지난 2016 유로 당시 아이슬란드와 알바니아를 소개했던 적이 있는데요, 이번에는 시기에 맞춰서 크로아티아를 소개해 볼까 합니다. 일단 카테고리는 여행으로 두긴 했는데 역사 이야기가 반이라 애매하긴 하네요. 우선 크로아티아라는 땅이 어디 있는지 알아야겠죠. 지도부터 봅시다.  한 국가의 영토라는 것이 원형을 이리저리 적당히 찌그러뜨린 모양으로 있는 게 보통인데 크로아티아는 그 영토의 모양이 퍽 특이합니다. 마치 알파벳 C처럼 생겼죠. 크로아티아의 C가 거기에서 유래...했을 리가 있나. 크로아티아라는 국명은 중세 라틴 어의 "Croatia"에서 유래합니다. 당연히 이 지역에서 라틴 어가 공용어가 아닌 이상 크로아티아 국민들이 스스로 크로아티아라고 부를 리는 만무하고(영어가 공용어인 시대이니 크로아티아라고 이야기해도 알아듣기는 합니다), 스스로는 흐르바츠카(Hrvatska)라고 합니다. 크로아티아 축구 경기를 유심히 보시다 보면, 부상 등으로 인해 코치진이나 의료진이 뛰어올 때 입고 있는 파란색 재킷 뒤쪽에 HRVATSKA라고 쓰여 있는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 이 흐르바츠카라는 단어가 대체 어디서 파생되었는가조차 엄청나게 의견이 갈리는 통에 뭐라 딱 결론을 내리기는 어렵다는군요. 고대 로마 시대에는 달마티아(Dalmatia) 속주 및 판노니아(Pannonia) 속주에 속했고, 이 발칸 반도 전체를 일컬어서 일리리아(Illyria)라고 불렀습니다. 조금 헷갈리는데, 우리 나라도 영남 지방의 경상북도, 호남 지방의 전라남도 이렇게 이야기하잖아요. 같은 식으로 따졌을 때 일리리아 지방의 달마티아 속주인 겁니다. 개 좋아하시는 분은 바로 점박이 개 달마시안을 떠올리실 텐데 바로 그 달마시안(Dalmatian, 달마티안)이 그 달마티아입니다. 애견가가 아닌 저로서는 뭐 이런 단체까지 있나 싶긴 한데 국제애견협회(Fédération Cynologique Internationale, FCI)에서 공식적으로 "역사적인 배경 및 근거로 보았을 때 달마시안의 원산지는 확실히 크로아티아라능."이라는 발표를 한 바 있습니다. 혼란의 3세기 로마 군주정 동안에 많은 수의 황제들이 즉위하고 죽었는데 일리리아 지방에서 꽤 많은 수의 황제가 나왔거든요. 클라우디우스 고티쿠스, 아우렐리아누스, 프로부스 등등... 그런데 이들이 태어난 장소는 크로아티아가 아닌 세르비아의 시르미움(Sirmium)이고, 크로아티아에서 태어난 (출생지가 확인된) 최초의 황제는 그 유명한 디오클레티아누스(Diocletianus)입니다. 로마를 넷으로 나누어서 정제 부제 하며 갈라서 통치하고 은퇴하는 통에 내전의 계기를 만든 그 황제죠. 이를 통일한 게 기독교를 공인한 콘스탄티누스 대제. 그 뒤로 크로아티아 출신이 로마 황제에 오르는 것이 한참 뒤의 4세기 초 발렌티니아누스 1세와 발렌스 황제인데... 아드리아노플 전투에서 전사한 바로 그 황제거든요. 로마가 오늘내일 하던 상황이니 굳이 그 뒤는 언급하지 않겠습니다. 이렇게 디오클레티아누스를 제외하고는 딱히 두각을 드러낸 건 아니었고, 중세에도 크로아티아 왕국이니 라구사 공화국(오늘날의 두브로브니크)이니 들어선 바 있습니다만 세계사 시간에 한 번 들어보지 못한 나라들이네요. 혹시 크킹이나 유로파 유니버살리스 내지는 대항해시대 같은 게임을 하신 분이라면 모를까... 중세 시대에 대해서는 제가 아는 바도 그렇게 많지 않아서 일단은 넘어가겠습니다. 이후가 문제죠.  위의 지도는 서기 1000년 전후의 유럽의 지도인데요, 크로아티아 지역을 보시면 조그맣게 K. of Croatia(크로아티아 왕국)이라 되어 있는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 이후 헝가리와 동군연합 상태를 거치고, 1100년경에 보스니아가 Banate of Bosnia, 즉 보스니아의 반(Ban)이 통치하는 지역으로 떨어져나가면서 두 나라의 역사가 갈라지기 시작하는 것이죠. Ban은 태수 내지는 도독으로 번역되니, 대략 보스니아 백작국 정도가 되지 않을까 싶네요. 공국보다는 좀 격이 떨어지고... 이게 이 지역에서만 통용되는 일종의 고유명사 같은 거라 번역이 상당히 어렵습니다. 우리 나라로 치면 대충 도지사 정도에 해당한다 보시면 됩니다. 이후 오스만 제국이 발칸 반도를 석권합니다. 영국과 프랑스가 백년 전쟁을 벌였듯이 크로아티아와 오스만 제국도 또 백년 전쟁을 벌였는데요(1493-1593), 이 전쟁이 대략 오늘날의 크로아티아와 보스니아의 경계선을 긋게 됩니다. 크로아티아는 어쨌든 간신히 나라를 지켜냈습니다만 오스만 제국으로부터 보스니아를 뺏기는 건 막지 못했고, 대략 이 시기에 크로아티아가 합스부르크 왕가의 영향력 아래에 들어가기로 하면서 합스부르크 제국의 역사와 같이 흘러갑니다. 그래서 이 지역의 역사가 겁나게 꼬여 있죠. 그나마도 크로아티아의 역사는 보스니아의 역사와 분리하기가 매우 어렵습니다.  1683년의 발칸 반도. 크로아티아가 쪼그라든 것과 보스니아-세르비아가 확실히 합스부르크의 역사와 갈라지는 게 보이시는지요. 이후 저 보스니아 영토가 약간 줄어들고, 1878년 크림 전쟁의 여파로 베를린 조약이 성립되면서 보스니아가 사실상 오스트리아-헝가리로 넘어가게 됩니다. 이 때가 되어서야 현대적인 크로아티아의 C자형 괴상한 국경이 거의 완성됩니다.  1910년의 오스트리아-헝가리 제국의 영토인데 이 때까지만 해도 보스니아는 명목상은 오스만 땅이되 통치는 오스트리아-헝가리가 하는 괴상한 구조를 취하다가 1909년에 보스니아를 완전히 차지해 버리거든요. 근데 보스니아는 지금도 그렇지만 세르비아계가 상당수를 차지하는 나라였고 세르비아가 보스니아를 취하려고 했는데 뜬금없이 오스트리아가 홀랑 먹어버리니 세르비아가 크게 격분한 건 당연한 일이었습니다. 이게 사라예보 사건의 불씨가 되는 거죠. 그리고 1차 대전이 터지고 오스트리아가 박살이 나면서 일리리아 땅에 새 국가가 세워지게 됩니다. 바로 이 국가가 유고슬라비아입니다. 유고슬라비아라는 국명은 남쪽(Yugo)의 슬라브(Slav)의 나라(ia)라는 뜻이죠. 발칸 반도의 잡다구리한 나라들 - 세르비아 왕국, 몬테네그로 왕국 등등 총 7개 국가 - 을 한데 몰아넣어 통일한 것이라고 생각하면 되겠습니다. 그런데 그럭저럭 잘 나가던 유고슬라비아가... 북으로는 독일 제3제국에, 동으로는 추축국인 헝가리/루마니아/불가리아, 서로는 이탈리아 파시스트, 그리고 남쪽의 알바니아를 1940년에 이탈리아가 접수하면서 졸지에 그리스 빼고 사방이 추축국에게 둘러싸인 격이 되었습니다. 당연히 유고슬라비아는 친추축국적 중립노선을 추구했는데(스웨덴이 자기 철광노선 왕창 열어줬던 것과 비슷한 맥락으로 보시면 됩니다) 문제는 이게 국민들에게 영 인기가 없었고, 쿠데타가 일어나면서 히틀러가 "얘들 아니 되겠구만"을 외치며 유고슬라비아에 기갑사단을 보내버립니다. 이게 유고슬라비아 침공이죠. 그리고 이게 크로아티아로서 엄청난 흑역사가 됩니다. 유고슬라비아 내지는 세르비아의 역사인데 왜 엉뚱하게 크로아티아의 흑역사가 되냐면... 이 유고슬라비아 침공의 결과로 히틀러가 독립시켜 세운 괴뢰 국가가 바로 크로아티아였거든요. 지금의 크로아티아와 보스니아-헤르체고비나를 합쳐서 크로아티아 독립국이 신설되고, 이를 이끄던 게 안테 파벨리치(Ante Pavelić). 바로 그 악명높은 우스타샤(Ustaša)를 이끈 장본인입니다. 우스타샤는 이 미쳐돌아가던 시기에, 단 4년 만에 최소 50만 명에 이르는 세르비아 인들을 학살했습니다. 어찌나 학살 행위가 잔혹했던지 그 독일 국방군마저 치를 떨었다는 이야기는 유명합니다. 전후 이 미친 학살자는 남미로 도망갔다가 1957년에 프랑코가 지배하는 스페인 땅으로 돌아왔고 1959년에 병으로 사망하는데, 그로 인해 죽어간 수많은 세르비아 인과 크로아티아 인(우스타샤와 싸우던 체트니크가 수만 명의 크로아티아 인을 학살했죠)의 넋을 기리고 그 한을 풀기에는 너무나 편한 죽음이 아니었나 합니다. 우스타샤에 대응하기 위해 체트니크를 창설하고 이끌었던 드라자 미하일로비치(Draža Mihailović)는 처음에는 독일군과 싸웠습니다. 그런데 나중에는 싸우라는 독일군과는 안 싸우고 외려 독일군 편에서 공산당 파르티잔을 잡는 데 혈안이 되어 있다가, 전후 티토에게 걸려 총살당하거든요. 2000년대에 들어와서 세르비아가 사면 복권하긴 했지만... 이후 유고슬라비아로 되돌아갔다가 독립합니다. 물론 그냥 공짜로 얻어진 독립은 아니었고 독립전쟁을 치러 수많은 인명이 희생된 끝에 얻어낸 독립이었죠. 세르비아가 슬로보단 밀로셰비치(Slobodan Milošević)를 필두로 막 나가다가 연방 구성국들의 큰 반발을 샀고, 여기저기서 독립 선언을 하게 되는데 가장 먼저 크로아티아와 슬로베니아가 독립을 선언했습니다. 슬로베니아는 세르비아와 맞닿아 있지 않았기 때문에 어쩔 수 없이 묵인했지만 크로아티아는 딱 붙어 있었고 독립 전쟁이 시작됩니다. 이 와중에 크로아티아 내에서 세르비아 편을 들던 일명 세르비아 크라이나 공화국(Republic of Serbian Krajina)이 크로아티아로부터 독립을 선언하여 세르비아 편에 붙는 등 상황은 막장으로 흘렀죠. 유고슬라비아를 이끌었던 티토가 이 꼴을 봤으면 뒷목 잡았을 겁니다. 티토가 크로아티아 출신이었기 때문에... 이 독립 전쟁은 결국 크로아티아의 완승으로 끝났습니다만 이 과정에서 30만 명의 세르비아 인과 22만 명의 크로아티아 인이 난민이 되었고, 세르비아가 크로아티아와의 전쟁에 온 신경이 곤두서있는 틈을 타 마케도니아가 독립했으며, 이들의 문제는 보스니아 내전이 지독하게 꼬이는 한 원인이 되죠. 그나마 1996년에 양국이 화해하고 과거사 문제를 같이 풀기로 하면서 지금으로서는 그나마 소 닭 보듯 하는 사이가 되었다 합니다만, 아마도 정확한 관계는 대략 한일관계에 준하지 않을까 합니다. 참고로 말씀드리면 보스니아 전쟁에서 6%의 전쟁범죄에 크로아티아가 관여되어 있어, 크로아티아도 그리 전쟁범죄 문제에서 깨끗하지는 못합니다. 세르비아의 90%에 비하면 낫기는 합니다만. 이처럼 발칸 반도의 역사는 가히 얽히고 설켜서 굉장히 복잡합니다. 머리가 아플 지경이죠. 그런 머리아픈 이야기는 여기까지 하도록 하고 이번에는 크로아티아 그 자체를 이야기해 봅시다.  크로아티아는 크게 다섯 구역으로 나눠볼 수 있겠습니다. 서부의 이스트리아(주황색), 중서부의 크바르네르(파란색), 중부의 크로아티아, 동부의 슬라보니아(연두색), 그리고 남부의 달마티아(녹색)입니다. 그리고 이게 크로아티아의 국장(國章)과 관련되어 있어요.  우선 이게 크로아티아의 국기입니다.  그리고 국기에 그려진 문양을 확대한 것이 이것인데, 위쪽의 다섯 개 문장은 왼쪽부터 각각 다음을 상징합니다. - 가장 오래 된 크로아티아를 상징하는 문장, - 두브로브니크(문장이 사용된 당시는 라구사, Ragusa로 통함) - 달마티아 지역 - 이스트리아 지역 - 슬라보니아 지역 그리고 가운데 체크무늬가 바로 크로아티아(정확히는 크바르네르 및 중부 크로아티아)를 상징함으로써 국기에 크로아티아의 소속 지역이 모두 나타나 있는 것이죠. 크로아티아 축구 국가대표팀이 체크무늬를 내세우는 것도 이 때문입니다. 심지어 검은색 어웨이 유니폼에서도 명확하지는 않지만 체크무늬가 그려져 있죠.  이번 월드컵에서의 마리오 만주키치의 모습입니다. 체크무늬가 보이시나요? 그래서 크로아티아 축구 국가대표팀을 가리켜서 현지에서는 바트레니(Vatreni, 전사들 - 직역하면 격렬한 녀석들)라는 말 외에도 코츠카스티(Kockasti, 체스 무늬들)라 부르기도 합니다. 이런 크로아티아의 영토는 북한의 절반 내지는 우리 나라의 60% 가량 되며(대략 영남+호남 정도의 사이즈라 보시면 됩니다), 인구는 약 410만 명으로 동남권 인구와 엇비슷합니다. 이렇게 인구가 적은 나라에서 월드컵 결승을 진출했다는 게 충격과 공포죠. 역대 월드컵 결승 진출국 중 두 번째로 인구가 적은 나라입니다(가장 적은 나라는 우루과이, 370만 명). GDP는 우리 나라의 절반 가량이지만 수입이 높은 나라라고 UN에서 분류하네요. 나라가 조그맣고 뭐 딱히 나오는 게 별볼일없는지 2/3의 수입을 3차 산업에 의존합니다. 바로 관광업이죠. 나라 자체가 아드리아 해를 따라 죽 붙어 있고 이 해변이 워낙 아름답다 보니 - 2010년 유럽 환경청(European Environmental Agency, EEA)에서 두번째로 깨끗한 바다로 선정되기까지 했죠 - 많이들 아드리아 해로 나갑니다. 오죽하면 수도인 자그레브(Zagreb)보다 아드리아 해의 휴양지인 스플리트(Split) 내지는 두브로브니크(Dubrovnik) 쪽으로 사람이 더 몰리는 형편이죠.  두브로브니크 구 시가지 전경. 이 사진을 보니 저도 크로아티아에 가 보고 싶네요.  스플리트 남동쪽 60 km 가량 떨어진 곳에 있는 마카르스카(Makarska)라는 곳입니다. 굉장히 높은 산 바로 옆에 바다라는 상당히 이질적인 장면이 퍽 특이한 곳이죠. 이처럼 크로아티아가 어서옵쇼를 외치면서 수많은 사람들이 아드리아 해로 빠지고, 또 두브로브니크가 워낙 유명하다 보니 많은 사람들이 두브로브니크를 찾는데... 두브로브니크 여행할 때 주의점이 있어요. 지도상으로 보면 잘 모르는데 크로아티아 본토와 두브로브니크가 서로 연결되어 있지 않다는 점이 그겁니다.  지도를 자세히 보세요. 상아색이 크로아티아 땅이고, 회색이 보스니아 헤르체고비나 땅인데 저기 네움(Neum)으로 되어 있는 아주 조그맣게 난 곳이 바로 보스니아 헤르체고비나의 땅이거든요. 이거 하나 때문에 크로아티아는 꼼짝없이 비연속국(자기 영토를 갈 때 남의 나라를 무조건 지나가야 하는 나라)이 되어 버렸죠. 역사적으로는 네움이 라구사(현 두브로브니크)와 베네치아 사이의 싸움을 중재하기 위한 완충지대로 설정된 탓에 오스만 소속이던 보스니아에 편입되었기 때문에 보스니아 땅인 게 맞다고들 하는데... 양국은 이걸 놓고 싸우기는 뭣했던지 1999년에 비공식적으로 네움을 통하는 크로아티아 차량은 자유롭게 패스할 수 있는 대신 보스니아가 플로체(Ploče) 항구를 이용할 수 있도록 합의했습니다. 그도 그럴 것이 네움은 항구로 쓰기에는 너무 작았거든요.  요게 크로아티아 철도망인데, 저기 남쪽에 짧은 선이 있는 게 보이실 겁니다. 저게 플로체 항구인데, 저 철로는 크로아티아 본토가 아닌 엉뚱하게도 보스니아 헤르체고비나의 사라예보로 빠지는 철로거든요. 그래서 사실상 보스니아 헤르체고비나의 수출항 역할을 하는 셈이라 보스니아와 크로아티아의 이해관계가 맞아떨어진 겁니다. 아, 그리고 아까 네움 지도에서 웬 빨간색 짧은 선이 있는데 그게 펠레샤츠 다리(Pelješac Bridge)로, 크로아티아 본토끼리 가기 위해서 건설 중인 다리입니다. 보스니아의 반발로 2012년에 건설이 중지되었다가 어찌저찌 타협을 보았는지 2018년에 재개되었는데, 2022년에나 완공될 예정이라는군요. 이전에 소개드린 알바니아에 비하면 크로아티아는 훨씬 교통편이 잘 되어 있는 편입니다. 두브로브니크로의 통행도 딱히 큰 문제는 되지 않고(다만 보스니아가 문제가 되겠네요. 보스니아나 크로아티아나 무비자 협정국이라 일반인은 상관없습니다만 국외여행 허가를 받아야 하는 군인 혹은 미필이라면...) 전국이 그런대로 도로망 철도망이 잘 깔려 있는 편이라서요. 단, 그래도 관광객들이 많은 곳으로 가는 편이 신상에 안전합니다. 인적이 드문 곳에는 전쟁의 상흔 때문에 여기저기 지뢰가 깔려 있거든요. 그것만 빼면 여행경보가 발령된 것도 없고 하니 무더운 날씨만 조심하면 좋은 여행이 되지 않을까 싶네요. 어떠십니까. 이번 여름 행선지로 한 번 고려해보시는 것이. 크로아티아에 대한 소개는 이 정도로 하겠습니다. 유명 관광지의 사진을 몇 군데 더 소개하는 것으로 마무리하죠.  크로아티아 최북단, 슬로베니아와의 국경에 있는 트라코슈찬 성(Trakošćan Castle)입니다. 무려 13세기에 지어진 아주 오래 된 고성이죠.  플리트비체 호수국립공원(Plitvice Lakes National Park). 크로아티아 중부에 있습니다. 호수와 함께 폭포도 아주 볼 만하다는군요. 다만 우리 나라 여행객이 실족사한 바 있기 때문에 이동에는 조심해야겠습니다.  디오클레티아누스 황궁 내부. 스플리트(Split) 시내에 있습니다. 인근에서 꿀 빨면서 휴식하다가 여기를 둘러보고 가는 것도 괜찮은 선택이라고 봅니다.  스플리트 인근의 트로기르(Trogir)인데, 로마-고딕 양식이 전 중유럽에서 가장 잘 보존되어 있는 곳 중 하나라는 평가를 듣는 곳입니다. 건축양식에 관심이 있으신 분들에게는 충분히 고려해 볼 만한 옵션.  풀라 아레나. 현존하는 로마 시대의 경기장 중 6번째로 큰 이 경기장은 풀라(Pula)에 위치해 있는데요, 풀라는 바로 크로아티아 최서부의 이스트리아에 있습니다. * 수박이님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2018-07-30 07:54) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다.
