pgr에서 다음과 같은 글을 봤습니다. 하고싶은걸 하라고? ( http://www.pgr21.com/pb/pb.php?id=freedom&page=1&page_num=23&select_arrange=&desc=&sn=&ss=on&sc=on&keyword=&no=59650&category=&cmt=&bpw= ) 이 글을 읽고 댓글을 하나 썼습니다. 쓰다 보니 평소에 청소년들에게 해주고 싶었던 이야기이기도 해서 장문이 되어버렸네요. 홍차넷에서 비슷한 고민을 하는 분들이 있을것 같아 그곳에 단 댓글을 붙여넣어 봅니다. ******************************************* 마지막 학력고사 세대입니다만 님의 '주장'에 전혀 공감이 되지 않습니다. 오히려 님의 글 중 20대 시절의 저라면 100% 공감했을 내용이 있습니다. "지금 청년들은, 하고싶은게 뭔지 모르고, 딱히 하고싶은게 없다는게 제일 큰 문제다. 하고싶은걸 하라고? 난 하고싶은게 없는데? 내가 좋아하는게 뭔지 모르겠는데? 라는 질문이 바로 튀어나오는게 지금의 청년들인데, 90년대에나 먹힐만한 하고싶은걸 하란다. 난 그게 딱히 없고 내가 하고싶은게 뭔지 모르겠는데?" 제가 경험해 온 '국민학교-중학교-고등학교-대학교' 테크트리 내에서도 역시 무엇 하나 내가 해 보고 싶은 것을 할 여지를 주지 않았기 때문입니다. 그래서 서태지의 교실이데아에 그렇게 열광을 했었드랬죠. 님이 느끼는 그 취향의 부재와 그렇게 될 수밖에 없던 여건들, 그리고 20대의 제가 느꼈던 것과 정확히 일치하는 '길들여짐'이라는 표현으로 보아서도 님의 20대와 제 20대가 딱히 변한 것이 없다는 결론이 옳을 듯 합니다. 저와 제 친구들 역시 다들 님과 정확히 똑같은 고민을 하며 지냈던 것을 봐서는 이 결론은 거의 확실하다고 보고요. 그리고 당시에도 청년 멘토 역할을 하는 사람들이 있었고 그들도 자신이 하고 싶은 일을 하라고 역설했습니다. 하지만 님이 그러하듯 우리 역시 자신이 무엇을 하고 싶은지 전혀 알지 못했습니다. 졸업을 하고 기계적으로 취업 전선에 뛰어들어 취업을 하게 되면 그게 자신 앞에 주어진 일이기 때문에 그 일을 할 뿐이었고 그러다 맘에 드는 이성을 만나면 연애를 하고 결혼을 생각하지만 돈이 없어 결혼에 어려움을 겪었고 결혼 시기를 놓쳐 30대 후반에 결혼하는 경우도 많았습니다. 님이 하는 그러한 방황은 우리나라에서 수평적으로도 수직적으로도 결코 특이한 경험이 아니라 보편적인 경험입니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 소위 청년 멘토들이 그때나 지금이나 같은 메시지를 전하고 있다는 것은 그만한 이유가 있어서입니다. 제가 어려서부터 해왔던 고민들은 다음과 같습니다. - 어차피 죽을텐데 사람은 왜 사는가? (유치원 시절의 고민) - 나라는 존재의 의미는 무엇인가? (중학생 시절의 고민) - 왜 사는지 모르는데 왜 살아야 하는가? 왜 사는지 모르는 고통이 이렇게까지 심한데 차라리 죽는 게 낫지 않을까?(고등학생, 대학생 시절의 고민) - 왜 사는가? 그리고 어떻게 살 것인가? 왜 사는지를 알아야 어떻게 살아야 할지를 결정할 수 있을텐데... (대학 졸업 후의 고민) - 하고 싶은 일을 하면서 살면 행복할까? 그런데 내가 하고 싶은 것은 무엇일까? (대학 졸업 후의 고민) 그리고 이 고민들에 대한 답을 간신히 찾은 듯한 시기가 20대 후반이었고 고민을 말끔히 해소한 때가 30대 후반이었습니다. 지금은 영적, 정신적, 경제적 방황기를 충실하고 치열하게 거쳤기에 이 모든 물음들에 대한 나름의 답을, 최소한 제 자신에게는 자신있게 내놓을 수 있습니다. 지금의 제가 20대의 제 자신에게 충고를 하라고 한다면 이렇게 말할 것입니다. "무엇을 하려 하기 보다는 철저하게 자기 자신이 되어라. 자기 자신이 되는게 무엇인지 모르겠다면 아무리 사소한 것이라도 오로지 자신이 하고 싶은 것만을 하고 감히 그 무엇도 그 누구도 자신의 기쁨을 방해하는 것을 허용하지 말아라. 그러한 삶에 깨달음이 있고 구원이 있다." 문제는 자신이 무엇을 할 때 가슴이 뛰는지 모른다는 것인데 이것은 님의 말대로 충분한 경험을 하지 못했기 때문에 어떤 경험을 할 때 가슴이 뛰는지에 대한 정보가 없기 때문입니다. 그런데 자신이 무엇을 할 때 가슴이 뛰는지 모른다는 것은 자신이 누구인지 모른다는 것과 다르지 않습니다. 하지만 다행히도 우리는 누구나... 책을 읽을 때, 혹은 영화를 볼 때, 혹은 음악을 들을 때, 혹은 아이의 미소를 볼 때, 혹은 그녀의 사랑스런 귀밑 머리를 볼 때, 혹은 햇살이 눈부신 하늘을 볼 때, 혹은 뺨을 스치는 시원한 바람을 느낄 때, 혹은 총탄에 쓰러져 가는 누군가의 눈을 볼 때, 혹은 테러를 당해 죽은 부모 앞에서 발을 동동거리며 울부짓는 아이의 모습을 볼 때, 혹은 아동 성범죄자 뉴스를 볼 때, 혹은 생활고로 동반자살하는 가족의 소식을 들을 때, 혹은 해수면 상승에 대한 신문 기사를 접할 때 등등 삶의 순간 순간에서 그것들과 공명을 하는 순간이 있습니다. 바로 그 순간의 떨림이 자신이 누구인지에 대한 힌트이고 그 힌트를 그 어떤 보물보다도 소중하게 차곡차곡 간직해 둔다면 결국 자신이 누구인지 서서히 알아가게 됩니다. 자신을 알아가는 과정은 단번에 이루어지는 일이 아니며 오랜 기간이 소요되는 일입니다. 물론 그 과정에서 마음이 급해질 수는 있습니다. 하지만 그렇게 오랜 시간이 걸리는 것은 정말 다행한 일이라는 것, 그리고 더 나아가 커다란 축복이라는 것을 깨달을 필요가 있습니다. 자신이 그렇게 가벼운 존재가 아니라 그렇게 공을 들여야 할 정도로 굉장히 큰 존재라는 뜻이기 때문입니다. 그러니 서두르지 마셨으면 합니다. 저 또한 20대 때에는 삶의 의미를 몰라 미칠 것 같았고 죽고 싶었습니다. 어서 빨리 진리를 알고 싶었고 고통의 굴레에서 조금이라도 빨리 벗어나고 싶었습니다. 하지만 당시에도 어렴풋이 그 모든 과정이 나에게로 가는 길의 일부라고 느꼈습니다. 그리고 지금 돌아 보면 그 느낌이 맞았고 굳이 서두를 필요가 없었다고 느낍니다. 아마 님에게 누군가 "지금 당신이 겪는 그 모든 과정이 구도자에게 주어지는 축복"이라고 말한다면 그 사람의 혀를 뽑아버리고 싶을 정도로 분개할 것 같긴 하지만 저는 그 말에 전적으로 동의합니다. 제 체험이 그러하기 때문에. 이쯤에서 다시 분명히 할 점이 있습니다. 사실 님이 "내가 하고싶은게 뭔지 모르겠는데?"라며 느끼는 그 분노는... 아니 그 분노를 해결할 사람은... 다른 누구도 아닌 님 자신이라는 점입니다. 그리고 '내가 하고 싶은 것이 무엇인지 모르겠다'는 것은 '내가 누구인지 모르겠다'는 것과 같은 말이라는 것도 다시 한번 분명히 하고 싶습니다. 그렇기 때문에 그것은 다른 누구도 해 줄 수가 없는 일이며 온전히 자신의 과업일 수밖에 없는 것입니다. 물론 누구나 자신이 누구인지 깨달을 수 있는 교육 체계를 이미 구성해 놓았다면 좋았겠지만 인류의 '삶에 대한 인식의 깊이'는 불행하게도 그렇게 깊지 않습니다. 님이 느끼는 그러한 불만은 결국 인간의 인간 자신에 대한 깨달음이 깊지 못한 것에서 비롯된 것입니다. 인간은 얼마 전에야 간신히 천부인권을 천명했고 얼마 전에야 간신히 평등을 인간의 삶의 기저에 놓았고 얼마 전에야 간신히 평화의 길을 탐색하기 시작했고 얼마 전에서부터야 우리 중 일부가 간신히 배불리 먹을 수 있었고 불과 얼마 전에서부터야 간신히 더 고귀한 삶에 관심을 갖기 시작했을 뿐입니다. 그래서 누구나 자신에 대한 깨달음을 얻을 수 있도록 사회 시스템을 구성하는 일은 제가 해야할 일이자 님이 해야 할 일이고 우리의 후대가 계속해서 해야 할 일입니다. 우리의 과거 세대는 생존의 세대였고 우리는 생활의 세대에서 살고 있습니다. 우리 이후의 세대가 다시 생존의 세대가 될지 아니면 삶이라는 자기실현의 유희를 온전히 누리는 세대가 될지는 저와 님의 손에 달린 셈이죠. 그러니 지금의 그 불만은 잠시 내려 놓으시고, 다른 누군가에게 손가락질을 하고 싶은 마음도 잠시 접어 두시고 그저 님을 알아가는 길을 묵묵히 걸어가시길 권하고 싶습니다. ps. 진정한 삶은 안전지대를 벗어나는 것에서 시작된다. 가슴뛰는 삶을 살고 마음껏 사랑하며 기쁨이 이끄는 삶을 누리라. 그것이 삶의 목적이며 깨달음이고 구원이다. 20년 뒤, 당신은 했던 일보다 하지 않았던 일 때문에 더 실망할 것이다. 그러니 밧줄을 풀고 안전한 항구를 떠나라. 탐험하라, 꿈꾸라, 발견하라. * Toby님에 의해서 자유 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2015-07-14 00:58) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다. 별로 관련 없는 이야기일지도 모르겠지만.. 드래곤볼을 보면서 감동받은 장면 중 하나가 베지터가 초사이어인이 되는 순간이었는데요. 초사이어인이 되기 위한 요소로 <분노>해야 한다는 설정이 있는데 베지터는 \'자기 자신에게 분노하는 순간\' 초사이어인이 되었거든요. 참 베지터 답다고 생각했습니다. 세상이 워낙 화낼일이 많은 시절이긴 한데 냉정하게 생각하면 결국 자기 자신과 싸우며 자기 자신에게 분노할 수 있는 사람이 무언가를 이루어낼 수 있지 않은가 생각합니다.
