 집안이나 자동차 등에 소리나는 부분에 뿌리면 마법같이 소리가 사라지는 그 물건! 공대생이라면 덕테이프와 함께 모든 문제를 해결할 수 있는 그 물건! WD-40, 일명 와따40에 대한 사소한 것들 몇가지를 알아보시죠. 1. 글쓴이 본인은 예전에 문과생으로 WD-40회사에 다녔었다. - 저는 WD-40을 유통하는 회사인 벡스인터코퍼레이션(이하 벡스)에서 잠시 일했던 적이 있습니다. 이 회사는 범우연합이라는 중견기업에 속해 있는 자회사라고 보시면 됩니다. 범우연합은 금속가공유를 주로 생산하는 기업으로 WD-40을 국내공식으로 수입하면서 성장한 회사 입니다. 저는 돌고 돌아 지금은 병원에서 근무하고 있습니다. 2. 관절에 효능이 있다는 미신이 있었다. - 옛날 초기에 WD가 유명세를 타면서 그 성능에 깜놀한 한국인들은 관절에도 효과가 있을 것이라는 무안단물과도 같은 믿음으로 관절에도 뿌리곤 했다고 합니다. 3. WD-40은 정확히 방청윤활제이다. - 방청윤활제라는 단어를 그대로 뜯어보면 방청 : 녹이 스는 것을 방지 윤활 : 마찰을 줄여 부드럽게 하는 것 입니다. 메인이 위 2가지 기능입니다. 흔히들 알고 계시는 녹을 제거한다는 개념은 윤활작용에 의한 부수적인(여러 화학물질이 작용하면서 생기는) 기능이며, 정확한 목적을 위해서는 녹제거제는 따로 구입하시는 게 좋습니다. 물론 가정에서 간단히 녹슨 곳을 제거 하는데는 괜찮습니다. 4. WD-40은 대부분 공장에서 소비된다. - 실제 WD-40는 가정용으로는 판매되는 비중이 적습니다. 대부분 집에 가지고 계신 WD-40은 산지 10년 넘는 것들도 많으실 겁니다. 가끔 필요할 때 칙~ 뿌리고 또 방치되는 게 대부분이죠. 사실 위 제품은 소규모 공장에서 제일 많이 쓰입니다. 작은 공장에서 만드는 금속류 제품들은 제작되자마자 바로 팔려나가는 것이 아닌, 짧게는 몇 일, 길게는 몇달동안 창고에서 주인을 기다리게 됩니다. 이런 재고들이 녹슬지 않게 WD-40를 뿌려 보존성을 높히는 방청용으로 대부분 소비 됩니다. 작은공장의 특성상 제품을 보관하는 수준이 떨어질 수 밖에 없기 때문에 간단하면서도 비교적 저렴한 방법으로 WD-40를 잔뜩 도포하여 보관하는 경우가 많습니다. - 가정용으로 방청윤활제를 구입하실 때는 사실 시중에 저렴한 아무 제품이나 구입해서 써도 성능에 큰 차이는 없습니다. 공장에서 특히 선호하는 이유는 신뢰성 때문입니다. 몇일 보관용으로는 아무거나 뿌려도 되겠지만 그 기간을 장담 못하는 제품의 경우 WD-40를 쓰게 되면 오랫동안 부식을 방지해 준다는 신뢰도가 높은 제품 입니다. 집에서 쓰실꺼면 대충 저렴한거 쓰셔도 되요. ㅎㅎ 5. 자전거에 쓰셔도 됩니다. - 오랜 떡밥이라고 알고 있습니다. 결론부터 말씀 드리면 쓰셔도 됩니다. 위에서 서술한 것처럼 주 기능이 방청과 윤활입니다. 오히려 녹이 슨다거나 마모시킨다는 말은 정확히 사용하지 않아서 생기는 문제일 가능성이 큽니다. 자전거를 저렴하고 간편하게 관리하고 싶으시다면 와따40이 좋은 대안이 될 수 있습니다. 대신 한달에 1번정도 주기적으로 뿌려주시는게 좋습니다. 그리스처럼 강한 점성으로 오랫동안 유지되지는 않습니다. 그리고 WD-40도 위 내용을 인지 했는지 WD-40 Bike 라는 자전거 전용 제품도 출시 했습니다. 물론 비쌉니다. 대신 좀 더 안심하고 전문적인 관리가 가능 합니다. 6. 전자제품에 사용하는 것은 피하는 것이 좋다. - 합선이 될 가능성이 있습니다. 제품 특성상 도포된 부분에 용액이 머무는 특성이 있기에 기판에 잘못 뿌려지면 합선이 되는 경우가 생길 수 있습니다. 전자제품에 자주 사용되는 또 한가지 유명한 제품인 BW-100이 있는데 이것도 같은 벡스에서 유통하는 제품 입니다.(BW = 범우 이니셜 ok?) BW-100의 경우 이번 글이 흥행한다면(?!) 후속편으로 써보도록 하겠습니다. 7. WD-40은 코라콜라와 유사한 방식으로 판매되고 있다. - 코카콜라에 대해서 우리가 아는 것은 원료를 미국 본사에서 받아다가 병포장만 해서 판다는 것이고 성분이 유출될 것이 두려워 특허신청을 하지 않았다는 것이죠.
