산책하다 집 주변의 중고등학교를 스칠 때마다 교육현장의 수많은 변화를 체감한다. 요즘은 공립학교들도 시설이 으리으리하구나, 학교 보안이 엄격해졌구나, 교내 문화가 개방되었구나. 그러면서 한때 단순무식했던, 지금은 더 이상 단순무식할 수 없는 나를 떠올린다. 학창시절ㅡ 위계서열이 있었고 공부를 강조하던 환경이었던ㅡ에 나는 범생이었다. 자폐적인 성향이 있던 나는 친구들과 어울리지 못했고, 오로지 공부와 책과 피아노같은 혼자하는 취미에만 몰입했다. 집안도 어느정도 사는 편이었고, 부모님이 명문대 커플 출신이라 취미도 고급지게 해 줄 수 있었다. IMF 위기때도 해외경제가 괜찮아서 유리했한 부분이 있었다던 무역업계 아버지를 두었기에 말이다. 회사를 때려치우고 동종업계 창업을 했지만 여전히 잘 나갔다. 교사로부터 칭찬만 받았던 나는, 집안이 괜찮은 데다 친구들과 제대로 관계를 맺지 않았기에 세상에 대해서 피상적으로만 접했다. 아니 그렇게 접해도 되었다. 책과 뉴스로만 세상을 배울 수 있는 축복받았으면서도 끔찍하게 노잼이었던 범생이었으니. 인생에 대한 진지한 고민은 할 필요가 없었다. 그렇게 범생이었던 나의 사고관은 매우 단순했다. 가히 머리속이 꽃밭이라 부를 만 하다. 으레 사춘기 시절에 나올만한 세상에 대한 분노, 자의식 과잉같은 게 없었기에 선생님, 부모의 교훈적인 이야기를 문자 그대로 받아들였다. "공부하고 노력해라. 그러면 원하는 것을 얻을 것이다" 기복신앙이 더해진 신약성경에 나올법한 구절같은 가르침을 나는 경전처럼 받아들였다. 주술적 행위를 하면 세상이 너에게 반응한다는 단순무식한 세계관을 벗어날 필요도 없었고, 그것이 통하지 않던 세계를 상상할 수 없었기에. 고등학교 때 읽은 수많은 책들은 노력으로 어찌할 수 없던 개개인의 유전과 환경을 탓하지만, 그것을 심각하게 받아들이지 않았다. 세상이 완벽하지 않고 부조리가 존재하는 건 신문만 봐도 뻔한데, 그게 그렇게 강조될 일인가? 싶었다. 나에게 개개인의 인생 성패는 (인생) = (노력) 혹은 y = a + bx 수준의 간단한 도식으로 기술될 수 있었다. 당시 연령이었던 중고등학교 수준에서 생각할 법한 발상이었다. y는 간단한 인생의 성과, a는 디폴트값, x는 노력과 관련된 변수이며 b는 노력의 계수. 이 도식에 벗어나는 사람들은 예외로 생각했다. 착한 천성이 있었기에 가난한 사람들은 불쌍히 여겼지만, 그럼에도 노력론, 근성론을 암묵적으로 믿고 있었다. 그러다 대학에 입학했다. 그리고 10대에 가졌던 단순무식한 세계관은 붕괴되기 시작했다. 입학한 해 세월호 참사가 터졌다. 머지않아 헬조선이 유행어가 되었다. 각종 사회비판 담론이 수면에 올라오기 시작했다. 요즘은 노력해도 안 된다고, 세대 간 계층이동은 이제 없다고. 이 나라는 지옥같은 사회구조를 가졌다고. 새누리당이 장기집권하는 한 한국의 미래는 없다고. 그리고 박근혜 게이트가 터졌고, 촛불시위가 터졌고(나도 참여했다), 탄핵이 가결되고 헌재가 인용하여 조기 대선을 치러 정권이 교체되었다. 그런 세상 속에서, 나는 인문학과 사회과학을 전공하면서 사회구조의 역학을 공부했다. 두 학문 모두 수리나 통계적 논리력이 필수였기에 역학 이해에 큰 도움이 되었다. 그리고 집안도 옛날만큼 잘 살지 못하게 되었다. 서울의 변두리 구에서나마 고급 아파트에 살았던 나는, 세계 금융위기의 스노우볼로 인한 아버지의 사업 실패로 지하철역도 멀리 있는 낡은 아파트에 월세로 살아야 했다. 서울 밖으로는 안 간 걸 다행으로 봐야 할까. 그러고도 안 되서 부모와 친척들에게 돈 빌려달라는 아버지와 이를 말리는 어머니의 싸움을 지켜봐야 했다. 그것도 안 되서 개인회생 받으면서 어머니를 부업에 내몰려야 했다. 그렇게 나는 등록금 못 대줘서 미안하다는 부모님의 말 한마디 한마디를 상기했다. 다행히 국가장학금과 교내장학금을 통해 왠만해선 충당이 됐고, 군 봉급이 많이 올라서 군 복무를 통해 돈을 벌 수 있어 (중간에 아버지가 400만원을 빌려달래서 통장을 급히 해지해야 했다. 아 돈은 50만원을 제외하고 아직도 돌려받지 못했다) 등록금으로 알바해야 하는 일은 없었지만. 그런 세상에서 개인적으로 나쁜 경험을 하고, 두 전공을 통해 이론적 뒷받침을 한 나는 인생을 바라보는 세계관을 수정할 수밖에 없었다. Y = a + bX + rZ 혹은 (인생) = (노력) + (유전/환경 및 사회구조) Y는 인생의 성과, a는 디폴트값, X는 개개인의 노력 변수들, b는 노력 변수들에 상응하는 계수들, Z는 개인의 유전/환경 및 사회구조 변수들, r은 유전/환경/사회구조 변수들에 상응하는 계수들이다. x,y,z를 대문자로 쓴 것은 변수들이 너무 많아져 함수를 넘어서 회귀식이 되었기 때문이다. 이것도 내 사고 수준의 향상을 의미한다. 더 이상 나에게 노력은 삶을 결정하는 유일한 방식이 아니었다. 노력이 무의미한 건 아니지만, 환경과 사회구조는 삶의 성과를 결정하는 또 다른 중요한 요소였다. 이를 무시한 노력, 근성론은 그저 머리가 꽃밭에 있는 무지한 자의 발로였을 뿐이었다. 하지만 내 가치관에서 여전히 달라지지 않은 것이 있었다. 바로 노력과 유전/환경 및 사회구조가 개개인의 성과를 '완전하게 설명한다'는 기계론적이며 결정론적 가치관이었다. 누군가가 잘 나가는 이유, 못 나가는 이유를 완전하게 개인의 노력과 유전/환경/사회구조로 전부 설명할 수 있다고 진지하게 믿었다. 일종의 라플라스의 악마와 같은 세계관에서 살아갔다. 하지만 이 또한 허상이라는 걸 알게 되는덴 얼마 걸리지 않았다. 세월호 사건 때부터 기미가 보였지만, 세상은 갈수록 기괴하고 초현실적 공간으로 바뀌고 있었다. 평생 갈 것 같은 문재인 정부는 많은 비판 끝에 5년만에 정권 교체라는 희극으로 마무리되었다. 그리고 기존 진보 담론에 반항하는 주장들이 온라인과 오프라인 곳곳에 등장했다. 코로나라는 전대미문의 위기가 개개인을 보건, 행정, 법 그리고 윤리로 억죄었다. 한국은 이제 코로나 대응과 글로벌 문화 등 몇몇 측면에선 서구 선진국과 일본을 뛰어넘었다는 평가를 받는다. 미국에서는 국회의사당 폭동을 거쳐 군부대로 둘러쌓인 새 정부 취임식을 열었다. 선진국에선 40년 전에 끝났다고 생각한 극심한 인플레이션이 돌아왔다. 비대면 문화는 코로나로 폭발해서 이젠 메타버스까지 발달했다. 우크라이나는 러시아 정규군에 의해 침공당했다. 기후변화는 이제 세상을 끝장날지도 모른다고 많은 사람들이 인정한다. 이런 혼란의 세계에서 기존의 가치관이 더 이상 통할 수 있을까? 세상의 극심한 변화는 이와 관련된 유전/환경/사회구조 값들을 바꾼다고 끝날 일이 아니었다. 개인적 노력이나 유전/환경/사회구조가 인생에 미치는 영향력이 잘못 평가되었거나 과거와 달라졌다면 어떨까? 인생을 설명하는 데 필수이지만 무시된 변수들이 있었다면? 개개인은 예상할 수 없는 사회 현상들이 갑작스럽게 개개인에게 영향을 미친다면? 위 질문들은 사회과학 전공자는 다 알지만 회귀의 정당성을 무너트리거나 추가 분석을 요구하는 치명적인 문제들이다. 한국, 서구 사회에 대한 통념 상당부분이 시작부터 잘못되었거나 옛날엔 맞아도 지금은 통하지 않다는 불편한 사실을 알게되었기에 더 크게 다가왔다. 세계를 넘어서 개인적으로도 비슷한 질문을 해야만 했다. 연애 문제에서 시작되었다. 자폐적인 모범생 스타일이라 연애, 이성에 관심이 없었던 나는 모종의 계기로 연애를 꿈꾸게 되었다. 내 성향과 상극의 일이었는지라 가능할까 싶었지만, 삶이 무미건조했던 나는 연애에 대한 동경이 컸는지라 스스로를 발전시킬 겸 해서 시도해보기로 결심했다. 공부를 잘했던 나는 Y = a + bX + rZ 도식을 연애에 총동원했다. 장학금을 넘어 용돈 받으면서 대학원을 다니는 학생이었기에 이런 논리엔 자신이 만땅이었다. 예를 들어, 나는 연애에 불리한 성격이라 진단되어 고칠 수 있는 성격은 최대한 고쳐나가야 했다. 이성에게 인기있을 타입이 아니니 최대한 많은 사람을 만나는 게 유일한 전략이었다. 타인과 소통할 수 있는 주요 공감대를 최소 하나는 만들어야 했다. 살을 빼고 운동을 해서 몸을 길러야 했다. 목소리가 이상하니 고쳐나가야 했다. 집단에 참여해서 이성과 접촉할 기회를 만들어야 했다. 위의 것들을 이루면 이성을 '분명히' 만날 수 있을 것이다... 연애 성사 확률이 올라가는 건 팩트니까 말이다. 실제로 위의 진단사항을 지금 돌아보면 '대부분' 이뤄냈다. 이 정도면 평범한 모태솔로의 생각이라 할 수 있지만, 나는 이를 병적으로 밀고 나갔다. 연애 성사 확률을 높이려, 여기를 포함해서 오프든 온라인이든 가리지 않고 적극적으로 조언을 구했다. 연애와 섹스를 포함한 섹슈얼리티를 책이든 논문이든 공부하고, 여기 글을 쓰기도 했다. 관심 분야이기도 했지만 혹시 이걸로 연애에 도달하는데, 연애가 성사되었다면 오래 가는데 도움이 될까 싶었기 때문이다. 심지어 연애를 과도하게 치켜세웠다. 나에게 연애가 성사된다는 걸 내 결함있는 성격을 고치는 데 성공했다는 성취의 증거로 여긴다던가(대리변수proxy variable), 연애 경험이 없어서 미지로 남아있는 삶의 영역이 1/3은 된다고 생각한다던가... 그런 마인드가 없으면 포기할 것 같아서 띄웠다. 하지만 실제로 이성들이 내게 다가오자 나는 얼마나 큰 착각을 했는지 깨달을 수밖에 없었다. 두뇌 풀가동해서 괜찮겠다 판단하고 접근한 이성들과는 처참할 정도로 잘 되지 않았다. 반면에 예상하지 못한 곳에서, 생각지도 못한 방식으로 만났던 이성과는 비교적 잘 됐다. 너무 성공적으로 훅 들어와서 설레발 쳤다가 파국으로 이어진 흑역사도 있었다. 연애 관련 조언을 구했을 때 이구동성으로 한 이야기들, "안 된다고 너무 분석하고 자책하지 말라" "절박할수록 더 안 된다"같은 조언들을 처음엔 머리로만 이해했지만, 이젠 몸과 마음으로 이해할 수 있다. 역설과 모순으로 가득찬 선문답 격언을 논리적으로 받아들일 수 있다. 이제는. 그동안의 노력이 쓸모없었냐면 절대 아니다. 하지만 문제는 내가 생각하지 못했던, 혹은 통제할 수 없었던 곳에서 왔던 연애의 면모들이다. 연애는 금전이라는 매개체 없이 이뤄지는 두 인격체의 결합이기에, 나 스스로에만 골몰한 논리분석이 헛될 수 있다는 걸 나는 이 나이 먹고서야 알았다. 고백하자면 내가 전에 티타임에 썼던 https://new.redtea.kr/recommended/1188 글은 보편론이지만, 개인적인 경험에서 나온 고백이기도 하다. 연애를 경제학 혹은 회귀분석하듯 생각하다는 큰코다친다는 결론을 냈다. 그렇게 나는 세계관을 또 수정해야만 했다. Yit = a + bXit + rZit + eit 혹은 (인생) = (노력) + (유전/환경/사회구조) + (위 둘로 설명할 수 없는 영역) 추가한 부분만 언급하자면 i는 개개인, t는 시점, eit는 개개인 i의 t 시점에서 오차항이다. 오차항의 존재는 노력이나 유전/환경/사회구조 변수들로 설명되지 못하는 부분이다. 인생은 노력, 유전/환경/사회구조 말고도 알 수 없는 요인들이 개입한다. 흔히 '운'으로 명칭되는 이 영역은 현재의 지식으로는 설명할 수 없으며, 어쩌면 영원히 설명할 수 없을지도 모른다. 심지어 설명할 수 있다해도 문제가 된다. 개개인 단위에서 이를 세계관에 통합하려면 너무 복잡해지기 때문이다. 그렇게 나는 어릴 적 함수적 이해에서, 20대 초중반의 회귀식 이해를, 20대 후반의 회귀 및 계량분석으로 인생에 대한 이해를 넓혀 나갔다. 위의 운을 포함한 세계관을 받아들인 현재, 내 가족과 현재 상황, 미래를 더 편하게 바라볼 수 있게 되었다. 내 아버지가 사업을 망친 건 노력이나 능력 부족 탓만도, 금융위기라는 국제사회 탓만은 아니다. 아버지 사업과 깊게 연결된 기업이 운 나쁘게 부도난 것도 무시할 수 없다. 한국을 뒤흔든 IMF 위기의 충격에서 벗어난 것은 운이 좋았던 건데 그것의 반대이다. 나나 타인이 연애를 못한 건 운의 문제일 수도 있다. 잘 준비했더라도 안 될 수 있고 반대도 충분히 가능하다. 그렇기에 마음 편히 먹는 게 최선이며, 연애 못했다고 인격적 결함으로 몰아붙이는 건 무례한 오지랖일 뿐이다. 어느 순간부터 2O살 모태솔로라는 단어, 20대 안에 연애 한번은 해보겠다는 목표를 더 이상 언급하지 않는 나를 발견했다. 관심있는 이성은 있지만 대시하려는 내 의사는 이미 정해졌으니 나머지는 내 손을 벗어났다고 마음 편히 먹는 나를 발견했다. 내 꿈인 박사 입시, 연구원, 교수 임용은 대학, 학자들의 성향 등으로 인해 예상치 못한 변수가 많이 작용할 수 있다.
