영화 <레버넌트: 죽음에서 돌아온 자>, 소설 <불을 지피다>에 관한 스포일러가 있습니다.  <레버넌트>를 보기 전에 줄거리를 요약한 기사를 읽고서 '서바이벌 장르로군, 서바이벌 재밌지...' 하고 머리에 떠오른 것이 소설가 잭 런던의 <클론다이크> 시리즈였습니다. 1890년대 알래스카와 접한 캐나다 유콘 주의 클론다이크 지역에서 황금이 발견되자 10만 명에 달하는 채굴꾼들이 몰려들어 골드러시를 이루었던 사건을 배경으로 집필한 소설 연작들입니다. 잭 런던도 채굴꾼들 중 한 명으로 참가했지만 금은 한 톨도 캐지 못했다네요. 물론 1820년대 루이지애나 매입 영토(현 다코타 주)에서 벌어진 덫 사냥꾼들의 이야기를 소재로 한 <레버넌트>의 역사적 배경과는 거리가 있습니다만, 냉혹한 자연, 무심한 동물들, 원주민과 백인의 갈등, 바닥까지 노출되는 인간성 같은 기본 주제들은 변함이 없습니다. 이번에 영화를 보고 나서 다시 클론다이크 단편 하나를 읽었어요. <불을 지피다 To Build a Fire>(1908)라는 단편인데 <불을 지피다>(이한중 역, 한겨레출판 2012)에 실려 있습니다. 소설의 줄거리는 이렇습니다. 볼일이 있어 무리와 떨어진 한 사내가 겨울날 혼자서 아침 아홉 시에 유콘 강을 따라 길을 나섭니다. 그의 목표는 12시에 점심을 먹고 저녁 6시에 채굴지의 캠프에 합류하는 것입니다. 사내는 방한모, 벙어리장갑, 모카신, 두꺼운 독일제 양말을 걸치고 시계와 성냥, 얼지 않도록 손수건에 싸서 맨살에 바로 닿게 한 베이컨빵 도시락을 휴대하고 허스키 개 한 마리를 데리고 가고 있습니다. 기온은 영하 50도 이하. 침을 뱉으면 허공에서 침이 곧장 얼어붙어 짜락 하는 소리가 날 정도입니다. 숨을 내쉴 때마다 서리가 수염에 응결되어 딱딱한 얼음수염이 고드름처럼 점점 길어집니다. 하지만 사내는 이 동네에서 이 정도는 감수할 만하다고 생각하며 개의치 않습니다. 사내가 가장 걱정하는 것은 물에 빠지는 일입니다. 영하 50도의 추위에 모든 강물과 지류는 꽁꽁 얼어붙어 있겠지만, 아무리 심한 혹한에도 산 속에는 얼지 않는 샘물이 있고 그 물줄기가 강으로 흘러들고 있음을 알기 때문입니다. 지표면 상태를 모르는 채 두텁게 쌓인 눈밭을 가다 보면 우연히 얇은 얼음장 위를 디딜 수 있는데, 그렇게 발을 잠깐 적시는 것만으로도 큰 위험에 빠질 수 있습니다. 가던 길을 멈추고 불을 피워 신과 양말을 말려야 하고, 계획된 여정이 지체되면 어떤 일이 벌어질지 알 수가 없으니까요. 그럭저럭 순조롭게 점심 도시락까지는 먹었고, 내처 길을 가던 중 사내는 결국 물웅덩이에 한쪽 발을 빠뜨리게 됩니다. 이제부터 사내의 사투가 시작됩니다. 발을 말리면 기껏 한 시간 정도 늦으리라 생각했지만, 미처 생각지 못했던 변수들이 그의 계획을 방해합니다. 불을 피우기 위해 장갑을 벗자 손가락이 급속히 추위에 마비되기 시작합니다. 애써 불을 지피는 데 성공은 했지만 탁 트인 공간이 아니라 나무 밑에서 불을 피우는 바람에 나뭇가지에 무겁게 쌓여 있던 눈이 우수수 떨어져 타던 불을 꺼뜨리고 맙니다. 경악한 사내는 다시 땔감을 모아 불을 지피려고 허둥지둥합니다. 불쏘시개용으로 주머니에 넣어둔 자작나무 껍질에 성냥불을 붙이려고 해보지만 그의 손은 이미 곱아서 성냥개비 한 개를 잡을 수가 없습니다. '촉각 대신 시각을 이용해서' 손가락을 성냥에 가까이 대는 것까지가 그가 할 수 있는 동작입니다. 다급해진 사내는 70개짜리 성냥 다발을 양손 손목 사이에 끼우고 통째로 그어 불을 피웁니다. 아직 팔 근육은 얼지 않았습니다. 불을 자작나무 껍질에 갖다대고 있으니 살이 타들어가는 감각이 전해집니다. 화상의 고통을 참고 양 팔로 나무껍질과 성냥다발을 감싼 채 한참을 버티자 결국 불이 붙었습니다. 이제 나무껍질 불씨에 잔가지를 올려놓아야 하는데 손가락이 아니라 양 손목을 이용해야 하기 때문에 좋은 땔감을 세심히 골라 얹을 수가 없어요. 굼뜬 몸짓으로 열심히 땔감을 얹던 중 잔가지에 딸려온 이끼덩이(습기를 머금었을)가 불 위로 떨어졌고, 사내는 손가락으로 이끼를 끄집어내려 하지만 말을 듣지 않는 손가락은 그만 연약한 불씨를 잘못 헤집어 꺼뜨려 버리고 맙니다. 사내는 옆에서 추위에 떨고 있던 개를 바라봅니다. 사내는 어떤 이가 사슴의 시체 속에 들어가 눈보라를 이겨냈다는 이야기를 떠올립니다. 개를 죽이고 따뜻한 몸속에 손을 집어넣어 녹이면 불을 피울 수 있겠다고 사내는 생각합니다. 사내가 부르자 겁먹은 개는 말을 잘 듣지 않습니다. 사내는 개를 움켜잡으려고 하다가 깜짝 놀랍니다. 손가락이 아니라 이젠 손 자체가 얼어서 개를 죽이는 동작조차 할 수 없게 되었다는 것을 깨달았던 겁니다. 죽음의 공포에 휩싸인 사내는 일어나 아무런 목적 없이 눈길을 달리기 시작합니다. 달리다 보니 발이 녹은 것 같기도 하고, 기분도 나아지고, 동상에 걸린 손발은 포기하더라도 캠프에 도착하기만 하면 몸에서 성한 부분은 살릴 수 있으리란 생각이 듭니다. 이 질주는 얼마 안 가 사내가 지쳐 쓰러지면서 중단됩니다. 이제 사내는 '목 잘린 닭처럼 바보스럽게 뛰어다니는 건 꼴불견'이라고 생각하고, 어차피 얼어죽을 거면 품위 있게 받아들이자고 생각합니다. '얼어 죽는 건 사람들이 생각하는 것만큼 나쁜 건 아니다. 그보다 못하게 죽는 경우도 많다'고. 사내는 의연히 일어나 앉아 머릿속으로 자신의 시체를 찾아다니는 동료들과 자기 자신의 모습을 그려보며 잠에 빠져듭니다. 클론다이크 강 유역에선 영하 50도 이하에서 혼자 다녀선 안 된다고 충고하던 한 고참의 모습이 그의 머릿속에 떠오른 마지막 이미지였습니다. 곁을 지키던 개는 왜 이 인간이 불을 안 피워 주는가, 한참 기다리다 가까이 가보고 죽음의 냄새를 맡고는 캠프를 향해 혼자 길을 떠납니다.  <레버넌트>를 보고는 <버드맨>에 이어 또다시 속은 기분이 들었습니다. 이건 서바이벌이 아니잖아! 어떤 분들은 디카프리오판 베어 그릴스라고 하던데, 저는 그의 프로그램을 본 적이 없어서 모르겠습니다만 한 가지는 확실하다고 생각합니다. <레버넌트>에 물론 야생 곰이 나오고 사냥꾼과 원주민들이 나오고 주인공은 강물에 빠지고 추위에 떨고 말가죽 속에 들어가 살아남고 합니다만, 이 영화는 대자연에 맞서 생존투쟁하는 인간을 그리고 있지 않습니다. 위에서 잭 런던의 단편을 좀 쓸데없이 길게 요약했는데 요점은 간단합니다. 순간순간이 생사를 건 선택을 강제해 오는 절박한 상황에서 인간의 돌이킬 수 없는 단순한 행동 하나하나는 그 순간 전 지구의 무게에 해당할 만큼 무거워집니다. 그런데 휴 글래스(디카프리오 분)는 너무 가볍습니다... <레버넌트>는 서바이벌 장르에서 가능한 수많은 디테일들을 소거해 버리고 빈약한 내러티브만을 남겨 놓습니다. 그 결과 관객들은 상당히 느슨하게 배치된 화면들을 보게 됩니다. 잔인한 피츠제럴드(톰 하디 분)는 글래스를 무덤에 집어던져 버리고 나서도 그의 소지품에서 부싯돌과 화약 같은 가볍고 귀중한 물품들을 챙겨가지 않습니다. 리 족에 쫓겨 급류에 휘말려 떠내려온 뒤 강 기슭에 기어올라온 글래스는 그 다음 장면에서 버젓이 불을 피우고 있습니다. 화약이 물에 젖었는지 확인해 보는 절차는 생략되어 있어요. 눈보라 속에서 말의 내장을 파헤칠 때도 글래스가 무슨 생각을 떠올렸기에 그렇게 했는지, 그 때 사용한 칼은 어디서 꺼냈는지, 그의 손가락은 칼을 사용할 수 있는 상태였는지, 서바이벌의 관점에서는 굉장히 중요한 문제들입니다만 답해 주는 장면이 없습니다. 제 생각에 이런 것들은 '어떻게 다 죽어가던 사람이 살아나 저렇게 쌩쌩하게 돌아다니는가' 하는 물음보다 더 중요한 물음입니다. 이 영화를 두고 종종 이야기되는 글래스의 신비로운 생명력은 사실 도구들의 생명력, 그 도구들을 사용할 수 있는 인간의 판단력과 집중력에 의거하는 것입니다만, 감독은 도통 도구와 연장에 관심이 없어 보입니다. 제 기억에 남은 유일한 도구는 소년 브릿저(윌 폴터 분)가 남겨두고 간 소용돌이 무늬를 새긴 물통입니다. 이 물통은 나중에 복선으로 사용되긴 하지만 글래스의 생존투쟁 과정에 그다지 큰 구실을 하고 있지는 않지요. 물론 이 영화가 이야기하고자 하는 것이 단순한 서바이벌의 과정은 아닙니다. 하지만 그런 디테일들을 무시한 결과 영화는 많이 단조로워지고 밀도가 떨어집니다. 두 시간 반이 넘는 러닝타임 대부분을 혼자 차지하는 주인공은 단지 피상적인 인과관계로 유발된 육체적 고통의 시각적 표현들을 전시하는 장치로 남게 되고, 러닝타임을 따라가는 관객들은 그에게 '생고생하는 사람', '아들을 잃은 아버지' 이상의 자질구레한 감정이입을 할 수 없게 됩니다. 대사라도 있었으면 좋았을 텐데 곰에게 하필 목을 다치는 바람에 인어공주가 되어버렸군요. 글래스가 시시때때로 떠올리는 환상은 언어라는 수단을 잃어버린 그의 내면을 보여주는 유일한 통로이지만, 그 환상들이 현재의 생존(관객들의 관심사)과 직결된 것들이 아니라 글래스 혼자만이 아는 모호한 과거(가족, 살육)와 미래(아내, 구원)라는 점을 볼 때 감독의 관심사는 관객들로 하여금 글래스라는 인물의 그때그때 상황에 집중하게 만드는 것이 절대 아니었던 듯합니다. 감독은 관객들이 글래스의 고통(재현된 이미지)에서 바로 비약하여 세계의 비극(글래스의 환상)을 보기를 원하는데, 저는 그 비약이 좋은 전략이었다고 생각하지 않습니다. 글래스는 상징적으로 삶과 죽음의 경계를 걷는 자입니다. 그가 아들에게 들려준 몇 마디 말, '투명인간처럼 살아라', '그들은 네 얼굴색을 볼 뿐 네 말을 듣지 않는다. 아무 말도 하지 말아라', '숨을 쉬어라' 들은 삶과 죽음, 백인과 원주민, 문명과 자연이라는 두 세계 사이의 모호한 빈틈에서 살아가는 글래스의 최소화된 존재 양식입니다. 말은 하지 않고 숨만 쉬는 그는 영화의 내러티브상 수동적인 유령으로 머무릅니다. 곰에게 당하고, 피츠제럴드에게 묻히고, 원주민에게 구원받거나 쫓기고, 심지어 피츠제럴드를 자기 손으로 죽이는 일조차 하지 않습니다. "아무것도 하고 싶지 않다. 지금도 아무것도 하고 있지 않지만 더욱더 격렬하게 아무것도 하고 싶지 않다", 이 문구가 글래스의 상태를 정확하게 표현하고 있는 것 같습니다. 아들의 죽음에 대한 복수의 필요성이 그를 무위 상태에서 끄집어낸 것은 납득할 수 있지만, 영화 속 그의 행위들은 앞서 말했듯이 지나치게 의례적이고 상투적이며 긴장과 서스펜스의 여지를 막고 있습니다. 감독은 현명한 원주민, 잔인하고 짐승 같은 백인, 상냥하고 이상적인 아내, 끔찍한 제노사이드, 아름답고 잔혹한 대자연, 예측 가능한 모든 클리셰 화면들을 동원해서 그의 '무위'의 알리바이를 만들고자 시도합니다. (심지어 <버드맨>에서 바로 가져온 것 같은, 떨어지는 유성 장면까지...이건 좀 반칙) 덤으로, 프랑스인들의 간악함과 대조되는 미국인들의 '정상적인' 캠프 상황은 다소간 의아합니다. 마치 이 캠프의 모든 악을 피츠제럴드 한 사람에게 몰아서 떠넘긴 것 같아요. 만일 글래스가 귀환했을 때 맞닥뜨린 캠프가 프랑스인들의 캠프나 마찬가지로 강간, 기만, 살육이 자행되고 있는 공간이었다면 더욱 비극적인 상황이 되었을 텐데요. 왜 감독은 헨리 대장(돔널 글리슨 분)을 그렇게 상식적이고 평면적인 인물로 설정했을까, 이 영화가 보여주는 수많은 부조리에서 미국인 캠프는 왜 한 발짝 벗어나 있을까 하는 점은 좀 불만스럽습니다. 저는 초반부 원주민 리 족과 미국인 사냥꾼들이 한데 얽혀 어느 쪽이 어느 쪽인지 분간할 수 없도록 흔들어버리는 강렬한 전투 시퀀스(루베스키가 또!)에서 이후 <지옥의 묵시록>과 유사한 내러티브 발전을 예상했는데, 그렇지 않아서 좀 실망했습니다. 물의 이미지는 이 영화에서 반복해서 나타나는 죽음의 상징입니다. 영화 도입부에서 글래스는 시냇물에 발을 적시며 사냥을 하고 있습니다. 중반부에 세 마리 사슴(순록?)이 목만 내놓고 강을 건너는 장면, 글래스가 그걸 보고 지팡이로 쓰던 나뭇가지를 들어 총 쏘는 시늉을 하던 장면이 굉장히 인상적이었습니다. 그가 천생 사냥꾼이라는 이야기도 되겠고, 물을 건너가는 사슴들이 그야말로 죽음의 상징(구천으로 가는 자들)처럼 보였습니다. 또 마지막에 피츠제럴드를 반 죽여 놓은 상태로 글래스는 그를 강 건너편에 죽음의 사자처럼 나타난 리 족 원주민들에게 떠내려 보냅니다. 이들은 피츠제럴드를 처리하고는 말을 탄 채 강을 건너와 글래스를 마치 존재하지 않는 자처럼 무시하고 지나쳐 버리죠. 글래스가 구해준 적이 있는 추장의 딸 포와카만이 그를 알아보는 듯하지만 그녀도 별다른 행동은 하지 않아요. 글래스는 영화 속에서 강을 따라 계속 이동하고 강에 빠지기도 합니다만 강을 건너가지는 않았던 걸로 기억합니다(혹시 제 기억이 틀렸을지도 모릅니다). 어쨌든 글래스는 영화가 끝날 때까지 '강 이편'에 남아 있었고, 그의 연약한 생존은 계속될 것 같습니다. 어떤 분께서 <레버넌트>의 마지막 장면이 <버드맨>과 유사하다고 말씀하셨는데, 죽은 자(아내)를 떠나보내는 사람의 정면 샷이라는 점에서 정말 유사하네요. 기쁨이 보이지 않는다는 점을 제외하면. p.s. 디카프리오는 아카데미를 못 탈 것 같습니다. 그 고생을 했는데 얼굴이 너무 피둥피둥해 보여요. 인간이 어찌할 수 없는 골상학적인 한계라서 디카프리오의 잘못은 아니지만, 캐스팅한 이냐리투의 잘못입니다. 뭐 탄다면 축하해 주겠지만;; * 수박이두통에게보린님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2016-02-15 08:24) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다.
