도영 2년만에 티비 라이센스를 사서 요즘 한참 티비보는 재미를 붙였어요. 영국은 기본 채널들을 보려고 해도 연간 145파운드나 하는 티비 라이센스를 사야만 볼 수 있거든요. 추꾸채널 같은 건....어휴... 비싸서 꿈도 못꾸지요. 서민들은 그냥 기본 라이센스만 사서 BBC류 채널들 좀 보고 추꾸는 꼭 보고픈 날 동네 펍에 가서 술마시면서 본답니다. 물론 집에서 티비를 본대도 결국 애들이 보는 걸 옆에서 조금씩 같이 보는 정도에요. 어른 채널을 틀거나 하면 난리가 나거든요. 헌데 BBC의 유아동 채널, 즉 영국의 EBS 유아동 채널에 해당하는 CBeebies를 보다보니 재밌는 점이 보였어요. 0세부터 보는 티비 채널에서부터 정치적 올바름(political correctness)을 지키기 위해 대단히 노력하고 있더라구요. 예컨대,  이거 아이들 축구교실 같은 프로그램인데요, 정치적 올바름을 향한 집념이 느껴지시나요? 선생님은 흑인 여성, 학생들은 좌측부터 남아시아계 남성, 동아시아계 여성, 남아시아계 여성(남미계?), 서유럽계 여성, 서유럽계 남성, 아프리카계 남성 이에요. 세상에 추꾸교실인데 선생님이 여성인 걸로도 모자라서 학생들 간의 성비를 남녀 5:5로 칼같이 맞췄어요. 인종이야 말 할 것도 없구요.  이건 Balamory 라는 어.. 일종의 어린이 시트콤이에요. 배경은 스코틀랜드 변방의 어느 섬마을이고 그래서 다들 스코티시를 써요. 자막 없인 못알아 먹겠다능... 그런데 저 춥고 벽진 섬동네에 흑인이 무려 둘이나 나오고 그 중 하나 (우하단 여성)는 준 주연급이에요. 주연은 가운데 녹색 재킷을 입은 여성이구요. 또 좌측에 보시면 휠체어를 탄 출연자도 보여요(!) 성별로 따져봐도 여성이 더 많군요.  하지만 진짜 킹왕짱 케이스는 바로 이분. Cerrie Burnell 이라고, 나면서부터 오른 팔이 없는 배우에요. Discover and Do 라는 프로그램과 The Bed time Hour 두 개를 2009년부터 맡고있어요. 시비비즈는 오후 6시가 되면 애들 자라고 알아서 방종하는데 그 방종할 때 해주는 프로그램이 베드타임 아워에요. 이분 첫 등장 때 시청자들로부터 약간의 항의를 받았지만 그보다 훨씬 큰 열렬한 지지를 받고 아직까지 말짱히 일하고 있답니다.  하나 더 보고 갈까요? 영국의 뽀로로, Peppa Pig 에요. 요즘은 시즌 종료되서 안하지만 그래도 단연코 영국을 대표하는 아동 프로그램입니다. 주인공인 페파 (우하단의 돼지)네 가족 및 동물친구들의 이야기에요. 여기서 남자들은 몸이 원형, 여자들은 드레스로 표현되요. (그것도 성차별 아니냐라면 할 말은 없지만,) 일단 위 사진에서 남성역과 여성역 캐릭터의 수를 한 번 세 보시겠어요? (뒤의 공룡들은 배경이니 제외) 정답: 애들은 여자가 하나 더 많고 어른은 남자가 하나 더 많아서 결론은 5:5 소오름..... 페파 피그의 정치적 올바름은 파면 팔수록 더 나와요. 토끼 가족이 새로 애를 낳았는데 남/녀 쌍둥이라든가, 누구는 이름이 Pedro고(스페인계) 누구는 Didier라든가 (드로그바!?) 등등. 이런 걸 보고 흥이 나서 그럼 EBS의 유아동 프로그램은 어떨까 하고 떨리는 마음으로 확인해보았어요. CBeebies도 일요일 걸로 했으니까 어디 EBS 유아동 채널도 일요일 편성표를 한 번...  위의 두 편은 뭔지 모르겠지만 아무래도 부모들 보라는 프로그램 같고 애들 것 같진 않아서 패스. 뽀로로와 타요는 모두 남자가 주인공이고 여자 캐릭터가 매우 드물지요. 뽀로로, 에디, 포비, 해리, 크롱, 통통 vs 루피, 패티 (6:2) 타요, 로기, 가니 vs 라니 (3:1)  로보카 폴리나 코코몽 역시 여자 캐릭터가 매우 드물며 남자가 주인공이에요. 성비계산은 귀찮아서 패스.  계속해서 이어지는 코코몽/뽀로로/타요 오후에도 코코몽/뽀로로/타요  저녁 8시 이후는 엄마아빠용 프로그램인가봐요. 그래서 패스. .... [ :( ] 뽀로로나 타요나 코코몽이나 로보카 폴리, 그리고 소개되진 않았지만 카봇이나 캐니멀 등 다른 아동용 프로그램들도 전부 다 남성이 주인공이며 출연진간 성비도 3:1 즈음으로 남성이 많아요. 이 남성 캐릭터들은 놀이를 주도하고 늘 활기차고 모험을 떠나고 무슨 일이 생기거든 해결사로 나서요. 주인공이죠. 아이들 시청자의 절반은 여자아이들이잖아요. 그 아이들은 분명 여성 캐릭터가 주인공일 때 더 감정이입을 할 게 분명해요. BBC에서 방영되는 어린이 프로그램이 PC함에 매우 섬세하게 신경 쓴다는 사실이 놀랍기도 하고 놀랍지 않기도 하고 그렇네요. 미국과 문화적 동질성이 큰 영국 말고 다른 유럽에서는 어떤가 궁금하군요. 디즈니에서 만드는 최근 애니메이션들은 남자가 왕자고 여자가 공주인 그동안의 틀에서 벗어나서, 여자를 주인공으로 하는 것들이 많은 것 같아요. TV 시리즈는 이렇게까지 섬세한 가 모르겠지만요.

BBC에서는 인권 감수성에 섬세함에 놀라고, EBS에서는 아이들의 사회적 역할을 발달시키는데 도움이 되는 프로그램이 전멸한 상태라는데 놀라고 그렇네요. 작년쯤에 시세미 스트리트에서 하우스 오브 카드 패러디하는 것보고 진짜 웃겼는데 한국에서도 그런 프로그램 있으면 좋을텐데 아쉬워요.
