고대 그리스 시인 소포클레스는 ― 물론 영어가 아니라 그리스어로 말했겠지만 ― "It is but sorrow to be wise when wisdom profits not."이라는 말을 남겼다고 합니다. 진리를 좇아 탐구하고 사려한다는 것만으로도 충분한 의의를 지니는 학문도 있다고 생각하는 저도, 역시 대부분의 경우 저 말이 맞다고 ― 적어도 머리로는 ― 생각하고 있습니다. 애써 공부하고 배웠어도 그걸 일상생활이나 직장생활에서 써먹지 못한다면 노력한 시간이 많이 아깝다는 생각이 들곤 합니다. 저 같은 경우 특히나 고등학교까지 죽어라 공부했던 수학이 그렇습니다. 정말 매일 같이 문제를 풀었지만, 막상 대학에 진학하고 나니 정말 놀라울 정도로 써먹을 일이 없더군요. 하지만 반대로 갖고 있던 지식이나 능력을 정말 의외의 곳에서 활용하게 되는 경우가 있습니다. 각설하고 며칠 전에 있었던 일을 이야기 해볼까 합니다. 여느 아침처럼 집을 나서던 저희 가족을 난감하게 만들었던 고장난 도어락에 대한 이야기입니다. ㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡ 학교에 가려고 몸단장을 하고 방에서 나오니, 부모님께서 현관문을 붙잡고 씨름을 하고 계셨다. 무슨 일이냐 여쭈니, 이놈의 도어락이 말썽이란다. 아버지께서 역시 싼게 비지떡이라고, 중국산 건전지라 힘이 약해서 문도 못 잠근다는 말을 하시며 편의점으로 향하신다. 그 동안 난 도어락의 잠금쇠 부분을 들여다보고 있었다. 문을 연 채로 수동으로 잠금 버튼을 누르자, 힘차게 모터 구동음이 나며 잠금쇠가 튀어나온다. 하지만 문을 닫은 상태에서는 모터가 이리저리 움직이며 문이 잠겼다 열리는 소리가 반복해서 난 뒤 경고음이 삑삑거린다. 문이 잘 잠기다가 다시 도로 열리는 이유가 뭘까? 아버지가 건전지를 사오시는 동안 도어락을 들여다보았다. 아무리 보아도 어딘가 걸릴만한 부분이 보이지 않는다. 분명 잠금쇠가 제자리에 들어가서 문이 일시적으로 잠기기는 한다. 문을 연 상태에서 수동으로 잠금버튼을 누르면, 잠금쇠는 언제 그랬냐는듯 툭 튀어나온다. 잠시 뒤 아버지께서 사오신 미제 건전지를 사와 끼우시자, 거짓말처럼 고장 증상이 사라졌다. 역시 건전지 문제였던걸까? 아니, 아직 뭔가 찜찜한 기분이 가시질 않는다. 이사오기 전의 집에서 사용하던 도어락과는 다르게, 이놈의 도어락은 ― 특히 겨울에 ― 건전지를 먹어도 너무 많이 먹는다. 온도가 낮아지면 전지의 효율이 떨어진다는 이야기를 들어보기는 했지만, 더 추운 곳에 살 때도 이 정도로 건전지를 자주 바꿀 필요는 없었다. 이 도어락 회사가 건전지 회사와 모종의 계약이라도 맺어서 의도적으로 전력 소비량이 큰 것이 아니라면, 분명 이 도어락의 작동을 방해하는 무언가의 요인이 있을 것이다. 그 요인을 찾아내지 않는 이상 이 4개의 힘 세고 오래가는 건전지들은 그 캐치프라이즈의 이름값을 할 수 없을 것이다. 애당초 이름 있는 건전지도 이따금 이런 문제를 백번 중에 세 번 정도는 일으킨다. 당시는 문을 좀 잘못 닫았겠거니 싶었지만, 이제 와서 생각하니 빈도의 문제일 뿐 어쩌면 그 때도 지금과 동일한 상황이 아닐까. 다시 문을 여닫으며 시험을 해보던 도중, 무언가 이상함을 느꼈다. 문을 열고 수동으로 잠금버튼을 눌렀을 때와 문이 닫혀 자동으로 문이 잠길 때의 모터 구동 소리가 다르다. 최근에는 바빠지며 관두게 되었지만 이전에는 취미로 화성학을 공부하고 편곡하는 취미가 있던 적이 있어서, 절대음감이나 재능은 없지만 다른 사람에 비해 귀가 민감해져 있는 편이다. 모터 소리 특성상 특정한 음이 깔끔하게 들리지도 않고 이게 정확히 무슨 음인지는 모르겠지만, 흘러나오는 온갖 불협화음 같은 음들 중에서 일부가 명백하게 낮아진 것이 들린다. 이건 문이 닫힌 상황에서는 모터 속도가 정상보다 느리다는 것이 아닌가? 시험삼아 다시 싸구려 중국산 건전지로 바꿔끼우니, 다시 잠금쇠가 왔다갔다를 반복한다. 경고음이랑 섞여서 듣기 힘들지만 의식적으로 귀를 기울이니 명백하게 모터 소리가 낮아졌다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 문을 열어젖히고 잠금쇠가 들어가는 문틈의 공간을 본다. 아까 얼핏 봤을 때는 안보였지만, 휴대폰 플래시로 비춰보니 금속판의 구멍 테두리 부분에 묘하게 질감이 다른 부분이 보인다. 순간 언젠가 전공서적에서 본 건지, 아니면 교수님이 설명해 주신 건지 싶은 문장이 머리 속을 스친다. "금속수복물을 시적할 시 내면에 광택이 생기는 부위가 있을 경우, 해당 부위는 수복물의 장착을 방해하는 부위이므로 다른 요소를 평가하기 전에 조심스레 제거해주어야 한다." 깎아둔 치아 사이즈에 너무 딱 맞게 금니가 만들어지거나 조금이라도 툭 튀어나온 부분이 생기면 걸려서 금니가 치아에 완전히 다 안 들어갈 수 있으니 우선은 그것부터 해결하라는 이야기이다. 금니가 치아랑 닿는 면은 적합도를 최대한 유지하기 위해서 기공 단계에서 걸리는게 확인되지 않는 이상 그냥 손을 안대는 편이고 광택도 내지 않는다. 밖으로 노출되는 겉면이야 프라그가 가급적 부착되지 않도록 광을 내지만, 안쪽이야 어차피 구강 내로 노출되는 부위도 아닐 뿐더러 오히려 적당히 거칠어야 시멘트로 유지가 잘되니 광을 내지 않는 것이다. 그러는 와중에 금이 금속 중에서는 상당히 무른 재료이다보니 힘에 의해 변형되기 쉬워서 꽉 끼는 부분이 있으면 상대적으로 광이 나게 보이는 부분이 생기게 된다. 아무리 기공소에서 보철물을 완벽하게 만들어 와도, 치아는 항상 앞쪽으로 이동하려는 경향성이 있는지라 만약 임시 치아와 인접 치아 사이의 접촉이 조금이라도 헐겁다면 ― 음식물이 쉽게 끼는 것도 있고 ― 깎아둔 치아가 미묘하게 이동하며 본뜬 모형에서는 완벽하게 맞던 보철물이 실제 치아에서는 미묘하게 맞지 않아 조정이 필요한 경우가 생긴다. 다만 이 치아의 이동량은 눈으로 확인되지 않을 정도로 미세하기에, 조정이 필요한 경우라는 것을 보철물을 맞춰볼 때의 빡빡한 느낌이나 내면의 광택 여부 등을 통해 간접적으로 알아채야 하는 것이다. 문틀에 있는 금속판에는 물론 금이 들어있지 않겠지만 매일 몇 번씩이나 수 년 동안 마찰된 부분이 있다면 적어도 그 표면은 주위와는 다른 질감으로 관찰될 것이다. 바로 공구함을 뒤져 줄을 꺼내들고 그 부위를 갈아내기 시작했다. 스테인리스를 갈고 있는지라 내가 줄로 갈고 있는 건지 줄을 갈고 있는 건지 싶었지만, 정말 미세한 공간만 있으면 될 것이다. 여름에 비해 겨울에 전지를 더 많이 갈았다는 건 열수축이 이 문제에 기여하고 있다는 건데, 내가 재료학적인 감이 부족한지라 스테인리스강의 ― 애당초 오스테나이트니 마르텐자이트니 하는 종류도 잘 모르겠고 ― 열팽창계수가 어느 정도인지는 모르겠지만 추측컨데 갈아내야 하는 양은 아마 수십~수백 마이크로미터 정도면 충분할 것이다. 잠시 뒤 문을 닿으니, 중국산 건전지가 끼워진 상태에서도 문이 잘 잠기는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 위잉- 착! 크으으, 그래 이 소리지. 순간 악기의 장인이 빙의한 듯한 기분이었다. 음악으로 단련된 귀와 실무적인 응용과학이 이뤄내는 환상의 하모니. ㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡ 알고 있던 잡지식이나 전공지식이 정말 의외의 곳에서 도움이 된 경우가 종종 있긴 하지만, 정말 이 정도로 의외였던 경우는 이번이 처음입니다. 원래 ― 남들이 나쁘게 이야기 하기를 ― 쓸데없고 뜬구름 잡는 듯한, 그런 이상한 것 공부하고 탐구하는 걸 정말 좋아하는데 화성학이나 치과보철학처럼 좀 더 실용적인 학문의 덕을 보니 소포클레스의 생각을 이젠 머리가 아닌 마음으로도 조금은 이해할 수 있을 듯 합니다. 혹시나 전공지식이나 그 외 취미로 공부한 학문에 관한 지식을 생각치도 못한 경우에 쓰게 된 경험을 댓글로 알려주셔도 서로 재밌게 이야기 해볼 수 있을 것 같습니다. 신나게 글을 쓰다보니 어느새 오전 3시가 되어 가네요. 다들 건강하시고 행복한 연말 보내시길 바랍니다. * Cascade님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2021-12-28 09:39) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다. 제 치과의사 친구녀석 보여주면 좋아할 글이군요 ㅋㅋ 지난 번 그녀석한테 크라운 할 때 미묘한 높이 차이를 맞춰주느라 무척이나 애쓰던 친구인데, 그 때 생각이 문득 나네요.
저는 뭐 이렇게 거창한 전공지식은 아니고.. 팝송과 펜팔(?)이 인생에 도움이 되었던 적이 있네요.
중딩때.. MLTR (마이클 런스 투 락) 이라는 그룹의 노래를 즐겨 들었는데, 거기서 나온 "I've never seen such a lovely queen" 과 유사한 구문이 고등학교 입학시험에 나와서 ㅋㅋㅋ 재미를 좀 봤고...

고딩때 펜팔을 하던 경북 의성 지역 여사친이 있었는데 그녀석이 여름에 저한테 편지를 쓸 때 "의성은 여름에 비가 안와서 가뭄이 들 때가 잦다. 요즘 단수가 잦아서 못 씻어서 찝찝하다" 라는 글귀를 썼었는데 무려 수능시험 한국지리 문제에 경북 의성을 포함한 지역 지도를 두고 "다음 지역에 대한 설명으로 맞지 않은 것은??" 이라는 문제가 나왔는데 하필 보기에 "연중 강수량이 많은 지역이다" 라는게 떡 하니 있더라고요. ㅎㄷㄷㄷㄷㄷ 혹시 기억이 맞나 싶어서 다시 찾아보니 맞네요 ㅋㅋㅋ
