 알랭바디우는 '투사를 위한 철학'에서 철학의 임무가 ‘젊은이들을 타락시키는 것’이라고 말합니다. 바디우는 기존의 질서와 의견들에 대한 맹목적인 복종을 거부하는 것을 바로 ‘타락’이라는 말로 표현하는데 결국 철학이 가르치는 것은 지배적 질서에 대항하고, 지배적인 의견들을 거부할 수 있는 가능성이라는 것이지요. 그리고 그것을 지배 질서는 ‘타락’이라고 지칭합니다. 다이 시지애의 소설 '발자크와 바느질하는 중국소녀'는 앞서 바디우가 언급한 타락에 관한 이야기를 다루고 있습니다. 비록 타락을 행하는 주체가 철학이 아닌 문학이긴 하지만요. 이 작품은 마오쩌둥이 주도하는 문화대혁명 때에 의사 부부의 아들, 즉 부르주아 지식인 집안 출신이라는 이유로 산간 벽촌에 재교육을 받기 위해 보내진 두 젊은이('나'와 '뤄')와 그곳에서 만난 산골 소녀의 이야기를 담고 있는 작가의 자전적 소설입니다. 소설은 이들이 재교육을 받는 산골 마을이 주된 배경입니다. 그리고 이들이 받는 재교육이란 것은 소위 똥지게를 지고 나르거나 탄광에서 석탄을 캐는 따위의 일들이죠. 도시, 즉 문명의 흔적이라곤 주인공이 가져온 바이올린과 친구 뤄가 지니고 있는 자명종뿐입니다. 그나마 산골 마을로 온 첫날 바이올린을 해괴한 물건 취급하는 촌장에 의해 소각될 위기에 처하게 되죠. 설상가상으로 바이올린이 악기고, 그 악기로 연주할 수 있음을 설명하려다 '모차르트의 소나타'라는 반동(?)적인 제목을 내뱉고 맙니다. 이 소설의 특징이랄 수 있는 유쾌함(혹은 풍자)이 이 상황에서 잘 드러납니다. "소나타가 무엇이냐?" 촌장이 의아한 얼굴로 내게 물었다. "잘은 모르지만, 그러니까 그게 서양의......" 나는 횡설수설하기 시작했다. "노래라는 것이냐?" "대충 비슷한 겁니다." 나는 대답을 얼버무렸다. 그러자 즉각 촌장의 눈빛에 충직한 공산당원다운 경계심이 나타나면서 어조가 적대적으로 변했다. "네가 연주할 노래의 제목은 무엇이냐?" "노래와 비슷하긴 하지만 이건 소나타라고 하는 겁니다." "나는 제목을 물었다!" 촌장이 내 눈을 쏘아보면서 고함쳤다. 또다시 그의 왼쪽 눈에 맺힌 핏멍울 세 개가 내게 두려움을 안겨주었다. "모차르트....." 나는 망설였다. "모차르트 뭐라는 거냐?" "모차르트는 언제나 마오 주석을 생각한다는 겁니다." 뤄가 나를 대신해서 마무리를 해주었다. 얼마나 대담한 말인가! 하지만 그 대담함이 효력을 발휘했다. 마치 무슨 기적적인 얘기라도 들은 듯이 위협적이던 촌장의 얼굴이 순식간에 부드러워졌다. 기쁨의 미소를 짓느라 눈가에 주름까지 생겼다. "모차르트는 언제나 마오 주석을 생각한다고?" 촌장이 되뇌었다. "그렇습니다. 언제나." 뤄가 단호하게 대답했다. (중략) 그것이 우리의 재교육 첫날에 일어난 일이었다. 뤄는 열여덟, 나는 열일곱 살이었다. 재교육 첫날부터 생을 마감할 법한 해프닝을 벌였으나, 이내 이들 둘은 산골마을에 적응해가기 시작합니다. 그러던 어느 날 이들에게 중요한 사건들이 일어납니다. '뤄'가 타고난 말재주로 이웃마을 재봉사의 딸이자 인근 마을에서 가장 예쁜 바느질하는 소녀의 마음을 얻게 된 것이죠. 다른 하나는 서양 문학을 접하게 된 일입니다. 반복되는 노동과 생활에 지쳐가던 '나'와 '뤄'에게 꼭 얻고 싶은 물건이 있었는데, 그건 바로 또 다른 재교육 대상인 '안경잡이'가 숨겨둔 서양 문학서적들이었습니다. 그리고 그들의 바람대로 우여곡절 끝에 이 책들, 발자크와 플로베르, 도스토예프스키, 스탕달, 톨스토이, 빅토르 위고 등의 작품을 손에 넣게 됩니다. 마오쩌둥의 ‘붉은 어록’ 이외에는 거의 모든 책이 금서로 통했던 때 그들은 서양의 문학 작품을 읽으면서 새로운 세계에 눈을 뜹니다. 처음 접한 그 세계가 어찌나 인상깊었는지 '나'는 처음 읽은 발자크의 소설 중 마음에 드는 구절을 점퍼의 양가죽에 직접 옮겨 쓰고, '뤄'는 아름다운 이야기를 소녀에게 들려주기 위해 급히 집을 나설 정도 였죠. 그리고 두 소년이 읽어준 발자크의 소설에 바느질 소녀 역시 매료되어 버립니다. 하나의 생각만을 강요하는 문화대혁명은 부르주아 소년들의 교화를 위해 강력한 현실적 힘으로 그들을 시골 노동에 묶어둡니다. 그러나 발자크의 얇은 소설책 한 권에 너무나 간단하게, 이들은 타락하고 맙니다. 어쩌면 당연한 일일지도 모르겠네요. 발자크의 나라 프랑스, 프랑스어에서 '책'은 '자유롭다'는 뜻의 라틴어에서 파생된 말이니까요. 영어의 리버티와 라이브러리가 같은 뿌리인 것처럼 말이죠. 재미있는 것은 문학에 의해 타락한 소년들이 문학을 매개로 바느질 소녀를 개화하려 한다는 점입니다. 그러나 공산당이 두 소년의 교화에 실패했듯이, 두 소년도 바느질 하는 소녀의 계몽에 실패합니다. 그녀는 다른 누군가에 의해서가 아닌 자발적으로 문학을 받아들입니다. 그리고 그녀 역시 타락합니다. "내('뤄')가 발자크의 원문을 한 글자 한 글자 읽어주고 나자 그애는 네('나') 점퍼를 잡아채어 다시 한번 읽었지. 머리 위로 나뭇가지가 흔들리는 소리가 들리고 어디론가 흘러가는 급류 소리가 멀리서 들려올 뿐 조용했어. 날씨는 화창하고 하늘은 흡사 천국처럼 푸르렀지. 그애는 그 글을 모두 읽고 나더니 입을 벌린채 멍하니 서서 마치 성스러운 물건을 든 신자들처럼 네 점퍼를 떠 받치고 있었어" 그가 계속 말을 이었다. "발자크는 그애의 머리에 보이지 않는 손을 올려놓은 진짜 마법사야. 그애는 전과는 완전히 달라진 모습으로 몽상에 잠긴 채 한참을 그러고 있다가 겨우 정신을 차렸지. 그러고는 네 점퍼를 자기가 입었어. 꽤 어울리더군. 그애는 자신의 살갗에 닿는 발자크의 말들이 행복과 지성을 갖다줄 거라고 말했어" 살갗에 닿은 발자크의 말들이라니. 생각할수록 관능적이고 근사합니다. 발자크에 영향을 받은 소녀는 책에서 들은 것을 바탕으로 멋진 옷을 만들어 입고 하얀 테니스화를 신고 머리마저 단발로 자른 후 새 삶을 찾아 떠납니다.'뤄'가 바라던 예쁜 얼굴에 어울릴만한 적당한 지성을 갖춘 여자친구의 역할을 내팽개치고 말이죠. 떠나는 순간 그녀는 "발자크 때문에 한 가지 사실을 깨달았어. 여자의 아름다움은 비할 데 없을 만큼 값진 보물이라는걸"이라는 말을 남깁니다. 수잔 손택의 말처럼 그녀에게 문학은 더 큰 삶, 자유의 영역에 들어가게 해주는 여권이었던 셈이죠. 서양문학을 접한 뒤, 그들('나'와 '뤄')은 그 문학을 금지한 현실에 대해 분노합니다. 아름다움, 욕망, 인간다움이 존재하는 다른 세상에 대한 접근을 불허하고 반동으로 낙인찍은 당국에 대해 분노한 것이지요. 하지만 정작 발자크로 인해 사랑하는 소녀가 떠나 버리자 이들은 그 책들을 불태워 버립니다. 소녀가 떠나가자 문학이 사람을 들쑤시고, 불온하게 만든다고 생각한 때문이겠죠. 마치 자신들을 재교육하려 한 당국처럼 말이지요. 이 소설이 좋은 작품인 이유는 엄혹한 시대상을 유쾌하게 보여주고 있어서이기도 하지만 무엇보다 인간의 모순에 대해 이야기하고 있기 때문입니다. 인간을 규격화하려는 현실에 분노한 개인이 다른 인간을 자신의 원하는 형태로 만들어 내려하는 것이 얼마나 부조리합니까. 심지어 그 실패에 대한 대응(분서)조차 학습한듯 한 행태(마치 촌장이 바이올린을 불태우려 했던 것처럼)를 보면 서글프게 느껴지기까지 합니다. 사상에 대한 재교육이 존재하는 엄혹한 세계는 발자크의 얇은 소설책 한 권에 전복되고 맙니다. 이건 말하자면, 상징계의 억압이라는 라캉식의 도식에서 주체가 이루어야할 변혁(새로운 상징계)이 바로 세계가 나아갈 방향이 되는 것이니까요. 쉽게 말해 주체의 입장에서보아 기성의 질서를 그대로 받아들이는 것은 개별적, 단독적 인간으로서의 의의가 사라지는 행위인 셈이죠. 여기에 반기를 든게 들뢰즈인데, 이렇게 생각하면 되죠. 만약 주체를 부정당한다면? 그게 들뢰즈의 [안티오이디푸스] 에서 드러난 들뢰즈의 철학이고, 들뢰즈가 좌파들에게 심하게 까이고 있는 이유죠.
와... 너무 좋은 글을 읽으니 막 수다를 떨게 되어요. 저는 사실 들뢰즈를 좋아해서 라캉까여야 하는데 라캉도 재밌어서 좋아하거든요. 그래서 게시판에서 난리치다가 별달았어요. ㅠㅠ 마르코폴로님 글 감사히 읽습니다. 정말 좋아요. 추천 100개 하고 싶어요. 이런 글을 읽으면 저도 글이 쓰고 싶어지더라고요.
