https://new.redtea.kr/free/14692 앞선 편에서는 기자들의 전문성 약화, 실력 저하 등에 대한 얘기로 끝을 맺으면서 그 이야기를 더 하겠다고 했는데요, 이번편에서는 기자집단에 어떤 일이 벌어졌는지 주로 결정적 계기들 위주로 정리하고 현 상황을 짚어 보겠습니다. 다음편에서는 정치적 광기로까지 치부되는 지독한 편향성에 대한 얘기를 할 생각입니다. 사실 하고 싶은 말은 엄청 많지만, 총 세 편 정도로 압축적으로 마무리하는 것도 미덕이다 싶습니다. --------------------------------------- 1. 언론고시의 추억 '언론고시' 지금이야 비웃음이나 당할 얘기이지만, 한때는 정말 그랬다. 1990년대 언론의 전성기 시절, 즉 여전히 허가제로 언론사 수가 극도로 제한적이었던 그때에는 기자는 월급도 많고, 사회적 영향력도 큰 그러면서 비교적 자유롭게 생활할 수 있는 정말 좋은 직업이었다. 그래서 경쟁률은 어마무시했다. 애초에 고시공부에 별 관심은 없으나, 세상 좀 바꿔보고 싶은 사람들, 글빨 좀 되는 사람들, 책 좀 읽었다 싶은 사람들은 죄다 지원했다. 누군가가 그랬다(사실 제가 한 말임). "신문이란, 등단은 아무나 하는 게 아니라는 걸 깨달은 문학도와 유학은 여건이 돼야 갈 수 있다는 걸 깨달은 사회과학도들이 모여 한풀이 하며 만드는 것" 어쨌든, 1990년대나 2000년대 초반만 해도 메이저 언론사 입성에 실패하고 사법시험 준비해서 몇년 안에 붙었다는 소식이 종종 들릴 정도였다. 2000년대 중반을 넘어가면서 분위기가 다소 변했다. 그래도 10대 일간지/경제지와 기간통신사와 방송 3사 + YTN+MBN(당시 종편이 아닌 보도채널)은 2~3년은 준비하는게 보통이었고, (언론사 시험은 약간 과거시험과 비슷한 면이 있어 정말 그날 주제어/제시어랑 잘 맞아 일필휘지로 써내고 기본 상식/영어/국어 시험만 잘 통과하면 빨리 붙을 수도 있다. 절대 공부량보다는 필력이 중요한 부분이 존재하긴 했다.) 준비하다 안되면 대기업에 가는 정도였다. 2000년대 중반, 2010년 전후만해도 삼성/현대차/LG 등 국내 굴지의 기업을 1~2년 다니다가 메이저 언론사 기자 타이틀 미련을 못버리고 혹은 자신이 원래 하고 싶었던 '기자일'에 대한 미련이 남아 다시 시험쳐 들어온 신입 기자들이 꽤 있었다. 그러나 신고제/등록제로 바뀌며 우후죽순 늘기 시작한 언론사 수, 인터넷과 모바일 시대의 도래 그리고 소셜미디어의 등장으로 인해 언론은 광고 수익도 줄고, 구독료는 여전히 큰 수익이 되지 못하는 상황에서 돈을 엄청 주는 것도 아닌(메이저 신문사와 방송사는 초봉은 센 편이다. 여전히. 하지만 연차가 쌓여도 잘 오르지 않는다.), 그렇다고 예전 처럼 영향력이 센 것도 아닌, 내가 1면에 뭔가 특종을 써도 세상은 잘 모르는 그런 시대로 접어들기 시작한다. 기자의 인기는 예전만 못해진다. 그리고 몇 가지 결정적인 사건들이 일어난다. 2. Girexit의 순간들, 그리고 우수한 인력의 언론 외면 언론사 내 이른바 '에이스'들은 하나 둘 회사를 떠나기 시작했다. 2010년대 들어서며 로스쿨이 활성화되자 어차피 말과 글로 먹고 사는데 적성이 맞았던 상당수는 아예 리트 시험을 보고 로스쿨로 떠난다. 일부는 한푼 두푼 모은 돈으로 유학길에 올랐다. 그 와중에 몇 가지 결정적 사건을 계기로 언론의 추락, 우수한 기자들의 이탈은 가속화되고 만다. 1) MB정부의 언론장악 음모론 아니냐고? 아니다. 실제 존재했던 일이다. MB의 멘토를 자처하던 양반과 최근 다시 등장한 이동관씨 등은 한국언론이 좌편향돼 있다고 믿었다. 그리고 종편을 미끼로 신문사를 틀어쥐고자 한다. 방송사는 사장을 축출하는 방식을 쓴다. SBS는 본래 풀보다 빨리 누우니 별 상관 없었다. 언론 장악과 관련해 유명한 일화가 하나 있다. 종편 사업권을 따내고 싶었던 한 신문사에 찾아온 정부 유력자는 "나는 여기 회장님은 믿겠는데, 기자들을 못믿겠다" 라고 말했다. 즉, 정부에 비판적인 기자들이 계속 남아서 정부를 조지면 종편은 물건너간 줄 알라는 뜻이었다. 환멸을 느낀 신문사 기자들은 로스쿨과 유학, 사업 등 다른 대안을 찾아 떠나기 시작했다. 방송사에서는 '신천교육대'로 불리는 곳에(MBC의 경우) 정부 비판적 기자(사실 이들이 대부분 에이스다)들을 몰아넣고 제과 제빵을 가르치고 아이스링크 관리직으로 발령을 냈다. 그들 중 일부는 역시나 고개를 저으며 언론을 떠났고, 일부는 문재인 정부가 들어서고 나서야 회사로 돌아올 수 있었다. 이때 큰 언론이 뉴스타파다. 에이스 해직기자들이 모여 만든 탐사전문 매체다. 이 와중에 노무현 전 대통령에 대한 수사가 진행됐다. 검찰의 살라미 전술식 피의사실 공표를 '단독', '특종'이라고 받아쓰고 '논두렁 시계'로 모욕을 주던 언론과 검찰이 사실상 노무현 대통령의 자살을 유도한 셈이나 마찬가지였다. 이때 '이게 맞나?'라며 회의감을 느끼던 기자들은 또 다시 탈출했다. 그래도 아직 희망이 있었고, 엑소더스 까지는 아니었다. 물론 "형광등 100개의 아우라", '토끼 인터뷰' 등을 등장시킨 종편 뉴스는 언론의 본령을 고민하던 기자들에게 자괴감을 안겨주기는 했지만 말이다. 2)세월호와 기레기 일부 연예찌라시 기자들에게나 통용되던 '기레기'라는 단어가 전 언론사, 전 기자 집단으로 확산된 계기는 누가 뭐래도 세월소 참사였다. 청와대발 오보를 아무런 팩트체크 없이 받아쓰던 메이저 언론과 통신사, 방송사들. 몇몇 언론은 "유족들 보상 얼마 받나?" 따위를 기사랍시고 써댔다. 그리고 어느 순간 박근혜 정권 지키기에 나선 몇몇 언론들은 유가족들을 빨갱이로 몰아가기까지 했다. 그리고 시작된 구원파 사냥. 그 유명한 '닭뼈가 나왔다.(대충 도망차던 유병언 아들이 치킨 시켜먹었다는 얘기)" 따위 보도로 상징되는 한심한 작태들. 국민들은, 독자들은, 시청자들은 바보가 아니다. 슬슬 기자라는 직업은 비웃음과 조롱의 대상으로 전락하기 시작했다. 많은 양식있는 기자들은 이때 진짜 괴로워했다. 그리고 많은 이들, 특히 좀 실력있다 싶은 기자들이 또 다시 언론을 대거 떠났다. 그리고 각 언론사마다 에이스로 분류되던 이들 중, 언론에 미련이 있거나 애정이 있는 사람들은 JTBC로 많이 옮기기도 했다. 세월호 국면에서 그래도 가장 언론다웠기 때문이다. 3)다소곳한 기자들, 부활한 기자정신 그리고 음식점 배달원 탄핵 국면에 들어가기 직전 박근혜가 기자들을 불러 모았다. 그때 봤던 그 누구보다 다소곳하게 대통령님 말씀을 경청하던 모습에 국민들은 충격을 받았다. 물론 이후 판이 뒤집히며 극렬히 다들 물어뜯기는 했지만. 박근혜 정부 내내 언론은 온순했다. MB가 박근혜에게 준 선물이랄까. 그리고 문재인 정부가 들어서니, 잘못한 정책 문제있는 인사를 비판하는 수준을 넘어 혼밥 논란, 패싱 논란 등 당최 트집이란 트집은 다 잡는 방식의 보도가 시작됐다. 기자정신이 어쩜 이렇게 부활했을까.(이 정치적 광기와 편향은 다음편에 얘기하겠다.) 이미 떠날 사람 다 떠났지만, 내외부의 많은 이들은 또 다시 회의감에 빠졌다. 조국 사태가 전개됐다. 조국 전 장관의 내로남불도 국민에게 상처를 남겼고 여러 면에서 조롱거리가 됐지만, 그 수사과정에서 "음식은 뭘 시켰나요?"라고 한 가정이 털리는 과정에서 해맑게 뭐 먹었는지 묻고 자빠진 기자들의 모습도 조롱거리가 되기는 마찬가지였다. 그리고 정권이 바뀐 뒤 우리는 김치찌개를 받아 먹으며 박수 치는 기자들을 보고 있다. 경향신문에서 나온 얘기가 재밌다. "총선 특집 준비 열심히 했는데, 유튜브한테 관심을 다 빼앗겼다" 얼마나 언론이 힘이 없어졌는지 이제서야 체감들을 한 모양이다. 그리고 최근, '박민의 방송 KBS'로 바뀐 이후 KBS에서 분야별로 잘한다는 양반들은 죄다 나오고 있다. K는 그래도 이직을 하거나 떠나는 비율이 크지 않았던 곳인데. 이제 그렇게 마지막 거친 숨을 몰아쉬며 숨을 거두기 직전인 게 한국 언론이 아닌가 싶다. 3. 더 이상 똑똑한 친구들이 지원하지 않는 곳 방송3사는 아직 그래도, 여전히 괜찮은 편이나 조중동매경한경. 즉 월급 웬만큼 주고 불과 15년전만 해도 대기업 때려치고 다시 시험쳐 들어오던 그 신문사들에 똑똑한 친구들이 지원하지 않는다. 그렇게 된지 5~6년 정도 됐다. 월급도, 사회적 영향력도, 명예마저도 사라지는 기자라는 직업에 매력을 느낄리가 없다. 서서히, 때론 급격히 에이스들이 빠져나간 자리에 그냥저냥 적당한 취직의 방편으로 들어온 젊은 기자들이 만드는 신문이 양질의 콘텐츠를 담아낼리가 없다. 최근에는 아예 대기업 홍보실로 가기위한 통로로 메이저 언론사 입사를 활용하기도 한다. 15년전과 비교하면 정반대다. 대기업 떨어지면 언론사 간다는 말이 나오기 시작했다. 경제지는 경제/산업 분석을 못하고 조중동은 한심한 정치사회 기사나 쓰고 있는 상황이 됐다. 물론 아직도 뛰어난 기자들이 남아 있다. 근데 그 수가 많지 않다보니 완전히 갈려나가고 있다. 네트워킹이나 취재력, 필력을 전수해줄만한 후배는 많이 들어오지 않는 상황에서 소수가 허덕이며 만드는 신문과 방송. 질이 좋을리가 없다. 탐사/기획 보도 이외에 스트레이트 단독, 특히 고발성 기사가 아닌 정책 단독 기사가 1면에 등장하는 과정을 보자. 세종시에서 팀장급 기자와 후배 2~3진 기자가 기재부 국장급/서기괸/사무관들과 저녁식사를 같이한다. 추진하고 싶은 정책이 있는데 위에서 받아줄지 긴가민가 하다. 예민한 정책이라 욕만 먹을 수도 있다. 이때 술자리에서 매경이나 한경에 슬쩍 흘린다. 이걸 재빨리 알아차린 팀장과 2진기자는 3진기자에게 다음날 그걸 설명하고 셋이 기사를 낸다. 청와대(지금 용산)에서는 이거 좋다, 누가 이딴걸...둘 중 하나 반응이 나온다. 후자면 모른척, 전자면 '내가 했습니다'가 되는 거다. 위 사례에서 '네트위킹', '상호간에 말을 알아먹을 거라는 신뢰', '실제로 말을 알아먹고 이를 기사화해서 써내는 능력'이라는 3요소가 필요한데, 이게 보통 어려운 일은 아니다. 그래서 다들 명문대 출신의 이해력 빠른 빠릿빠릿한 이들을 기자로 선호했던 거다. 근데...이제 팀장만 알아먹는다. 알아먹는 팀장급도 예전보다 많지 않다. 이게 모든 취재원, 출입처에서 벌어지는 일이다. 역시나 좋은 기사는 요원해진다. 4. 그리고 독자들 지난편에 '독자의 문제'를 지적한 댓글이 있었다. 동의한다. 그런데 독자층의 문제, 뉴스 소비층의 문제 특히 신문에서의 문제는 단순히 독자가 자극적인 기사를 좋아해서 벌어지는 일은 아니다. 미디어 환경이 변해, 그들이 신문과 저녁 메인 뉴스를 보지 않고 있다는 게 문제다. 즉 50대, 아니 60대 이상만 본다. 60대도 잘 보는 지 모르겠다. 신문의 활자는 계속 커지고 방송 뉴스의 포맷은 그들이 익숙한 방식에서 벗어나질 않는다. 재미도 없고, 뾰족함도 없다. 왜 신문에는 20년전과 지금 똑같은 '전문가'들이 칼럼을 쓰고 코멘트를 하고 있는가. 독자가 아는 사람이 전문가이기 때문이다. 20년전의 강준만과 진중권, 송호근이 여전히 신문에 등장하는 이유다. 실제 그들은 늙었고 통찰도 없으며 전문성도 바닥났지만, 늙어버린 독자들, 고인물이 된 시청자들에게는 그들이 역시나 최고 전문가다. 정치평론가? 더 말할 필요도 없다. 진짜 전문가들은 그 장면을 보고 혀를 찬다. 진짜 전문가가 누구인지 아는 사람들은 그 기사와 칼럼을 외면한다. 그렇게 기사와 칼럼의 질은 또 떨어져 간다. 그들과 계속 교류하며 임피를 찍으며 회사에 남아있는 논설실의 늙은이들. 그들은 이제 '내가 지식인이라는 착각'외에 가진건 없다. "누구와 밥을 먹었음. 요새 힘들다고 함. 이게 다 엉터리 규제 때문임. 국회는 한심함. 이제 정부가 나서야할때임. 정치권이 각성해야할 때임" "최근 외신을 보니 중국 제조업 경쟁력이 으마으마함. 우리가 삼류정치와 규제땜에 제자리 걸음하는 사이 중국이 앞서감. 기업들은 뛰고 있음. 발목 잡는 건 정치임. 빨리 지원해야 할때임(근데 반규제는 시장주의고, 산업정책은 국가주의적인건데...아 뭐 그런건 모름)" 이런 식의 하루에 100편도 써낼 수 있는 양산형 칼럼만 쏟아진다. 기사나 칼럼이나. 신문의 양대 콘텐츠는 이렇게 무너졌다.
