촬영 스튜디오에 대해 평소 느꼈던 몇 가지 생각들을 두서 없이 풀어 봅니다. 생소한 용어들이 많으실 수 있으나 그냥 이런 세계도 있구나 정도로, 재미로 읽어주세요. * 본문에 나오는 사진들은 모두 예시를 위해 검색으로 찾은 것들입니다. #들어가며 평소 촬영 스튜디오를 찾으실 일은 많지 않으시죠? 우정/가족 사진이나 웨딩 포토 등 이벤트로 이용하는 정도를 빼면 보통 스튜디오를 찾을 일은 적습니다. 저 역시 마찬가지였는데요. 지금 와서 생각하면 찍는 입장이든 찍히는 입장이든 스튜디오라는 곳을 찾고 들어가기까지의 문턱이 생각보다 높은 것 같아요. 손을 잡혀 따라가 봐야 비로소 어떤 곳인지 알 수 있기 때문입니다.  스튜디오에 가면 여러 장비들이 구비되어 있어요. 막 어려운 건 아닌데 처음 보는 입장에선 이게 뭐가 뭔지 싶죠. 개중 사진 촬영 전문 스튜디오는 빛이 계속 유지되는 지속광보다 한 번에 번쩍하고 터지는 순간광이 메인이고, 빛을 컨트롤하기 위한 여러 보조 장비들이 함께 있습니다. 근데 스튜디오마다 장비들의 구비 수준이 천차만별이에요. #01  국내 스튜디오에 가장 많이 보급된 순간광 포멕스 E400 보통 룸마다 90x120cm 사각 소프트박스가 장착된 400~600W급 순간광 조명 2대가 스탠드에 거치되어 있습니다. 카메라와 연결할 수 있는 무선 동조기와 노출량을 측정해주는 노출계, 빛을 튕겨주는 반사판, 날카로운 빛을 더 강하게 해주는 표준 리플렉터와 빛의 방향을 어느 정도 컨트롤하는 반도어, 여분의 조명 스탠드 정도는 대개 있는 편이고요. 컬러 배경을 만들어주는 배경지, 소품으로 앉거나 기대거나 하는 식으로 쓰는 화이트 박스와 애플박스, 의자, 테이블 정도가 더 마련되어 있습니다. 이 정도를 기본 구성이라 할 만합니다. 한데 말 그대로 [기본 구성]이기 때문에 구색을 어느 정도 갖췄다 수준이지, 디테일하게 원하는 결과물을 내기에는 턱없이 부족합니다. #02 죄송하게도 지루한 얘기가 길게 나올 텐데요. #01 에서 얘기했습니다만, 구비된 순간광 조명 2대로는 충분하지 않습니다. 조명은 다다익선의 대표격이라 할 수 있는데, 현실적으로 3대 정도는 되어야 하고, 4대까지 갖춰져 있으면 웬만한 장면은 다 찍을 수 있습니다. 입체감 있는 결과물을 위해 1대만으로 촬영하는 작가님들도 계시지만 그건 의도하셨기 때문에 가능한 것이고, 아무리 반사판을 잘 보충해도 충분히 원하는 수준으로 빛을 컨트롤하기는 어렵습니다.  캐치라이트를 동그랗게 만들어주는 파라볼릭 소프트박스 소프트박스도 종류가 굉장히 여러 가지예요. 피사체의 눈에 찍히는 캐치라이트를 동그랗게 해줄 수 있는 파라볼릭 소프트박스, 서있는 피사체에 더 적합한 스트립 스프트박스, 전체를 밝혀주는 랜턴 소프트박스가 있고, 각각의 소프트박스는 종류별로 크기가 굉장히 다양합니다. 빛을 튕기거나 투과하는 기능은 같지만 좀 더 간편하게 교체할 수 있는 우산도 있습니다. 크기별로 용도가 다 다르고요. 얼굴에 광의 부드러움과 날카로움을 적절히 섞어서 결과물을 더 예쁘게 보여주는 뷰티 디시나, 최대한 좁은 영역으로 빛을 직진하게 해서 특정 부분을 강조해주는 스누트, 여러 문양 등을 섞으며 특수효과를 내주는 고보가 있습니다. 빛의 직진성을 더하기 위해 조명에 허니컴 그리드를 부착하기도 합니다. 빛을 반사해주는 반사판도 종류가 여러 가지입니다. 흰색, 실버색, 골드색의 용도가 다르고, 이게 평면이나 곡면이냐에 따라 용도가 또 다르고, 빛을 차단하는 라이트 커터라는 것도 있습니다. 인체 사이즈 전부에 빛을 영향을 주기 위해 사용하는 브이플랫도 있습니다. 역시 크기가 천차만별입니다.  전신 크기 이상으로 빛을 반사해주거나 흡수해주는 브이플랫 스튜디오에선 조명을 위에서 아래로 내리꽂는 탑 라이트 사용 비율도 높기 때문에, 붐 스탠드가 필요하고요. 붐 스탠드까지 갖추지 못하면 아쉬우나마 C스탠드에 암을 달아서 그 역할을 대신하기도 합니다.  탑 라이트 사용을 용이하게 해주는 붐 스탠드 뭔가 꽤 많아 보이지만 다 기성품으로 구입할 수 있으며 특별한 도구들은 아닙니다. 저만 해도 위에 얘기한 수준의 장비들은 모두 사용하거든요. 실제로는 이보다 훨씬 많은 조명 장비들이 있고, 상업 광고 수준으로 가면 아예 오리지널 도구를 만드시기까지 하죠. 그쯤 되면 차원이 달라지지만요. #03 요즘 스튜디오에서는 사진 전문이라도 지속광 조명을 조금씩 갖춰두는 편입니다. 이런 지속광 조명은 (아예 영상 촬영을 전문으로 하는 스튜디오가 아니라면) 스튜디오에 놀러와서 사진을 예쁘게 찍고 싶은 일반인들을 위한 것이죠. 얘기가 약간 새긴 합니다만, 일반인들에 대한 문턱을 낮추기 위해 스튜디오와 파티룸을 함께 운영하는 사례도 늘고 있습니다.  파티룸 예시 아무튼 순간광은 빛이 터진 후라야 촬영 결과물을 정확히 알 수 있기 때문에 직관적이지 않습니다. 때문에 경험이 없으면 어렵고 막막하기도 합니다. 하지만 지속광은 빛이 계속 켜져 있으니 이리저리 조명을 옮기면 시각적으로 바로 알 수 있어서 훨씬 직관적인 게 큰 장점입니다.  지속광 조명 예시 그러면 지속광 조명으로 다 갖춰두지 왜 순간광이 기본이냐? 뭐, 가격적인 면도 있고요. (대개 지속광이 더 비쌉...) 순간광은 원기옥을 모아 한 번에 터뜨리는 거라 광량이 아주 세지만 지속광은 순간광에 비해 광량이 턱없이 작습니다. 순간광을 쓸 때는 보통 조리개 8~11 정도로 놓고 사진을 찍는다면 지속광으로는 잘해야(=소프트박스 없이 표준리플렉터 끼고 알전구 상태로 찍어야) 5.6정도로 놓고 찍을 수 있습니다. 소프트 박스 같은 디퓨징 툴을 끼우게 되면 적어도 광량이 절반 이하(1스탑)로 감소하기 때문에 이래저래 해보면, 절대적 기준은 아니지만 같은 와트수를 기준으로 대충 비교하면 적어도 4~8배(2~3스탑) 정도의 광량 차이가 발생합니다. 그리고 이는 결과물의 퀄리티와 직결됩니다. 허용치가 높으면 이를 자유롭게 컨트롤할 수 있지만 허용치가 낮으면 그만큼 표현에 제약이 생긴다는 정도로 보시면 좋을 거예요. 아무튼 두 가지는 비교할 수 없다. 용도도 다르다 정도로 정리할 수 있겠습니다. 여담인데 스튜디오에서 조리개를 비교적 많이 조이고 사진을 찍는 이유는, 스튜디오 사진은 기본적으로 출력을 목적으로 하기 때문에 보케가 너무 강한 것이 좋은 결과물을 얻어내는 데에 유리하지 않기 때문이고요. 또 대개의 렌즈에서 가장 화질이 좋은 구간이 조리개 8 정도라서 보다 선명한 최상의 결과물을 얻어내기 위한 목적도 있습니다. iso 100, 조리개 8, 셔터스피드 1/125s. 반드시 이렇게 찍어야 할 이유는 없지만, 국내에 보급된 순간광 중 포멕스 제품 비중이 지배적이라 대체로 이런 세팅으로 찍는 것이 기본으로 자리 잡았습니다.  보케는 보기엔 예뻐 보이지만 출력물을 기준으론 (특별히 의도하지 않은 이상) 권할 만하지 않다. #04 촬영 스튜디오는 무인/유인으로 나뉩니다. 다 그렇다는 건 아닌데, 무인 스튜디오는 임대업 개념으로 접근하시는 분들이 많고요. 비교적 최근에 생긴 것으로 가격이 저렴한 대신 스튜디오 관리 수준이 좀 덜하고 장비들 수준도 많이 떨어지는 편입니다. 때문에 관리하시는 분들의 전문성도 부족한 경우가 많아서, 예를 들어 스튜디오인데 구비된 장비 수준이 형편없다거나(스튜디오에 xx 있나요? 물어보면 도리어 xx가 뭐예요? 하고 되물으시는 경우도), 투자 비용을 낮추려는 것도 있어서 플리커가 있는 조명을 쓰는 경우도 흔하게 발견됩니다. 요런 건 진짜 최악이죠. 유인 스튜디오는 촬영 공간을 꾸리시다가 그것만으로도 유지가 쉽지 않으니 공간 임대 플랫폼을 통해 임대료 정도는 충당해보자는 차원으로 오픈하시는 경우가 상당히 많습니다. 항상 관리자가 상주하고 있고, 그때 그때 필요한 걸 물어보면 즉각적으로 도움을 주시는데요. 사무실과 촬영장이 분리되어 있지 않다면, 촬영 도중 아무래도 신경이 쓰여서 조금 불편하기는 합니다. 딴 얘기로 잠깐 새면, 카메라 업계 매출은 해마다 꾸준히 감소 중입니다. 그래서 시장은 아예 상업 용도의 하이엔드 시장이나 마니아 시장을 노리는 식으로 재편되었고, 카메라 브랜드에서 구색을 맞추기 위해 내놓는 보급형 기기 정도를 빼면 대중을 겨냥한 시장이 사장되는 중입니다. 극소수의 프로와 소수의 마니아가 있고 다수는 스마트폰 정도로 충분해졌기 때문이죠. 영상 시대가 되면서 브이로그용 액션캠 같은 것도 많이 나옵니다만 이 주제랑은 별개인 듯하여 패스하고요. 촬영 스튜디오는 주로 상업 작가나 마니아들이 이용하게 되는데요. 이런 계층은 호리존 같은 밋밋한 배경이거나 이용 자체에 아주 특별한 메리트가 있지 않는 이상, 한 번 방문한 스튜디오를 어지간하면 다시 찾지 않습니다. 늘 새로운 결과물을 원하기 때문에 한 번 방문한 곳은 매력이 확 떨어지는 것이죠. 대체 장소 또한 많기 때문에 매번 새로운 곳을 찾아다닙니다.  호리존 예시. 사진은 3면을 모두 둥그렇게 굴려둔 3면 호리존이다. #05 최근 스튜디오를 운영하는 실장님들은 시름이 크실 거라고 생각합니다. 특히 #들어가며 와 연관지어서 생각해 보면 카메라를 다루는 것 자체가 대중적이지 않은데, 일반인에게 스튜디오는 여전히 문턱이 높기 때문이고요. 또, #04 와 관련되어 같은 스튜디오를 다시 찾지 않는 경향성까지 고려해 보면 다른 방향의 활로를 고민할 수밖에 없죠. 그래서 개별 스튜디오도 여러 개의 룸을 이용하거나, 꾸준히 분위기를 바꿔주는 식으로 운영하고 있고요. 테마 스튜디오인데 호리존을 두는 경우까지 자주 있습니다. 또, 재방문시 할인 혜택도 같이 제공하는 편이고요. 그럼에도 분명 한계가 있습니다.  자연광 스튜디오 예시. 자연광 스튜디오 예약 전엔 해가 가장 좋은 시간대를 확인해야 한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 스튜디오는 정말 많아요. 공간 대여 플랫폼이 활성화된 까닭이기도 할 텐데, 스튜디오는 계속 늘고 있는 것 같아요. 그나마 요즘 젊은 층이 사진이나 영상에 대한 거부감이 상당히 낮은 편이고 SNS가 대단히 활성화되면서, 어디어디 가면 사진이 예쁘게 나온다더라 입소문도 타면서 스튜디오를 방문해 보는 사례가 늘기는 하는 것 같은데요. 사진사를 대동하기는 어렵고 본인들이 카메라를 가지고 직접 사진을 찍는 것 역시 쉽지 않습니다. 그 때문인지 요새 어느 스튜디오를 가든 어설프나마 지속광 조명 1~2개와 스마트폰을 거치할 수 있는 간단한 삼각대 정도는 발견할 수 있습니다. 그것만으로도 충분하지 않으니까 파티룸과 겸하는 경우도 흔해졌고요. 어차피 공간 대여인데 가격 문턱을 좀 낮추고 일반인도 비교적 쉽게 이용할 수 있게 하겠다 정도가 되는 거죠. 사실 굳이 돈 내고 스튜디오를 찾는 건 그 비용을 내고 최상의 결과물과 교환해가라는 것이거든요. 호리존이라면 누끼를 따거나 프로필 사진을 찍는 데에 최적화가 돼 있고, 테마 스튜디오라면 어떻게 찍어도 사진이 잘 나오도록, 색다른 인테리어와 여러 공간 배치 등을 통해 근사한 결과물을 얻어낼 수 있어요. 한데 솔직히 빈약한 광량의 지속광 조명을 두고 스마트폰 정도로 사진을 찍어서야 돈을 낸 게 무색해질 지경이죠. 전통적인 관점에선 그럴 거라고 생각해요. #06 가격이 저렴한 스튜디오 중에선 #01 정도만 겨우 갖춰둔 곳도 적지 않습니다. 자연광 스튜디오라면 큰 문제는 없지만 빛이 다 통제된 지하 호리존이나 지하 테마 스튜디오에서는 턱없이 부족한 수준이죠. 제 경우 스튜디오를 예약하기 전에 홈페이지에서 장비 리스트를 다 확인하는데요. 그것조차 제대로 리스트 업해두지 않은 곳도 적지 않고, 아무튼 장비가 빈약하면 제 장비들을 보충해서 쓰려고 같이 가져가기도 합니다. 현실적으로 대관료를 고려해야 하니 '어쩔 수 없지' 하면서 불만족스럽기 이용하는 거죠. 특히 호리존처럼 정말 촬영 자체에만 집중한 스튜디오라면 정말 그래선 안 된다고 보지만요. 스튜디오에서 왜 고작 그 정도만 갖춰두는가를 생각해 봤는데요. 첫째로, (저가형으로 갈수록) 스튜디오 실장님들이 임대목적으로 운영하는 경우가 흔하다 보니 구비 장비에 대한 지식 부족이 큰 것 같고요. (몇 차례 얘기했지만 원래 사진/영상 일 하시는 분들이 만든 스튜디오는 수준이 다릅니다) 조명이 많다 = 촬영 공간이 넓게 필요하다와 궤를 함께 하기 때문도 있겠습니다. 단가 생각이죠. 둘째로, 그 정도로도 충분하다고 느끼기 때문인 것 같습니다. 입문하는 입장에서는 어느 정도 맞는 말이기도 합니다. 처음 스튜디오에서 소프트박스를 거친 순간광으로 찍힌 사진을 보면 "오~" 소리와 함께 "이거 나 맞아?"가 절로 나올 겁니다. 실상은 정말 별 거 아니지만 처음 조명뽕(?)을 제대로 느껴보는 순간의 감동은 분명히 있으니까요. 셋째로, 스튜디오 이용자 중에 소위 [기본 구성]마저도 제대로 못 쓰는 경우가 많더라고요. 보통 집에 평범하게 두고 쓰기는 어려운, 평소 잘 접하지 못하는 물건이라 관리자가 도와줘야 쓸 수 있으니까요. 쓰기만 해서 끝나는 것도 아니고 (조금만 공부하면 그다지 난이도가 높지는 않지만) 빛에 대한 이해가 뒷받침 되어야 결과물을 컨트롤 할 수 있으니 어려움은 커질 수밖에 없죠. [고작 사진 15~20분을 찍기 위해 40분 동안 조명을 세팅한다는 개념은, 사진이란 그냥 찰칵 누르기만 된다고 여기는 입장에서, 경험하지 않고는 쉽게 받아들여지기 힘들죠.] 때문에 스튜디오에서도 그냥 속편하게 지속광 조명을 구비해두는 것이고요. #나오며 딱히 결론을 내려고 쓴 글은 아니기 때문에 급히(...) 마무리 해보면요. - 촬영 스튜디오에는 순간광 조명이 구비되어 있고, 이런 순간광은 어디까지나 사진을 위한 것입니다. 영상에선 활용 가능한 것이 아니에요. - 순간광은 직관적이지 않습니다. 결과물을 미리 확인하기 어렵고 터지고 난 뒤 확인할 수 있으니까 더 어려움을 느끼게 됩니다. 조금 연습하면 금방 익숙해지는 것이지만, 찍히는 입장에선 당연히 잘 모를 것이고 찍는 입장에서도 그 조금의 접근조차 보통의 경우에 쉽지 않다는 게 스튜디오로 향하는 문턱을 높이는 점입니다. - 그 때문에 지속광 조명을 갖춰준 스튜디오들이 많습니다. 조명을 공부하는 입장에서는 눈에 상시로 보이는 지속광 조명만한 게 없습니다. 지속광 조명으로 빛의 성질을 친숙하게 공부할 수 있습니다. 스튜디오를 차리는 목적이나 스튜디오의 이용자 등을 고려하면, 입문자나 일반인을 고려하여 지속광 조명을 갖춰두는 것까지는 당연히 그럴 수 있다고 치는데요. 스튜디오라는 곳은 장비가 없어도, 방문하여 양질의 결과물을 뽑아주기 위한 곳이거든요. 시간당 3~4만원 정도의 대관료로도 일정 수준 이상의 장비를 갖춘 곳이 생각보다 많지 않다는 건 꽤 아쉽더라고요. 그래서 촬영할 때마다 공간 면적(예를 들어 호리존의 가로x세로x높이와 촬영이 가능한 슈팅거리 등을 다 고려)과 구비된 장비, 대관료를 종합적으로 따지게 되더라고요. 여기도 역시 진리의 가성비가... * Cascade님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2023-05-14 18:51) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다.
