팔꿈치가 아파온 지 2주 정도가 지났다. 마침 업무로 괴로운 주간 끝에 잠깐의 휴식일이 주어져 이 참에 병원을 향한다. 테니스 엘보. 평생 테니스 라켓 따위 손에 쥐어본 일도 없는, 심지어 왼팔로는 더더욱 기회가 없을 내가 이와 마주할 이유는 별로 떠오르는 바가 없다. 최근 들어 자기 주장이 강해진 아이를 안아올려 용변을 처리할 때마다 유독 왼팔에 체중을 실어 버둥대던 모습이라든가, 유아식을 준비하며 한층 더 잦아진 웤 냄비손질로 걸리는 부하 정도 이외에는. 쉽게 말해 직업병이다. 부모라는 직업병. 좋은 아빠라 아프신 거라는 의사 선생님의 너스레에 약간은 멋쩍은 소리없는 웃음으로 화답하고 물리치료실에서 모자란 수면을 취한다. 따끔거리는 팔꿈치에 숙면도 쉽진 않다. 잠이 안들어서 일까, 아까 잠깐 들었던 좋은 아빠라는 단어가 유독 귓가를 긁어대듯 굴러다니며 내 마음을 어지럽힌다. 솜이가 태어난 지 14개월을 향하고 있다. 이전의 삶에선 감히 떠올릴 수 없을 변화들도 이 정도면 몸에 익을 시간인 듯 싶다. 정확한 근태라는 압박감이 덜한 편이라 이따금 정신 못차리고 행하던 늦잠도, 몇 달에 한 번 뿐이지만 할 일이 생각나지 않을 때 몇 시간이고 앉아 늘어지게 감상하던 드라마 시리즈 따위도 그리움을 떠나 별로 기억조차 나지 않는 예전의 행위들이 되어버렸다. 잠에서 깨어나 하루를 시작하는 순간부터 아침과 저녁의 함께 하는 대부분의 시간이 제법 긴장으로 가득하기 때문일까. 그래도 저녁은 조금 낫다. 아이를 재운 후에도 쓸 수 있는 시간이 있으니까. 지각에 무게를 덜 둔다지만 그래도 빈번한 건 어떤 측면에서도 좋을 리가 없다. 어린이집 등원 준비를 조금씩 삐끗하며 지각을 반복하다 보면 자연히 아침의 긴장감은 조금 더 당기면 끊어져버릴 팽팽함이 된다. 심지어 아이를 비롯한 모두가 최선을 다해 그 순간을 움직인다는 걸 알고 있기에, 조금 더 부지런하지 못한 누군가를 향한 마음 속 채근은 항상 내게 도착해 있다. 오늘도 부모의 자격을 가까스로 손 끝에서 건져올린 듯 싶은 아슬아슬한 하루가 지나간다. 여러모로 엄살은 좋을 게 없다. 가장 가까운 거리에서 아이와, 이를 넘어 우리 모두를 여전히 보살펴주시려 하는 장모님과 장인어른께서 계시고, 정기적으로 혹은 위급할 때 언제나 기꺼이 달려오실 의사를 밝힌 어머니도 그리 멀지 않은 곳에 계신다. 제법 이른 시기부터 어린이집에 성공적으로 적응한 솜이의 대견함은 부덕한 애비 입장에선 감사 이외엔 할 수 있는 게 감히 없을 요소 아닌가. 이러한 생활반경 덕에 우리는, 특히 나는 양육의 많은 영역을 나의 바깥에 뉘이며 기대어 지내고 있다. 업태의 사정 상 신청할 수 없는 휴직계 대신 제공된 주 1회의 재택근무도 환영할 일이다. 그 하루동안 나는 기꺼이 달려오기로 하셨던 어머니의 손길을 요청하여, 어머니께서 솜이를 돌보시는 동안 옆 방에서 업무를 진행한다. 여러 측면을 보더라도 엄살을 부리기엔 너무도 윤택한, 아이를 키우기 위한 많은 요소들이 큰 부족함 없이 채워진 현장이다. 그런 현장 속에서도 아쉬울 일을 꼽다보면 손가락이 모자라는 건 어쩔 수 없나보다. 문간 너머 들려오는 솜이의 옹알이와 우렁찬 울음은 즐겁고 제법 재미있는 소리지만 그게 근무시간은 아니었으면 하는 마음을 갖는다. 집중이 필요한 순간 들려오는 여러 음성들이 그저 유쾌할 수는 없다. 윤택함과 압박감은 별개의 문제라, 잠깐의 소동으로 솜이와 보내고 온 시간과 집중력은 일순간에 압박의 주요한 기제로 돌변하니까. 집안일 같은 것들도 그렇다. 일상의 유지를 위해 다음으로 넘기지 말아야 할 최소한의 일들이 쌓여가며 한정된 시간을 짓누르는 동안 터져나오는 게 짜증인 건 내 부덕함의 표상일 뿐이지만, 그런 부덕함이 단지 모자람의 문제인지 혹은 안고 살아야 할 인격의 문제인지는 한번쯤 더 생각해볼 필요는 있다. 이를테면 그래. 며칠 전의 일처럼 유아식용 고기를 볶으려 웤을 들어올리다 발생한 통증에 신음을 토하고, 이 때문에 잠들었던 솜이가 깨어나 우는 바람에 순간 발생한 짜증섞인 단말마가 반복되지 않으리란 법은 없다. 그래서 괜찮냐고 묻는다면, 뭐 더 할 말이 있을까. 몹시 괜찮습니다. 이외에. ------ 실은 크게 걱정을 했던 때가 있다. 가족계획을 위해 새벽녘부터 사모님과 함께 난임병원을 다니며 고단한 기간을 보내다 드디어 들려온 소식에 기쁜 마음으로 출산을 준비하는 동안에도, 혹시 내가 우리의 아이를 좋아하지 않는다면 어쩌지, 하는 걱정은 종종 나를 크게 짓누르는 문제였으니. 다행히 솜이의 첫 모습과 마주하자 마자 크게 터져나온 울음과 함께 이 걱정은 없던 게 되어버렸지만, 여전히 가끔은 그 순간의 걱정을 비록 먼 발치에서지만 바라보곤 한다. 혹시, 우리의 아이가 내게 있어 그만큼의 마음을 움직이게 만들 존재가 아니었다면 나는 얼마만큼의 무게감을 발등에 실어 움직일 수 있을지. 때때로 양육과 함께 하는 일상이 제법 무겁다는 걸 실감할 때마다 이 타인의 걱정일지 모를 무언가를 끄집어 올리곤 한다. 혹여 조금 더 준비가 미흡한, 정돈되지 못한 삶 속에서 맞닥뜨린 이 놀라운 존재 또한 지금과 같은 그대로였을지. 아이와 함께 하는 삶은 정돈이라는 관념과 가장 먼 거리에 위치하며, 이는 행복과 별개의 문제이다. 문명과 기술의 발달이 우리에게 많은 시간을 허락하지만, 이는 현재로선 주어지는 것보단 획득하는 것에 더 가까운 듯 싶다. 효율과 효용을 위해 시간을 분 단위까지 통제하여 활용하는 행위가 내면화되면 동일한 시간을 더 빠른 템포로 감각하게 되니까. 육아는 정확히 이의 대척점에 존재한다. 내가 아닌 타인을 돌본다는 행위가 으레 그러하지만, 그 대상이 자기 제어가 어려운 아이라는 건 통제엔 더없이 치명적 요소일테니. 쉬이 말해 아이와 함께하는 동안의 나의 시간은 반사적인 수행 정도가 전부일 뿐인 가장 느린 템포의 시간이어야 한다. 그래야 언제 어떻게 발생할지 모를 미지의 상황과 마주할 수 있으니까. 앞서 언급한 가장 큰 걱정의 요인은 이 지점에 있었다. 여러 요소 - 라고 하지만 기본적으로는 능력 - 로 형성된 물리적 또는 정신적 부채로 인해 전력을 다해 살아야 한다는 강박이 살아있던 내게 통제의 대상이 될 수 없는 내 시간이 늘어난다는 건 아마도 공포와 비슷하기도 했으니. 단순히 휘발적 유희 따위로 표상되는 다른 즐거움이 많아서, 로 넘기기엔 양육이란 행위에 투영되는 거부감 중 공포가 큰 몫을 차지하고 있다는 점은 흘려넘기기 어렵다. 가장 큰 문제로 여기는 점들이 윤택함을 전승할 수 없는 현실에 대한 비관이겠지만, 당장 내게 닥칠 위해 - 로 여겨지는 것들 - 또한 그 공포의 대상이 되긴 어렵지 않다. 어느 사회든 그러하겠지만, 우리 사회 또한 같은 자리에서 '더' 나은 존재들을 필요로 한다. 우리에게 조금 다른 점이 있다면, 그 '더'를 위한 의지를 그 어떤 것보다 우선시할 수 있는 이상향. 그런 '더'를 위해 중시되는 건 여러 요소들이 있겠지만, 대부분이 자기통제성의 영역으로 귀결된다. 내 모든 시간과 자원이 근면을 향해 열려있음을 덕목으로 하는 사회상. 단순히 노동시간을 최대화하는 게 아닌, 내 남겨진 모든 시간이 나를 상승하게 만들며 강한 관성으로 나를 붙들어놓을 수 있게 만드는 게 덕목인 세상. 이러한 세계관에서 양육을 비단 삶의 연속된 과정으로만 여김이 아닌 올곧아야 할 선로에서의 이탈로 여기는 이들이 발생하는 걸 비난할 수 있을까. 통제력을 향한 그 어떤 부침도, 또는 시간의 공백도 결손으로 평가될 수 있을 냉엄함이 여전히 - 혹은 더욱 - 통용되는 이 시대에. 솜이의 탄생과 맞물려 들어온 환담들 가운데 마음을 어지럽히던 몇 마디들이, 이를테면 남편된 내 입장에선 육아에 대한 물심 양면의 할애를 대폭 줄이고 생업에 매진해야하며 이게 진정으로 아이를 위하는 자세 - 를 부연하기 위해 심지어 신생아 시기에 남편이 할 수 있는 게 뭐가 있겠냐는 첨언까지 들어가며 - 일 거란 이야기였다. 2020년대에 조차 이러한 언사를 덕담의 형식을 빌려 건넬 수 있다는 것 또한 안타까운 일이지만, 아마도 사회인된 자격인 자기통제력의 유지를 촉구함이 발화의 숨은 의미임을 생각해본다면 양육이란 행위가 사회적으로 내면화된 형태 또한 짐작해볼 수 있다. 물론 세상에 아이를 키워내는 것만큼 가치있는 일은 없으리라는 명제엔 - 드디어 부모의 입장이 되고 난 이후라 하는 말일 수도 있겠으나 - 동의하는 바이지만, 개인의 존엄을 가치의 총합으로 환산할 수 없으며, 나의 삶이 어느 한 공간에서만 이루어지는 건 아니니까. 부분의 합이 전체가 아닌 것처럼. 하물며, 우리 사회의 준엄한 이성이 아이를 그토록 가치있는 존재로 여겨오긴 했을까. 충동적이며 자기통제력이 없는, 그래서 - 발화자 자신이 행사해야 할 필요가 있는 - 외압에 의한 외부적 통제가 필요한 우리 바깥의 타자, 정도가 아이라는 존재를 향한 단면으로 여겨지는 언사는 어디서든 목격할 수 있다. 비단 혐멸의 물결과 함께 하는 2020년대만이 아닌 이번 세기 전반을 위시한 언어에서. 어리석은 어린 존재들을 향한 희화화는 필시 지난 세기 말부터 횡행했으며, 초글링, 개린이 따위로 드러나던 집단적 타자화의 결과물 또한 제법 오랜 시간 형성되어온 작품들인 점을 떠올려본다면. 최근의 심각한 출생 실태로 인해 아이를 소중히 하자는 언사들이 표어마냥 역설되고 있긴 하지만, 아이와 함께 하는 삶이 모범적 현대인의 습속과 맞닿아 있는 지는 지금도 의문스럽다. 여전히 아이와 그의 주양육자를 위시한 이미지를 진상, 촉법, 도로 교통의 무법자 등으로 연결지어 소비하는 사례에는 의도 없는 한두번의 클릭미스만으로 충분히 도달할 수 있으니. 심지어 개인의 내적 완결성을 유지 혹은 확보하기 위해 문제시 되는 가족 구성원 - 식당에서 아이가 울때 울음을 달래러 구석으로 달려갈때는 보지 못했지만 한참이 지나 달래고 돌아올때 주변에서 "아이구 다 울었구나"라는 부드러운 눈빛으로 바라봐주시던 시선들과,
아이가 우니까 요구르트며, 과자며 안겨주시면 "아들 엄마아빠 속썩이지말고 뚝해야지"라고 달래주시던 주변분들을 보면서 세상은 내 생각보다 날카롭지 않다는걸 알게 되었습니다.
그리고 주말에는 서울대공원입니다.
날씨좋을때 어서 서울대공원을 다녀오십시오. 꼭 정문부터 올라가셔야 즐겁습니다. 절대 그게 힘들어서 저만 죽기 싫어서 이렇게 말씀드리는건 아닙니다.
