왜 우리는 한국슨슈가 국제대회에서 성과를 내면 뽕을 맞는 걸까요. 이 문제에 대해 사회과학적 접근을 해볼 테니 카테고리는 과학으로 고고. 사회과학쟁이들은 대놓고 말은 못해도 속으로는 다들 조심스레 성악설을 품고 삽니다. 뭔소린가하면, 인간이란 족속들을 대량으로 움직일 수 있는 인센티브는 돈, 명예, 아니면 돈+명예 밖에 없다고 믿지요. 쉽게 말해, 축구선수는 우승컵을 향한 열망으로 특급 유럽팀에 가든지 아니면 연봉대박의 꿈을 안고 중국으로 가든지 둘 중 하나라는 거예요 (물론 개인단위에선 이 둘의 영향으로부터 벗어난 기인협사들이 있을 수 있지만 그런 사람들 물고빠는 건 인문학도들의 몫). 이런 관점에서 살펴본다면 한국 사람들이 국뽕에 취하는 이유란 결국 일부 한국인(들)의 성공이 다른 한국인들에게 돈 혹은 명예의 차원에서의 보상을 주기 때문이라고 정리할 수 있어요. 과연 그러한지 어디 한 번 봅시다. 1. 돈 내 고3 동기동창 40명 중 39명이 노벨상을 받는다고 생각해보세요. 이 일대 사건으로 인해 '나'의 기대이득이 떡상할 거라는 건 자못 명확해 보여요. 어떻게든 같은 인맥으로 묶여있는 사람들에게 술을 얻어먹든 다단계를 걸든 뭐라도 할 수 있겠지요 ㅎㅎ 2. 명예 이 부분은 좀 더 복잡해요. 동창이 모두 노벨상을 받았을 때 내가 기대할 수 있는 명예보상치가 있기는 한지, 있다면 얼마나 기대할 수 있는지를 분석해야 하는데, 금전과는 달리 명예는 좀 추상적이잖아요 ㅎㅎ 그래서 분석에 앞서 과연 명예란 무엇인가에 대해 잠시 알아볼 필요가 있어요. 최근에 사회과학 책을 보다가 재밌는 관점을 알게됐어요. 사람은 누구나 사회 전체에 대한 미니어쳐 모형을 자기 나름의 버젼으로 편집해서 머리속에 넣어놓고 다닌대요. 세상은 너무 복잡하고 알아야할 건 넘나 많기 때문에 그 하나하나를 다 기억해둘 순 없으니 세상만물의 특징들을 최대한 간략하게 추려서 작은 인형으로 만들어놓는다는 거지요. 그리고 무슨 일이 생겼을 때 그 일을 처리하기 위해서 그런 인형들을 꺼내서 머리 속의 테이블 위에 올려놓고 이리저리 움직여가며 대응한다는 거예요. 이 인형들에는 명성치가 붙는대요. 이 명성치가 붙는 방식은 선형 (0부터 100까지 한 줄로 이어지는 점수표)일 수도 있고 면형 (X축과 Y축으로 구성된 4사분면)일 수도 있고 아니면 더 복잡할 수도 있어요. 하지만 명성치가 있다는 것 자체는 확실해요. 많은 사람들이 선형 명성표를 머리 속에 넣어놓고 살면서 대략 '나보다 나은' '나보다 못한' '나랑 비슷한' 레벨로 다른 인형들을 구분한대요. 그래서 나보다 나은 인형들에겐 존경을 (defer), 나보다 못한 인형들에겐 깔봄을 (derogate) 나랑 비슷한 인형들에겐 수용을 (accept) 시전한대요. 당연히 많은 사회적 상호작용은 대체로 이 '비슷한 인형들' 간에 이루어지구요. 교분, 연애, 결혼, 동업, 기타등등. 전근대 사회에 비해 '나랑 비슷한 레벨' 영역이 엄청나게 넓어지긴 했지만, 현대사회에서도 '위'나 '아래' 레벨이 분명히 있다고 해요. 그리고, 이건 너무 당연한 말이지만, 다들 자기 명성치를 더 위쪽으로 올리고 싶어하구요. 3. 개인과 집단 여기서 우리는 이런 생각을 해볼 수 있어요. 그래 명성치 같은 게 있다고 치고 그걸 얻기 위해 노력하는 것도 당연하다고 치자. 그런데 명성은 각각의 개인에게 귀속되는 거 아닌가? 정현이 테니스로 유명세를 날리면 정현의 명성이 상승한 거지 그걸 티비로 보고 있는 우리의 명성이 상승한 건 아니잖아. 하지만 인형에는 개인인형도 있지만 집단인형도 있어요. 개인 인형에 명성치가 붙는 것처럼 집단 인형에도 명성치가 붙구요. 하버드는 하버드고, 메사츄세츠 공대는 [하버드 같은 거]잖아요. 그러니 두 집단의 명성치에는 분명한 차이가 있지요 ㅎㅎ. 집단의 명성치는 집단 구성원의 퍼포먼스에 영향을 받아서 등락해요. 메사츄세츠 공대에서 10년 연속으로 노벨상 수상자 + 미국대통령이 나오는 동안 하버드가 빌빌거린다면 어쩌면 처지가 역전돼서 하버드가 [MIT같은 거]가 될지도 몰라요. 국가 단위의 인형은... (폴란드 볼은 https://namu.wiki/w/%ED%8F%B4%EB%9E%80%EB%93%9C%EA%B3%B5 참조) 영국인:음식최악. 새침함 프랑스인: 열정. 비합리적. 독일인: 냉정. 시간엄수. 맥주. 이탈리아인: 베롤루스코니. 파스타. 캐나다인: I'm sorry 뭐 이런식이지요 ㅋ 마찬가지로 위에서 말한 '존경(defer)' '깔봄(derogate)' '수용(accept)' 의 3종 대응법을 개인 뿐 아니라 집단 레벨에도 적용시켜볼 수 있어요. 한국이라는 집단인형은 여태 저 위쪽 인형들에겐 동류 취급을 못받았지요. 그런데 요즘은 명성치가 많이 올라가서 그런지 나름 동급으로 봐주기도 해요. 명성레벨이 낮은 쪽에선 한국 인형을 존경하는 경우도 좀 생겼구요. 뭐, 잘 된 일 아니겠어요 ㅎㅎ 그런데 여기서 다른 의문을 제기할 수 있어요. '한국' 인형에 명성치 뽐뿌가 들어가면 많은 사람들의 머리 속에 존재하는 '한국' 인형의 위상이 올라가요. 그리고 그렇게 집단 차원에서의 명성 상승이 개개인의 명성 상승으로 이어진다고 해봐요. 또 '한국'인형의 명성이 상승함으로 인해 외국러가 실제로, 정말로 대한민국 사람들을 만났을 때 좀 더 제대로 대접해준다고 해봐요. 하지만, 우리가 국뽕을 느끼고 울부짖을 때 그런 계산이 서서 울부짖는게 아니잖아요? 그냥 막 그냥 좋잖아요 ㅎㅎ. 그 즉발성에 대해선 다음과 같이 분석해볼 수 있겠어요. 4. 집단 아이덴터티 저는 다른 누구와도 대체불가능한 단독자 기아트윈스인 것처럼 보이지만, 실은 우리 가족의 구성원이고, 한국인이고, A초등학교 출신이고, B지역 출신인 기아트윈스예요. 깊은 산속에 홀로 사는 신선이 아닌 이상 우리는 모두 어떤 집단에 중복 소속되어있고, 그 집단들은 우리 아이덴터티의 많은 부분을 차지하고 있지요. 이런 종류의 집단들을 샌델 선생은 구성적 공동체(constitutive communities)라고 했다든가 그래요. 그니까, 어떤 집단들은 소속원의 아이덴터티를 근본적 차원에서 구성하고 있다는 거예요. 말이 어려우니 여기서는 그냥 [집단 아이덴터티]라고 부를게요. 어떤 집단 아이덴터티는 보다 쉽게 포기할 수 있어요. 예컨대 전 X초등학교 출신이고 그 사실은 영원히 변하지 않을 테지만 거기에 대한 기억도 없고 연락되는 친구도 없고... 말하자면, '손절'한 주식과 같아요. 그 초등학교가 잘나간대서 득볼 것도 없지만 폭망한다고해도 손해볼 것 없지요. 쿠티뉴는 리버풀 축구단의 일원이었지만 이제 바르셀로나 축구단의 슨슈가 됐지요. 그리고는 바르셀로나 축구단이라는 집단을 자기 아이덴터티의 일부로 아주 빠르게 받아들였어요. 빛의 속도로 리버풀 손절 ㄷㄷ 반면에 어떤 집단 아이덴터티는 손절하기가 매우매우 어렵거나 사실상 불가능해요. 전 성장과정을 거치면서 비가역적으로, 그러니까, 돌이킬 수 없는 수준으로 한국인이 되어버렸어요. 제 선택은 아니었지만 어쨌든 버릴래야 버릴 수가 없지요. 해태 팬으로 태어나면 해태 팬으로 살 수 밖에 없고 한화 팬으로 태어나면 한화 팬으로 살 수 밖에 없는 것과 같아요. 이젠 다른 야구팀은 응원할 수 없는 몸이 되어버렷.... 이건 팔 수 없는 주식에 잔뜩 물려서 존버하고있는 거랑 비슷해요. 어떤 주식에 잔뜩 물려있으면... 이건 팔 수도 없고 더 살 돈도 없고 그냥 그렇게 주저 앉아서 망하든 터지든 울면서 붙잡고있는 거지요. 그러다보면 그 주식, 그 회사에 온갖 애환이 서리게 돼요. [이 못난 김무성 테마주야. 옆집 바이오도 떡상, 엔터도 떡상인데 넌 왜 이모양이니ㅜㅜ 못난 것아 못난 것아] 하며 울부짖어봤자 이게 다 좋은 경험이다 생각하고 넘어가야지 별 수 있나요. 그러던 어느날 김무성씨가 백마탄 초인이 되어 돌아와 테마주가 떡상이라도 치면.... ㅎㅎㅎ... 용솟음치는 기쁨과 동시에 긴 세월 동안 빌빌거리던 생각, 그 긴 슬픔의 터널이 떠올라서 벅차오르는 설움에 눈물이 광광 쏟아질 거예요. 정리하자면, 집단의 영광과 자신의 영광을 즉각적으로 동일시하는 현상이 나타나는 건 해당 집단 아이덴터티를 결코 버릴 수 없다는 측면 (indispensability) 때문이다...라고 해볼 수 있어요. 5. 선진국 vs 개도국 자신이 보유한 집단아이덴터티 (국가, 민족, 인종, 학연, 지연 등등)가 일종의 보유주식이라고 치고, 그래서 즉발적으로 포효한다고 치고, 그렇다면 어째서 어떤 국가 사람들은 국뽕을 덜 느끼는 반면 다른 어떤 국가 사람들은 국뽕에 환장하느냐는 질문을 던져볼 수 있어요. 전 이걸 [분산투자]개념으로 이해해요. A라는 사람이 있어요. 이 사람은 축구계에 몸담은 사람이에요. 축구 말고는 다른 걸 해 본 적도 없고 할 생각도 없어요. 이 친구의 아이덴터티의 대부분은 '축구인'이에요. 이 사람은 축구판이 망하면 진짜 망하는 거예요. 축구판이라는 집단에 자기 아이덴터티를 몰빵투자한 셈이지요. B 역시 축구계에 몸담은 사람이에요. 하지만 B는 관심분야가 다양해요. 그래서 비록 축구계에 취직해서 돈을 벌긴 하지만 테니스, 골프, 야구, 당구, 수영을 모두 준프로 급으로 잘해요. 해당 동호회들에 나가면 언니오빠형누나들이 다들 이뻐해줘요. B는 자기가 기본적으로 축구인이라고 생각하지만 축구판이 망한대도 B는 그다지 가슴아파하지 않을 거예요. 그렇다면 우리 축구계에 영웅적인 존재가 나타날 경우 A가 더 기뻐할까요 B가 더 기뻐할까요. B도 기뻐야 하겠지만 A는 정말 환장할 가능성이 높아요. 소위 '선진국'은 대개 서유럽 + 그들의 후손국가들이에요. 이들은 대개 식민지 경영 경험이 있어요. 그래서 자국어를 사용하는 국가가 한 개 이상인 경우가 대부분이예요. 그러다보니 사회>>>>국가 라는 생각을 품기 쉬워요. 영국이나 호주나 캐나다나 미국이나 다 앵글로폰사회잖아요. 영국이 망하면 영국인은 미국가서 살면 돼요 ㅋㅋ 국가 외의 다른 집단 아이덴터티를 개발, 보유하기 쉽다는 측면에서 얘들은 B형이라고 할 수 있어요. 반면에 식민지 경영 경험이 없는 국가들은 많은 경우 조국=민족이예요. 그래서 이들은 국경을 넘어서는 집단을 자기 아이덴터티로 받아들이는 걸 어려워해요. (북한은 나라가 아니므로) 대한민국 망하면 한국인은 (거의) 다 망하는 거지요 뭐...'ㅅ' 방법이 있나... 그러다보니 국가 아이덴터티에 좀 몰빵하는 경향이 있어요. A형이지요. 그럼 B형이 더 좋은거냐...하면... 좋긴 좋은데 그게 꼭 늘 좋은 건 아니에요. A형처럼 몰빵했는데 그게 대박이라도 나면 기분이가 아주...ㅎㅎ... 황홀하지요.
