일본의 두 번째 노벨문학상 수상자 오에 겐자부로의 이름은 수상 직후 1990년대 말에 고려원에서 번역 전집을 내면서 한국에 널리 알려지기 시작했습니다. (네, <영웅문>을 냈던 그 고려원입니다. 고려원은 이 두 번역 사업만으로도 역사에 남을 만한 출판사지요). 안타깝게도 이 소설가의 문체가 간명하지 않아 번역 과정을 견디지 못하고 소실되는 부분들이 많다고 합니다. 저도 몇 권을 집에 가지고 있지만 독해가 쉽지 않아요. 오에의 에세이는 읽기가 훨씬 낫습니다. '왜 아이들은 학교에 가지 않으면 안 되는가'는 오에의 에세이 중에서도 퍽 간명하고 아름다운 글입니다. 타겟 독자가 아이들인데, 아이를 키우는 부모로서 자신의 교육에 대한 생각을 아이들에게 들려주듯이 쓴 글입니다. 어른의 젠 체하는 느낌('우리 때는 지금과 달라서 말이죠...' 류)이나 아이들에게 아부하는 느낌('여러분은 미래의 희망입니다...'류)이 전혀 없다는 점, 힘을 빼고 친절하게 하나하나 설명하면서도 진지함과 긴장감이 살아 있는 점이 놀랍습니다. 이 에세이는 <'나의 나무' 아래서>(까치)에 실려 있습니다. 번역은 그다지 매끄럽지 않지만 무난하게 읽을 수 있어요. 에세이의 첫 도입부는 이렇습니다. [왜 아이들은 학교에 가지 않으면 안 되는가? 나는 지금까지 인생에서 두 번 이 문제에 대해서 생각해보았습니다. 왜 아이들은 학교에 가지 않으면 안 되는가. 중요한 문제는 고통스럽더라도 골똘히 생각해야 합니다. 게다가 그렇게 하는 것은 좋은 일입니다. 만일 문제가 완전히 해결되지 못했다고 하더라도, 골똘히 생각할 시간을 가지는 것은 뒷날 그 일을 회상할 때마다 그 자체가 의미있었다는 것을 알게 될 것입니다. ] 왜 노벨문학상 수상자가 이런 문제에 대해서 어린 독자들을 타겟으로 글을 썼는가 하면, 출판사의 상술이라고 생각할 수도 있겠지만, 좀 긴 사연이 있습니다. 1990년대 후반에 오에 겐자부로는 노벨상을 받고 난 뒤라 당연히 여러 강연이나 초빙 프로그램에 불려다니고 있었습니다. 1999년 베를린 자유대학에서 초빙을 받아 독일로 갔을 때, 그는 베를린의 일본인 교포사회와도 인연을 맺게 됩니다. 일본인 부모들은 오에 겐자부로에게 일인학교에 한번 나와서 외국에서 일어를 배우고 있는 어린아이들을 위해 강연을 해주었으면 하는 소망을 전했습니다. 그런데 오에는 이에 대해 역제안을 했습니다. '어느날 갑자기 잘 모르는 어른이 찾아와서 강연을 해준다고 아이들이 재미있어할까요? 이야기를 하러 오는 사람도 전혀 알지 못하는 아이들 앞에서 무엇을 실마리 삼아 이야기해야 좋을지 알 수 없습니다.' 오에의 제안은 '빨간펜 선생님'이 되어주겠다는 것이었습니다. 자신의 이야기를 들으러 오는 아이들은 미리 작문을 써서 제출할 것, 작문의 주제는 '독일인과 일본인의 비교'로 할 것, 그러면 자신이 빨간 만년필로 작문 하나하나를 다듬어 교정해 주겠다, 그리고 아이들의 노고에 보답하는 의미로 오에 자신도 작문을 하나 해서 가져오겠다는 것이었습니다. 그때 오에가 써서 읽은 작문이 바로 '왜 아이들은 학교에 가지 않으면 안 되는가'라는 에세이입니다. 일인학교 학부모들은 나중에 이 원고들을 모아 오에가 어디를 어떻게 교정했는지 알아볼 수 있는 특별한 인쇄 방식을 써서 작문집을 펴냈다고 합니다. 노벨문학상 수상자가 아이들의 서툰 작문을 교정하는 와중에 쓴 에세이라는 독특한 배경을 제쳐 두더라도, '왜 아이들은...'은 그 자체로 퍽 인상적인 글입니다. 저도 어렸을 때 학교에 가기 싫을 때마다 이런 질문을 던졌고, 대학 때도 마찬가지고, 직장에 다니면서도 그랬습니다. 왜 그 모든 모순과 고통에도 불구하고 나는 학교에, 대학에, 노동시장에 가지 않으면 안 되는가? 이런 삶을 유지하는 것에 무슨 의미가 있는가? 오에는 이에 대해 철학적이거나 사회과학적인 답변을 하지 않습니다. 작가들은 비유로 이야기하죠. 그는 두 가지 예를 듭니다. 첫 번째 예는 열 살짜리 오에의 이야기입니다. 1945년 일본의 패전은 산골 초딩 오에의 삶에도 대격변을 가져왔습니다. 여름까지만 해도 학교 선생님들은 '천황은 신이다' '미국인은 귀신 짐승이다'라고 말했는데 가을이 오자 아무렇지도 않게 완전히 반대되는 말을 하기 시작했습니다. '천황은 인간이다' '미국은 우리 친구다'라고 말이죠. 지금까지 선생님들이 가르친 것은 잘못된 것이었으니 반성한다는 말도 전혀 없었습니다. 귀신이라 불리던 미군 병사들이 지프를 타고 산골에 들어오자 학생들더러 길가에 서서 성조기를 흔들라고 했습니다. 오에의 동무들은 분위기에 들떠서 신나게 뛰어나가 헬로, 헬로를 외쳤지만 마음 속 깊이 불신을 품은 오에는 대열을 빠져나가 홀로 산 속으로 들어가서 울었습니다. 그때부터 오에는 등교거부에 돌입합니다. 오에네 집안은 숲을 관리하는 집안이었습니다. 집에는 두꺼운 식물도감이 있어서 어린 오에는 그 책을 탐독하고 있었습니다. 더 이상 학교에 가지 않고 숲속에서 혼자 식물도감을 가지고 공부하면 어른이 되어서도 밥은 벌어 먹고 살 수 있을 거라고 생각했습니다. 어차피 학교에는 오에의 식물오덕적인 취미를 알아주는 사람도 없었고, 자기가 좋아하는 것과는 아무 상관없는 것들만 공부해야 할 뿐이라고 생각했지요. 학교에 가는 척하면서 산으로 내빼는 일과를 한 달가량 계속하던 중, 어느 날 폭우가 내려 오에는 산속에 고립되고 말았습니다. 의식을 잃고 나무 아래 쓰러진 채 이틀이 지나 소방수들에게 구출되었을 때 의사는 살 가망이 없다고 했습니다. 오에는 자기가 죽는 거냐고 엄마에게 물어봅니다. 엄마는 아니라고 하지요. 오에는 의사 선생님의 말씀을 들었다고, 내가 죽는 게 사실이 아니냐고 물어봅니다. 그러자 엄마는 의사의 말을 부정하지도 긍정하지도 않고, 놀라운 철학적 대답을 합니다. "만약 네가 죽더라도 내가 또다시 널 낳아줄 테니까 걱정하지 마." "...그치만 그 아이는 지금 죽는 아와는 다른 아이가 아닐까?" "아니야 똑같아. 네가 이제껏 보고 듣고 읽은 것, 네가 해왔던 일들 모두를 새로운 너에게 이야기해 줄 거야... 그러면 두 아이는 완전히 똑같아지는 거야." 그 뒤 다행히 살아난 오에는 겨울쯤부터 학교에 다시 다니기 시작했습니다. 오에는 가끔 가다 이런 생각을 하곤 했다고 합니다. 지금 여기 있는 나는 혹시 죽고 나서 엄마가 새로 낳아준 아이가 아닐까? 이 교실이나 운동장에 있는 아이들은 모두 어른이 되지 못하고 죽은 아이들을 대신하고 있는 것이 아닐까? 우리들은 죽은 아이들이 가졌던 언어를 완전히 우리 것으로 만들기 위해 지금 여기 학교에 와 있는 것이 아닐까? 숲속에서 식물도감을 읽고 나무를 공부하는 것만으로는 (가업을 이어 아버지를 대신할 수는 있겠지만) 죽은 아이들을 대신할 수 없는 거겠지, 그렇기 때문에...아마도...?  1967년 30대 초반의 오에 겐자부로 두 번째 예는 자폐증을 가진 장남 히카리에 관한 일화입니다. 오에는 이 아이에 관해 너무나 많은 글을 썼기 때문에, 오에 겐자부로 하면 히카리를 먼저 떠올리는 독자들도 있어요. 히카리는 태어날 때부터 뇌에 장애가 있어서 오랫동안 말을 하지 못했습니다. 대신 음악에 민감해서 인간의 말보다 새 소리를 더 잘 식별했다고 합니다. 일곱 살이 되자 히카리는 장애인을 위한 특수학급에 들어갔습니다. 늘 큰 소리를 지르는 아이들, 가만히 앉아 있지 못하고 돌아다니며 기물을 넘어뜨리곤 하는 아이들이 있었습니다. 오에가 창문으로 들여다보면 히카리는 언제나 두 귀를 두 손으로 틀어막은 채 온몸을 굳히고 있었다고 합니다. 오에는 또다시 '왜 아이들은 학교에 가지 않으면 안 되는가' 하는 물음에 부딪힙니다. 히카리는 왜 꼭 학교에 가야 하는가? 나와 아내와 함께 셋이서 숲속으로 들어가 집을 짓고 들새의 노래를 들으며 살면 안 될까? 그렇게 사는 게 더 행복하지 않은가? 이 문제를 해소한 것은 오에가 아니라 히카리 자신이었습니다. 히카리는 교실에서 자기와 똑같이 소음을 싫어하는 아이를 하나 발견하여, 둘이 언제나 교실 구석에서 손을 꼭 잡고 가만히 앉아 있었다고 합니다. 한 손은 친구의 손을 잡고, 다른 한 손은 귀를 틀어막고 있었겠죠. 그렇게 1년이 지나자 히카리는 새 소리보다 인간의 음악을 통하는 편이 친구와 좀더 친하게 지낼 수 있는 방법이라는 것을 알게 되었고, 음악에 대한 정보와 감상을 조용히 나누며 두 아이는 상급학교로 함께 진학했습니다. 이윽고 고등학교 3년이 지나자 더 이상 장애인을 위한 상급 학교가 없었습니다. 더 이상 학교에 나오지 않아도 된다는 선생님의 설명에 납득이 가지 않은 두 아이는 나름의 방식으로 놀라움과 저항을 표명합니다. "이상한데...." 히카리가 말하자 친구도 마음을 담아서 말했습니다. "이상한데..." 이 아이들은, '왜 아이들은 학교에 가지 않으면 안 되는가"라는 물음에 대해서 "왜 (어떤) 아이들은 학교에 가면 안 되는가"라는 역질문을 던진 셈입니다. 작곡가 오에 히카리가 만든 음악. # 독일 일인학교의 일본인 아이들이 오에의 글에 감동을 받았다는 증거는 없습니다. 부모들이 감동받은 증거는 있지만요. 어차피 꼰대의 모호한 말.. 하지만 오에 같은 사람들은 동료 꼰대들에게는 적어도 약간의 경각심을 줍니다. 아이들에겐 구제 불가능한 꼰대와 가능한 꼰대를 식별하고 선택적으로 연대할 줄 아는 능력이 필요할지도 모릅니다. 오에의 빨간펜 선생님 시도는 저에게는 지식인이 수행할 수 있는 하나의 실천으로서 감동적이었습니다. # 왜 우리는 이러한 고통을 감내하면서 ...하지 않으면 안 되는가? 라는 질문에 대한 오에의 결론은 썩 개운치는 않습니다. 결국은 해답이 없어요. 하나의 당위(학교에 가야 한다)를 또 다른 당위(죽은 아이를 대신한다, 타인과 이어진다)로 덮어버린 셈이랄까요. 어떤 어른들은 모순투성이 학교를 그만두라고 말할 것입니다. 어떤 아이들은 학교 자퇴를 하나의 운동으로 만들고자 합니다. 왕따라든가 학교가 너무나 큰 고통이 되어서 도저히 다닐 수 없는 아이들도 있습니다. 그런 사람들이 보기에 오에는 현실타협적인 보수주의자로 보일지도 몰라요. # 하지만 저는, 아이는 없지만, 아이가 있다면 학교에 꼭 보냈을 겁니다. 아이가 학교에 가기 싫다고 한다면 온갖 수단을 동원해서 꼬드겼을 거 같아요. 1년 정도 휴학을 시켜 준다든가 하는 방법도 있겠죠. 왜 아이들은 학교에 가지 않으면 안 되는가, 라고 아이가 묻는다면, 저는 이렇게 답할 것 같습니다. "아이들이 부모를 대신해 살지 않기 위해서, 부모처럼 살지 않기 위해서." 근대의 학교 제도는 애당초 국가가 부모로부터 아이를 빼앗기 위해 만든 것입니다. 그냥 내버려두면 부모처럼 살아가게 될 아이들을 데려다가 다른 목적에 봉사하는 인간으로 개조하기 위해 만들어진 제도지요. 과거의 부모들은 학교가 아이의 계급상승을 위한 제도라고 생각했고, 현재의 부모들은 학교를 아이의 계급하락을 경고하는 알리미 정도로 생각하고 있는 것 같습니다. 하지만 개인의 성장을 위해 학교의 가장 중요한 역할이 있다면 그것은 아이를 부모에게서 떼어놓는 것이라고, 아이에게 부모를 상대화시킬 수 있는 능력을 키워주는 것이라고, 만일 학교라는 제도 이외에 다른 어떤 대안적인 길을 선택한다면 그런 역할을 수행할 수 있는 길이어야 한다고 생각해요. 그 격리 속에서 가능성이 생겨나기도 합니다. 어린 오에 겐자부로가 아버지의 가업 대신 가상의 죽은 아이를 대신하는 삶을 받아들인 것처럼, 히카리가 아버지의 다소 퇴행적인 질문에 대해 스스로의 답을 찾은 것처럼. # 책에는 이 에세이 말고도 재미있는 이야기들이 많습니다. 나름 스테디셀러로 2001년에 나온 책이 아직도 팔리고 있네요. 하지만 아이들에게 권하지는 않습니다. 제 주변에서 이 책을 읽혀본 결과 아이들은 다 지겨워 죽을려고 했다는. * 수박이두통에게보린님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2016-04-17 21:08) * 관리사유 : 추천 게시판으로 복사합니다.
