대학 시절, 마르크스주의에 관심이 많았던 내게 사회이슈를 다루는 토론 수업이란 무척 즐겁고 재밌는 시간이었다. 학생들이 마치 진실처럼 읇는 이야기들을 정면으로 반박할 수 있는 시선을 많이 주었기 때문이다. 물론 지금에서는 그 때의 의견이 맞았는지 확실하진 않다. 그러나 여전히 한 가지 자부심 같은것이 있었다면, 적어도 다수가 그래야만 한다는 주류 의견에 쉽게 매몰되지 않았고, 비판과 비난을 피하지 않았으며, 나름의 근거와 설명을 토대로 주장한 내 이야기에 동조하고 삶의 방향성이나 가치관을 조금씩 튼 친구들이 있었다. 언제였던가, 사회이슈를 다루는 세미나에서 페미니즘과 관련된 이야기가 나왔다. 누군가가 손을 들고 질문을 했고, 페미니즘을 주장하는 발화자는 싱그럽게 웃으며 말했다. 그건 그쪽이 공부해야죠. 휘파람과 박수소리가 나왔다. 나는 차마 동의할 수 없었다. 그 질문은 좀 바보같았을 수도 있고, 좀 차별적이었을 수도 있다. 그러나 그의 입을 그렇게 막는다면, 그는 쉬이 페미니스트로 살아가지 않을 것이었다.이념은 삶에 아주 작은 표지판 하나를 더 세워두는것과 같다고 생각한다. 그가 어느 순간에 성차별적인 모습에 저항하고 싶었을 때, 머리 한켠에서는 그 날 새빨갛게 당황한 얼굴로 비웃음을 사며 고개숙여야했던 그 순간이 기억날지도 모른다. 누구도 그 기억을 갚아줄 수 없기에, 그에게 그저 페미니즘이 옳다는 말은 오랫동안 공허하게 다가갈 것이다. 그래서 늘 생각하는 것이지만, 누군가의 말과 생각을 짓밟는 그 순간의 사이다는 사회를 변화시키고 싶은 행위가 아니다. 내가, 우월하고 싶기 위해 삶의 어느 순간에 변화할 지도 모르는 이에게 지뢰를 심는 것과 같다. 돌이켜보니, 나도 여전히 가끔 그러고 있다는 생각이 들어 좀 우울해진다. 오늘 한겨례가 이준석의 출연을 철회했다는 기사를 보았다. (http://www.mediatoday.co.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=213791) 젠더적 관점에서 진중권과 같이 출연 시킬 수는 없다는 입장이었나보다. 오래된 시사프로 JTBC의 썰전에서 패널을 골랐던 자세와는 좀 차이가 있다고 느껴졌다. 위대한 것은 마르크스가 아니다. 마르크스주의는 이름일 뿐, 그것이 레닌주의 마오주의 스탈린주의 혹은 네오마르크스주의든 알튀세르주의든, 또 다른 어떤 이름으로 불리든지 간에 그 안에는 노동자라는 핵심 계급이 세상의 구조를 바라보는 다른 시선이 있다는 점이 진정으로 중요한 것이다. 자유민으로서 농노에서 해방된 노동자들에게, 세상에 자신을 주인으로 둘 수 있는 유일한 무기를 만들어 냈다는 것이. 그리고 그것이 한동안 수많은 사람들에게 현실을 충분히 설명하는 힘이 있었다는 것이 바로 마르크스주의가 갖는 의의였다. 그래서 수업중에 어떤 이슈로 토론을 할때면, 나는 신자유주의나 자유지상주의를 옹호하는 사람들과도 논쟁해야했고, 온건하게 보수적인 수정자본주의와도 논쟁해야 했다. 때로는 그들의 주장에 굽혀야 할 때도 있었고, 그럴때면 다시금 그 주장을 공부하고 다른 해법에 대한 관점을 찾고자 했다. 그렇게 수업을 반복하다보면, 세상을 바라보는 관점에는 별 관심이 없던 친구들이 나름의 입장으로 자리를 잡아간다. 모두가 마르크스주의와 노동자계급에 빠져들지는 않았고, 누군가는 정 반대에 서기도 했으나 또 누군가는 비슷하게 사회의 모순이 갖는 경계에 관심을 갖기 시작했다. 과연 마르크스주의가 그저 그 자체로 정답이라고, 이것에 동조하지 않는 자들은 모두 노동계급을 천시하고 인간을 수탈하는 체제에 찬성하며 착취를 정당화하는 사람들이라고 매몰하고, 논쟁의 장으로 부터 밀어냈으면 어땠을까. 때때로 목적을 위해 누군가는 그런 식으로 일을 하곤 한다. 특히 대학사회에서는, 학생회의 정치나 인싸와 아싸의 정치같은 것을 보면 열린 것이 아니라 집단을 닫고 누군가를 밀어냄으로서 힘을 증명하고 집단의 의견을 통일하려 한다. 당연히, 마르크스 주의를 공부한다는 운동권의 전략에도 비슷한 모양새는 있었다. 모두가 그런 것은 아니었으나, 운동권이든 비권이든 누군가는 그런식으로 여론을 호도하고자 했고 그건 참 효과적이었다. 집단의 동질성으로 주류를 획득하는 것은 그 자체로 모든 논쟁을 이기는 힘이었다. 그러나 그렇지 않았기에, 나는 완전히 이길 수 없을 지언정 노동자와 계급의 모순 속에서 나름의 가치관을 가져가고 살아가고자 하는 친구들을 만날 수 있었다. 그 친구들이 한 때는 진보정당에서, 한 때는 시민단체에서 젊음을 쏟아 일하는 그 시간이 바로 착취당하는 계급을 위한 시간이었다는 생각을 한다. 분명히 누군가의 삶은 그들에게 위로받을 수 있었을 것이다. 이준석은 페미니즘의 적일수도 있다. 혹은, 이준석에게 발언권을 주는 것은 굳이 한겨레가 아니어도 많다는 말을 할 수도 있다. 그러나 페미니즘도, 마르크스주의도 사람들의 삶에 중요한 가치관을 흔들고자 한다는 점에서 가장 중요한 것은 어떠한 비판과 비난 앞에서도 마음의 문을 닫지 말야아 한다는 것이다. 만약 더 이상 현실의 모순과 차별, 고통을 충분히 설명하고 설득할 수 없다면. 누군가의 비판에 대해 응답함으로써 사람들의 마음에 닿을 수 없다면 그것은 이념으로서의 힘을 잃은 것이다. 그 때에 필요한 것은 이것이 우리가 응당 가져야 할 옳은 정의이자 이념이라고 외칠 것이 아니라, 더 이상 현실에서 힘을 쓸 수 없는 그 사상을 재구축하고 유효한 것으로 만들기 위해 재정립하는 것이다. 마르크스가 살던 시절의 노동자는 홍차 두 잔과 빵 반쪼가리가 하루 노동을 위한 에너지 원이었고, 바닥에 눕지조차 못해 밧줄에 몸을 널어 자야하는, 과로와 부상, 질병으로 죽는것이 당연한 '비참한'자유인이었다. 그 때의 마르크스 주의를 그대로 오늘날에 말한다 한들 과연 얼마나 사람들이 온당하다 여길 것인가. 오늘날 마르크스주의의 모습이 바로 마르크스주의의 패배인가? 그렇다. 마르크스주의는 패배했다. 그러나 중요한것은, 우리가 패배 이후의 삶에서 또 다른 현미경을 필요로 한다는 것이다. 노동자의 삶을 대변하는 것이 꼭 마르크스의 이름이어야 하는가? 어째서 마르크스주의는 전 세계를 뒤흔들었나. 어째서 공산주의가 이상향으로 받아들여졌나. 그것은 마르크스여서가 아니다. 그것이 노동자들에게 진정한 자유를 줄 것이라는 믿음을 줄 수 있는 이념이었기 때문이다. 이름은, 아무래도 좋은 것이다. 페미니즘은 언젠가 페미니즘이 아닐수도 있다. 그것의 이름이 중요한가? 그것은 무엇이어도 된다. 중요한 것은 세상에서 본질적으로 분리되어 존재하는 성별에 대한 차별을 어떻게는 없애가고자 하는 것이다. 어디서부터 어디까지가 차별이고 어디서부터 어디까지 차별하지 않아야 한다는 경계에 대한 지리한 싸움이다. 그래서 이 싸움은 누군가를 배척해서는 설득할 수 없다. 당장은 누군가를 배척함으로써, 발언을 막음으로써, 자아비판의 장에 세움으로써 공포로 달성할 수 있는 모습이 있을 것이다. 그러나 결국 소련은 해체됐고, 중국 공산당은 개방을 결정했다. 총칼의 공포를 이긴 것은 무력이 아니었다. 자본주의가 인민을 더 풍족하게 만들고 있었던 것 뿐이다. 이준석이 한겨례에서 발언하지 못하는 것은 별 일 아닐지도 모른다. 그러나 페미니즘은 이준석같은 사람과의 싸움을 피해서는 안된다. 어쩌면 이준석이 맞을 수도 있다. 그러나 이준석의 입을 닫게 하는것으로는 사람들의 변화를 이끌 수 없다. 누군가 페미니즘의 말과, 이준석의 말을 모두 듣고 결정하는 것. 그 과정 없이는 절대로 이념이 물처럼 흐르지 않는다. 이것을 어떻게든 틀어막고자 하는 순간부터 모든 것이 망가진다. 사상은 무엇보다 스스로에게 가혹하고 혹독해야한다. 여성학의 논문이 다른 학계보다 더 성역에 있는가? 더 쉽게 논문이 통과되는가? 정말 그렇다면 부끄러워 할 일이다. 현실을 설명할 수 있고, 우리 편을 쉽게 만들 수 있는 지식을 편하게 활용하는 것은 세상을 바꾸고자 하는 활동가들의 몫이지만, 그 지식을 열린 자세로 깨고, 부수고, 다시세움으로서 현실에 뒤쳐지지 않게 하는 것은 지식인의 몫이다. 마르크스주의가 망한 것은 자본가가 악해서가 아니다. 마르크스주의가 그저 세상을 충분히 변혁하기에 모자랐을 뿐이다. 계급의 모순을 핑계로 마르크스주의의 학술적 엄정함이 동정을 받고 현실의 모습에 타협한 순간 마르크스주의는 무너지고 있었다. 마찬가지다. 페미니즘이 이준석을 이길 수 없고, 대중이 이준석을 더 지지한다면 페미니스트는 슬퍼할 수 있고 분노할 수 있으며 때로는 동지를 부여잡고 술잔을 기울이며 대중을 비난할 수 있다. 그러나 이준석과 같은 이들을 막아서는 안된다. 진보는 막지 않는 것이다. 자유주의자에게 깨진다면 자유주의자를 죽일 것이 아니라 나를 죽여야한다. 내 안의 믿음 안에서 공고히 흐르던 이념을 다시 세워야한다. 그렇지 않으면 언젠가 이념이 스스로를 배반했다 여기거나, 세상이 우리의 이념을 핍박했다고만 원망하게 된다. 페미니즘이 설명할 수 없는, 페미니즘이 설득할 수 없는 현실을 만났는가? 그 곳이 바로 뛰어야 할 곳이다. 받아들이고, 재정립하고, 다시 이야기하는 것만이 유일한 길이다. 그런 고통 없이 누군가의 입을 막는 것으로 살아남으려 했다가는 공론장에서 금세 비웃음만 사게 될 것이다. 마치, 이제는 온갖 세치 혀들의 악세사리가 되어버린 마르크스주의처럼.. * Cascade님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2021-06-22 07:40) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다.
