이 이야기의 배경은 12세기 남중국의 어느 작은 마을입니다. 자타공인 이 동네를 이끄는 리더는 A입니다. 그의 집안은 원래부터도 못날 게 없었지만 A의 대에 이르러 학문적으로 크게 성공하여 대내외에 이름을 알렸고 진사시에 급제하여 중앙 관계에서도 요직을 맡으며 정치적으로도 크게 성공했습니다. 이른 나이에 정계에서 은퇴하여 고향에 돌아온 A에게는 딸이 하나 있습니다. 애지중지 금지옥엽으로 키운 영애님입니다. 그런데 어느날 아파버립니다. 너무 아파서 생사를 오가는데 백약이 무효입니다. A는 칼로 찔러도 피 한 방울 안 나올 철혈선비입니다만 딸이 아프면 속수무책입니다. 의원이며 영약이며 다 효과가 없다네요. 절망한 그는 용하다는 무당을 찾아갑니다. 무당의 대답은 간단합니다. 이건 병이 아니라 저주이며, 저주를 풀 수 있는 방법을 자신이 안다는 겁니다. A는 네임드 성리학자로서 무속과 같은 이른바 '미신'을 가장 혐오합니다. 그런데 어쩌겠어요. 딸이 아픈데. 무당의 처방에 따라 마을 한가운데 깊은 우물을 파고 낡아서 물이 새는 성황당을 크게 증축합니다. 더 뉴 성황당의 완공 기념식에 참가해서 테이프 커팅도 하고 완공기념 제사가 삼일 밤낮으로 계속됩니다. 우물파기와 성황당 증축도 전부 돈 드는 일이지만 삼일밤낮 제사도 돈 깨지는 일입니다. 12세기 기준으로 제사 = 동네잔치거든요. 놀라운 양의 고기와 술, 그리고 인력이 들어가는 일이지요. A는 사비(Xavi)를 털어 이 모든 비용을 댑니다. 그리고 무당이 예언한 대로 딸의 병이 낫습니다. 디엔드. 해피엔딩이쥬. 이 이야기는 당시 유행하던 괴담집에 수록된 한 꼭지입니다. A는 전국구로 이름이 알려진 실존인물이지만 실제로 이런 일이 있었는지, 아니, 딸이 있기나 했는지조차 확실하지 않습니다. 우리가 알 수 있는 것은 이와 비슷한 종류의 괴담이 당시에 유행했고 많은 이들이 이 이야기를 듣고 다시 옆사람에게 전하는 행위에서 모종의 의미를 느꼈다는 정도입니다. 그 의미는 말초적 형태의 재미였을 수도 있고, 보다 더 심층적인(아마 스스로는 자각하지 못했겠지만) 것이었을 수도 있습니다. 현대의 학자들의 흥미를 자극 하는 것은 바로 이 [의미]입니다. 우선 무당의 처방이 모두 공적 영역에 대한 투자의 형태라는 사실이 눈길을 끕니다. 우물을 파는 것이나 건물 증축, 마을잔치는 모두 마을 공동체가 함께 향유할 수 있는 것입니다. A의 세속적 성공이 마을 전체에 어떤 이득으로 돌아오는 구조이지요. 증축되는 건물이 성황당인 것도 의미심장합니다. 성황당은 마을 전체에 대한 수호신 역할을 합니다. 이곳을 증축한다는 것은 A가 마을 공동체의 안쪽에서, 말하자면, 공동체의 멤버된 입장에서 우리 모두가 원팀이며 나는 팀원으로서 책임감을 가지고 내가 할 수 있는 최선을 다한다는 메시지를 담고 있습니다. 외부인으로써 이 마을에 혜택을 주는 정도로 끝나지 않는다는 거지요. 아픈 것이 하필 어린 딸이라는 것도 주목할 만한 포인트입니다. 대개 A처럼 성공한 사람들은 심지가 매우 강합니다. 옆에서 마취 없이 어깨뼈를 깎고 있어도 눈하나 깜빡 안하고 바둑을 두는 관우처럼 그 어떤 저주와 폭력과 천재지변 앞에서도 의연합니다. 그래서 이런 사람에게 저주를 거는 것은 별 소용이 없습니다. 저주가... 안걸림 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ 하지만 A같은 사람에게도 약점이 있으니, 이런 부류의 이야기 속에서는 보통 어린 자녀와 애첩입니다. 자기 팔다리가 부러져도 굽히지 않을 사람들이 딸이나 애첩이 아프다고 하면 안절부절 어쩔 줄 모릅니다. 그러므로 누군가가 A를 공격하고자 한다면 A 본체가 아니라 딸/애첩 등을 공략하면 되는 거시죠. (이런 이야기에서 [마누라]가 등장하지 않는 데 주목하십시오. 마누라가 저주에 걸려 아프대도 A같은 사람은 부동심을 유지합니다!) 이상을 종합하면 다음과 같은 해석이 가능합니다. 어떤 공동체든 공적 영역이 존재합니다. 이 영역은 공공의 복리를 위한 곳이자 공동체의식 그잡채를 고양시켜줍니다. 그래서 공동체의 존속과 번영에 있어 필수적인데, 문제는 '공동'의 것이기 때문에 이 지점에 대한 투자를 유도하는 게 말처럼 쉬운 일이 아니라는 겁니다. 공적 영역의 존재로 인하여 얻는 이득은 공동체 구성원 전원이 그럭저럭 비슷하게 향유합니다(누군가는 우물로부터 더 많은 이득을 얻을 수 있겠지만, 그래봤자 남들보다 물 몇 번 더 퍼가는 정도 아니겠어요?). 그런데 우물을 파기 위해서 투하되는 자원은 있는 놈이 더 많이 내야 하는 게 명백합니다. 그래서 공적영역에 대한 투자는 [유상몰수 무상분배] 같은 형태를 띱니다. 이때, 있는 놈이 내놓으려고 하지 않으면... 가난한 다른 주민 입장에서 할 수 있는 일이 뭐가 있을까요? 뒤에서 욕하기. 좋은 거 생겼을 때 안 나눠 먹기. 같이 놀러갈 적에 빼놓고 가기. 지나가다 만났을 때 대충 인사만 하고 눈 안마주치고 돌아서기. A가 '몰락한 사대부집안 여식을 내가 불쌍히 여겨 거두어준 것이다'라고 소개한 애첩을 '필시 화류계의 여우일 거야' 라고 소문 퍼뜨리기. A의 금지옥엽 외동딸이 그 집 머슴이랑 붙어먹었다든가 하는 괴악한 소문 퍼뜨리기 등등입니다. 이처럼 졸렬해 보이는 조치들이 실은 마을 주민들이 할 수 있는 최선의 압박 수단입니다. 이 이상의 어떤 실력행사는... 어렵죠 ㅋㅋ '실력'으로 따지자면 다른 주민의 힘을 다 합쳐도 A보다 약하거든요. 그런데 이렇게 졸렬한 압박 수단이 실은 꽤 효과적이기도 합니다. 사람은 늘 사랑과 존경을 받고 싶어합니다. 그래서 남성향 웹소/웹툰 주인공들은 힘이 존나쎈 것에서 그치지 않고 그 힘을 이용해서 타인의 사랑과 존경을 얻어가는 형태로 쾌감을 주지요. A의 입장에서 자신이 마을 주민의 사랑과 존경을 1도 얻지 못한다는 것은 그러므로 그냥 그 자체로 굉장한 스트레스가 됩니다. 마치 힘이 존나 쎄지만 모든 일이 안풀려서 고통받는 남성향 피폐물 웹소를 읽으며 '시발 왜 고구마밭인데. 사이다 언제 나오는데' 하며 괴로워하는 독자님들의 기분과 같습니다. 하지만 A는 철혈선비니까 자신이 욕먹는 것까지는 걍 견뎌볼 만합니다. 자기가 공동체에 기여하지 않겠다고 결정했으니 그 결과는 받아들여야지 어쩌겠어요. 그런데 자기 딸이나 애첩에 대한 악의적 소문이 흉흉하게 도는 건? 랴 리건. 참으로 견디기 어렵습니다. 이런 구도에다 신화적 상상력을 적당히 뿌리면 바로 위와 같은 괴담이 됩니다. 유력자의 딸과 애첩이 저주를 받고, 저주를 푸는 방법은 공적영역에 대한 과감한 투자 뿐인 괴담. 괴담의 배경이 되는 곳이 한적한 시골 마을이라는 것도 중요합니다. 큰 물고기는 큰 물에서만 살 수 있습니다. 작은 마을은 큰 부자가 살기 어려운 곳입니다. 한 무리의 사람들이 하나의 공동체로 묶이기 위해서는 그들간의 격차가 너무 커서는 곤란합니다. 보유자산이 100만원인 사람들과 200만원인 사람들이 모여있는 곳에서는 그럭저럭 공동체를 구성할 수 있겠습니다. 차이가 고작해야 두 배니까요. 그런데 그 사이에 자산이 10조인 사람이 하나 들어온다면? 이 사람들 사이에 공동체의식이 싹튼다고? 개같이 어려운 일입니다. 이게 되려면 10조맨과 100만원맨 사이의 비대칭적 자산차이 만큼이나 양자간에 어떤 비대칭적 퀄리티 차이가 있거나 (100만원맨이 매우 뛰어난 가수라든가, 매우 총명한 선비라든가, 극도로 매력적인 이성이라든가), 아니면 자산규모의 의미가 없어지는 극한적 상황이 되거나 (모두가 함께 무인도에 난파했다. 믿을 건 몸뚱이 뿐이다) 해야 합니다. 이런 특별한 세팅이 없다면 이정도 자산격차는 극복하기 매우 어렵습니다. 그러므로 다시 반복해서 강조하면, 작은 마을은 큰 부자가 살기 어렵습니다 ㅋㅋ 좀 더 사회과학적으로 표현하자면 이렇게 되겠네요. 모든 공동체는 각자 임계점이란 걸 지닌다. 공동체의 지니계수가 그 임계점을 넘어서는 순간 그 공동체는 존속불가능하다. 12세기 어느 시골 마을의 알파메일인 A가 처한 상황이 딱 이런 겁니다. A는 마을 공동체의 일원으로서 자신의 성공을 구성원들에게 [개평]해야만 하는 압박감을 느낍니다. 개평 안하면... 지니계수가 너무하거든요. 공동체를 완전히 떠나서 대도시로 이사갈 생각이 아니라면, 조상대대로 소속되어 살았던 이 공동체를 완전히 떠나지 않을 요량이라면, 개평은 선택이 아니라 필수입니다. 개평을 거부했을 때 집안의 약한 고리로 쏟아지던 악담(이게 곧 저주의 본질입니다)은 개평하자마자 깨끗이 사라집니다 (딸이 낫습니다). 공동체의 양극화 위기를 극복했으니 A집안은 다시 편안하게 공동체에서 적당한 리더십을 행사할 수 있게 됩니다. 디엔드. 해피엔딩이쥬. 모든 공동체는 자기 나름의 재분배 시스템을 내장하고 있습니다. 그게 저주와 무속의 형태든, 수확철 마을잔치의 형태든, 소득세와 종부세의 형태든, 아무튼 있습니다. 재분배 없이는 공동체 존속이 불가능함을 우리가 알기 때문에 그렇습니다. 그런데 재분배해야 할 것은 돈뿐만이 아닙니다. 세상에는 여러가지 다른 형태의 자본이 존재하니까요 (상징자본, 사회자본, 학력자본, 기타등등). 이러한 자본을 많이 보유한 이와 적게 보유한 이 사이에서 개평 시스템이 원활히 작동하지 않다 보면 어느 순간 그 격차가 임계점을 돌파할 수도 있습니다. 그리고, 마치 비행체가 음속을 돌파할 때의 큰 파열음처럼 이러한 격차가 임계점을 돌파할 때의 파열음 또한 매우 크고 자극적이지 않을까 하는 우려가 있습니다. 연쇄칼부림 소식을 듣고 보니 문득 예전에 읽은 논문이 생각나 적어봅니다. * Cascade님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2023-08-13 12:50) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다.
