안녕하세요, 영길리(英吉利)국 어드메에서 박사과정을 하고 있는 기아트윈스라고합니다. 모국의 동지여러분께서 월급 훔쳐먹으며 국회방송 보느라 여념이 없으신 가운데 전 오랜만에 밥값을 했어요. 그거슨 신입생 면접, 두구두구둥. 1.개요 신입생 선발에는 여러가지 평가항목들이 있어요. 현재 제가 다니고있는 곳 기준으로 말씀드리자면 [수능 + 추천서 + 자소서 + 면접]인데, 추천서랑 자소서는 면접관들이 읽어보지도 않았고 (...) 그나마 수능은 그냥 A등급(한국기준 1등급 정도?)만 받으면 땡이니 실제로 모든 건 면접에서 판가름난다고 할 수 있어요. 지원자들을 교수 하나당 6~8명 정도로 맞춰서 배분하면 각 교수가 자기 파트너 (주로 자기가 지도하는 박사과정생 중 하나)랑 같이 2:1로 이 때 영 지원자들이 맘에 안들어서 자기 쿼터만큼 못뽑았으면 다른 교수에게 바로 전화해서 "님이 탈락시킨 애들 중에 좀 아깝다 싶은 애들 있으면 좀 이쪽으로 보내줘봐. 난 다 꽝이야." 라고 합니다. 그럼 걔들을 또 30분씩 면접을 봐서 뽑을까 말까 결정하지요. 그래서 어떤 지원자들은 그날 하루만 30분씩 세 번 털리기도하고 그러더라구요. 저랑 이야기한 친구들 보니까 막 긴장해서 손에 땀이 흥건하고 그러던데 개불쌍. 2. 어떻게 갈구는가 일단 면접 전에 학생들에게 뭔가를 줘요. 어떤 교수는 짧은 글을 나눠주고 그걸 읽고온 후에 거기에 대해 대화를 진행하는 식으로 면접을 보는 반면 다른 교수는 지원자 개인이 가장 관심 있는 "토픽"을 하나 골라오라고 시켜서 거기에 대해 이야기를 하기도 해요. 저나 제 지도교수 쌤이나 크게 보면 중국사 전공이라 얼라들한테 중국사에 관해서 아무거나 골라오라고 했더니 대개 대약진운동이니 문화대혁명이니 하는 걸 골라오더군요. 물론 얼라들이 뭘 골라오든... 탈탈 털립니다 ;ㅅ; 어쩌겠어요. 수준차이가 엄청 나는 걸요. 대개 자기들이 골라서 공부해온 역사적 사건에 대해서 이렇게 저렇게 설명을 하려고 하지만 시각이 단조롭고 서술이 뭉툭해요. 그런 부분이 나올 때마다 면접관은 '그거 정말 그래?' 라는 식으로 찌르고 들어가지요. 예를 들어, 어떤 친구가 중국의 고전들을 보면 중국인의 심성을 이해할 수 있다고 이야기하자 바로 '그럼 플라톤을 읽으면 유럽인의 심성을 이해할 수 있을까?' 라고 반문했고, '대약진운동의 실패로 중국 인민들은 마오를 불신하기 시작했고...'라고 이야기하자 '네가 광동성의 농촌에서 대약진운동의 실패를 경험한 농민이라고 생각해봐. 거기서부터 베이징까지 가는 것보다 로마에서 런던까지 가는 게 더 빠를걸? 맛폰도 인터넷도 없는 시대인데 과연 농민들은 마오가 이 일에 얼마만큼의 책임이 있는지 알고는 있었을까?' 라고 갈궜어요. 3. 왜 갈구는가 우리의 목표는 털어서 내다 버리는 게 아니라 신나게 턴 다음에 주워서 쓰는 거잖아요? 그래서 터는 와중에 계속해서 탈출구를 줘요. 대약진운동 운운한 친구에겐 불만의 주체가 실은 중국 공산당 최정상급 간부들이었고, 실제 농민들은 중앙은 보다는 지방정부에 대해 아주 강한 불만을 가지고 있었으며, 그래서 문화대혁명이 발생한 주요 원인은 마오에 대한 민중의 직접적 불만이라기보단 바로 공산당 정상층에서 발생한 내부갈등임을 자각하게끔 하려고 했어요. 중국 고전 이야기를 한 친구에겐 플라톤과 현대 서구인의 세계관 사이에 별 접점이 없으며, 있다해도 그것은 끽해야 19세기 이후에 발굴/재구성된 것임을 알게 하고 이와 비슷한 관점으로 중국 고전과 현대 중국인 간의 관계를 바라보게끔 하려고 했지요. 물론 두 후보 모두 이런 유도과정을 잘 따라오지 못하고 '우리의 민주주의에 관한 아이디어는 플라톤의 [국가]에서 유래한 것으로...' 같은 헛소리를 하다가 장렬히 탈락했지만요 ;ㅅ; 물론 탈출구를 잘 잡은 친구들도 있었어요. 한 친구는 청조의 '사실상' 마지막 지도자인 서태후에 대해서 조사해왔는데 서태후의 집권과정과 비판점에 대해서는 대략 알고 있었지만 그런 부분이 당시 세계 정세와 어떻게 연관되어있는지 (연합군의 북경점령->궁궐소실->이화원건설), 여기서 젠더문제는 어떻게 생각해볼 수 있는지 (왕조 몰락시 왕가의 여인 중 하나가 비난 몰빵을 맞는 현상) 등에 대해서는 잘 모르고 있었지요. 그래서 살살 유도를 했는데 민첩하고 유연하게 잘 따라오더라구요. 이 친구는 성격이 아주 좋고 말도 시원하게 잘해서 수능 성적에 조금 하자가 있었음에도 불구하고 반드시 뽑으려고 했어요. 다른 교수가 이러저러한 사정이 있어서 자기에게 우선권이 있다고 주장하는 바람에 그양반에게 뺏겨버렸지만요. 쌤이 무척 아쉬워하심. 4. 누가 붙는가 스펙 같은 건 별 의미가 없어요. 누구는 시골의 영세한 공립학교에서 오고 누구는 헉소리나는 무시무시한 사립학교에서 오지만 2:1로 30분간 압박축구를 하고 나면 밑천이 금방 드러나니까요. 어떤 친구는 실제로 집안이 무척 가난해서 이런저런 보조를 받아가며 영세한 동네 고등학교를 졸업했으며 수능성적조차 좋지 못했어요. 그런데 만나서 이야기해보니 실제로 매우 영민한 아이이며, 다른 환경에서 성장했으면 훨씬 좋은 성적을 냈을 것임이 분명해보였어요. 그 친구 면접이 끝난 후에 쌤이 하는 말이 "방금 30분간 걔가 똘똘한 학생처럼 보이려고 연기했던거라면 당장 오스카를 줘야해." 라더군요. 반면 어떤 학생 하나는 준비가 잘 되어있지만 실제로는 특별하지 않았어요. 면접의 다른 부분들은 무난하게 해냈지만 정작 "왜 중국학을 전공하려고 해?" 라는 물음에 제대로 답하지 못했어요. 뭔가 장황하게 이야기하긴 했는데 이건 그럴싸한 포장이요, 실제로는 그냥 우리 학교에 오고 싶은 것일 뿐이라는 게 보였어요. 쌤은 "방금 걔는 여기서 4년간 한자 왼다고 죽쑤느니 그냥 다른 데 가서 비즈니스나 공부하는 게 나을 것 같은데."라는 촌평을 남기고 "탈락!" 그런데 이런 거 저런 거 다 덮어 놓고 무조건 붙여야하는 천재도 있어요. 구사하는 언어의 수준이 황홀하고, 관심의 폭과 깊이가 경이적이며, 주제를 탐구하는 태도가 매우 분석적(analytical)이고, 이바닥에서 30년을 구른 교수가 작정하고 갈구려고 덤비는데도 때론 반문을 하거나 더 자세한 설명을 요구함으로써 순간순간 자신의 이해의 지평을 넓혀가더라구요. 스텝이 무슨 무하마드 알리인줄. 그 친구 면접 끝나고나서 제가 다 기가 죽어서 "쌤, 쟤 너무 무서워 (intimidating). 쟤랑 나랑 학부생자리 하나 놓고 경쟁하면 내가 질 거 같은데?" 라고 하니 쌤이 웃으면서 "어 나도 그렇게 생각해 낄낄." ㅠㅠ 립서비스로라도 '아냐, 난 그래도 널 뽑을 거야' 같은 걸 기대했는데. 매정한 양반.... 5. 특이 합격자 한 명이 자기는 한국문화 팬이라는 말을 했어요. 쌤은 그 중에 뭘 좋아하냐고 물었고 그친구는 최근에 봤던 [W]라는 한국 드라마 이야기를 했지요. 쌤은 대강 듣더니 "야 근데, 만화랑 현실을 오가는 설정 말야. 그거 너무 복잡하지 않니? 왜 그냥 이야기를 풀지 않고 같은 주제를 그렇게 판타지라는 형식을 빌려서 했을까? 구성을 복잡하게하면 시청자들이 이해하는 데 더 어려울 수도 있지 않겠어?"라는 거예요. 근데 어버버 대답을 잘 못하더라구요. "글쎄요, 그쪽이 더 재밌으니까?" 같은 말이나 하고. 쌤이 원했던 답은 실은 대개의 판타지는 현실의 반영이요 풍자다. 스타워즈는 배경만 우주SF지 실제론 죄다 미국 사회 이야기일 뿐이다. 판타지라는 껍데기를 쓰면 그렇지 않았을 때보다 더 자유롭게 무언가를 말하고 전달할 수 있는 가능성이 생긴다. 뭐 이런 거였어요. [W]가 그런 거랑은 거리가 먼 작품이어서 그랬는지 어쨌는지 이 친구는 이 질문에 발목이 잡혀서 거의 10~15분을 고생했어요. 그래서 쌤은 이 친구를 떨어뜨리는 쪽으로 거의 마음을 먹었지요. 그런데 면접 종료 3분이 남은 상황, 쌤이 추가로 할 질문이 없나 찾아보려고 이 친구 서류를 이리저리 들추다가 보니 수능과목으로 음악(Music)을 골랐더라구요. 그래서 음악 이야기나 해보라고 했더니 웬걸!? 기적이 일어났어요. 청산유수인거예요. 본인이 피아노를 오래 쳤는데 특히 쇼스타코비치 같은 걸 좋아한대요. 그래서 쇼스타코비치 이야기를 하는데 이해도가 아주 좋았어요. 자신이 그의 곡들을 치면서 그 속에서 작곡가의 스탈린주의에 대한 반감을 어떻게 느꼈는지 이렇게저렇게 설명을 하는데 참 괜찮더라구요. 이 친구는 중국사에 대한 식견도 높지 않았고, 한국 드라마 분석에도 실패했는데, 쇼스타코비치 하나로 발전가능성을 인정받고 최종적으로 붙어버렸어요. 사실 면접 내내 갈굼도 많이 당하고 본인 스스로도 자기가 헤맨 걸 알고서 죄송하다는 말을 수차례 하고 갔는데, 그래서 필시 떨어졌을 거라고 집에서 울고있을 것 같은데, 합격통보 받으면 얼마나 기뻐할른지 모르겠어요. 내년에 만나면 물어보려구요 ㅎㅎ 6. 그리고... 지원자 8명 중 7명이 여자였고, 이 중 4명이 K-Pop 팬이었어요. 그것도 그냥 팬 수준이 아니라 자기 지원서에 "한국빠가 된 것이 중국학에 관심을 갖게 된 중요한 원인이었다"는 식으로 구체적으로 쓸 만큼 열혈 팬이었던 거예요. 한글을 써보라는 요구에 자신있게 종이에 "안녕하세요 XXX입니다. 만나서 반가워요."라고 거침없이 써내려가는 수준. 그럴 때마다 쌤은 절 가리키면서 ["야야, 얘도 코리안이다? 근데 너네가 좋아하는 보이밴드처럼 안 생겼지? 이쪽이 현실이야 ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ"] 이러면서 놀림. 지원자들도 그냥 막 웃음.  니네 그러는 거 아냐.... 다 두고보자 * 수박이두통에게보린님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2016-12-19 09:33) * 관리사유 : 추천 게시판으로 복사합니다. 타임라인에 계속 응가 이야기만 있어서 걱정했는데..과연 똥싸느라 늦었지만 그에 상응하는 글을 내놓으시는 군요.
옛말에 신언서판이라는 말이 있는데 사실 시험..그러니까 서판으로만 인재를 뽑어왔던 것이 그동안의 대학...그리고 전문가 집단 사회였죠. 바뀔 필요가 있다고 봅니다. 고시 시험을 아직도 손글씨로 본다는 것을 보고 놀랐어요.
