소소하게 학원에서 아이들을 가르치고 있습니다. 2002년 월드컵 때도 같은 일을 하고 있었으니 시간이 제법 많이 지난 것 같군요. 하지만 오래한 일이라고 힘든 일이 쉬이 넘어가지는 않는 것 같습니다. 수학, 영어같은 필수 교과목이 아니여서 코로나로 제법 힘든 2년의 시간을 보냈습니다. 그래도 올해 1월부터는 점차적으로 회복되어 이제는 코로나 이전 상황까지 회복된 상태입니다. 올해 1월부터 가르치던 아이가 있습니다. 초등 3학년 남자 아이인데 첫 수업부터 좀 눈에 띄었습니다. 동네 아저씨들한테서 볼 수 있는 언행이 보였습니다. 좋지 않은 쪽으로요. 그래도 같은 수업시간에 얌전하고 착실한 단짝 친구가 있었고, 차차 나아지겠지하는 희망을 가졌습니다. 첫 시간에 물어보지도 않았는데 자기가 힘들어서 2년 전에 나쁜 생각도 해봤다고 하고 부모님은 항상 만나기만하면 싸운다고 말해주는 등...상처가 많은 혹은 자기가 상처를 많이 받고 있다고 생각하는 뉘앙스가 많이 느껴졌습니다. 특히 어른들에 대한 적개심(?) 같은게 많이 보였습니다. 지나가던 어른과 시비붙은 일 등 본인의 무용담(?)같은 걸 많이 이야기하는 아이였습니다. 저는 아이들과 사이가 원만하다보니 학부모님들한테 상담연락이 자주 오는 편입니다. "아이가 학교에서는 여기 학원만큼 열심히 생활을 안해서 담임 선생님이 문제라고 한다, 아이가 학교 등교를 거부하는데 어떻게 하면 좋을까요 ?" 등의 상담이 옵니다. 진솔한 마음을 담아 상담해드리고 나면 학부모님이 항상 감사인사를 주시고 저역시 보람을 느끼곤 합니다. 오랜 시간 같은 일을 지속할 수 있었던 건 아이들이 즐겁게 웃는 모습에 삶의 동력을 많이 얻어서 인것도 있습니다. 앞서 소개한 3학년 아이와도 사이가 원만하였습니다. 항상 그 아이가 하는 이야기를 관심있게 들어주었고 예의없는 행동을 하면 잘못되었다고 고쳐야된다고도 이야기해주었습니다. 아이 상태는 보통 중1 사춘기 남자아이들이랑 비슷했습니다. 그러다 4월 즈음에 아이 어머니로부터 "아이가 감정상태가 좋지 못한 상태로 출발하였습니다. 선생님 수업은 좋아하는 시간이니 잘 부탁드립니다"라고 문자가 왔습니다. 아이가 도착했을 때 기분이 좋지 않아보였고 다른 아이들도 있어서 계속 신경쓰며 수업을 진행하였습니다. 기분이 좋지 않음을 감안하여도 도가 지나친 언행을 보였고, 다른 아이들이 굉장히 신경쓰는게 보였습니다. 이대로는 수업진행이 안되서 저는 무릎앉은 자세로있고 아이를 세워서 눈을 마주치고 잘못된 부분을 이야기해주는데 아이가 짝다리를 짚으며 주머니에 손을 넣고 볼쪽으로 혀를 굴리며 듣기 싫다는 듯이 다른 곳을 응시하는 모습에 굉장히 화가 났지만 계속 타일렀습니다. 그렇게 힘들었던 수업이 끝나고 일주일 뒤 그 아이가 등원하지않아 지난번 일로 그만두는구나하고 생각했는데 어머님께 결석확인차 연락드려보니 손가락을 다쳐 한 달 동안 등원을 못한다고 회신이 왔습니다. 그렇게 한 달의 시간이 지나고 아이가 복귀를 한 날. 그 아이는 도착하자마자 방금 떡볶이를 먹다가 국물이 손가락에 떨어져 손가락에 화상을 입은 것 같다고 했습니다. 일단 바로 학원 냉장고에서 얼음을 꺼내고 천을 구해서 조치를 한다음 어머님께 연락을 드렸고, 어머님께서는 학원에서 조치 좀 부탁한다는 말씀을 주셨습니다. 그래서 수업을 진행면서 아이의 손가락 상태를 계속 확인하면서 얼음 교체해주면서 시간이 지나가고 있었습니다. 그러나 아이는 수업진행이 안될 정도로 계속 "냉찜질이 너무 차가워서 못하겠다 그렇다고 안하자니 상처부위가 아프다"하면서 계속 큰소리로 짜증을 냈고 주변 아이들이 불편해하는게 느껴졌습니다. 수업이 도저히 진행되지 않아, 어머님께 말씀드리고 조퇴를 시켰고 그 아이가 나가자마자 단짝 친구를 포함한 모든 아이들이 "쟤랑 수업하기 싫다"라고 입을 모아 저에게 말하였습니다. 아마도 아이들은 쌓인게 상당히 많았던 것 같습니다. 저는 일단 알겠다고 하고 수업을 마친 다음, 생각을 정리해서 다음 날 어머님께 연락을 드렸습니다. "아이의 좋지 않은 언행때문에 다른 아이들이 너무 힘들어하니 다른 요일에 1:1 수업으로 전담해서 수업을 해보고 싶다"고 요청드렸습니다. 어머님은 "이 지역 아이들은 너무 조용한 분위기만 좋아하는 것 같다. 반말하는 등의 좋지 않은 언행은 주의시키겠다. 그런데 우리 아이가 문제라고 생각하지는 않는다. 그럼 비용은 어떻게 되는거냐? 왜 요일은 바꾸는지는 아이에게 말씀하지 말아달라" 등의 말씀은 하셨고 저는 "제가 제안드린만큼 기존 수강료와 똑같이 해드리겠다"고 말씀드렸습니다. 1:1 수업으로 변경하고 초반에는 언행의 나아짐이 조금 보였으나 다시 제자리로 돌아왔고 저도 모르는 사이에 제 인내심은 점점 바닥을 향해가고 있었습니다. 아이가 20~30분씩 지각하는 일도 잦아졌습니다. 그러던 2주전 수업일에 아이가 또 지각하여 어머님께 연락드렸고, 30분 뒤에 아이가 도착했습니다. 저도 그날은 좀 사과받고 싶었는지 아이에게 "선생님에게 해줄말 없을까?"라고 물어보았습니다. 아이는 인상을 잔뜩 찌푸른 채 "늦은 건 알겠는데 뭐 어쩌라구요?"하면서 자기가 손에 들고 있던 소지품을 책상으로 던지면서 비스듬히 누워 앉아 버리더군요. 속으로는 정말 화가났지만 최대한 꾹 누르고 "네가 그렇게 말하면 선생님이 굉장히 기분나쁘다. 사과해야되는 상황에서는 사과를 하는게 맞는거다" 이야기 해주었습니다. 아이 반응은 늘 그렇듯 인상쓰고 딴청을 피웠구요. 수업을 하다가 아이한테 "30분 늦었으니 수업 30분 더해도 되는지 어머니한테 물어볼께? 뒤에 스케줄 있어? 물어보았고 아이는 "그냥 끝나는 시간에 똑같이 끝내고 나중에 보충하면 되는거 아닌가? 바보인가?"라고 중얼거렸습니다. 요 때 이성의 끈이 끊어지기 직전까지 같지만 꾹 참고 "그런말은 굉장히 예의없는 말이다. 선생님은 그런 너의 말이 기분이 나쁘다. 고쳐라"라고 말을 했고, 결국, 어머님의 동의 하에 늘 그렇듯 제 퇴근시간을 미루면서까지 늦게온만큼 수업을 더해주었습니다. 수업을 마치고 참 많은 생각이 들었는데 정리될 틈도 없이 이틀 뒤에 일이 터쳐버렸습니다. 우연히 학원 앞에서 아이 발걸음 소리가 들렸습니다. 항상 계단을 신경질적으로 팍팍 찍으면서 걸어오는 아이라 계단 쪽을 응시하고 있었고, 그 아이가 맞았습니다. 늘 그렇듯 인상을 찌푸르고 가방 끈은 반쯤 걸치고 소지품을 땅에 끌면서 새삼 가기 싫은 표정으로 다른 학원을 향하고 있었습니다. 저는 아이에게 인사하였고 "오늘은 수업일이 아니고 다른 요일이니 그 때보자"라고 이야기 했는데 아이가 저와 눈도 안마주치고 지나가면서 "알아요. 알아. 왜 다 아는 얘기를 하는거야 짜증나게!!!!" 라고 말하였습니다. 순간 저도 화가 많이 났고, 아이를 불러세운다음 "왜 그렇게 얘기하니? 선생님은 너의 친구가 아니야. 그건 예의가 없는거야. 네가 계속 이러면 우린 이제 수업을 함께할 수가 없어. 선생님이 너무 속상해서 너를 가르치고 싶은 마음이 사라지는 거 같아. 그렇게 되기를 바라니?"라고 얘기를 했고, 아이는 인상을 찌푸린 뒤 갈 길을 갔습니다. 남은 수업이 있어서 강의실로 들어왔고, 공교롭게도 그 수업은 그 아이가 예전에 속해있었던 반이였습니다. 다시 원래 수강하는 반으로 가면 아이가 나아질까? 1:1 수업에 한계가 온걸까 하는 생각에 다시 아이들에게 "그 아이가 다시 이 시간으로 오는 것 어떠니?" 물어보았지만 이번에도 단짝친구 포함하여 모두가 반대하였습니다. 아이들에겐 그 아이와 함께할 때 흐르던 불편한 공기가 아직도 남아있구나 생각을 하게 되었고 집에 와서도 깊은 고민을 했습니다. 이번주 수업만 하면 아이가 학습 레벨을 올려야 하는 시기인데 아이가 의욕도 없고, 이젠 저마저도 의욕이 사라져버려 이걸 지속하는게 과연 맞는걸까....고민이 되었고, 한 번도 제 의사로 수업을 중단한 적이 없지만 어머님께 연락드렸습니다. "아이가 학습의욕이 없고, 선생님의 대한 예의가 많이 부족하여 이번주 수업을 끝으로 마무리하겠습니다. 양해부탁드립니다"라고 메시지를 먼저 보냈습니다. 이에 어머님은 "그런줄몰랐다. 수고하셨다. 아이에게는 왜 수업이 마무리되는지 말하지 말하달라 심리적 타격이 있게 하고 싶지 않다. 그리고 이번주 수업 안하고 그냥 마무리하는거 어떻냐?"라고 답장을 주었고, 저는 알겠다고 말씀드렸고 환불안내를 드렸습니다. 몇 시간 뒤에 어머님으로부터 전화가 왔었고 이렇게 된 상황에 대한 이유를 물으셨고, 있었던 일들을 말씀드렸습니다. 어머님은 "아이가 항상 좋아한 수업이라 이런줄 몰랐다 언질을 좀 자기에게 미리 주시지 그랬냐? 다른 곳에서는 안그러는데 선생님이 너무 다 잘 들어주셔서 그런거 아니냐? 아이가 그 날따라 기분이 좋지 않아서 그런거일 수도 있었는데 그런 점은 고려안하신게 아니냐? 그리고 2년 전에 좋지 않은 일을 하려고 생각했었다는 건 무슨 얘기냐? 난 처음 듣는 얘기다. 왜 1월에 얘기 안했냐? 자기는 지금 손발이 다 떨린다? 왜 나에게 얘기하지 않았냐? 아이는 지금 누굴 카피하고 행동하는 것 같다"라는 말을 계속 되풀이 하셨고, 저는 "아이가 이번일을 계기로 변화할 수 있는 계기가 되었으면 좋겠고, 누굴 흉내내는 단계가 아니라 이대로 아이 성격으로 굳어져가는 것처럼 느껴져 걱정된다. 제가 이젠 인내심의 한계상황까지 왔다고 판단되어 수업을 중단하는게 맞다고 생각했다"고 말하고 40여분의 긴 통화가 마무리되었습니다. 이전부터 그 아이의 어머님이랑 통화하면서 느꼈던 점은 아이가 하는 불쾌한 말투는 대부분 어머님의 말투랑 닮아있다는 점이었습니다. 통화 후 스트레스로 명치 쪽에 통증이 심하게 생겨 한동안은 움직이지도 못한채 앉아서 통증을 다스려야했고, 이제 이렇게 마무리되나 싶었습니다. 그런데 몇 일이 지나도 환불안내의 답이 없자 학원 원무과에서 계속 그 어머님께 연락을 드렸었고, 나중되서야 원장님과 통화하고 싶다고 번호를 알려달라고 하였다는 소식을 들었습니다. 오늘 그 어머님과 원장님이 통화를 했다길래 어떠셨냐고 여쭤봤더니 원장님께서는 엄청난 모욕을 당하셨다는 이야기를 하였습니다. 계속 통화내내 "무슨 운영을 이딴식으로 하냐? 이렇게 갑자기 중단을 통보하는게 어딨냐? 우리 애가 좋지 않은 일을 생각했었다는 얘기를 왜 나에게 얘기하지 않았느냐?" 대부분 저한테 따진 이야기였지만 덧붙여서 더 감정적으로 원장님을 쏘아붙였고 이윽고 "사과하라고!!!! 사과해!!!!"라고 고성을 질렀다고 하더군요. 일단 저와의 통화를 정상적으로 마쳤는데 왜 저런 통화를 했는지 이해가 잘 안되었습니다. 마지막 수업도 어머님 본인이 취소를 한거였는데 말입니다....원장님은 "내가 하는 일이 이런일이니깐 괜찮아"라고 말씀해주셨지만 2002년부터 함께한 분의 축 처진 어깨를 보고있자니 너무 화가 났습니다. 제 모든 대처가 완벽한 것은 아니지만 아이에게 진심이었고 제 자신의 한계를 느껴서 아이한테 화를 크게 내서 상처줄까봐 마지막 수업을 말씀드린 것이 결국은 20년동안 함께한 분께도 씻을 수 없는 상처를 드려 술이 생각나는 밤입니다. * 아이가 자주 저한테 한 말 - 이게 무슨 x소리에요? * Cascade님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2022-11-22 10:33) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다.
