 티타임에 첫 맥주글로 무엇을 써볼까 생각하다가 많은 분들이 편의점이나 마트에서 접할 수 있는 네캔만원 맥주와 관련하여 써보자는 생각에 내맘대로 뽑은 [2020년 네캔만원 맥주 결산 Awards]를 개최해보았읍니다. 이 글은 지극히 저의 주관대로 쓰여졌기 때문에 다른 분들이 느끼는 것과 상당히 다를 수 있으니 주의바랍니다. ^^; 얼마 전에 탐라에서 시상부분 및 후보를 이미 예고했었읍니다. 탐라 링크: https://new.redtea.kr/?b=38&n=51047 그럼 바로 본론으로 들어가 시상을 하겠읍니다. [인기상] 후보: 곰표, 말표, 유미의 위트에일    * 곰표 사진을 미처 찍지 못하여 블로그에서 퍼온 사진으로 대체하였습니다. 출처: 네이버 블로그 - 지프리의 맥주일주 https://blog.naver.com/ljh0003/222106339495 수상자는 [곰표, alc. 4.5%] 코멘트) 인기상의 주인공은 올 한 해 가장 핫했던 편의점 맥주인 "곰표"입니다. TV 예능의 PPL로 대놓고 나올 정도니 말 다했죠. 라벨에 위트비어라고 되어있는데 독일식 바이젠도 벨기에식 윗비어도 하다 못해 미국식 위트비어도 아닌 무근본 K-위트비어입니다. 매니아 입장에서는 상당히 킹받는 퀄리티를 가진 물건입니다만 그건 중요하지 않다고 봅니다. 패션후르츠, 복숭아, 파인애플 추출물이 들어간 가볍고 깔끔한 스타일을 갖추어 인싸대중들에게 확실하게 어필이 되었고, 실제로 결과는 품절대란으로 이어졌으니까요. 무엇보다도 뉴트로한 느낌의 라벨이 상당히 마음에 들기도 하고요. 저는 처음 캔으로 마실 때 그리고 두 번째 병으로 마실 때까지도 미처 사진을 남기지 못하여 다시 구하려고 온동네 편의점을 다 돌아다녔지만 결국 구하지 못하고 퍼온 사진으로 대신하게 되었읍니다. [기량발전상] 후보: 상상 페일에일, 유미의 위트에일, 수퍼스윙 라거   수상자는 [수퍼스윙 라거, alc. 4.8%] 코멘트) 기량발전상은 "수퍼스윙 라거"가 차지하였읍니다. 수퍼스윙 라거는 대중들에게는 생소한 IPL(인디아 페일 라거) 스타일의 맥주입니다. IPL은 IPA(인디아 페일 에일)처럼 페일 라거의 알콜 도수를 올리고 홉을 강화한 맥주라 생각하시면 됩니다. (그런데 이 물건은 생각보다 도수는 많이 올라가지 않았네요.) 수퍼스윙 라거는 편의점에서는 쉽게 보기 힘든 맥주 스타일인 IPL을 대중에게 널리 알리게 된 맥주이고, 이것은 곧 국내 크래프트 맥주의 기량발전을 의미하기에 이 상을 수여하였읍니다. 페일 라거의 깔끔함을 잃지 않으면서 달달하고 화사한 홉 향을 잘 살린 제품으로 청량하고 음용성이 좋읍니다. 그리고 라벨 디자인도 아주 마음에 듭니다. [놀랍다상] 후보: 부두레인저 IPA, 말표, 유동골뱅이맥주   수상자는 [말표, alc. 4.5%] 코멘트) 놀랍다상의 영광은 출시 직전 기사부터 마시는 순간 그리고 마신 이후 까지 시종일관 저를 놀라게 했던 "말표"가 가져가게 되었읍니다. 출시 전 이 맥주가 나온다고 할 때부터 맥덕들을 상당히 킹받게 만드는 요소가 많았죠. "곰표"를 따라한 것도 그렇지만 맥주를 구두약 회사와 콜라보 한다는 것도 너무나 킹받게 놀라운 발상이었죠. 라벨도 정말 마음에 들지 않았고요. 그런데 실제 내용물은 정말로 반전이라 저를 또 놀라게 하더군요. 일단 맥주의 외관은 정말 마음에 들었읍니다. 색깔은 상당히 짙은 색이었고 거품도 적당히 유지가 되는 편이었네요. 향은 개인적으로는 그렇게 좋진 않았읍니다만 이것은 취향 차이로 갈릴 문제입니다. 맛은 적당히 달달하고 탄산감이 있어서 상당히 무난하게 마실 수 있었읍니다. 마시기 전에 이미 킹받은 상태여서 그런지 맛은 오히려 괜찮아서 더 놀라웠네요. 바밤바 느낌이 나는데 실제로 일반 대중들 뿐만 아니라 맥덕들 사이에서의 평가도 좋읍니다. 저는 이 맥주를 슈바르츠비어 계열의 라거로 예상했는데 실제로는 스타우트 계열의 에일이었다는게 마지막으로 또 저를 놀라게 했읍니다. [가성비상] 후보: 부두레인저 IPA, 부두레인저 쥬시 헤이즈 IPA, 라이언 스타우트   수상자는 [라이언 스타우트, alc. 8.8%] 코멘트) '아니 이정도 퀄리티를 네캔만원에 맛 볼 수 있다고?'라는 반응이 나오게 만드는 가성비상, 그 주인공은 바로 "라이언 스타우트"입니다. 라이언 스타우트는 우리나라에 수입이 되기 시작한 건 한 2년 전 쯤 입니다만 서서히 좋은 반응이 보이는 듯 하더니 올해 들어와서는 대형마트에서 상당히 잘 나가는 맥주입니다. 최근에는 품절이 많이 되어 오히려 구하기 힘들게 되었지요. 익스포트 스타우트 스타일로 임페리얼 스타우트 스타일보다는 한 단계 아래급이라 보시면 됩니다. 놀랍게도 스리랑카에서 만들어진 물건으로 맥주업계 권위자 중 한 명인 마이클 잭슨(여러분이 아는 그 분말고 다른 동명이인입니다...)이 극찬한 것으로 알려져 있읍니다. 초콜렛과 카라멜의 향과 풍미를 느낄 수 있으며 알콜 도수 8.8%임에도 알콜향은 거의 나지 않아 깔끔하게 음용성이 좋읍니다. 저는 이 물건이 한 5000원 쯤 한다고 해도 사먹을 것 같네요. [아쉽다상] 후보: 상상 페일에일, 유미의 위트에일, 순한 세션IPA  수상자는 [상상 페일에일, alc. 5.1%] 코멘트) 분명 더 잘 할 수 있었는데 조금은 아쉬웠던 맥주인 "상상 페일에일"에게 아쉽다상을 수여하게 되었읍니다. 제조사인 핸드앤몰트는 크래프트 브루어리 시절 "모카 스타우트"를 필두로 괜찮은 맥주들이 많이 있었읍니다만, 대기업 OB에 인수된 이후에는 아쉬운 행보를 많이 보여주고 있읍니다. 그래도 대기업 자본을 바탕으로 여러 가지 시도를 많이 하고 있는 점도 분명합니다. 그래서 "기량발전상"에도 "유미의 위트에일"과 함께 노미니 되었죠. 상상 페일에일은 라벨을 살펴보면 알 수 있듯 달콤하고 덜 쓴 페일에일을 지향하고 있읍니다. 실제로 꿀이 첨가되었는데 많이 달지는 않고 적당한 달달함을 가지고 있네요. 시트러스한 향도 있고 쓴 맛과 단 맛의 조화도 괜찮은데, 그래도 쓴 맛이 조금은 더해지는게 좋지 않았나하는 아쉬움이 있읍니다. 평소 라거 위주의 맥주를 많이 드시다가 페일 에일을 입문 해보시려는 분께 추천드립니다. [할많하않상] 후보: 제주 아워에일, 제주 슬라이스   수상자는 [제주 아워에일, alc. 4.4%] 코멘트) 할 말이 많지만 하지 않겠읍니다. [공로상] 후보: 스팀브루 임페리얼스타우트, 수퍼스윙 라거  수상자는 [스팀브루 임페리얼스타우트, alc. 7.5%] 코멘트) "스팀브루 임페리얼 스타우트", 이 물건은 분명히 아쉬움이 많이 남는 맥주입니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 공로상으로 이것을 선정한 이유는 편맥 네캔만원으로 임페리얼 스타우트를 접해볼 수 있다는 것 자체에서 대중들이 임페리얼 스타우트라는 스타일을 쉽게 입문할 수 있게 만든 공로가 있기 때문입니다. 이 물건은 "가성비상"을 수상한 익스포트 스타우트 스타일의 "라이언 스타우트" 보다도 도수가 낮으며 일반적인 임페리얼 스타우트가 가지는 짙은 향과 높은 바디감도 갖추고 있지 못 합니다. 하지만 네캔만원 맥주에 그 정도로 퀄리티를 바라면 그건 양심없는거 아니겠읍니까. 대중들이 이 맥주를 계기로 임페리얼 스타우트에 관심이 생겨 "올드 라스푸틴"이나 "드래곤즈 밀크" 같은 근본 임페리얼 스타우트를 접하게 된다면 맥덕 입장에서 정말 흐뭇할 것 같네요. [특별상] 후보: 구스 IPA, 홉 하우스 13   수상자는 [홉 하우스 13, alc. 5.0%] 코멘트) 특별상은 올해 나온 신상이나 급부상한 맥주가 아닌, 이미 자리잡은 맥주 중에서 수여하기로 하였고, 결국 "홉 하우스 13"으로 결정하였읍니다. 홉 하우스 13은 작년부터 이어져 온 일본 불매운동으로 대중들 사이에서 "필스너 우르켈"을 대체할 맥주로 인식되었읍니다. 물론 개인적으로는 필스너 우르켈을 완벽히 대체하지는 못 한다고 생각합니다만 편의점 호피 라거의 강자임에는 틀림이 없다고 봅니다. 열대과일 향을 내는 홉이 사용되었는데 그 느낌이 그렇게 강하지는 않고 오히려 허브 향 위주로 나는데요. 오히려 마셨을 때는 열대과일 풍미와 함께 맥아의 단 맛도 나는 편입니다. 함께 노미니 된 "구스 IPA"와 함께 편의점 맥주의 터줏대감으로 롱런할 것 같읍니다. [본상: 올해의 네캔만원상, 장려상, 우수상, 최우수상, 대상] 후보: 상상 페일에일, 수퍼스윙 라거, 빅슬라이드 IPA, 곰표, 말표, 덕덕구스 세션IPA, 스팀브루 저먼레드, 순한 세션IPA, 라이언 스타우트, 구미호 IPA     [올해의 네캔만원상] 수상자는 [구미호 IPA, 6.3%] [수퍼스윙 라거, alc. 4.8%] [덕덕구스 세션IPA, alc. 4.7%] [말표, alc. 4.5%] 코멘트) 올해의 네캔만원상은 최대한 스타일별로 분배하였고 한 편의점에서 모두 구할 수 있는 것으로 뽑았읍니다. IPA 1개, 라거 1개, 세션IPA 1개, 스타우트 1개를 뽑았으며, 이들은 모두 CU 편의점에서 구할 수 있읍니다. 각각의 맥주는 모두 따로 수여받은 상이 있기에 설명은 그것으로 대신하겠읍니다. [장려상] 수상자는 [스팀브루 저먼레드, alc. 7.9%] 코멘트) "스팀브루 저먼레드"는 "레드 에일"이란 스타일로 분류가 되어 있는데요. 이름과 알콜 도수로 유추해 보건데 실제로는 "도펠복" 스타일의 라거 맥주라 생각됩니다. 도펠복 스타일은 맥아, 즉 몰티함이 강화된 고도수 맥주입니다. 몰티한 맥주를 좋아하는 제가 상당히 좋아하는 스타일이기도 합니다. "장려상" 부문은 사실 이 물건과 "수퍼스윙 라거" 둘 중에 상당히 고민을 많이 하였읍니다만, 수퍼스윙 라거는 "기량발전상"과 "올해의 네캔만원상"에도 선정되었고 본상이 너무 호피한 맥주 위주가 되는 것 같아 결국 저먼레드의 손을 들어주었네요. 맥아의 카라멜 풍미와 구운 식빵 느낌이 나는데 생각보다 많이 달지는 않고 오히려 여타 도펠복 맥주보다 가벼운 편입니다. [우수상] 수상자는 [덕덕구스 세션IPA, alc. 4.7%] 코멘트) "구스 아일랜드 브루어리"는 "구스 IPA"를 필두로 오랫동안 편의점 맥주 시장 최강 대기업 브루어리로 군림해오고 있는데요. "덕덕구스 세션IPA"의 출시로 여전히 그 힘을 과시하고 있읍니다. "세션IPA"는 기존의 "IPA" 스타일이 가지고 있는 홉의 캐릭터를 살리면서 도수를 낮추고 깔끔한 음용성을 갖춘 맥주 스타일인데요. 라벨에 "IPA"라고 되어있는 것만 믿고 강한 것을 상상했던 분들에게는 "세션IPA"는 오히려 실망감을 줄 수도 있으니 주의하셔야 합니다. 덕덕구스는 상큼하게 다가오는 과일향이 너무나도 압도적일 뿐만 아니라 맛도 정말 깔끔하고 음용성도 대박이라 한 캔 5분 컷으로 꿀꺽할 수 있읍니다. 개인적으로 생각하기에는 편의점 네캔만원으로 만들어 낼 수 있는 최고의 퍼포먼스를 갖춘 세션IPA가 아닐까 합니다. [최우수상] 수상자는 [빅슬라이드 IPA, alc. 5.4%] 코멘트) 대상을 아쉽게 놓친 최우수상은 "빅슬라이드 IPA"에게 돌아갔읍니다. "올해의 네캔만원상"의 IPA 자리에 이 맥주가 들어가도 된다고 생각합니다. 플레이그라운드 브루어리는 올 겨울을 앞두고 호피 맥주 두 가지(수퍼스윙 라거, 빅슬라이드 IPA)를 편의점에 진출시켰는데요. 이는 편의점 맥주 시장에서 상당히 의미있는 일이라 생각합니다. 실제로 두 맥주 모두 네캔만원 수준에서는 퀄리티가 좋고 라벨도 마음에 듭니다. 빅슬라이드는 시트러스하고 열대과일스러운 홉 향을 순하게 잘 살렸으며 쓴 맛은 어느 정도 있으면서도 그렇게 세지는 않게 대중성을 고려한 듯 보입니다. 탄산감도 강하지 않고 약간의 몰티함이 가미되어 아주 마음에 드네요. 편의점에 가면 자주 찾을 것 같읍니다. 마지막으로 대망의 [대상] 수상자는 두구두구두구두구~ [구미호 IPA, 6.3%] 코멘트) "구미호 IPA", 편의점에서 이런 맥주를 접할 수 있게 될 줄 누가 알았겠읍니까. 감히 올해 최고의 편맥이라고 할 수 있겠읍니다. 라벨에는 진한 홉 향기가 난다고 되어 있는데, 생각보다 플로럴한 홉 향이 강하진 않고 잔잔합니다. 오히려 구수한 향이 나는 편이에요. 색깔 또한 몰트 캐릭터가 있을 것이라는 것을 말해주죠. 실제로 몰티함을 정말 잘 살렸으며 적당한 쓴 맛과의 조화도 일품입니다. 밸런스가 정말 좋아요. 또한 요즘에 나온 편맥 IPA 라인업 중 가장 높은 알콜 도수를 가지고 있다는 점도 주목할 만 합니다. 라벨도 뭔가 힙하고 깔쌈하네요. '마! 이게 전통의 IPA다 이말이야'라고 말하고 있는 듯 합니다. 개인적으로 이런 스타일을 아주 좋아하는지라 편의점 갈 때 자주 찾게 되지 싶어요. 아마도 당분간 편맥 최강자로 군림하지 않을까 예상합니다. 주의하실 점!
