1. 탈당 쇼크가 덮친 날 오후, 문재인 대표는 페이스북에다 자신의 심경과 다짐을 짤막하게 올렸습니다. <파도에 흔들릴지라도 가라앉지 않습니다>라는 제목의 이 글은 당연히 모든 언론에 기사화되었습니다. 헤드라인을 놓고 세 가지 정도의 '야마'가 경합을 했는데, "정말 정치가 싫어지는 날이다", "호랑이 등에서 내릴 수 없다", "파도에 흔들릴지라도 가라앉지 않는다"입니다.  개중 귀에 가장 쏙 들어오는 것은 아무래도 "정치가 싫어지는 날"입니다. 게다가 첫 문장입니다. 바빠서 뉴스를 볼 틈이 없는 친구가 "야 문재인이 뭐래? 시간 없으니까 완전 짧게 말해줘" 하고 물어본다면, 지지자나 적대자가 아닌 입장에서 또는 뉴스 헤드라인만 본 상태에서 가장 편하게 별 생각 없이 대답할 수 있는 문구이기도 하죠. "어, 정치가 싫어진대." 그 친구가 계속 바쁜 상태라면 아마 아직도 그는 문재인이 정치혐오증에 걸렸구나 쯧쯧 하고 있을 수도 있습니다. 방관자나 적대자들에게는 냉소와 반감을 불러일으킬 수 있는 위험한 워딩입니다. 하지만 지지자들에게는 안타까움과 애처로움이 더 크게 다가올 수도 있겠습니다. 두번째, "호랑이 등에서 내릴 수 없음"은 셋 중에서 가장 대중적인 클리셰이며 또한 가장 약한 포인트입니다. 논리상으로는 내가 원치 않지만 상황이 긴박하니 어쩔 수 없다는 수동적인 보고입니다. '나 무지 힘들다'와 '총선승리로 간다', 이 둘 사이를 연결하는 '그래도, 하여간, 이렇게 된 이상' 과 같은 진부한 접속사입니다. 여기에선 현재의 상황 A와 미래의 전망 B 사이에 어떤 구체적인 판단이나 결단도 보이지 않습니다. 하지만 이말년의 "이렇게 된 이상 청와대로 간다!"를 떠올려 보면 이 접속사라는 것이 적절한 타이밍에 적절한 사람에 의해 적절하게 사용되기만 하면 얼마나 엄청난 효과를 발휘하는지 알 수 있습니다. 앞서의 모든 XX스러운 버스 내 상황 A를 한 마디로 정리하고 의외의 결론 B로 비약하는 디딤돌이 될 수도 있는 것입니다. 하지만 "호랑이 등..."은 그런 비약을 이루어내지 못합니다. 세번째, "파도에 흔들려도 가라앉지 않는다"는 형식상 이 글의 핵심입니다. 어찌나 강조를 하고 싶었던지 짧은 글 속에서 세 번이나 반복되고 있습니다. 제목으로 나오고, 본문 중간에 인용 따옴표를 쳐서 나오고, 잇달아서 괄호 안에 라틴어(Fluctuat nec mergitur)로 병기됩니다. 문제는 세 번이나 되풀이되는 이 문구가 어쩐지 영 울림이 없다는 것입니다. 하물며 '가만 있자 그렇지 친절하게 원문을 병기해주자...' 그토록 다급한 상황에서 정치인이 인용구를 검색하고 영타를 치고 괄호를 치고 그러고 앉아 있다면 당신 참 한가해 보이오 하는 소리를 듣기 쉽습니다.  2. 그가 한가한 김에 나도 좀 한가하게 삼천포로 흘러가보자면 FLUCTUAT NEC MERGITUR는 여러 기사들에 짤막하게 소개된 것처럼 파리 시를 상징하는 모토입니다. 거친 파도 위에 떠 있는 배 한 척의 그림이 중세 이래 파리 시의 방패 문장인데, 배 아래 펼쳐진 리본에 이 문구가 적혀 있습니다. 파리가 바다와 면해 있지도 않은데 왜 배가 상징인가 하면, 센 강을 따라 선단을 꾸렸던 유서 깊은 상인 조합의 문장을 물려받았기 때문입니다. 상인 계급의 좌우명답게 씩씩하게, 긍정적으로, 단순한 운율로, 과감히 초월번역해 주어야 느낌이 삽니다. 파도에 흔들려도 우리는 건재하다, 그 어떤 풍랑에도 굴하지 않으리.... 그리고 글을 쓸 때 굳이 라틴어 원문을 인용하고 싶으면 전체를 대문자로 오피셜하게 써주는 게 좋습니다. 방패 문장에 대문자로 씌어진 이런 모토는 문장을 구성하는 그림의 일부이자 사람들의 입에 오르내리는 일은 거의 없는, 변하지 않도록 박제된 언어이기 때문입니다. 서울대의 모토인 VERITAS LUX MEA가 서울대생들의 삶과 관심사에 아무런 영향을 끼치지 않듯이 파리 시의 모토 또한 오랜 세월 그런 운명이었습니다. 관공서와 기념물에 새겨진 공식 좌우명과 표어들을 읽어보는 사람들은 외지인이나 관광객, 유학생들뿐이었겠지요. 그러나 지난 11월 파리 테러의 대참사가 먼지에 잠겨 있던 이 모토를 다시 불러왔습니다. 해시태그 #PrayForParis 와 함께 #FluctuatNecMergitur가 나타났습니다. 파리는 테러에 흔들리지 않는다는 거지요. 위기의 순간에 국가는 호명됩니다. SNS 플사를 삼색기가 뒤덮고 파리의 담벼락에는 파도 속의 배가 그려집니다. 서구에서 배는 플라톤 이래 국가를 지칭해온 강력한 메타포의 하나입니다. "대한민국은 민주 공화국이다"를 광장에서 외쳐왔던 한국의 상황은 아직까지는 좀 낫습니다만, 언제 이것이 "총화 단결, 테러 격퇴"로 넘어갈지 알 수 없는 일입니다. 문대표가 저 모토를 인용했을 때, 그가 직접 썼건 아니면 보좌관이 썼건, 파리 테러를 염두에 두었던 것은 분명합니다. 안의원의 탈당 쇼크가 마치 IS의 테러와도 같았다는 이야기를 하고 싶었는지, 아니면 문재인이라는 정치인의 성찰적인 이미지를 비통함 속의 굳건함이란 형상으로 드러내고 싶었는지... 아마도 괄호 안에 라틴어를 병기한 것은 기자들이 검색하기 쉽게 배려해준 서비스겠지요. 어쨌건 텍스트를 인용할 때 가장 기초적인 원칙은 남의 글에 자기 글이 휘둘려서는 안 된다는 겁니다. 자기가 문맥을 다 만들어놓고 거기에 단 한 개의 방점을 찍어주길 기대하며 인용구를 초대해야지, 인용구가 가진 문맥에 의존해서 숟가락을 얹는 식으로 가면 망합니다. "파도에 흔들릴지라도 가라앉지 않는다"는 후자의 경우입니다. 비극적인 파리 테러와 이 문구가 직결되어 있는 맥락을 모르고 있었던 저 같은 평범한 한국인들에게는 퍽 뜬금없는 호소이지요. 저는 그 페이스북 글을 보고 '음 문재인씨가 가톨릭 신자던가? 라틴어를 다 쓰고...' 처음엔 무슨 성경 구절인 줄 알았습니다. 하하... 검색해 보니 아니더군요. 차라리 성경 구절이었으면 신자들한테는 호소력이 좀 있었을 텐데 말입니다. 이 실패한 인용구의 의미를 좀더 깊이 파고든 기자는 아무도 없었던 것 같아요. 제가 목격한 바로는 단 한 사람만이 이 문구에 반응했습니다. 진중권 씨가 트위터에서 라틴어 문장을 그대로 인용했더군요. 지적 허영심 때문일 거라고 생각합니다. 3. 인용은 글에서 글로만 이루어지는 것은 아닙니다. 저는 사람 자체가 인용의 유니크한 맥락을 구성하였던, 매우 드물고도 성공적인 역사적 사건의 기억을 하나 갖고 있습니다. 2012년 안철수 후보의 대선 출마 선언문입니다.  [제가 좋아하는 작가, 윌리엄 깁슨의 말을 하나 소개하고 싶습니다. "미래는 이미 와 있다. 단지 널리 퍼져 있지 않을 뿐이다" 그렇습니다. 미래는 지금 우리 앞에 있습니다.] 선언문은 이렇게 끝납니다. 솔직히 저는 안의원을 호의적으로 생각한 적이 한 번도 없었고 지금도 그렇습니다만, 출마선언을 건성건성 읽어내리다가 마지막에 이 구절을 보고는 헉, 놀랐습니다. 깁슨의 이 짧은 인용구는 안철수라는 '새로운' 미래형 정치인의 완벽한 등가물이었습니다. SF 작가의 이름을 한국의 대선 출마선언문에서 보는 날이 오다니! 단언컨대 안철수 외에 한국의 그 어떤 정치인도 깁슨을 소화할 수는 없을 것입니다. 오직 그만이 깁슨을 그렇게 스스럼없이 거론할 수 있는 살아 있는 맥락이었습니다. 깁슨이 누군지 모르는 사람들에게조차 이 인용구를 전달할 수 있는 힘은 오직 안철수만 가지고 있었습니다. 그의 드높은 지지율을 환기함과 맞물려 아주 잠시, 진짜로 세상이 달라졌고 나는 거기서 뒤쳐진 것일지도 모른다는 묘한 위기감이 들었습니다. 다만 문구의 번역에 대해서는 약간 불만이 있습니다. P.S. 문재인과 안철수의 언어 화용 상황을 답답한 남친과 짜증나는 여친 구도로 패러디하는 글과 그림을 적잖이 봤습니다. 주로 남친의 관점에서 그려진 구도더군요. 그 스테레오타입에 섣불리 동의하기 힘든 입장에서, 또 새정연 내 상황과 그들 각자를 잘 알지 못하는 상황에서 제가 그들의 언어에 대해 쓸 수 있는 글을 썼습니다. 지지하는 정치세력을 상실한 지 꽤 되었고, 정치인 개인에게 감정이입을 하는 것 못지않게 정치공학의 테크닉에 감정이입을 하는 것도 어렵습니다. 그러다 보니 너무 쉽사리 가쉽거리에만 빠지거나 정치면을 아예 보지 않고 살게 되더군요. 최소한 친구가 "문재인이 뭐랬어?"라고 물었을 때 "정치가 싫다는구만 글쎄" 하고 대답하지 않기 위해 썼다고 생각하기로 했습니다. 과거에 어떤 정치인의 글을 읽으면서 마치 내가 이 읽음 자체로써 어떤 유의미한 실천을 행하고 있다고 느꼈던 시기가 있었습니다. 그런 시기가 다시는 오기 힘들 거라 생각합니다. 그런 시기에 지금 처해 있는 분들에게 부러움과 축복을 드립니다. 받아 읽기만 하고 기여를 하지 않으면 영영 바이트 도둑으로 남을 것 같았는데, 이제 당분간 안심하고 눈팅러로 돌아갈 수 있을 것 같습니다. 이런 진지 빠는 글을 쓰고 나면 쪽팔리잖아요? 하하핫;;; P.S. 2 홍차가 만땅이넷 * 수박이두통에게보린님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2015-12-27 14:39) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다.
