고양이와 살다 보면 가벼운 피부병이나 하부요로증후군, 허피스 같은 것들이 왔다가 지나갑니다. 이런 질병들은 동물병원에 다니면서 환경을 개선하고 꾸준히 관리하다 보면 다행히 어느새 나아있어요. 아래는 좀 더 심각한 질병인 신장병, 심장병, 악성종양 같은 질병으로 확진된 노령의 고양이 경우, 그러니까 대개 고양이 삶의 마지막 투병 기간 동안에 약간 도움이 되실까 싶어서 정리해 보았습니다. 1) 간병 정보를 얻기 위한 카페 가입
카페 가입으로 충분하지는 않았어요. 반려인이 이렇게 많은데도 고양이 질병에 관한 이해는 카페보다는 구글링이 나았습니다. 고양이 희귀질환은 동물병원에서 관련 논문을 프린트 형태로 제공하기도 합니다. 자료를 요청하셔도 됩니다. 2) 어려운 결정들 반려인이 수의사와 상담하며 신중하게 결정해야 합니다. 하나의 명쾌한 답은 없어요. 제 경우는 아래와 같았습니다. 2-1) 병원 선택 최근 몇 년 동안 동물병원의 대형화는 뚜렷한 추세입니다. 임상경험과 판독의 전문성을 찾다보면 결국 대형 동물병원을 가게 되더군요. 그러나 수의과대학 부속 동물병원이든, 00전문 동물병원이든 사람을 위한 3차 병원의 진료와 관리 같은 것을 동물병원에 기대하지 않는 편이 낫습니다. 로컬을 전전하는 것보다 처음부터 평이 좋은 곳을 선택하는 편이 나았어요.2-2) 입원 치료 영역 동물인 고양이의 입원 치료는 신중할 수밖에 없습니다. 질병으로 인해 체력이 떨어진 노령의 고양이에게 며칠 혹은 수 주가 넘어가는 입원은 스트레스로 인해 식욕을 떨어뜨리고 수치를 올립니다. 원래의 식욕을 회복하는 데까지 얼마나 걸릴지, 노령묘의 경우 식욕이 돌아오기는 할지 간병 중에는 알 수 없습니다. 동물병원이 특별히 이 점에 대해 잘 이해하고 고양이 입원에 대해 반려인과 매우 신중하게 상의해 주는 곳이라면 좋은 고양이 병원이라고 생각합니다.2-3) 식도관 시술 노령의 고양이가 위중한 질병의 와중에 자발적 식욕이 완전히 사라지고 며칠 혹은 1주일 이상 경과한 채 체중 변화가 현저하다면 식도관 시술을 하는 편이 나았습니다. 먹는 것이 가장 중요하고, 먹는 만큼 더 나은 상태로 더 오래 투병할 수 있습니다. 자발적 식욕이 절반 이상 사라지면 부분적으로 강제급식을 해야 하고, 완전히 사라지면 강제급식으로 매일을 버텨야 하는데, 이것이 쉽지 않습니다. 어떤 고양이도 한 번에 충분할 만큼 많은 양을 먹이기 어렵고, 큰 스트레스를 받습니다. 퇴근한 직장인이 가능한 한 많이 먹이려고 수 회에 걸쳐 시간과 노력을 다하는데도 1일 요구섭취량의 절반을 넘기기 어려운 경우가 많습니다. 마취 부작용과 염증의 위험이 있더라도 적절한 검사 후 식도관을 장착하면 일단 잘 먹일 수 있습니다. 식도관 장착한 상태로 자발 식욕이 돌아오기도 합니다. 시술 당일을 제외하면 입원이 필요하지 않았고, 고양이가 생활하는 동안 다행히 염증도 없었고 꼼꼼한 시술 덕분에 관이 이탈하는 경우도 없었습니다. 3) 간병을 위한 간단한 팁 3-1) 먹이기 치료는 병원이 하고 있으니 중요한 것은 먹이는 것입니다. 먹이는 방법에 대해서는 위의 간병 카페에 잘 나와있습니다. 3-1-1) 유동식캔3-1-2) 주사기 용량 3-1-4) 급여 방법흔히 주사기 끝을 송곳니와 어금니 사이 틈으로 넣어 측면에서 주는 방법을 많이 사용하지만 정답은 없습니다. 제 경우 오히려 위아래 앞니 사이로 정면에서 줄 때 더 편안해 했습니다. 이리 저리 방법을 바꾸며 고양이가 스트레스를 덜 받는 방법을 찾아보세요. 엘리자베스 칼라(부채꼴 플라스틱 턱받이)가 있으면 급여에 도움이 됩니다. 3-2) 피하수액 주기 대개 50ml주사기를 사용하는데, 50ml 주사기는 바늘 18G, 나비침은 23G-25G가 알맞습니다. 특히 나비침의 게이지는 높아야 고양이가 아파하지 않습니다. 수액의 온도도 중요합니다. 차가운 수액이 들어가면 질색을 합니다.3-3) 기록하기 낱장 종이와 연필을 냉장고에 붙여두고 그때 그때 기록했습니다. 냉장고 주변에서 밥과 수액을 수시로 준비하기 때문에 이쪽이 편했습니다. 그날의 섭취량, 배설량, 복약 기록, 구토와 설사, 호흡과 운동량 등 컨디션 모두를 포함한 간병일지를 일과 후에 단번에 적는 것도 쉽지 않습니다. 4) 고양이 항암에 대해
