1. 냉전의 지구사 - 미국과 소련 그리고 제3세계 (오드 아르네 베스타/옥창준 역 - 에코리브르) 흔히 냉전하면 소련 vs 미국의 양강체제 속에서, 공산권은 동구권과 중국 베트남 쿠바, 자본권은 한국/일본/대만 + 북서유럽 정도로 인식하는 경우가 많지만, 이 책은 아프리카, 중남미, 중동, 동남아시아 등 제3세계를 중심으로 냉전세계를 전체적으로 폭넓게 서술하려 시도합니다. 중소갈등, 제3세계론과 반둥 회의, 시대별 소련과 미국의 국제정책 변천이라는 큰 흐름 속에서, 베트남과 쿠바는 물론 인도네시아, 이집트, 이란, 앙골라, 에티오피아와 소말리아, 아프가니스탄 등 냉전담론에서 인지도 낮은 제3세계 국가 위주로 서술된 재미가 있습니다. 분량도 꽤 많지만 정보량이 많고, 생각할 것도 많은 유익한 책입니다. 다만 남북한(아주 살짝 스치듯 언급하긴 합니다)과 미얀마를 어떻게 평가하나 궁금했는데, 이 나라들이 빠져서 개인적으로는 아쉽습니다. 너무 노골적인 자본주의/공산주의 진영이라 빠진 걸까요? 2. 추월의 시대 - 세대론과 색깔론에 가려진 한국 사회의 성장기 (김시우, 백승호, 양승훈, 임경빈, 하헌기, 한윤형 - 메디치) '한국은 이제 선진국이 되는 데 성공했다. 한국의 미래를 바람직하게 이끌려면 이를 인정하는 데서 시작해야 한다'라는 주제의식 자체가 굉장히 반가웠던 책입니다. 오래전부터 위 가치관을 가진더라 헬조선이란 말이 유행할 때 많이 불편했었는데, 이제라도 사회적으로 받아들여지는 것 같으니 기분이 많이 좋네요. 헬마우스라는 유명 진보 유튜브 채널 제작진이 만든(현직 교수인 양승훈은 제외) 책이라 그런지, 퀄리티는 아쉬운 부분이 많습니다. 한 명을 빼고 전부 비학계 출신이다보니, 증명되지 않는 가설 수준의 이야기가 많았고 읽다가 "어...?" 싶은 부분도 꽤 있었어요. 아주 깊이있는 분석도 아니었고 두루뭉술하게 큰 틀 정도만 잡는 느낌이었습니다. 거기에 중간에 헬마우스 시청자를 위한 립서비스같은 부분도 있어서 좀 그랬습니다 ㅋㅋ 그래도 사회적 담론을 꽃피우는 촉진제로서의 역할을 한 건 반가웠습니다. 까일 건 까이더라도 의의는 살려 줬으면.... 3. 자본주의의 미래 - 새로운 불안에 맞서다 (폴 콜리어/김홍식 역 - 까치) 주제만 보면 양산형 현대 자본주의 비판 책이지만, 좀 특이하게도 비좌파 경제학자의 시선으로 비라봅니다. 그래서인지 이 현실을 만든 주범으로 기성 우파는 물론 좌파까지 한꺼번에 비판하는데요. (충분히 좌파적이지 못했다고 까는 것도 아닌, 방향 자체가 잘못되었기에 의도와는 다른 결과를 냈다고 깝니다) 좌파들이 공동체가 없는 공리주의나 롤스식 자유주의를 잘못 받아들여 공동체적 본능이 있는 서민들을 망가트렸다고 비판합니다. 굉장히 윤리적인, 공통체가 중심이 된 세계를 원하다보니 이게 경제학자가 쓴 책이라고? 싶을 정도입니다. (다만 경제학적 분석도 약간 나옵니다) 문제제기는 물론이고 내놓는 대안이 신선하게 많았습니다. (제1도시 집중과 이로 인한 지대추구를 막기 위한 특별세라던가) 다만 과거는 좋았는데 지금은 그때만 못하다면서 과거를 지나치게 미화한 부분이 있고, 이를 통해 미화했던 과거의 '국내의 책임있는 정치인과 케인즈주의/사민주의, 전통적인 가정, 생기 넘치는 공동체'가 복구가능한지 회의감이 많이 듭니다. 직접 과거로 돌아가자고 언급하는 대신 다른 대안을 말하지만, 그래도 너무 미화하다보니 수꼴스러운 뉘앙스가 느껴지는 건 어쩔 수 있어요. 4. 일인칭 단수 (무라카미 하루키/홍은주 역 - 문학동네) 호불호가 많이 갈리는 유명 작가인데, 전 호라서 한번 사 봤습니다. '색채가 없는 다카기 스쿠루와 그가 순례를 떠난 해'를 읽은지 꽤 오래 됐군요. 시간이 지났어도 몰입감이 강하고 무언가를 탐구해나가는 하루키 특유의 글빨은 여전합니다. 그 부분은 반가웠습니다. 하지만 작품의 매력은 딱 거기까지였습니다. 단편집인데, 대부분의 단편이 좋고 재미있게 읽히긴 했지만 그걸 넘어 딱 들어오는 획기적인 단편은 없었거든요. 특히 '야쿠르트 스왈로스 시집'은 수필도 아니고 왜 넣었는지 이해가 안 될 정도. 옛날에 느꼈던 매혹과 몽환성, 그리고 기품은 많이 죽었다 싶었습니다. 하루키 팬들은 읽어볼 만하지만, 다른 사람에게 추천하긴 그저그런 책입니다. 5. 좁은 회랑 (대런 애쓰모글루, 제임스 A. 로빈슨/장경덕 역 - 시공사) '국가는 왜 실패하는가'로 유명한 애쓰모글루/로빈슨 듀오의 신간입니다. 전작 못지않는 어마어마한 두께를 자랑하는데요. 경제성장에 제도가 중요하다고 했던 저자들은 이제 민주주의와 자유가 어떤 환경에서 꽃피우고 몰락하는지를 다룹니다. 요즘같은 혼란의 시대에 딱 어울리는 책이죠. 내용이 정말 많다보니 사례읽는 재미는 있지만, 크고 복잡한 체계를 만들고 맞는 사례를 배치했다기보다는 그냥 사례를 많이 나열해서 분량을 부풀렸다는 인상을 많이 받았습니다. 아니 그걸 넘어, 사례를 이론에 끼워맞춰 해석했다는 티도 많이 났어요. 역사를 잘 모르는 제게도 "이걸 이렇게 해석/환원한다고?" 싶은 부분이 몇 있었습니다. 그래선지 저도 나중엔 사례부분은 속독해서 디테일은 다 넘기며 읽었습니다. 전작을 다 읽어본 건 아니지만 훝어봐도 위와 비슷한 게 다 느껴지던데, 이번 작도 역시나였네요. 네임드엔 못 미치는 퀄리티의 책이라 아쉬웠습니다. 6. 조선의 결혼과 출산 문화 (박희진 - 은행나무) 인구학의 관점에서 조선시대의 출산율/혼인 시기/혼인-출산 문화 등을 다룬 책입니다. 초반에 약간 학술적인 부분 나오는 것만 넘기면 굉장히 재미있습니다. 성리학적 문화가 결과적으로 출산율을 낮추는 효과를 냈다던가, 초경 연령이 지금보다 상당히 늦었다거나(거의 고등학생 무렵에야 초경을;;) 흥미로운 이야기가 많습니다. 분량도 짧고 편히 읽을 수 있는 책입니다. 관심 분야라 흥미롭게 읽었네요. 7. 디스커넥트 인간형이 온다 (오카다 다카시/송은애 역 - 생각의길) 미래가 저같이(?) 혼자있기를 좋아하고, 타인과의 애착을 원하지 않으며 인간보다 사물에 익숙한 아웃사이더들의 시대가 될 거라고 예언한 책입니다. 저자의 모국인 일본에서 코로나19 직전에 출간된 걸 생각하면, 결과적으로 엄청난 예언서. 읽다보면 굉장히 무시무시한 예측이 많습니다. 직접 말은 안했지만 굉장히 디스토피아적으로 언급한 부분이 많습니다. 부모가 자식과 애착하기 힘들어져서 양육로봇을 통해 아이들이 성장해나갈 것이라거나, 사람 간의 애착이 없기 때문에 삶의 의미를 찾기 힘든 사람들이 많아져 사회 문제가 될 거라던가... 다만 왜 이런 시대가 왔는지에 대한 인식이 다소 피상적이고(맞벌이가 많아져 아이들이 부모와 애착하기 어려워져서 디스커넥트형이 됐다는, PC의 관점에서 문제될만한 부분도 있습니다) 저자가 디스커넥트 인간형을 다소 과도하게 생각한 면도 있어 보이고, 그러다보니 미래를 과도하게 비관적으로 인식한 면은 있습니다. 8. 2030 축의 전환 (마우로 기옌/우진하 역 - 리더스북) 베스트셀러인 미래예측서입니다. 시사문제에 관심이 많았다면 대부분은 예측 가능한, 생각보다는 평범한 내용들입니다. 베이비붐세대가 밀레니얼/Z세대보다 더 소비시장에서 우위라는 등 신선한 지적도 있었는데, 제2의 산업혁명이 아프리카에서 탄생한다던가, 여성들이 10년사이 엄청나게 권력을 갖는다던가, 전자화폐를 너무 고평가한다던가 하는 과도한 예측도 있어서 완벽하게 신뢰하진 못하겠네요. 9. 한국의 병역제도 (김신숙 - 메디치) 안보 사정이 사정이다보니 한국에선 예로부터 징병제와 군 복무에 대한 떡밥이 무성하지요. 떡밥이야 흥하지만 학술적 논의 수준은 거의 본 적 없고 대부분의 논의는 경험담이나 시사이슈 수준인데, 이 책은 드물게 한국에서의 징병제와 군 복무를 학술적으로 분석한 책입니다. 저자는 한국의 병역제도를 바탕으로 박사학위까지 받아본 적 있고, 국방부에서 관련 분야에 일하면서 병역제도를 많이 개선했던 사람이라(특성화고 학생들의 입대연기 허용, 상근예비역 조건 완화 등) 확실히 믿을만합니다. 읽으면서 병역제도 시스템 전반을 체계적으로 이해할 수 있었고, 일반인들은 생각하지 못하는 부분도 제법 긁어서 많이 신선하기도 했습니다. 수준 높게 징병제와 군 복무 문제를 논하고 싶어하는 분들에게 추천합니다. 10. AI 시대, 본능의 미래 (제니 클리먼/고호관 역 - 반니) 과거에 SF같았던 일들이 하나하나 현실화되는 시대에, 곧 유행할 첨단 과학기술의 현장에 가서 보고 느낀 바를 저술해 놓은 책입니다. 섹스로봇, 배양육, 인공자궁, 자동 자살기계는 이제 막연한 미래의 일이 아닙니다. 그렇기 때문에 디스토피아에 살지 않으려면 기술은 물론 윤리적인 논의가 필요한데, 이 책은 그 큰 틀을 이해하는데 도움이 될 겁니다. 전반적으로 좀 디스토피아를 우려하는 어두운 시선이 느껴지는데, 그 부분은 읽으면서 알아서 생각해봐야 할 것 같습니다. 크게 거슬리진 않았지만 기우처럼 보이는 우려도 좀 있었거든요.
