[주의: 글이 좀 깁니다. 죄송하지만 개인적인 얘기가 너무 많아 언젠가 지울지도 모릅니다.] 1. 미친 사람을 처음 보다 "소맥이 왔니?" 국민학교 4학년의 어느 여름날. 무거운 책가방을 내려놓는 찰라 엄마가 안방에서 불현듯 튀어나와 나를 바라본다. 무섭다. 내가 평소에 보던 엄마의 눈의 아니다. 눈이 풀려있다. 직감했다. 불면증에 오랜 시간 잠 못 이루던 엄마가 쉽게 말해 '미친' 것이다. 할아버지가 놀라서 뛰쳐나왔다. 조용히 엄마를 안방으로 데리고 간 뒤에, 다시 나를 불렀다. "엄마가 잠을 오랜기간 못자서 좀 아프다. 너무 놀라지 말거라. 자면 괜찮아 질거다" 원래 엄마는 오랜기간 아팠다. 국민학교 입학을 1년도 남기지 않았던 어느날, 응급실로 실려갔다. 급성폐렴이었다. 심각한 상황이었다고 했다. 의사들은 엄마를 중환자실에 옮기면서 아버지와 할아버지에게 "마음의 준비를 하셔야겠다"고 했다. 기적이 일어났다. 중환자실에서 생사를 넘나들다가 서서히 회복해 일반병실로 옮겼다. 사람들은 "무녀독남 아들놈 하나 국민학교도 못 넣고 세상 떠나기가 힘들었나 보다"라고 말했다. 나중에 들은 얘기다. 그땐 난 너무 어렸으니까. 엄마가 집으로 왔다. 목에는 호스를 꼽았던 흉터가 남았다. 당연히 완전히 회복되지는 않았다. 늘 아픈 엄마, 내 기억 속의 엄마의 모습에 대한 첫 기억은 집으로 돌아온 그날이었던 거 같다. 그 이후 우리집에는 늘 투병하는 환자가 드리우는 특유의 분위기가 항상 흐르게 됐다. 난 어렸고, 당연히 엄마는 언젠가 완전히 나을 것이라 믿었다. 그렇게 몇 년이 지나고 나는 열심히 학교를 다녔다. 내 인생 유일한 '모범생' 시기였다. 4학년때 그날 그일을 계기로 엄마는 정신과 치료를 함께 받았다. 당시 엄마를 살려냈던 대학병원의 명의 H박사는 나중에 가슴을 쳤다고 한다. "000씨는 사실 맘의 병도 깊은 분이었는데, 내가 그걸 모르고 몸만 치료하려 들었다"는 후회였다. 정신과를 다니면서 엄마의 건강은 급격히 회복됐다. 5학년쯤 되자, 엄마는 거의 환자가 아닌 것처럼 보일 정도였다. 집에 산소호흡기가 들어왔다. 6학년이 되자 엄마의 건강이 다시 급격히 악화됐다. 집에서 엄마는 코에 투명호스를 꽂고 호흡에 도움을 받아야 할 정도가 됐다. 나는 그때까지만 해도 엄마가 세상을 떠난다는 생각은 해보지 않았다. 그건 그냥 드라마나 영화에서나 나오는 얘기라고 생각했다. 하지만 중학교 입학한 지 며칠 뒤 엄마는 숨을 거뒀다. 아무런 경황이 없었다. 아버지와 할아버지가 나서서 상을 다 치르고 나는 훌쩍이며 상복을 입고 서있었을 뿐. 1년이 채 지나지 않아, 아버지는 새출발하는 마음으로 당시 '노처녀'였던 한 여자를 만나 결혼했다. 완전히 새로운 삶을 시작하고 싶어하셨기에 회사에 해외지사 신청을 내 나와 새어머니를 데리고 김포공항을 나섰다. 몰랐다. 진짜 황당하고 불행한 일은 그 이후에 벌어질 것이라는 걸 2. 잘못된 만남 "다 됐어" 이국땅에서 맞은 방학, 딱히 할 일도 없었던 사춘기 소년은 집에서 책이나 뒤적이고 TV나 보고있었다. 벌써 몇달 째인지 모른다. 둘 사이에 오가는 대화는 없다. 뭔가 모를 의무감에 내게 밥을 차려주고는 "소맥아 밥먹어라"라는 말조차 하지 않았다. 그저 자신의 의무를 다한 것을 암시하듯 "다 됐다"고 말할 뿐. 처음부터 그랬던 건 아니다. 처음에는 서로 친해져보려고 노력을 하는 게 느껴졌다. 오랜 시간 혼자 살아온 강하고 똑똑한 엘리트 여성 한 명과 철 모르는 중학생은 그러나 종종 충돌할 일이 생겼다. 그런데 이게 어쩌다 그 지경까지 됐는지는 모른다. 애를 키워본적도 없는 30대 후반의 여자와 반항심 가득하던 사춘기 소년은 그렇게 서로를 외면하고 있었다. 아주 나중에 할아버지한테 들은 얘기에 힌트가 있을지는 모르겠다. 잠깐 한국에서 해외로 건너와 계셨던 할아버지는 "나도 내가 열심히 말 걸고 해봤는데, 나한테 먼저 말하지는 않더라. 소맥이 니가 외로웠겠다. 좀 냉정한 사람 같다" 그렇다고 그게 온전히 그 사람의 잘못이라고 하기는 어렵다. 결국 한 번 크게 터졌다. 아버지 앞에서는 서로 조심하던 그 사람과 내가 아버지 앞에서 대판 싸운 거다. 아버지는 줄담배를 피고 다시 들어오셨다. 며칠 뒤, "네 동생을 하나 만들어야겠다"는 말씀을 하셨다. "너와 나는 피로 연결돼 있지만, 네 새엄마와 나는 그런게 없다. 그래도 가족을 유지하려면 이 방법이 필요할 것 같다" 나는 받아들였다. 오랜 병수발을 끝내고 새롭게 출발하고 싶었던 아버지의 마음을 조금이나마 이해했기 때문이리라. 어느날 동생이 생겼다. 예쁜 여동생이다. 태어나서 처음이었다. 나와 피가 섞인 누군가가 우리집에서 아기 침대 위에 누워있었다. 너무 귀여웠다. 자꾸 가서 볼에 뽀뽀도 하고 그랬다. 우리 집은 그렇게 평화를 찾아가는 듯 했다. 하지만 내 인생이 그리 평탄할리가 없었다. 3. 억울함 "놔 놔 이새끼야! 이 X발새끼" 그랬다. 그 사람 입에서 차마 입에 담지 못할 얘기가 튀어나와, 나한테 꽂혔다. 나는 그 사람이 든 전화기를 뺏으려고 안간힘을 쓰고 있었고, 그 사람은 중3 남자애의 힘을 당하지 못하고 결국 내 손을 깨물었다. 손에 이빨자국이 선명히 박혔고 피가 조금씩 흘렀다. '하아, x발. 내 인생이 어쩌다 이 지경이 됐냐'라는 생각이 머릿속을 스쳤다. 그래도 당장 그 사람이 여동생을 데리고 한국으로 돌아가겠다며 비행기 티켓을 끊는 상황은 막아야했다. 왜 그랬는지 모르겠는데, 아버지 걱정이 됐다. '이거 이대로 진행되면 아버지 쓰러질지도 모른다'라는 게 그때 내 생각이었다. "다 됐어"로 상징되는 냉정함은 이복동생이 생긴 뒤에 다른 형태로 발전한 상황이었다. 아버지가 퇴근했을때, 집에 함께 있을때에 나는 동생을 예뻐하고 안아볼 시간이 주어졌다. 그런데 아버지만 없으면 그 사람은 동생을 안아보지도 못하게 했다. 안아보지 못한다는 사실이 아니라, 아버지가 있을때와 없을때 판이하게 다른 행동에 화가났다. 그날도 나는 방학이었고, 아버지는 출근했다. 출근한 뒤에 "00이 한 번 안아볼게요"라고 말했다가 냉정하게 거절당했다. 그래서 한 마디 쏘아 붙였다. "아니 왜 아버지 있을때랑 없을때 그리 다릅니까?" 그러자 그 사람도 뭔가 맺힌 게 있었는지 미친듯이 나를 몰아붙였다. "내 새끼야. 건드리지마. 너 성욕풀데 없어서 애기 한테 괜히 뽀뽀하고 그러는거지?" 하아 x발. 태어나서 처음 생긴 동생이 그저 예뻤던 그 마음을 그 따위로 해석할 줄은 상상도 못했다. 둔기로 뒤통수를 맞은 것 같았다. 나도 빡쳤다. 뭐라고 했는지 기억안난다. 아마 뭔가 억울하고 화가나서 뭐라고 했을 거 같다. 그래도 막말은 안했던 걸로 기억나는데, 모르지 뭐. 서로 소리를 지르던 와중 그 사람이 "나 내새끼 델꼬 한국갈거야"라며 전화기를 들었고 그 사달이 났다. 깨물린 상처를 보자 나도 서러워졌다. 화장실로 갔다. 샤워를 했다. 엄청 울었다. 그리고 짐을 쌌다. 일단 내가 이 집을 나가는 게 편하지 않을까 싶었다. 무작정 콜택시를 불러 아는 선배 집으로 향했다. 선배 집에 가서 하루 종일 있었다. 그 선배는 원래 집 나온 애들 잘 받아주는 맘씨 좋고 넉넉한, 후배들 사이에서는 '큰 형'같은 존재였다. 선배 어머니가 나를 불렀다. 내 전후사정을 다 들으신 모양이었다. 젊은 시절 이민와서 산전수전 다 겪은 교포 아줌마의 현명함이었을지 아니면 독실한 크리스찬 아주머니의 기도응답이었는지는 모를 일이었다. "일단 마음이 진정됐을테니 아버지를 찾아가라. 가서 상황을 설명해라. 아마 지금 니 새엄마란 사람, 남편의 아들이 집을 나가서 완전히 안절부절일거다. 차라리 곪은 게 터졌으니 앞으로 관계가 더 나아질 수도 있다. 일단 아버지한테 가라" 그렇게 아버지 회사앞으로 찾아갔다. 그 아주머니 말이 맞았다. 아버지는 생각보다 침착하셨고(끊었던 담배를 사와 다시 꺼내 물긴 했지만) 용돈을 쥐어주며 오늘 하루는 그 선배 집이든 친구집이든 가서 쉬다가 집으로 들어오라고 하셨다. 그리고 그 사람은 당분간 내 동생과 함께 한국으로 보내서 맘을 풀게 해야겠다고 했다. 그 사람은 두 달 정도 일정으로 한국으로 떠났고, 나는 아버지와 나름 즐거운 부자의 정을 나누며 지냈다. 아마 아버지도 아들놈이 크게 내색안했지만, 꽤나 그동안 새엄마랑 고달팠다는 걸 알았는지도 모르겠다. 몇 달 뒤 그 사람이 돌아왔다. 서로 친해지긴 어려운 관계였지만 서로 조심하는 관계는 됐다. 뭐 이렇게 지내다보면 정도 들고 괜찮아지겠지...이제 뭔가 안정화 되려나 싶었다. 물론 내 인생이 그럴리가 없었다. 4. 죄책감 그리고... "뭐하다 이제 왔냐? 들어가서 자라!" 화난 기운을 감지하고 조용히 방으로 들어가 몸을 뉘였다. 그런데, 지금 들리는 이 목소리는 아버지와 함께 근무하던 아저씨의 목소리였다. 꿈인가 싶었는데 꿈이 아니었다. 벌떡 일어나 안방으로 그 아저씨와 함께 달려갔다. 새엄마는 넋을 잃고 울고 있었고, 아무것도 모르는 내 여동생은 아버지의 시신 위에서 '아빠 아빠'라 부르며 기어다니고 있었다. 억장이 무너져내린다는 게 이런 기분이구나. 정신을 차릴 수 없었다. 얼마전 건강검진때도 큰 문제는 없는 걸로 나왔었는데... 40대 후반 남성들이 과로와 스트레스로 가끔 '심장마비'로 세상을 떠난다는 뉴스는 역시나 남의일로 생각했는데. 그날 내게 벌어졌다. 죄책감이 들었다. 내가 가정의 평화를 잘 지켜냈더라면... 10일장을 치렀다. 일주일동안 귀국준비를 하며 집에 빈소를 차렸고, 아버지의 시신은 경찰로 가서 검시를 받고 있었다. 한국으로 돌아와 정식으로 3일장을 치렀다. 그때부터 나는 친척댁에 몇년간 얹혀살았다. 처음에는 할아버지라도 계셨는데, 자식 먼저 보낸 슬픔에 금방 또 떠나셨다. 그나마 친척들이 '천사'였다. 할아버지 유산을 모아 내 교육비로 만들었고, 무사히 대학을 마쳤다. 할아버지는 내 동생과 나와 새엄마를 엮어서 새롭게 가정을 꾸려서 지내고 싶어하셨지만, 여의치 않았다. 대학때부터는 평탄했다. 군대도 다녀오고 취업도 했고 이제 결혼도 했다. 아직 애를 낳을 생각은 크게 없지만, 또 모르지 뭐. 아픈만큼 성숙해진다는 얘기. 글쎄 난 잘 모르겠다. 내가 그 일들을 겪고 정말로 성숙했었는지 회의적이다. 그런데 확실한 건 하나 있다. [성숙해지니 아프지 않더라]는 것이다. 누구나 가슴에 사연 한 무더기를 묻고 산다. 그 사연은 남들이 보기엔 별거 아니어도 그 사람한텐 큰 것일 수 있다. 중요한 건 그 아픔과 사연이 가시가 돼 남을 찔러서는 안된다는 것. 그런데 나는 그 가시가 가끔 세상을 향한다는 생각은 한다. 특유의 반골기질, 사회문제에 대한 관심. 관련이 있나 없나...잘 모르겠다. 가끔 와이프한테 그 가시가 표출되는 거 같아 미안하다. 이건 뭐 내가 반성하고 고쳐야겠지. 서로 사랑하며 살자는 말, 그런 거 난 별로 안 와닿는다. 하지만 하나 만큼은 자꾸 다짐하게 된다. 잘 지키지는 못하는 거 같지만. '내 상처로 남을 힘들게 하지는 말자. 즐겁게만 살아도 짧은 세상 아닌가. (껄껄)' ----------------------------- P.S. 지금은 대학도 졸업했을 동생은 20년 넘게 한 번도 보지못했다. 보고싶냐고? 솔직히 아니다. 뭐 같이 지낸 시간이 있어야 그립든가 말든가 하지...
