시키지 않았을 때 다미의 옆구리에 코를 박으면 나는 꼬순내와 녀석의 입냄새, 엉덩이에서 꼬리로 이어지는 부분을 주물러 줄 때에 그 반응과 잠들었을 때 쌔근거리던 숨소리, 장판 위를 총총거리며 걸을 때 나던 그 발소리의 고유한 리듬까지도. 만약 이모부가 연휴 사이에 돌아가셨더라면, 나는 혼자 괴로워하다 주검이 되어버린 다미를 마주해야 했을 것이다. 그 상상은 존재만으로도 내 횡격막을 갈비뼈째로 잡아뜯어내는 기분을 느끼게 한다. 노무사 시험을 처음 떨어졌을 때 내 책상에 앉아있으면 창문 너머로 멀리 남산타워가 보였다. 1년이라는 아까운 시간과 고통스러운 노력들, 전념하기 위해 끊어버린 모든 인간관계. 그 날들에 대신 들어찰 수 있었던 모든 가능성을 비용삼아, 나는 슬롯머신을 돌렸고 실패했다. 며칠 동안 위장에 술을 들이부으며 혼자 조용히 울부짖을 때, 다미는 언제나처럼 방문을 긁고, 들어와서는 안아달라고 보챘다. 수험실패, 군입대, 첫 실연, 마지막 실연, 지루한 법정 싸움과 계속되는 낙방. 그 모든 날들에 비집고 들어와 언제나 아무런 조건 없이 날 필요로 하고, 내 옆에 있었던 건 녀석 뿐이었다. 다미는 평생을 내게 주었고, 그 온기에 힘입어 나는 여기까지 버텨냈을 것이다. 그러니 내가 녀석에게 영혼의 일부를 저당잡히는 건 공평한 거래다. 그러니 다미가 그것과 함께 죽어버린 것도, 내가 항상 녀석을 기억해야 하는 것도 합당할 수 밖에 없다. 며칠 동안 생각날 때마다 다미가 좋아했던 것과 싫어했던 것, 행동양식과 기준들을 떠올려 모아쓰고 있다. 더이상 많은 것을 잊어버리기 전에 기록해야 하고, 다시 기억해야
