이 아닌, 최하위 순으로 1지명의 확률을 높게 주는 로터리 픽(lottery pick) 방식을 가져가곤 합니다. 최근에는 필라델피아 세븐티식서스의 샘 힝키가 고의 탱킹으로 악명을 떨쳤고, 필라델피아의 성공 이후 멤피스 그리즐리스나 피닉스 선즈 같은 팀들이 이를 본받고 있습니다. 이러한 샐러리캡과 드래프트 제도가 있다면 강팀은 지속하기 어렵습니다. 약팀들은 계속해서 드래프트를 통해 올라오려고 하고, 강팀은 샐러리 캡 때문에 좋은 선수들 중 몇몇은 놓아주어야 하니까요. UFC나 WWE 등에서는 PPV를 끌어들이기 위해 메인 이벤트/미드 카드/로우 카드 등을 배치하여 더 재미있게 즐길 수 있도록 하고, 한 경기마다 스토리를 만들기도 합니다. 또한, 선수의 실력 외에 구매력이라는 요소가 주요 변수로 등장합니다. 든든한 인종적/민족적 베이스를 갖고 있거나, 대중을 매료시킬 수 있는 기믹을 갖고 있는 선수들은 언제나 매치매이킹(match making)에서 갑의 위치를 차지합니다. 흔히 뛰어난 챔피언으로 간주되는 게나디 골로프킨이 그 실력에도 불구하고 언제나 을일 수밖에 없는 것은 바로 이 구매력이 떨어지기 때문이죠. 선수들을 이해하기 위해서는 그들이 어떤 구매력을 갖고 있는지 이해하는 것도 필요합니다. 현대 PPV 시장에서 가장 구매력이 뛰어났던 선수들을 살펴보면, -플로이드 메이웨더 : 무패 기믹, 돈자랑 기믹, 어그로, urban base -마이크 타이슨 : bad ass 기믹, 고의적인 폭력적인 스타일, 헤비급 -오스카 델 라 호야 : 여성층에게까지 어필하는 수려한 외모, 히스패닉과 영어 양쪽에 능통한 바이링구얼, 화끈한 경기와 연타 -코너 맥그리거 : 아일랜드 내셔널리즘, 어그로, 트래쉬 토커 -매니 파퀴아오 : 필리피노 인베이젼, 화끈한 경기와 연타 등이 떠오르는군요. 내셔널리즘은 가장 흔한 소재입니다. 백인이었던 토니 모리슨, 진 터니, 이탈리안 록키 마르시아노, 아투로 가티, 브리티쉬 리키 해튼, 나심 하메드, 푸에르토 리칸 미겔 코토 등이 PPV 스타는 아니었지만 언제나 든든한 지지를 업고 선수생활 말년까지 큰 돈을 벌어들일 수 있었습니다. 문제는 이런 PPV 방식에서, 실력과 상관없이 구매력만 갖고 매치매이킹을 하다 보면 스포츠 전체의 경쟁과 활력은 크게 떨어진다는 것입니다. 메이웨더-파퀴아오 이후 그들을 대체할 PPV 스타가 등장하지 않는 것도 비슷한 맥락이라 볼 수 있겠습니다. 개인적으로는 중국에서 걸출한 인재가 나온다면 시장을 바꿔놓을 충격파가 되지 않을까 하는 생각이 있습니다. 그러나 이런 구매력이 실력을 앞서는 구도는 타파되지 않을 공산이 큽니다. 3. 한국에서는... 한국에서 스포츠는 많은 사람들의 대중적인 취미입니다. 그래서인지 한국인의 특징들은 이곳에도 고스란히 반영되어 있습니다. 그것은 모방입니다. 한국은 그동안 리버스 엔지니어링으로 빠른 성과를 거두는 데 익숙했죠. 한국은 별다른 고민 없이 그 제도를 수입하는 데 급급했습니다. 하지만 스포츠를 어떤 커다란 시장으로 보는 것 같지는 않습니다. KBO는 수익 모델로 말하자면 모기업에 기생하는 형태에 불과합니다. 수익 모델이라는 것도 판공비를 크게 쳐 줬을 때 가능한 것 뿐입니다. 드래프트는 팀간 밸런스를 위해 실시하는 것이지만 1차지명을 폐지하고 전면 드래프트를 실시하자 구단이 지역야구에 투자하는 지원금 자체가 크게 감소했죠. 결국 1차지명을 다시 부활시키긴 하였으나 서울권 팜을 쥐고 있는 구단이 지속적으로 유리하다는 사실은 밸런스 패치에 도움이 되지 않죠. 샐러리 캡은 없으며, FA에 지르는 돈은 소위 '회장님의 의중'에 따라 결정되니 삼성의 투자 축소와 한화의 전면적인 투자도 그 일환으로 볼 수 있습니다. 그러면서 MLB와 자금경쟁은 되지 않아 최상위권 선수들은 MLB로 진출하게 되었고, 최상위권 선수가 아닌 준수한 FA에게 기존의 최상위권 선수가 받을 돈들을 지불하게 되어 소위 <오버페이> 논쟁이 있기도 했습니다. 하지만 기본적으로 자생이 불가능한 재벌들의 펫 스포츠, MLB와 자금경쟁이 불가능한 KBO의 예산 구조를 고려해 볼 때 준척급의 선수가 훨씬 많은 돈을 받게 되는 건 자연스러운 귀결입니다. K-리그는 제가 잘 알지는 못하나 재벌 대신 지방자치단체나 공공기관들의 수익을 통해 유지되고 있다고 알고 있습니다. 또한 드래프트 이전부터 해외로 진출하는 경우가 많은 만큼, 금액에서 오버페이가 발생하지는 않는 것 같습니다. 문제는 시청률 같은 시장의 수치가 딱히 나아지는 것처럼 보이진 않는다는 거죠. 축구가 관심을 받을 때는 오로지 국가대표 대항전 뿐이니까요. 승부조작이나 심판매수 스캔들의 존재도 있구요. KBL은 간단합니다. 농구는 타 리그에 진출할 실력이 되지 않습니다. 따라서 용병과 드래프트가 모든 걸 좌우하고 있습니다. 샐러리 캡이 있긴 하나 거의 무의미하고 문제는 리그 파괴급의 용병과 선수를 누가 뽑느냐가 가장 중요해집니다. V리그 샐러리캡은 남자부는 25억, 여자부는 14억입니다.
올 초에 이와 관련해서 김연경 선수가 여자부 샐러리캡과 관련하여 sns에 글을 썼다 사과한 사건이 있었죠.
해외진출하고 오래돼서 국내 리그 실정에 대해 감을 잃었을테니 이해는 합니다만... 안타깝긴 했습니다.
사실 여자부 샐러리캡은 낮은 것 보다도 내후년부터 2년 동결이라는게 더 문제죠...
또한 여자부 샐러리캡에는 남자부에는 없는 특이한 제도가 있는데,
여자선수1인의 연봉이 샐러리캡의 25%(즉, 지금 상황에 경우 3.5억)를 넘으면 안 된다는... 더 보기
