뭔가 나무위키, 위키피디아 요약글이 될 것 같지만.. 그래도 시작했으니 끝을내보겠습니다 ㅠㅠ #할로윈의_기원 10월 31일은 할로윈이죠. 미국에선 어둑어둑해지면 동네 아이들이 각종 코스튬을 차려입고 사탕을 담을 바구니나 베겟커버(=쌀포대 같은 용도) 하나씩 들고 나와 삼삼오오 모여 이웃집에 "Trick or Treat!" (직역: 저주 아님 사탕!! -> 의역: 사탕주면 저주안하지(...)/안잡아먹지!) 라고 인사를하며 돌아다니고 사탕을 한무더기 받아오는 날이에요.  이런 문화의 역사적 배경은... 아주 대충 이야기 하자면 서유럽권이 카톨릭화 되는 와중에 남아있던 각 문화권의 토속신앙들과 짬뽕되면서 나온 것이라고 하네요. 특히 고대 켈트족이 겨울시작될때에 (켈트족은 그때를 새해라 여겼대요) 죽은 자들과 영혼을 기리는 풍습이 있었는데, 당시 교황이 원래 5월에 있었던 모든 성인의 날을 11월로 옮기면서 켈트족 잔칫날과 맞물려 카톨릭+민속신앙이 짬뽕되며 나온 결과라고 해요. 그래서인지 영미권에서 더 흥하는 명절(?) 이기도 하고요. 늙은호박의 속을 파내고 조각해서 불 켜놓는 Jack O' Lantern 잭오랜턴도 원래 아일랜드 지방에선 순무로 만든거였다고 하네요. 미국으로 넘어온 이민자들이 미국엔 순무보다 호박이 흔해서 호박을 쓰게되었답니다.   할로윈은 영어로 Halloween이라고 하는데요, 이 단어의 기원으로 거슬러 올라가보면 Halloween - Hallowe'en - Hallow e'en - Hallow even(ing) - Hallow's eve 이렇게 됩니다. 크리스마스 이브 = 크리스마스 전날밤인 것 처럼, 해당날짜보다는 그 다음날의 의미를 강조하는 날인데요. 카톨릭에서는 11월 1일, 할로윈 다음날을 All Saints' Day 모든 성인의 축일로, 특정한 하루 기념일이 없는 성인들 까지도 모두 기리는 날입니다. Hallow 라는 단어도, Saint(성자) 와 동일한 의미를 가진 단어이구요. 해리포터 시리즈의 7번째 책 제목이 "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" 인데, 한국어로는 "해리포터와 죽음의 성물"로 번역이 잘 되었습니다. 명사로서의 Hallow는 성스러운 사람 또는 물건을 지칭하는 단어라고 이해하시면 되겠습니다. 멕시코의 "망자의 날"이라는 명절은 할로윈의 그로테스크함(?)과 카톨릭의 축일의 기막힌 조화를 엿볼 수 있는 날이에요. 이 명절은 원래 같은 이름을 가진 스페인의 봄명절(?)에서 왔다고 하는데요, 멕시코에서는 10월 31일부터 11월 2일까지 지내는 명절로 변했어요. 11월 2일은 All Souls' Day라고 돌아가신 분들을 기리는 카톨릭 축일이라고 해요. 여기도 아즈텍 문화와 카톨릭이 짬뽕된 점이 있다고 합니다. 제가 이 명절에 흥미를 갖게된 계기는, 이 사람들은 참 해골을 좋아하더라는 것이에요. 아래 링크는 "dia de muertos"로 구글 이미지 서치를 한 것이에요. 각종 해골 분장과 제단, 그리고 해골기념품 등등을 볼 수 있어요... 무서움 주의 혐오주의!!!! 대중매체에서는 007 스펙터의 오프닝 씬으로 나왔죠!  우리는 해골이나 죽음을 떠올리게 하는 심볼들은 혐오감을 준다고 생각하는데 이 사람들은 돌아가신 분들을 위한 추모의 자리/잔치에 해골을 대놓고 가져와서(?) 참 신기하다 생각했어요. 해골과 남은뼈들을 장식하는 풍습은 16-17세기 카톨릭 역사에서 찾아볼 수 있어요. 당시 로마의 카타콤(지하무덤)이 발견되면서 수만 구의 시체가 발견되었는데, 이 시체들이 실제 예수가 존재했고 기독교 초기의 성인들의 시대인 1-3세기때의 것들이라고 추측되면서 이들이 성인/순교자들이구나!! 라며 교황청이 유럽 각처의 성당들한테 카타콤의 유골들을 팔아넘겼다고 해요. 그래서 성인의 유골을 모셔온 성당의 신부님과 수녀님들이 성인을 추존하기위해 장식을 덧씌우고, 마을의 부자들도 복을 바라면서 유골을 장식할 각종 금과 보석을 기부했대요. 그 이후 독일의 마틴 루터로부터 청교도/개신교 바람이 불면서 이 휘황찬란한 해골들도 모두 우상이다!! 라고 규정되면서 대부분 파손되었다네요. 이런 성인의 유골들을 찾아다닌 미술역사학자 Paul Koudounaris가 찾은 몇가지 유골의 사진과 그 이야기를 아래 링크에서 보실 수 있어요. 영어주의!!! 그리고 사진들이 매우 섬뜩하니 또다시 혐오주의!!! 이 기사는 사실 몇년전에 제가 우연히 보고 헐... 이게뭐야;;; 했었는데.. 할로윈을 생각하다보니 의식의 흐름이 이 곳으로 인도했네요 저번에 클래식시리즈-김연아 글을 쓰면서 죽음의무도를 보고 "오 이거는 할로윈때 써야지" 하고 죽음의 무도의 관한 역사/문화 글들을 보다보니 해골이 자주보여서 dia de muertos가 생각났고 또 화려한 해골을 보니 이 기사가 생각난... 참으로 난잡한 의식의 흐름에 함께해주셔서 감사합니다;; ㅋㅋㅋㅋ 유럽역사와 카톨릭/기독교의 역사는 역잘알 분에게 넘기고 저는 이만 이 비루하고 정신없는 글을 마치겠습니다..... * 수박이두통에게보린님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2016-11-14 09:30) * 관리사유 : 추천 게시판으로 복사합니다.
