스타크래프트 1에서 02년 이전부터 활동해왔던 게이머들의 수상 내역을 살펴보면 정말 다종다양한 대회들이 존재합니다. 온겜 엠겜 양대리그에 익숙해진 오늘날에 와서는 이런 대회들을 공식전이 아닌 이벤트전, 우승의 가치를 부여해줄 수 없는 잡대회 라고 여기는 경우가 많습니다. 그러면서 저런 '잡대회'들이 싹 사라지고 온겜 엠겜의 양대리그만 남는 과정을 '틀이 갖춰지고 판이 커지는 과정' 으로 여기기까지 하는데, 그건 사실과는 거리가 멉니다. 게임방송사 주도의 스1리그가 끝난 것에 이어 방송사 마저 문을 닫은 지금이야말로 게임대회의 역사를 간략히 돌아보는 것이 좋겠다 싶어서 글을 적어봅니다. 1998년, 스타크래프트는 발매되자 마자 전 세계적인 인기를 누렸습니다. 이건 새삼스레 말할 필요도 없지요. 한국 뿐만 아니라 세계적으로도 스타1의 대회가 줄줄이 열렸고 게이머들이 상금을 쫓아 대회에 참가했습니다. 한국에서는...말이 필요한가요? PC방이란 산업이 새로 만들어질만큼 대인기를 누렸지요. 여기서 잠깐 그 당시 한국의 상황에 대해 자세히 짚고 넘어갈 필요가 있습니다. 1997년 12월 IMF 사태가 터지고, 98년 새로이 들어선 정권은 국민들에게 새로운 먹거리와 미래상을 제시할 필요가 있었습니다. 그 대상으로 낙점된 것이 고속통신망 혁명을 앞세운 IT사업과 '벤처기업'이었죠. 여기서 벤처기업이란 요즘 이야기하는 스타트업인데 저 때는 일본식 단어를 그대로 들여와서 벤처기업이라고 불렀습니다. 오늘 날 기준으로는 스타트업이 정확한 표기지만 이 글에서는 당시의 표기를 따르겠습니다. 엄밀히 말하면 국가적으로 벤처기업을 육성하려는 시도는 IMF 직전에 있었지만 벤처 열풍이 본격적으로 불어닥친 것은 98년 이후였습니다. 벤처기업 육성 특별법이 제정되고 창업투자회사가 설립되어 벤처기업들에게 국가가 자금을 지원했죠. 이 바람을 타고 대학생부터 대학교수, IT 계열 회사원들까지 저마다 아이디어를 들고 나와 벤처기업을 차렸습니다. '우리도 미국의 애플이나 MS처럼 공대생들이 창고에서 뭔가를 뚝딱거려 기업을 세우고 성공할 수 있다' 라는 것이 당시 벤처 육성의 기치였습니다. 이게 딱히 허언도 아니었던 것이, 당시 대학교 동아리에서 컴퓨터 만지던 사람들이 오늘날에는 소프트웨어 회사 사장, 게임 재벌, 거대 포털 회장 등이 되어 있죠. ADSL의 보급과 함께 새로이 열린 인터넷과 IT 산업이란 시장은 이들에게 거대한 기회의 땅이었죠. 기존의 산업에서는 대기업이 구축한 점유율과 자본의 벽을 넘어서기 어렵지만 여기서는 달랐습니다. 예를 들자면 지금이야 통신 3사가 확고하게 나눠먹은 통신 사업이지만 이 때는 인터넷 서비스 공급업체가 대기업 말고도 여럿 있었어요. 두루넷, 온세통신, 하나로통신...나이 어린 우리 동년배들은 들어본 적이 없는 이름들일테니 궁금하면 부모님께 여쭤봅시다. 저도 잘은 모르지만 옆집 아저씨가 말해주길 그 때는 그랬다고 하네요. 아무튼 대기업에게도 미지의 영역이었던 새로운 시장에서 시대의 변화에 민첩하게 반응할 수 있었던 것은 아이디어를 내세운 벤처기업들이었고, 이들은 기발한 아이디어를 짜내고 소프트웨어를 만들어서 사람들을 끌어들이려 애를 썼습니다. 오늘날의 다음을 만든 '한메일넷'의 이메일 서비스가 그 대표사례고, 그 밖에도 사이트 내에서 보물찾기를 진행하거나 홈페이지를 만들 수 있는 공간을 주는 등등 많은 시도가 있었죠. 인츠, 신비로, 하이홈...이 또한 우리 동년배들은 모르는 이름들일테니 부모님께 여쭤봅시다. 그리고 이를 뒷받침하는 하드웨어 시장도 당연히 폭발적인 성장을 기록했죠. 전자기기 OEM 시장도 커졌고 아예 이를 넘어서 한국형 전자기기를 표방하고 생산하던 업체들도 생겨났습니다. 이노츠, 슈마 일렉트론 같은 기업들이죠. 이제는 추억 속의 이름이 된 삼보 컴퓨터, 현주 컴퓨터 같은 회사들도 이 때 호황을 누렸고요. 여기에 발맞추어 PC방이 등장해 전국으로 퍼져나갔습니다. 당시 PC방이란 적당한 점포에 컴퓨터 스무대 쯤 들여놓고 숫자 맞춰서 스타크래프트와 레인보우 식스 패키지만 사두면 초등학생 꼬꼬마부터 대학생들까지 근방의 남자아이들이 모조리 몰려드는 기적의 공간이었죠. 그 때는 학교 끝나는 시간대에 PC방 가면 교복 입은 사내놈들이 득시글 거려서 게임 좀 하려면 빈 자릴 찾아 온 동네 PC방을 돌아다녀야 했다~라고 옆집 아저씨가 말씀하시네요. 물론 이것도 돈 된다 하니 폭발적인 창업이 이어지면서 점점 경쟁이 심화되었습니다. 이렇게 기업부터 PC방까지 수많은 경쟁자들이 난립했기에 이들은 모두 자신들의 이름을 알릴 수 있는 홍보수단을 절실히 필요로 했습니다. 그런데 이들이 타겟으로 노리던 수요층은 거의 청년 남성들이었습니다. 어? 때마침 그 수요층들이 환장을 하는 게임이 있네요? 그 게임을 하려면 인터넷 연결도 필요하고 컴퓨터도 있어야 하는데 그게 바로 우리가 파는 상품이네요? 이렇게 해서 한국 게임 역사에 두 번 다시 없을 황금시대가 열립니다. PC방은 게임이 소비되는 말단부이자 뿌리로서 기능하면서 게임 대회에 참가할 실력자들을 길러내고 이를 소비할 팬들을 끌어모았으며, 기업들은 앞다투어 돈을 투자해 스타크래프트 대회를 열었죠. 하다못해 동네 PC방도 무료 이용권을 미끼로 걸고 대회를 열어 아이들을 끌어모았습니다. PC방과 IT, 벤처기업은 실로 스타크래프트를 지탱하는 세 개의 기둥이었습니다. 게이머들에게 있어선 그야말로 온 사방에서 광고주들이 돈 싸들고 찾아오던 행복한 시절이었지요. 이러한 흐름은 2000년에 들어서 마침내 이 세 개의 기둥을 융합해 거대한 생태계를 구축하려는 시도로 이어집니다. 그것이 바로 '배틀탑' 이라는 벤처기업이 운영하던 한국인터넷게임리그(KIGL, 이하 키글)입니다. 당시 블리자드가 제공하던 스타크래프트 배틀넷은 여러모로 기능이 떨어졌습니다. 지금처럼 서버별로 게이트웨이를 골라서 접속할 수도 없었고 원하는 상대와 함께 게임을 하기 어려웠거든요. 배틀탑은 자체적으로 서버를 운영하며 매칭 시스템과 전적에 따른 순위 시스템 등을 제공해 이 부족함을 채워주었지요. 뿐만 아니라 자체 브랜드의 PC방을 운영하면서 온, 오프라인을 망라한 영향력을 가지고 있었고, 프로와 아마를 가리지 않고 다양한 대회를 열고 이를 인터넷으로 중계하는 등 여러 모로 시대를 앞선 운영을 보여주었죠. 무엇보다도 이 대회는 이전까지 게이머 개개인들이 제각각 상금이 걸린 대회에 참가하는 '상금 사냥꾼' 방식에서 벗어나 프로게임단들의 경쟁을 중심으로 하는 거대 리그를 추구했다는 점에서 큰 차이가 있었습니다. 배틀탑을 진정한 강자들의 각축장으로 만들겠다는 이 거창한 포부를 실현하기 위해 대회의 상금 규모도 연간 2억 7천만원이나 되었고, 말만 거창한 것이 아니라 실제로도 수십개의 프로게임단이 키글에 참가하고 있었죠. 이 프로게임단들은 대부분 벤처기업들이 자사의 이름을 걸고 후원하는 팀들이었습니다. 그래서 당시 프로게이머들을 소개하는 문구에는 으레 배틀탑에서의 성적이 상단에 오르곤 했죠. 키글과 경쟁하던 또 하나의 대회로는 프로게이머 코리아 오픈(PKO)이 있었습니다. 흔히 PKO 라고 하면 투니버스가 중계하고 최진우가 우승했던 99 PKO만 이야기 되는데, 사실 그 후에도 PKO는 계속 대회를 열었습니다. PKO 또한 키글과 마찬가지로 게임단들을 끌어들여 리그를 열며 SBS를 통해 지상파 중계까지 이뤄냈었고요. 이 시점에서 국내 프로게임계의 중추는 누가 뭐래도 키글과 PKO였습니다. 이런 배경 속에서 2000년에 온게임넷이 개국합니다. 정확히 말하면 온게임넷과 같은 온미디어 소속인 투니버스에서 99년에 KPGL, PKO을 중계하다가 00년에 자체적으로 하나로통신배 스타리그를 개최했었고, 이를 이어 받아 독립한 것이 온게임넷이죠. 하지만 위에서 썼듯이 이 때만 하더라도 투니버스,온게임넷은 수많은 대회 가운데 하나에 지나지 않았습니다. 후발주자로서 그보다도 권위가 약했던 겜비씨는 말할 것도 없고요. 이 시기에 프로게이머들은 이미 게임단에 소속되어 연봉을 받으며 키글, PKO, KGL 등의 팀대회에 출전하고 있었던 반면 스타리그는 개개인의 대결이었고, 일정한 출전이 보장되지 않는 토너먼트에다가 대회 기간도 3개월로 너무 길었죠. 당시 왠만한 게임대회들은 오늘날의 wcg처럼 며칠 이내에 끝난다는 걸 감안하면 꽤 큰 약점이었습니다. 그렇다고 해서 게임방송사가 상금을 독보적으로 많이 줬느냐 하면 그런 것도 아니었습니다. 이는 임요환의 우승 기록을 보면 알 수 있습니다. 흔히 양대 방송사의 게임리그를 권위 있는 '공식대회' 라고 부르며 공식대회 아니면 우승으로 쳐주지 않는 풍조가 강합니다만, 임요환이 '공식대회'에서 차지한 3회의 우승으로 벌어들인 우승 상금은 2600만원(1000만원+1000만원+600만원)입니다. 그런데 임요환이 '비공식전' 인 WCG에서 2회의 우승을 기록하며 받은 상금만 4만 달러이고, 키글 왕중왕전에서 우승했을 때는 3천만원을 벌었습니다. 어...대체 뭐가 공식전이죠? 그 밖에도 우승 상금 3만달러 짜리 APGL을 비롯하여 KBK, PKO, 아자아자배 스타리그 등 우승 상금 1~2천만원의 대회는 여럿 있었습니다. 케이블 TV로 방송되었다는 대중성 때문에 그래도 온게임넷이 최고 아니었느냐 하실 수도 있습니다만, PKO는 SBS에서 중계되었고 키글이 SBS의 스튜디오를 빌려 경기를 열고 ITV에서 중계되었던 것에 비하면 이것도 아주 특별한 장점이라고 보기 어렵습니다. 그 때는 지금처럼 케이블 TV가 대중화 된 시절도 아니었고요. 이 시기엔 그 어떤 대회도 다른 대회를 '비공식전'으로 밀어낼 권위 따윈 없었고 선수들은 상금사냥꾼 형태로 활동했었습니다.  <그러니까 온겜 초창기에는 대충 이런 느낌...> 하지만 이렇게 좋았던 황금기는 2001년을 넘기며 점점 사그라듭니다. 이렇게 된 이유는 첫 번째, 벤처 거품이 꺼지면서 기업들이 무너져내렸기 때문이고 둘째로는 스타크래프트의 인기가 뚝 떨어졌기 때문입니다. 내실 없는 거품과 도덕적 해이, 부패 등의 사태가 연달아 터지며 벤처기업의 이미지는 땅에 떨어졌고 불과 몇년 전 언론에서 천재 사업가라 띄워주던 창업자들이 범죄자가 되어 일간지에 오르는 일들이 일어났습니다. 또한 세상사가 다 그렇듯이 새로운 생태계가 열리고 시간이 흐르면 경쟁자들의 도태와 이합집산을 거쳐 고착화가 진행되게 마련인데 IT 업계 역시 예외는 아니었죠. 중소기업들이 무너지며 튼튼한 자본력을 가진 대기업 위주로 시장이 재편되었습니다. 그런데 기업들이 망한 건 그렇다 쳐도 스타가 인기가 떨어졌다니? 2021년에도 현역인데? 라고 하실 수 있지만, 90년대의 스타 인기는 00년대 이후와 견주면 가히 태양과 반딧불이 수준으로 차이가 납니다. 당시 피씨방 가보면 스타 말고 다른 게임을 하는 사람을 찾기가 어려울 정도였어요. 딱히 스타를 위협할 경쟁작도 없었고요. 그러나 00년에 발매된 디아블로 2를 필두로 수많은 게임들이 발매되어 큰 인기를 모았고 2001년 쯤 이미 스타는 한물 간 과거의 게임이었습니다. 아직 게이머들의 숫자가 제법 남아있는 인기 게임 정도는 되었지만 중요한 건 그 인기가 어느 정도 되는 시장을 먹여살릴 수 있는가 하는 겁니다. 지금 스타 인기가 옛날보다 죽었다 죽었다 해도 인터넷 방송 위주의 가볍고 작은 시장을 먹여살릴 수준은 되는 것처럼 말이죠. 줄어든 인기는 더 이상 수많은 대회들을 지탱할 수 없었습니다. 이렇게 돈줄은 말라가는데 게임의 인기마저 떨어지면서 스타크래프트의 시대는 사라지는 것처럼 보였습니다. 하지만 이 격변하는 환경 속에서 게임방송사는 이전과는 다른 방식으로 새롭게 시장을 열면서 전성기를 맞이하는데 성공합니다. 분량이 길어지니 그 이야기는 다음 글에서 이어 쓰겠습니다. * Cascade님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2021-08-31 13:14) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다.
