회사로서 넷플릭스의 특징 중 하나는 주주들에게 편지를 많이 보낸다는 거에요. 연 단위, 분기 단위 리포트는 물론이고 주가에 큰 변동이 있으면 관련해서 편지를 보냅니다. 특히 분기단위로 온 편지는 누구와 협력해서 어떤 작품이 좋은 결과를 냈다 이런 내용들이 많아서 보면 좀 재밌고 흐뭇해짐 ㅋㅋ 넷플릭스의 주가 폭락을 기념하여 얼마 전에 온 주주들에게 보내는 편지를 번역해 소개하고 싶었는데. 언젠가 동료가 장난으로 공문을 번역하며 '나다'로 시작했던게 너무 웃겨서 ㅋㅋ 저도 그런 식으로 장난스럽게 번역해봤습니다. 진지하게 번역해 올리면 그닥 재미없는 내용이기도 하고, 무엇보다 그렇게 하기엔 심력이 너무 많이듬. 이것도 받고 이틀에 걸쳐 천천히 번역함 ㅋㅋ 정말 정보가 필요하신 분들을 위해 원문은 첨부파일에 링크해두었습니다.  주주들에게 보내는 편지. 2022년, 4월 19일 나다. 순익 상승세가 감소한 건 인정한다. 구독자수? 크게 봐라. 증가세다. 내 쇼들도 다 잘나가는 중이다. 높은 가구 보급률과 경쟁심화는 걸림돌이긴 하다. 시정하겠다. (앞서 편지에서도 경고했던 거 처럼)코로나 특수 때문에 눈 돌아간 놈들 많았지? 이제 좀 제대로 보일꺼다. 가정 외 계정공유에서 돈을 쥐어짤 방법을 찾겠다. 영업이익률 목표는 20%다. 봐라. 내 성공공식이 뭐냐? 전 세계에서 콘텐츠를 만들고, 개인화 알고리즘으로 보여주는 거다. 이게 핵심 경쟁력이고 아직 건재하다. 1줄 요약 해주겠다. 토대는 튼튼하고 돈 벌 방법은 많으니 안심해라. 성장 개괄(Growth outlook) 스트리밍을 시작한 지 어언 15년. 믿음이 있었다. 인터넷의 보급으로 수요자 중심의 엔터테이먼트가 TV를 대체하리니 이는 돈을 쓸어 담을 회사를 만들 세기의 기회이리라! 지금도 수천만 가구가 내게 돈을 바치지만 여전히 지구의 인간들 가구 중 절반이 광대역 인터넷을 못쓴다. 그런데 광대역 인터넷과 스마트 TV의 세계적 보급률은 나날히 증가하는 중이다. 성장동력 없다는 놈들은 알못이다. 순익은 예전처럼 늘지 않았다. 중요하니까 두 번 말한다. 코로나 때문에 낀 거품이다. 이거 경고했었다. 코로나 말고 이유가 더 있는 데. 4개 알려준다. 하나, 내 성장은 광대역 보급률에 달려있다. 이건 내가 어찌할 수 있는 게 아니다. 셋톱박스나 스마트TV 보급, 데이터 사용료도 마찬가지다. 근데 장.기.적으로 좋아질 것들이다. 미래 고객들은 점점 더 늘고있다. 둘, 2억2천2백만의 가구가 내게 돈을 바친다. 222(mil) 실화? 그리고 추정컨데 1억 가구 정도가 가구 외 계정공유 하고 있다. 특히 미국/캐나다에서 3천만 가구다. 이 비율은 크게 바뀌진 않았는데. 코로나 거품때문에 가려진 성장 방해 요인이었다. 셋, 경쟁자가 늘었다. 15년 동안 나랑 밥그릇 싸움했던 애들 익숙할꺼다. 유투브,아마존,훌루 근데 지난 3년동안 나 말고도 스트리밍이 미래라고 생각하게 된 애들이 늘었다. 군웅할거의 시대다. 그런 와중에도 미국내에서 넷플릭스의 시청시간은 비율은 줄지 않았다. 그리고 난 이 비율에서 다른 놈들을 이기고 싶다. 많이 본다 = 만족한다 = Profit  넷, 거시적 요소들이다. 불황이 온다. 경제성장률 둔화, 인플레이션 심화, 우크라이나 전쟁, 코로나가 안끝나 등 *역주:대충 주머니 사정이 나빠지면 스트리밍부터 해지한다는 뜻 자 이제 계획을 말해주겠다. 늘 해온 거 할꺼다. 모든 걸 개선할꺼다. 개인화 추천과 쇼의 퀄리티. 이게 핵심 경쟁력이다. 컨텐츠 면에서, 이번 분기도 나쁘지 않았다. 브리저튼 시즌2 안본 인간 없지? 시청 시간 6.3억 시간이다. 역대 넷플릭스 영어 드라마 중 가장 잘팔렸다. 이번 분기에 캐리했다. 애나 만들기도 ㅈㄴ 잘팔렸다. 시청시간 5.1억시간이다. 진짜 숀다 라임스는 신이다. 가슴이 웅장해진다. *역주: 브리저튼 시즌2는 역대 드라마 중 시청시간 2위, 애나 만들기는 8위, 숀다 라임스는 저 두 쇼의 제작자. 영화 부문을 보면, 데이트앱 사기:당신을 노린다 가 이번에 다큐 중에서 가장 잘팔렸다. 1.6억시간 그외 아담프로젝트, 레드노티스, 돈룩업 등이 있다. 아, 그리고 기능면에서, 양손엄지척!(=최고에요!) 기능도 넣었다. 기존의 한손엄지척!(=좋아요!)보다 더 격렬한 감정을 표현할 수 있게 되었다. 구독자들의 개인화 경험이 개선될꺼다. 지난 25년 동안 난 발전해왔다. 첫 번째 라이벌이었던 블록버스터(회사이름) 기억하냐? 20년 동안 힘든 싸움이었다. 하지만 이겼다. 왜냐? 난 발전했으니까. 남이 만든 거 재방하는 회사에서 오리지널 프로그램 만드는 회사로 영어만 하는 로컬 회사에서 글로벌 회사로 그렇게 세계 최대의 스트리밍 회사로 진화했다. 아 그리고 가정 외 계정 공유하는 1억 가구들. 돈을 짜낼 구석이 있다. 걔들도 결국 날 좋아하는 거니까. 지불의사가 있는거다. 딱하게도 그 동안 오해가 좀 있었다. 난 가정 '내' 공유하는 걸 쉽게 하려고 노력했다. 근데 인간들은 그걸 가정 '외' 공유도 괜찮은 거라 생각하더라? 그 동안은 놔뒀는데 하 참 이게 그렇다고 금지하는 건 좀 그렇지? 그런 애들을 위해 새로운 구독 모델을 고려 중이다. 기대해라. 뭐 이탈하는 애들도 있을 테니까 아주 큰 수익 개선은 아닐꺼다. 나도 안다. 하지만 아무튼 개선은 될꺼임. 참 오랫동안, 난 미국에 의존하는 로컬 회사였다. 그리고 세상엔 '미국적'='국제적'이란 전통적인 인식이 있었다. 미국에서 만들어야 세계에 통한다는 인식. 틀렸다. 난 이렇게 생각한다. 위대한 이야기들은 어디서나 만들어질 수 있고 어디서도 사랑받을 수 있다. 이제 난 전 세계의 인간들과 일한다. 각자 로컬에 맞춘 드라마들을 만든다. 50개 넘는 국가에서 지역적 특징을 반영한 다양한 오리지널 시리즈가 만들어지고 그 국가들의 엔터테이먼트 생태계와 유기적으로 통합되고 있다. 봐라, 가장 잘 나가는 쇼 TOP6 중 3개가 비영어권 작품이다. 오겜, 종이의 집, 지우학. 특히 지우학은 이번 분기에 5.6억 시간으로 캐리했다. 우리 목표는 두 자리 수 성장을 지속하는 거다. 영업이익은 더 큰 폭으로 늘릴 꺼다. 그럼 현금 흐름도 좋아진다. 외환에 큰 변동이 없다고 가정하고 현재 수준(20%)의 영업 마진을 유지하면서 수익성을 보호하며 존버할꺼다. 그 뒤 다시 추진력을 얻어서 수익이 상승세에 접어들면 영업 이익률도 점차 늘릴 꺼다. 2분기 예측(Q2 forecast) 구체적인 예측치는 이미 분기 보고서에 써 놓긴 했으니까 참고해라. 2분기에는 지난 해 동 분기에 비해 구독자가 2백만 명 줄거나 1.5백만 명 증가하리라 예상한다. 이 예측은 현 기조가 꾸준히 유지된다는 가정과 분기적 특성에 기인한다.
