그냥 문득 홍차넷에 가입한 후 너무 투덜거리기만 하는 거 같아서, 제 인생 가장 아름다운 인연에 대해 적어보고자 합니다. 때는 201*년. 저는 법학전문대학원 입시를 마치고 입학을 한 때였습니다. 하지만 아버지의 주취폭력은 멈추지 않았고, 급기야 제 디스크 치료비를 직접 벌고자 제가 과외를 다니고 스스로 고액과외 시장을 개척(!)하던 때, 아버지가 "용돈 좀 주라" 고 하는 모습을 보고 "아. 이 집에 있는 한 로스쿨 다니긴 글렀다."를 느끼게 됩니다. 하지만 이때 제 디스크는 심각한 수준으로, 가끔은 꺾인 새처럼 걸어야 했고, 실은 이미 대학 말기 1년 정도는 종일을 누워 보냈습니다. 그럼에도 자신의 사업 실패로 줄어든 자아를 제게서 충전하려 하셨던 아버지께서는, 계속해서 학점을 잘 따고, 로스쿨도 무조건 최고의 곳으로 가라는 식으로 강권하셨고, 저는 로스쿨 공부량이 얼마나 압도적인지 알기 때문에 살면서 처음으로 성인이 되어 자면서 오줌을 지리는 지경이 됩니다. 하하. 그러다 도저히 이대로는 죽겠다, 누군가와 말을 나눠 봐야겠다, 고 결심했을 때 생각났던 것이 두 은사님이었습니다. 1. 한 분은 학생운동과 광주에 대해 계속 해서 이야기하는 일명 진보적인 분이셨고, 인간사와 문명사의 잔혹함에 대해 계속 이야기하시는 분이셨습니다. 2. 한 분은 가르침이 너무 웅장하고 아름답고 깔끔해 소수 분야를 가르침에도 인기가 많아 항상 강의실을 가득 채웠으며, 이상하게 제가 그분 수업의 질답 담당이 되어 좀 부담스러운(?) 애정을 주셨던 분이셨습니다. 저는 내심 1번 분은 제 도움 요청을 받아주시고, 2번 분은 거절하시지 않으실까 했습니다. 2번 분은 표표한 학자 같으셨거든요. 그러나 결과는 달랐습니다. 오죽하면 저는 2번째 교수님께서 전화해서 "햄스 씨! 어디 있어요?" 라고 할 때 1번 분 연구실 앞에서 헤매고 있었습니다. 두 메일을 보냈는데 한 명이 답장했을 때, 그리도 정의를 울부짖던 1번 교수님이 아닌가 바보 같은 생각으로 헷갈린 거죠. 그런데 저를 찾아 주신 분은 2번 교수님이셨고, 저는 교수님의 연구실에 들어갔습니다. 교수님께서는 단번에 저를 꿰뚫어 보시듯 이해하시는 것 같았습니다. 저는 단 한 번도 이해 받지 못한 이야기를 했는데, "엄마는 항상 제 단점만 말해요" 라고 하자 교수님께서 "그런 사람이 있어요." 라고 하셨고, (참고로 제가 9살 때 이혼하셔서 그 뒤로 거의 안 봅니다. 근데 저를 버렸단 걸 인정하기 싫으셔서 바득바득 제가 9살 때 아빠 집에 있고 싶다 전화한 것이 인생 천추의 한이고, 그 뒤 제가 아버지와 단둘이 살며 아무리 폭력에 시달린다 해도 외면하시면서 오히려 외고를 못 간 것이 제 잘못이라는 등 저의 모든 것을 욕하시는 쪽으로 인생 방향을 대폭 선회하심.) "아버지로 인해서---" 이런 일들이 있었다 했을 때, 조용히 고개를 끄덕이시곤 그러셨습니다. "그러면 햄스 씨. 이렇게 합시다. 나랑 사는 이야기를 합시다. 누가 알겠어요? 저 위에 누군가가 지켜보고 있을지." 그러면서 손으로 하늘을 가리키셨습니다. 그리고 4년 이상의 시간을, 단 한 번도 교수님께서는 제 메일에 답장을 안 해주시는 일이 없었습니다. 아무리 제가 바보 같은 짓을 해도, 아무리 제가 징징거려도, 아무리 제가 실수를 해도, 따뜻하지만 따끔한 답신을 잊지 않으셨고 심지어는 제가 긴급하게 생활비가 없을 때는 생활비를 보내주기도 하셨습니다. 또 교수님께서도 몸이 지독하게 아파보신 분이라 제 통증에 대해서도 항상 이해를 해주셨고요. 제가 당시 교수님께 보냈던 메일의 내용이 이랬습니다. : 교수님, 제가 생과 사의 경계에 있는 것 같습니다. 그리고 교수님께서는 그 생과 사의 경계에 있는 사람을 만났고, 대화했고, 여전히 대화 중이십니다. 교수님께서는 홀로코스트 생존자들에 대해 이야기하며, 자기자신을 탓하는 맘이 있으면 안 된다고, 그래야 살아남을 수 있다고 말씀해 주셨습니다. 저는 교수님께 너무 고마워서, 그리고 주기적으로 감기 기운이 오시는 때가 있길래 산양삼 한 뿌리를 보낸 적이 있는데, "허 참! 햄스 씨 덕에 수업 전에 산삼을 먹고 들어가는군요!" 라고 하시길래, "그건 산양삼이에요, 교수님! 양식이라고요!" 라고 한 적도 있습니다. 하지만 그 다음부터 선물은 금지 당했습니다. 그리고 스승의 날을 지키면 파문된다고 하더군요. 저와 교수님의 이 알 수 없는 사제 관계에 대해서, 주위 사람들은 '대체 뭔 관계냐' 합니다만 저도 잘 모릅니다. 하지만 교수님이 있는 곳 도서관에 없는 책이 있으면 제가 구해서 퀵 배송으로 보내 드리기도 하고 그럽니다. 그럴 때 저는 교수님만의 작은 이동 사서가 되는 것 같아서 행복했습니다. 어렵디 어렵고 작은 책을 보내며 '대체 이것으로 무슨 연구를 하시려는 것일까.' 두근거릴 때도 참 기분이 좋았고요. 교수님께서 번역하셨지만 출판사의 사정으로 엎어졌단 원고를 읽고, 같이 그 글에 대해 이야기하고, 제 해석이 좋으면 좋다 하시고, 싫으면 말씀이 없으시고, 그렇게 많은 것에 대해 (주로 침묵으로) 대화해왔습니다. 교수님은 제 미숙한 모습을 관대하고 애정 어린 침묵으로 넘어가 주십니다. 그래서 가장 힘들고 외롭고 초라해 졌을 때도, '교수님이라면 지금 내 추한 모습도 받아 주실 거야.' 라는 생각으로 일어난 적이 한두 번이 아닙니다. 또, 제 기준 지나간 근대사 인물들에 대해 공부하고 이야기하면, '아 그 사람 참 골초였는데!' 같은 답신을 해오실 때가 참 웃겨요. 은근히 모르는 분이 없으신 것 같습니다. 어떤 책을 읽었다고 해도 '아, 그건 그렇지 않아요. 햄스 씨. 자세한 맥락에 대해서는 다음에 얘기합시다.' 어떻게 마무리해야할지 모르겠네요. 아무튼, 생과 사의 경계에 있을 때, 혹시 모르니 주위 사람들에게 다 메일을 보내 보세요 - 라고 끝맺어야 할까요? 실은 아직 제 생과 사의 경계에서의 전쟁은 진행 중이라, 더 할말이 없는지도 모르겠습니다. 그래도 정말 모르는 일 아닙니까. 저 위(하늘)에서 누군가 우리를 지켜보고 있을지! 뱀발은, 이것에 감명도 받고 부채감도 느낀 제가 여러 곳에 기부도 하고 도움도 줘 보고 일종의 작은 사회 개선 프로젝트 같은 것도 해봤는데 그랬더니 갑자기 새벽에 도박 빚 빌려 달라 하고, 도움만 받고 쓱 입 닦는 일도 겪고 해서 도움을 주고 받는 것 자체가 주는 측도 받는 측도 신비로운 인연으로 만나지 않음 힘들겠구나 느끼긴 했단 겁니다. 또 공공기관의 문제는 언론 보도와 같은 위협이 없으면 절대 개선이 되지 않더군요. 언론 보도를 건수로 이야기하니까 대화가 통하다가, 기사화 안 한다니까 약속했던 합의 하나도 안 지키더군요. 아무튼, 본인이 강한 사람이 되는 것이 우선입니다. 홍차넷 분들은 고생하지 마셔요. * Cascade님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2022-11-01 00:55) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다.
