올해 스바루 문학상(그러니까, 일본의 꽤 큰 문학상이다)에, 17세 작가가 쓴 '토요코 키즈(그러니까, 성매매와 마약 밀매, 건달짓 등과 깊게 유착된 일본의 문제적 가출청소년 현상이다) 문학'이 선정되었다는 트윗을 보게 되었다. 기사 링크를 찍어보니 유료 혹은 회원 가입이 필요한 기사다. 랄라, 인터넷은 정보의 바다, 굳이 돈을 내고 정보의 섬에 입항할 필요는 없으니. 앞의 무료분 기사를 보니 뭐 올해 아쿠타가와 신인상(그러니까, 일본의 가장 큰 신인상이다) 유력 후보라 한다. 더 찾아보니 스바루 문학상 수상을 주관하는 집영사의 홈페이지에 수상소감이 있다. 물론 무료다. 읽어보니 대충 삐딱한 청소년이 중고등학교때 문학으로 구원받은 서사다. 인상깊은 문장이 나온다. 「なんだ、小説ってこんなに自由でいいんだって」 뭐야, 소설이란 거 이렇게 자유롭고 좋은 거였나. 수상을 한 친구는 고딩때 와타야 리사의 '발로 차버리고 싶은 등짝'과 무라카미 류의 '한없이 투명에 가까운 블루'를 읽으며 '뭐야, 소설이란 거 이렇게 자유롭고 좋은 거였나' 하는 생각을 하게 되었고, 하여 때때로 떠오르는 감정들을 핸드폰 메모장에 끼적거리다가 그걸 소설로 묶어보게 되었고, 그렇게 쓴 첫 소설로 등단하게 되었단다. 와타야 리사가 첫 소설을 쓴 나이에 자기도 첫 소설을 쓰고 싶어 힘내보았다고. 아마 와타야 리사가 역대 최연소 아쿠타가와 수상자일텐데, 이 친구가 아쿠타가와를 받게 되면 최연소 기록이 바뀌게 될 것이다. 부럽군. 그러니까, 현대 순문학을 읽고 나서 '뭐야, 소설이란 이렇게 자유롭고 좋은 거였나' 라고 할 수 있는 전통이 있다는 것이. 무라카미 류의 '한없이 투명에 가까운 블루'는 인생의 세 손가락에 꼽는 소설이다. 짧게 요약하면 미군기지촌 근처에 사는 히피 청소년들이 마약섹스를 하는 내용이다. 얼마나 좋아하는 소설이냐 하면, 나는 인생에 단 한번 문학 성지순례를 가 본 적이 있는데, 그게 이 소설의 배경이 되는 훗사의 요코타 공군기지였다. 가서 딱히 한 건 없고, 소설에 계속 등장하는 도어즈의 음악을 주구장창 들으며 기지촌을 산책했다. 아 물론 간 김에 aiko 앨범자켓 로케지도 두 군데 들렸는데, 놀랍게도 이것이 서브 퀘스트였고 메인 퀘스트는 문학 성지순례였다. 아무튼 이 소설은 70년대 아쿠타가와 수상작인데, 당대 일본에도 파격이었던 작품이었던 듯 하고(물론 기지촌의 마약난교파티란 지금도 제법 파격적인 소재일 것이다), 옛시절 한국의 일문학 서적들을 보자면 가끔씩 뭐랄까 '고의적으로' 언급을 피하는 듯한 소설이다(아무래도 구체적으로 다루자면 심의 문제가 있을테니). 아무튼 이십대의 무라카미 류는 주인공이 마약섹스를 하며 미군을 상대로 남창짓을 하는 소설을 써서 '최고 권위 문학상'을 통해 등단하고 여러 재미있는 소설을 냈다. 악어를 키우는 미소녀 아이돌이 코인로커에 버려진 쌍둥이 고아를 주워 함께 세상을 전복시키려는 이야기라거나, 영혼을 추출하는 SM클럽 이야기라거나, 섹스 요리 소설집이라거나. 뭐, 수상한 소설만 쓴 건 아니다. '어른이 되어 멋진 트럭 운전사가 된 소녀가, 어린 시절 고아인 자신에게 발레를 가르쳐준 주일미군을 만나러 트럭을 몰고 미국을 횡단하는 이야기'같은 감동적이고 소소한 소설도 썼다. 짧게 쓰려고 했지만, 꽤 오랜 시간 제일 좋아하던 작가의 이야기니까 길게 쓸 수 밖에 없네. 죄송합니다. 아무튼. 꽤나 별난 문학세계를 가진 이 아재는 나름 일본 문학계의 슈퍼스타가 되어, 심사위원도 되고 한다. 무라카미 류가 아쿠타가와 심사위원이던 21세기 초에, 와타야 리사가 '발로 차버리고 싶은 등짝'으로 최연소 아쿠타가와를 수상한다. 무라카미 류가 밀어준 작가였나, 는 기억이 안 난다(비슷한 시기에 카네하라 히토미의 '뱀에게 피어스' 라고 혓바닥 피어싱을 필두로 한 bdsm이 메인 테마였던 소설도 아쿠타가와를 수상했는데, 이건 무라카미 류가 밀어줬다는 기사를 본 기억이 있다). '미소녀 작가의 최연소 수상'으로 백만부인가 팔았고, 후에 작가는 스토킹 피해를 입게 되었다는 그런 기사를 본 기억도 어렴풋이 난다. 뭐 죄다 20년 전의 기억이기에, 틀릴 지도 모르겠지만, 굳이 찾아서 정정하고 싶은 마음은 없다. 아무튼, 소설 자체는 그렇게 감동적이지는 않았지만, 꽤나 재미있었다. 뭐랄까, 일탈적/인싸 청소년들의 유쾌한 일상 그런 거였는데, 아마 그때도 일본 문단에서 '이딴거에 최고권위 문학상을 준다고??' 하는 이야기가 꽤나 벌어졌던 기억이다. 그러니까, 일본 문단은 70년대 '마약섹스남창' 이야기에 최고 권위의 신인상을 주었고, 상을 받은 청년 무라카미 류는 21세기에 상의 심사위원이 되어, 와타야 리사의 '일탈여고생일상담' 에 최고 권위의 신인상을 주었다. '그딴거에 최고권위 문학상을 준다고??'라는 이야기를 남기며. 그리고 며칠 전, 17세 꼬맹이가, 문제적 소설로 스바루 문학상을 등단하며, 이런 수상 소감을 남긴다. '고딩때 저 두 작가의 소설을 읽으며, 뭐야, 소설이란 이렇게 자유롭고 좋은 거였나 하는 생각을 하고 소설을 쓰게 되었습니다'. 그리고 이번 스바루 문학상의 심사위원 중 한 명은, 저 마약난교남창작가가 심사 때 극찬한 bdsm 소설, 뱀에게 피어스의 작가, 카네하라 히토미였다. - 한국의 노벨문학상 수상은 큰 경사다. 비록 나는 한강 작가를 최고로 좋아하진 않고(꽤 좋아하고, 위대한 작가라 생각한다), 한이십년 전부터 주구장창 '노벨문학상 그거 노벨평화상 2등상 아니냐' 라는 농담을 하곤 했지만(그렇다고 노벨문학상의 문학적 권위가 없다고 생각하지 않는다. 위대한 문학상이다). 그리고 이것은 한국 문학의 승리라고 생각한다. 당연히, 한강은 한국의 문학적 전통 안에 있으니까. 그렇게 며칠이 지났고, 일본에서, 17세 친구가 등단한다. 과거의 순문학을 읽으며, '뭐야, 소설이란 이렇게 자유롭고 좋은 거였나' 라고 생각해서 소설을 쓰게 된 친구가. 한강이 한국적 전통에 있듯, 그 친구 역시 일본 문학적 전통 안의 존재일 것이다. 어느 전통이 더 우위에 있는가, 하는 것은 노벨문학상을 세계일짱문학상이냐 허접쓰레기상이냐 논쟁을 하는 것만큼 똥같은 논쟁일 것이다. 어떤 전통도 더 우위에 있지 않고, 더 위대하지도 않다. 또한 어떤 소소한 전통이라는 것이 자의적으로 선택될 수 있는 것도 아니다. 아무래도 소소한 전통이라는 것은 역사와 물적 토대와 뭐 여러가지 위로 세워지곤 하는 것이니까. 왜, 레닌이 그러지 않았냐. '저 멍청이들은 이론을 수입하는 데에는 성공했지만 안타깝게도 정세를 수입하는 데에는 실패했다.' 이론과 정세가, 문학과 역사가 따로 갈 수는 없는 일이니까. 같은 돌려 말하는 이야기는 조금 지겹고. 뭐 어차피 작은 커뮤니티 사이트니까, 조금 더 직선적으로 이야기해보자면, 그래. 한국 현대 문학은 '범죄적 가출청소년 이야기를 다루는 청소년 작가가, 「뭐야, 소설이란 이렇게 자유롭고 좋은 거였나」 라고 할 수 있는 작품에 최고권위 신인상 내지는 그에 필적할 만한 상 혹은 마케팅을 선물한 적이 있나. 물론 어느 시기에나 머리 굵고 삐딱한 문학 청소년들은 굳이 마약섹스나 여고생의 일상 같은 게 등장하지 않는 차분한 고전 문학을 읽으면서도 '호오, 자유롭고 좋군' 하는 해방감을 맛보고는 한다. 그중 운좋은/운나쁜 몇은 미국적/유럽적/일본적/한국적 전통의 소설을 쓰는 작가가 된다(주변의 친구 몇이 그랬다). 물론 나로 말할 것 같으면, 부부SM단이 남고생을 납치해서 오함마로 머리를 찍는 백민석의 편이었지만(그래서 작가가 되지 못했는지도 모르겠다). 그래서, 한국 현대 문학의 최근 몇 년을 돌아봅시다. 좋은 작품들이 많았지만, 아무래도 머리가 얇은 삐딱한 비문학 청소년들이 자유롭고 좋다고 느낄 만한 작품들이 '순문학'으로 포섭되는 일은 없었던 느낌이다(혹자는 안온하고 다정하고 무해하며 지적인 소설이 많았다고 느끼고, 혹자는 아직도 독자가 아닌 평단에 보내는 구애의 편지를 작품으로 쓴다고 이야기한다). 범위를 넓혀 몇십 년, 뭐 21세기 이후를 돌아보자. 좀 더 넓혀서 무라카미 류가 마약난교파티소설을 쓰던 70년대로 확장해보아도 좋고. 좋은 소설은 넘치도록 많았다(게다가 착하고 똑똑하기까지 하다). 게다가 이번에 노벨상도 땄다. 좋은데, 좋은 일인데, 그래서 어떤 굉장한 해방감과 고양감을 주는, 어떤 일종의 '반-문학적' 전통을 인정한 적이 있나. 끽해야 떠오르는 건 백민석 정도다. 그리고 그가 한국 문단에서 받은 취급을 생각해보면. 문학 세계의 일원으로서(독자, 도 엄연한 문학 세계의 직업이다), 내가 어느 한 전통을 선택할 수 있다면, 아무래도 나는 '노벨상의 깊이'보다는 '자유롭고 좋은' 세계를 선택할 것이다. 문학이니까는. 물론 문학의 절대 가치가 자유도 좋음도 아니지만서도. 하지만 그 전통이 '권위'를 통해 몇십 년을 이어져, 어느 꼬맹이놈이 '소설의 세계는 자유롭고 좋은 세계이다'를 선언할 수 있는 정도가 된다면, 나는 기꺼이 자유와 좋음을 최고의 위치에 두어볼 용의도 있다. 한강의 수상으로 한강의 소설이 동나고 있다. 좋은 일이다. 뭐 역사가 쌓이다보면 우리도 언젠가 반문학의 전통을 포섭할 수 있겠지. 오키나와 운동권 출신 치매노인이 천황의 퍼레이드에 똥을 퍼붓는다거나(메도루마 슌), 발기부전에 시달리는 '자본론 할아버지'가 어린 여자를 끌어안고 '아, 너의 품 속이란 프랑스어판 자본론 서문 같구나' 라고 읊조리는 소설이라거나(타카하시 겐이치로), 여자 장애인이 보육사에게 돈을 내고 입에 박아달라는 제안을 한다거나(이치카와 사오), 그런 소설이 단적으로 옳거나 좋거나 자유롭다는 이야기는 아니지만, 그런 소설이 순문학의 은총을 입을 수 있는 세계(그러니까, 상을 받고, 푸시되고, 읽히는)와 그것이 그렇지 않은 세계는 완전하게 다른 이야기가 아닌가. 노벨문학상으로 어떤 '깊이'를 성취해낸 한국의 문학이, 앞으로는 어떤 '넓이'의 역사도 시작되어 반문학의 영토도 조금은 보장되기를, 하는 소소한 기대를. 삐딱한 중고딩 꼬맹이가 읽고 '뭐야 소설이란 이렇게 자유롭고 좋구나' 라는 감각을 받을 수 있는 소설들에도 순문학의 은총이 비출 날이 있기를. 다시, 문학적 전통이 물적 토대를 벗어나 자의적으로 선택될 수는 없고, 아무래도 나는 한국어 화자이니까는. - 중요한 문제는 아니지만, 스물 몇이 되기 전의 나도 '무라카미 류가 등단한 나이 쯤에 등단했으면 좋겠군' 이라는 생각을 했다. 마음의 눈으로 보고 흘리시길. 이번에 스바루를 탄 녀석은 '와타야 리사와 같은 나이에 등단하고 싶었다'라고 하고 등단해버리고. 쳇. 부러운 녀석. 물론 더 부러운 것은, 그 녀석이 '뭐야, 소설이란 이렇게 자유롭고 좋은 거였나'를 진심으로 말할 수 있는 녀석일 거라는 데에 있다. 물론 일본에 주소지가 있는 친구일 것이기에 aiko 라이브를 가기 훨씬 편한 조건이라는 점이 역시 가장 부럽다. * Cascade님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2024-11-05 10:34) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다.
