인터넷의 초창기에 웹은 많이 사용되고 있지 않았습니다. '무슨소리야? 인터넷이랑 웹이랑 똑같은 말 아냐?'라고 생각하실 수도 있을텐데요. 원래 인터넷은 컴퓨터들간의 연결이란 의미로 사용되었습니다. 그래서 인터넷의 역사를 따지면 1960~70 년대부터 시작하지요. 반면에 우리가 사용하고 있는 www(World wide web)은 팀 버너스리에 의해 90년대 초반에 만들어졌습니다. 초창기에는 웹은 사람들에게 주목받는 기술은 아니었습니다. 당시에는 웹서핑도 키보드를 이용해서 했고, 웹은 텍스트 사이에 하이퍼링크가 걸린 것에 불과했지요. 하지만 미국 NCSA에서 계약직으로 근무하던 마크 앤드리슨이 Mosaic(모자익)이라는 프로그램을 만들면서 대중화되기 시작했습니다. 모자익은 최초의 웹 브라우저입니다. 모자익의 등장을 통해 웹은 대중화되기 시작했습니다. 하지만 NCSA는 모자익의 개발에 대해 간섭하기 시작했고, 이에 깊은 빡침을 느낀 마크 앤드리슨은 NCSA를 떠납니다. 다시는 웹브라우저를 만들지 않겠다고 다짐했던 마크에게 찾아온 짐 클라크라는 성공한 사업가의 권유로 마크는 NCSA의 모자익팀 전체를 데리고 실리콘밸리로 향합니다. 모자익을 없애버릴 새 브라우저를 만들겠다는 다짐으로 시작했던 프로젝트의 이름은 Mozilla였는데요. Mozaic Killer라는 뜻을 담은 Mozaic과 Godzilla의 합성어입니다. 그렇게해서 새롭게 탄생한 브라우저가 넷스케이프입니다. 넷스케이프와 함께 웹은 더욱 성장하여 성숙기를 맞았으나 상업용 브라우저로 포지셔닝하던 넷스케이프 앞에 MS의 무료 번들 프로그램인 Internet Explorer가 나타나면서 넷스케이프의 시대는 저물고 맙니다. 2003년 넷스케이프를 인수했던 AOL이 개발팀을 해체하는 것을 계기로 해당 인력들 중심의 모질라 재단이 설립되었으며, 모질라 재단은 Firefox를 만들게 됩니다. 반면, 웹의 발전을 도모하고 MS를 견제하기 위해 비영리 재단이었던 모질라를 꾸준하게 지원하던 구글은 2008년에 자체 개발한 Chrome을 깜짝 공개합니다. 크롬은 Apple이 개발한 오픈소스 브라우저 엔진인 Webkit을 탑재하여 개발 되었습니다. 그리고 현재는 구글의 크롬이 세계에서 가장 많이 사용되는 브라우저가 되었지요. * 수박이두통에게보린님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2016-04-10 16:36) * 관리사유 : 추천 게시판으로 복사합니다.
