  위 사진은 《단칸방의 유령들》이라는 제목 하에 여러 에피소드를 묶어 방영한 그것이 알고 싶다 2021. 01. 30. 자 방영분의 그림입니다. 2020년 경남 창원에서 50대 초반과 20대 초반의 모녀가 밀실을 만들어 놓고 열사병이 오도록 굶어가며 죽은 기이한 사건인데, 집안 벽에 이상한 그림들이 있었습니다. 사정을 알고 보니, 원래는 두 번째 그림 같은 밝은 그림을 그리고 학원도 잘 다니고 사교성도 좋던 보육원 출신 아이가 보육원 생활이 종료되자 마땅히 갈 곳이 없어 원래 아동학대 혐의로 분리되었던 생모에게로 돌아가게 되었던 경우입니다. 그런데 생모가 이상한 건 주위 사람들도 다 알고 있었고, 아이도 생모와 살기를 힘들어해서 보육원에 찾아가 도움을 청하기도 했으나 안타깝게도 그 당시 거절됐다고 합니다. 생모와 살면서 아이는 점점 이상한 그림을 그리기 시작했고, 사교성이 안 좋아졌으며, 집에서 나오지 않게 되었고, 벽에 그리는 그림이나 모든 것이 첫 번째와 같이 기묘하게 변형되었습니다. ('단칸방의 유령들'을 검색하면 더 그림들이 나오는데 말 못하게 잔인하고 이상합니다. 성관계, 임신, 출산 과정 등을 그려놨습니다. 주의를 요합니다.) 그 외에 엄마는 똑같이 생긴 두 여자가 서로를 쳐다보는 그림, '안전해' 라고 적힌 그림, 고급 옷을 입은 그림 등을 그려놨습니다. 그러다 이유는 모르겠지만, 그들은 집을 밀실로 만들고 열사병으로 죽을 때까지 아무 것도 먹지 않고 드러누워 함께 죽었습니다. 보육원은 인터뷰를 거절했습니다. 정신병이라는 주제는 사회적인 맥락도 있고 낙인 효과도 있어 쉽게 다루기 어려운 것이지만, 대표적 성격검사인 빅5에서도 신경질적 기질이 하나의 요소로 있는 것처럼, 분명히 우리 사이에 '보다 불안정한' 사람이 존재한다는 건 부정할 수 없습니다. 그리고 그런 사람을 우리는 보통 피합니다. 어떤 관계에서 만나냐에 따라 다르지만 다양한 방법으로 피할 수는 있어요. 그런데 극단적으로 피하기 어려운 경우가 하나 있습니다. 바로 부모-자식 관계에서입니다. "저희 아버지가 정신병자예요!" 라는 소리를 과연 얼마나 사람들이 진지하게 들어줄까. 위 보육원도 진심으로 아이를 아꼈을 것이라고 생각됨에도, 아이를 학대한 생모에게 아이를 돌려보내고 같이 살도록 하면서도 큰 문제를 느끼지 못했던 것으로 보입니다. 고슴도치라도 제 자식은 흠흠히 여긴다고, 정신병이 있더라도 자기 자식은 잘 돌볼 거라 생각했을까요? 아니, 사실은 사람들은 정신병자와 밀착해서 생활하면서 주도권이 정신병자에게 있는 상황을 잘 상상하지 못했다고 보는 것이 좀 더 타당할 것입니다. 낙태의 권리를 옹호하기 위해 만들어진 비유 중에 이런 이야기가 있습니다. 어느 날 아침 잠에서 깨어보니 당신은 의식을 잃은 어떤 바이올린 연주자와 병원 침대에 같이 등을 맞대고 누워 있다. 당신을 납치한 ‘음악애호가협회’는 신장 질환으로 죽어가는 바이올린 연주자를 살리기 위해, 그와 꼭 맞는 유형의 혈액을 소유한 당신을 납치해다가 하나의 관으로 두 사람의 순환계를 연결시켰다. 의사는 이렇게 경고한다. “당신이 이 관을 뽑으면 바이올린 연주자는 죽습니다. 딱 9개월 정도만 이러고 있으면 그의 병이 다 나을 테니, 그때 안전하게 관을 뽑읍시다.” (낙태에 대한 옹호 / 최원형, https://www.hani.co.kr/arti/PRINT/865812.html) 물론 이 이야기는 낙태에 대한 이야기가 아닙니다. 저는 정신병적 기질이 있는 부모의 아이로 태어나고, 또 하필 유교적 가치관이 강한 문화권이라 오래 독립하지 못하며, 다양한 생활을 부모의 결정에 의존해야 하고, (설사 학대 혐의로 분리된다고 하더라도 위탁가정에 그 친권이 미치며), 죽도록 주소지가 부모에게 공개되어야 하는 삶을 사는 것을 유사하게 비유해볼 수 있다고 생각합니다. 아래는 제 미숙한 창작입니다. 어느 날 아침 잠에서 깨어보니 당신은 아동 학대자의 아이로 태어났습니다. 당신은 물 한 컵을 마실 때도 아동 학대자의 허락을 받아야 합니다. 그를 위해 아동 학대자가 무슨 조건을 내걸지는 모릅니다. 당신은 도와 달라고 밖에 말하지만, 그러면 버릇 없는 아이며 키워준 은혜를 모르는 아이라고 손가락질 받습니다. 당신은 아동 학대자에게 세상에 대해 교습을 받습니다. 정신병적 기질이 있는 아동 학대자의 경우, 의사는 못 믿을 사람, 경찰은 쓰레기, 인간은 외계인이라고 가르칠지도 모릅니다. 사슴이 전세계를 지배한다고 가르칠지도 모릅니다. 하지만 틀릴 경우, 당신은 물을 얻어 마실 수 없습니다. 당신의 모든 교육과 진로 역시 그 미치광이의 손에 달려있습니다. 이 세상에서 모두 기피하는 사람도 집 안에서 아이한테만은 절대적 영향력을 갖고 복종을 얻어낼 수 있습니다. 이 사실의 끔찍함은, 단칸방의 유령들 같은 방송에서나마 조금씩 느낄 수 있을 뿐, 통계로 파악되지 않는 전체 규모는 어마어마할 것으로 생각됩니다. 물론, 어느 정도는 감내해야 하는 것이 삶의 운명이고 모든 것을 합리적으로 하려는 것은 욕심이라고 할 수도 있겠지요. 하지만 오히려 원시시대였다면 아이는 달아날 수 있었을 겁니다. 부모와 자식 간의 관계를 이토록 끈끈히 묶은 것은 문화와 법, 나아가 가족 안에서 모든 따뜻하고 인간적인 걸 해소하고 나와서는 자본주의적으로 경쟁하도록 되어있는 콘크리트 정글의 면모가 크기 때문입니다. 이제 저는 독립한 지 4년차가 되었습니다. 제 모든 분투를 지켜보고 도와주신 분들 덕에, 앞으로 저는 제 가해자인 아버지와 어머니와 엮이는 일 드물게 살 수 있을 것 같습니다. 헌법재판소 덕분에 등·초본 열람 제한 등으로 주소지도 그들이 못 보게 가렸습니다. 법률상 그들에 대한 부양의무는 남아있지만, 그건 상관 없다고 생각합니다. 왜냐면 제가 진정으로 무서워하는 건 '그들의 지배권 하에 놓이는 것'이기 때문입니다. 정확히는 '그들의 목소리를 듣는 것'이 세상에서 제가 제일 무서워하는 일입니다. 저는 어느 날, 집에 갔다가 술에 취한 아버지가 전화하는 것을 봅니다. 끊임없이 빨개진 얼굴로 아빠는 소리를 칩니다. "이렇게 문자 보내." 그 친구와 연이 끊어집니다 ..... 아버지는 달 착륙이 음모라고 주장하며 영상을 보며 계산식을 적고, 저는 옆에서 공부를 하고 있습니다. .... 아버지는 이제 non-GMO 음식밖에 먹지 않습니다. .......아버지는 연세대학교 물리학과 석사 출신입니다. 9살에 절 떠난 엄마는 "그래도 널 만나 아빠가 얼마나 따뜻해졌니" 라고 전화로 말하며 계속 아버지에게 순종할 것을 요구하며, 혹여나 제가 찾아올까 자신이 사는 지역명조차 말하지 않으려 애씁니다. 저는 무릎을 끌어안고 '제가 이상해질까봐' 호소하며 울었던 어린 저를 기억합니다. 그 이유로 못해도 열 다섯 번은 울었습니다. 그리고 솔직히 말해, 저는 조금 이상해졌습니다. 저는 아마 평생 아버지의 이상한 양육 없는 시절의 밝은 저로 돌아가지는 못할 겁니다. 저는 흠결 투성이고, 앞으로도 이 흠결을 나이테처럼 안고 살아갈 겁니다. 그리고 아버지가 있는 동안 고르게 되었던 진로, 친구, 취미 모든 것은 아버지의 영향이 잔뜩 묻어있고 아버지는 저를 이상한 방향으로 계속 이끌고 갔습니다. 아버지가 의료보험공단에서 잘못 책정해서 부풀려지게 나오는 보험료를 따지지 못하고, 그러면 가스통을 들고 가야겠냐며 난 그들을 이해한다고 갑자기 소리를 지르는 통에, 제가 가서 공단에 '저희 아버지가 정신질환이 있어서 제가 대신 상담할 수 없나요' 라고 묻자 젊은 남자직원이 잠재적 진상고객을 보는 눈으로 절 봅니다. 하긴, 정신질환자의 자식은 정신질환이 있을 확률이 높습니다. 그를 탓할 것도 아닙니다. 그리고 아주 섬세하게 빌드업을 해서 믿을 수 있게 했어야 했는데, 지금 생각해보면 제가 여유도 없었습니다. 말투나 옷차림이 문제였을지도 모릅니다. 하여간 상담을 거절 당하고 자리를 나옵니다. 제 삶의 진실 그대로를 밖에 말하면 다들 이상하게 취급한다는 것도 어릴 때부터 배운 결과입니다. 저는 그 돈을 대신 갚았습니다. 하지만 과연, 이 모든 진실을 어디에 가서 이해 받겠습니까. 이 글도 어쩌면 제가 정신질환자라서 멀쩡한 아버지를 압제자로 오해하여 쓴 것으로 보일 수도 있잖습니까? 허허. ...그렇게 볼 사람도 세상에는 많고요. 정말 갑갑한 것이 술을 먹고 음주운전 사고를 내고, 어느날은 술먹고 자빠져서 대가리가 깨져서 피를 철철 흘리면서 돌아다니고, 어디 가서 기물울 부수고, 연락 안되더니 길바닥에서 자고 있고...근무시간에 술먹고 자리에서 자고 있고 그게 반복되어서 직장에서 권고사직당하고...그래도 주변에서는 가족을 욕하더군요. 가족들이 스트레스 줘서 사람이 저렇게됐다고 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ 친척들 연을 다 끊었습니다.
지금은 아버지가 늙어서 큰 사고도 못치고 해서 그냥 그러려니하고 살지마는 정말 연을 끊고 싶었던 적이 있었는데 연이 끊어지는 게 아니더라구요. 낭만적인 얘기가 아니라 그냥 법적으로 부자 관계는 끊을 수가 없뜸.....ㅋㅋㅋㅋ
지금은 이제 제가 아버지가 되어서 애들을 키우고, 저는 술을 안마시기 때문에 애들은 행복하게 크고 있다고 생각합니다만, 항상 뉴스에서 접하는 그런 소식들과 우리 아이들의 모습이 겹칩니다.
그 아이들은 무슨 죄가 있어서 선택권 없이 이상한 부모 밑에서 태어나 저렇게 불행하게 사는걸까.
우리 애들은 저렇게 행복하게 웃고, 울어봤자 정말 배부른 소리하면서 우는건데...
아이들은 다 참 예쁘고 반짝반짝 빛나는 가능성의 덩어리들인데 태어나면서부터 억압당하고 피해받고 사는 아이들이 세상에 있다고 생각하면 너무 슬픕니다.
아무쪼록 선생님도 앞으로 점점 행복해지시길 바랍니다.
그때 쯤에는 난리를 쳐도 저와 형이 어느정도 제압이 가능했죠.
이해받지 못했다는 선생님의 글에 많이 공감이 됩니다. 저희 가족도 아버지의 지인들, 친척들로부터 얼마나 손가락질을 받았는지 모르겠습니다. 처음부터 이상했다면 모르겠는데 멀쩡히 사회생활 잘 하고 평판도 좋던 사람을 갑자기 아내와 자식들이 알콜중독자라고 하면서 억압하고 강제입원도 시키고 하니 같이 살지 않는 사람 눈에는 가족이 미쳤구나 그렇게 생각했겠죠.
정말 갑갑한 것이 술을 먹고 음주운전 사고를 내고, 어느날은 술먹고 자빠져서 대가리가 깨져서 피를 철철 흘리면서 돌아다니고, 어디 가서 기물울 부수고, 연락 안되더니 길바닥에서 자고 있고...근무시간에 술먹고 자리에서 자고 있고 그게 반복되어서 직장에서 권고사직당하고...그래도 주변에서는 가족을 욕하더군요. 가족들이 스트레스 줘서 사람이 저렇게됐다고 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ 친척들 연을 다 끊었습니다.
지금은 아버지가 늙어서 큰 사고도 못치고 해서 그냥 그러려니하고 살지마는 정말 연을 끊고 싶었던 적이 있었는데 연이 끊어지는 게 아니더라구요. 낭만적인 얘기가 아니라 그냥 법적으로 부자 관계는 끊을 수가 없뜸.....ㅋㅋㅋㅋ
지금은 이제 제가 아버지가 되어서 애들을 키우고, 저는 술을 안마시기 때문에 애들은 행복하게 크고 있다고 생각합니다만, 항상 뉴스에서 접하는 그런 소식들과 우리 아이들의 모습이 겹칩니다.
그 아이들은 무슨 죄가 있어서 선택권 없이 이상한 부모 밑에서 태어나 저렇게 불행하게 사는걸까.
