오늘은 저희 샐리 누님 얘기 말고, 조금은 박사 티를 내는 얘기를 해보겠습니다 ㅎㅎ 우리는 사람이든 기계든, 어떤 시스템이든 항상 능력을 측정하면서 살고 있습니다. 하지만 그 방법들은 다 각각의 목적이 있고, 그에 따른 장단점을 갖추고 있습니다. 일반적으로 어떤 계의 능력을 측정할 때, 우리는 보통 "시험"으로 하는 경우가 많습니다. 몇 번의 테스트로 능력을 측정하는 경우를 말하는 건데요, 제한된 횟수의 테스트는 결과적으로 "최대한의 능력"에 초점을 맞추는 경우가 많습니다. 자, 이번에 최선을 다해보고, 그걸 보고 너를 평가하겠다 이거죠. 보통 이 방법은 "평가 비용"적으로 굉장히 효율적이고, 기계적으로 공평하기 때문에, 사회의 많은 곳에서 사용이 됩니다. 하지만 아시다시피, 이 방법에는 엄청난 약점이 있습니다. 보통 어떤 능력은 항상 최대값을 낼 수 없으니까요. 또한 꼼수를 피해갈 수 없다는 문제 역시 있습니다. 디젤게이트라든가, 입사시험 잘 치고 와서 트롤링하는 사람들의 괴담이라든가, 우린 이런 괴담들을 많이 알고 있지요. 그래서 사회든 개인이든 어느정도 시스템이 잡히고 나면 이 방법을 버리고 싶어합니다. 그래서 보통 다음으로 쓰는 방법은 적당한 기간을 주고 그 기간 내의 "합산"또는 "평균값"을 보는 것이죠. 대충 지난 몇년을 정해놓고, 이 기간 동안 너의 퍼포먼스가 니 능력이야 이런걸 보는 것이죠. 포트폴리오나 지난 몇년간 논문 점수라든가, 경력이라든가 이런 것과 유사합니다. 위의 방법과 비교해서, 평가에는 많은 비용이 들게 됩니다. 하지만 이 방법에도 문제가 있습니다. 이런 것들은 "얼마나 잘해왔는가"를 보는 것이라서 유사시에는 어떻게 될지 알 수가 없다는 것이죠. 우리는 항상 "내가 그동안 많이 써봤는데, 아무 문제 없었어!"가 우리를 배신하는 경우를 수두룩하게 봐 왔습니다. 평소에는 잘해오던 게 유사시에는 갑자기 비교할 수 없을 정도로 큰 비용을 발생시킬 수 있으니까요. 이런 점에서, 컴퓨터 공학 쪽에서는 Fault Tolerance(아직 정확한 역어는 없지만 "내결함성" 정도로 번역이 가능할듯 합니다.)라는 개념이 등장하게 됩니다. 만약 시스템에서 오류나 실패가 나타났다고 했을 때, 대응능력이 얼마나 되는가? 얼마나 손해를 덜 볼수 있는가? 라는 개념이라고 보시면 됩니다. 위험 대응성 지표 정도로 얘기할 수 있겠네요. 물론 위험 대응성 지표로서 내결함성이 최초는 아닙니다. 예전에도 위험관리는 특히 보험과 관련되어서 연구가 되어왔고, 사용되기도 해왔죠. 하지만 현재는 더욱 다양한 위험 대응성 지표들이 등장해서 사회 여러 분야로 퍼지기 시작했고, 최근에는 꽤나 주목받는 내용들 중 하나입니다. 아래 말씀드리는 지표 중 신뢰성, 강건성, 회복탄력성을 묶어서 R3이라고 표현하기도 합니다. 이 개념들이 주목받은 지 그렇게 오래된 개념은 아닙니다. 원래 현대의 인류는 유사시를 열심히 생각하면서 살아오지 않았으니까요? ㅎㅎ 정확하게는 모르겠지만, 제가 체감하기로는 2010년 초반 무렵부터 어느정도 언급되기 시작한 것 같습니다. 현재는 정책이나 공학 쪽에서도 상당히 자주 사용되는 개념입니다. 오늘은 학술적으로 엄밀하게 파고들 건 아니구요, 이런 위험 대응성 지표들 중 어떤 것들이 있는지 가볍게 예시와 함께 설명드리려고 합니다. 여기 있는게 전부는 아닙니다. 다만 제가 가장 자주 보는 지표들을 소개해 드리고자 합니다. 1. 신뢰성(Reliability) 신뢰성은 오늘 말하는 개념 중에 가장 처음 나온 개념입니다. 가장 일상적인 개념이기도 합니다. 학술적으로는 "필요한 만큼의 성능을 달성할 수 있는 확률"로 정의하는 경우가 많은데, 이렇게 말하면 좀 감이 안오실 수도 있을것 같네요. 말하자면 "에임이 좋은" 경우를 신뢰성이 높다고 표현할 수 있습니다. 결함이 무시할 수 있을 만큼 낮은 확률로 나면 되는거 아냐? 라는거죠. 우리가 일상에서 가장 쉽게 접할 수 있는 신뢰성은 통행시간 신뢰성입니다. 오늘 아침에 출근할 때, 몇 분이나 걸릴까?라는 걸 생각해보죠. 보통 40분 걸리는데, 지하철 한대 놓치면 10분이 더 걸리네...같은 생각 하시죠? 이것이 신뢰성과 연관이 있습니다. 이 "40분"이 얼마나 믿을만한가? 같은 거에요. 비슷하게 "승률", "출루율"같은 성공률 지표들이 신뢰성 지표 중에 하나라고 볼 수 있습니다. 보통 다음과 같은 경우를 신뢰성에 관한 내용으로 볼 수 있습니다. 일단 사고 이후는 생각 안하고, 사고가 날 확률을 평가해서, 그것이 충분히 낮다는 것을 확인하는 것이죠. · 주님이 지켜주시는 한, 천사소녀 네티에게 불가능이란 없다구! · 확고자팟인거 아시죠? 바닥 밟으시면 분제합니다. · 요즘 공콤이 삑사리가 안 나고 잘 되더라고. · 저놈은 일 시키면 잘 해서 오는 놈이야. · 무사고 1,100일 달성! · 이 배가 침몰할만한 위험요소는 없소. · 마기의 계산에 따르면 본 작전의 성공률은 8.7%입니다. 아주 높은 확률입니다. 내결함성이라는 용어가 나왔을 때 부터 가장 먼저 주목받기 시작한 지표입니다. 사람들이 유사시에 대비할때 가장 먼저 생각하는 본능적인 지표거든요. 사고 날 확률이 얼마지? 누구든 이것 부터 생각하게 되니까 말이죠. "야 내가 해봤는데 괜찮아!"가 바로 이 신뢰성이 높음을 의미합니다. 다만 이 지표에는 굉장한 결함이 있는데요, 어쨌든 그 확률을 뚫고 사고가 나면? 을 생각하지 않는 지표이기 때문입니다. 2. 강건성(Robustness) 강건성은 주목받은지 얼마 안 되는 개념입니다. 왜냐면 보통 사람들이 관심이 없는 내용이거든요. 하지만, 일단 뭔가 큰 사고가 나고 나면 사람들이 주목하게 되는 그런 개념입니다. 이 강건성은 "동요에 저항하는 능력"을 의미합니다. 이 말에서 출발해서 결국 "유고시에 얼마나 성능을 낼 수 있는가"라는 지표로 발전했습니다. 감이 잘 안 잡히실 텐데, 좀더 일상적인 용어로 "ㅈ 됐을 때 얼마나 잘 할 수 있는가"를 의미합니다. "줄건 줘"에서 "줄 것"을 최소화 할 수 있는 능력을 말하죠. 최적화 방법론으로는 최소극대화(Maximin)를 수행하는 것을 말합니다. 사고를 피하는 것이 불가능하다면, 그 사고가 났을 때 제일 괜찮은 방향을 택하자는 거에요. 예시는 다음과 같습니다. · 저번에 막보킬 직전에 글로벌로 모집한 돚거놈이 바닥 밟아서 터졌는데 다행히 공생기 바로 켜서 간신히 넘어갔어. · 바론은 먹혔지만 타워 한개 털리고 막았다. · 아까 과장님한테 잘못해서 "과자님"이라고 오타냈는데, "무슨 과자?"라고 물어보셔서 "에이스"라고 답했어요. 기분 좋아하시더라구요. · 비행기 사고 시에는 충격 방지 자세를 취하세요. · IMF때의 경험으로 인해, 한국 정부는 항상 외환보유고를 확보하는데 총력을 다하고 있습니다. 이 강건성이 확보된 경우에, 사고가 발생해도 수행할 수 있는 최소한의 용량이 늘어나게 됩니다. 교통이나 전력 네트워크의 경우 대안경로가 많아질 수록 강건하다고 볼 수 있고, 투자 포트폴리오의 경우에는 안전자산이 많으면 강건하다고 볼 수 있지요. 내진설계, 격벽설계 등 유사시의 피해를 줄이는 설계들이 바로 이 강건성을 고려한 내용들입니다. 안전성에 대해 대표적인 지표로서, 보안과 관련된 지표이기도 합니다. 사람들은 보통 에임이 빗나갔을 때 피해를 덜 보기를 생각하기 보다 에임을 잘 맞추는 것을 추구하기 때문에, 굉장히 명확하고 확실한 지표임에도 불구하고 그동안 크게 주목받지는 못했습니다. 하지만 2010년대 무렵쯤 부터 여러 분야에서 주목을 받기 시작한 지표입니다. 사회가 복잡화되면서, 시스템 실패가 일어났을 때의 비용 역시 증가하게 되고, 그에 따라 자연스럽게 주목받기 시작했습니다. 3. 회복성(Restorability) 회복성은 사고 이후에 떨어진 계의 성능이 얼마나 빠르게 정상화되느냐를 의미합니다. 사실 이 개념보다는 아래에서 설명할 회복탄력성 개념이 이 개념을 대부분 포괄하고 있기 때문에, 자주 언급되는 내용은 아닙니다. 보통 어떤 사고가 발생하면 시스템의 성능은 일시적으로 저하되게 됩니다. 이것을 얼마나 빠르게 정상화하느냐도 굉장히 중요한 얘기죠. 회복성은 바로 이것에 대한 내용입니다.
