[나는 죽지 않는다!] 03년 이라크 도시 팔루자는 미군의 점령을 거부하고, 저항세력을 끌어들이며 폭동을 일으켰습니다. 그렇게 뭉친 반군은 미군에 비해 두 가지 장점을 가졌습니다. 첫째, 팔루자는 그들이 태어나고 자란 탓에 속속들이 아는 도시였습니다. 둘째, 그들은 유리한 위치와 시간을 선택해 매복했다가 순찰하는 미군을 공격할 수 있었습니다. 수비는 공격보다 최소한 두 배로 유리하다는 통념까지 따지면 미군은 시가전에서 고전을 면치 못해야 정상이었습니다. 미국 언론도 베트남전을 거론하여 우려를 표했습니다. 하지만 전투는 예측과 다르게 흘러갔습니다. 근거리에서 치명타를 당한 게 아닌 이상 미 해병대 병사들은 별다른 부상 없이 일어났고, 그 후 자신을 쓰러뜨린 반군에게 총탄을 되돌려주었습니다. 물론 반군은 쉽게 일어나지 못했고요. 미군은 사열식에서 박격포탄을 맞아도, 지근거리에서 암살자가 쏜 권총탄도, RPG 로켓수류탄이 옆에서 터져도, 저격수의 저격도 웬만하면 튕겨냈습니다. 물론 사상자가 없지는 않았으나 반군보다 극히 적은 수준이었습니다. 2004년 11월 17일 결국 미군은 151명의 사망자만 낸 뒤 28만 명이 사는 도시를 재점령하는 데 성공합니다. 팔루자에 있던 이슬람원리주의자와 반군 테러리스트들은 1350명의 사망자를 내고 후퇴했습니다. 미군과 반군은 많은 차이가 있는 군대였으나 그중 가장 큰 차이는 바로 방탄복이었습니다. 나는 맞아도 죽지 않지만 너는 맞으면 죽는다는 감각은 보병들의 자신감을 북돋고, 훈련받은 능력을 백퍼센트 발휘 가능한 전투를 이끌었죠. 그 전통은 현재도 이어집니다. 유투브에는 검문소에 서 있다가 총격을 받고 쓰러진 뒤 다시 일어나는 영상, 기관총탄을 네 발이나 맞고도 멀쩡한 영상 들이 종종 올라옵니다. 이 모든 일들은 고대와 중근세 전사들이 꿈꾸며 간절히 그리던 순간입니다. 하지만 과학이 이루지 못했다면 그 꿈은 아직도 현실화되지 못한 채 그저 아련한 희망으로 남았을 겁니다. 인간의 연약한 몸을 총탄과 파편에서 지켜주는 방탄복. 어떤 과정을 통해 누가 실체화시켰고, 어떻게 만들어지고, 현재는 어디서 누가 어떻게 사용하는지 지금부터 파헤쳐 보겠습니다. [처음에는 주술로] 인류는 어떤 문화권이든 전쟁을 겪었고, 전쟁에서 진 문화권은 흡수되거나 전멸하여 살아남지 못했습니다. 해서 지금까지 살아남은 모든 문화권은 전쟁과 관련된 신화나 전설을 가지고 있습니다. 그 중 많은 얘기가 투창, 투석, 화살을 맞아도 죽지 않는 신비로운 방법을 다룹니다. 그리스 신화 속 영웅 아킬레우스가 가장 좋은 예겠죠. 그는 탄생 당시 불사의 향유 암브로시아에 몸을 담가 모든 무기 앞에 무적이었습니다. 투창을 맞으면 투창이 깨지고, 화살을 맞으면 화살이 미끄러졌습니다. 하지만 운명 앞에선 어쩔 수 없었던 걸까요? 전장에 선 그는 하필이면 산파의 손가락이 닿았던 발뒤꿈치에 화살을 맞아서 사망했습니다. 신이 준 액체로 이왕 하는 일, 위아래로 번갈아가며 두세 번 담갔으면 참 좋았을 텐데요. 근래 역사 속 사례로는 태평천국운동을 들 수 있습니다. 19세기 기존 정부와 외세에 맞서는 노선을 취했던 국가 태평천국. 그들은 부적을 태운 재를 물에 타서 마신 뒤 특정한 주문을 외우면 총알이나 포탄, 화살이 빗겨나간다고 믿었습니다. 물론 소망과 현실은 크게 달랐죠. [천과 철] 하지만 모든 고대인들이 노력 없이 소망만 한 것은 아니었습니다. 동양에서는 비단이 질기고 튼튼해서 화살을 어느 정도 막는 데 도움이 된다는 지식이 널리 알려졌습니다. 철제 갑옷과 함께 입거나, 너무 무거워 철제 갑옷을 입지 못할 경우 비단 옷을 입으면 좋다는 식이었습니다. 물론 비단은 같은 무게의 황금과 같은 가격이어서 지식을 실천할 수 있는 사람은 비교적 소수였지요. 대부분의 병사들은 천 갑옷이나 솜 갑옷, 가죽 갑옷처럼 생산성이 좋고 가격이 저렴한 물건을 썼습니다. 우리는 여기에서 목숨과 직업에는 귀천이 있다는 진실을 발견할 수 있습니다. [총알과 방탄복의 경주] 철제와 면제 갑옷으로 구성된 방어 체계의 역사는 16세기 중반 화약 무기가 실용화되면서 위기에 처했습니다. 큰 총알을 빠르게 발사시킬 수 있는 소총류의 방어는 사실상 불가능했고, 잘해 봐야 권총류를 막는 게 고작이었습니다. 참호 속이나 엄폐물 뒤가 아니면 총에 맞은 사람은 거의 쓰러졌습니다. 한편 발상은 좋았으나 재질에 문제가 있는 경우도 있었습니다. 1866년 프랑스와 전투를 치른 조선은 서양 총기류의 위력을 확인했습니다. 당시 실력자 대원군은 김기두와 안윤이라는 기술자들에게 명을 내려 이를 막을 방탄복을 만들라고 지시했죠. 기술자들은 철과 면 재질을 실험한 끝에 면 13겹을 겹친 면갑을 제작합니다. 대량 배치된 면갑은 1871년 미국의 침략 분쟁 신미양요 때 실전을 경험합니다. 강화도 수비군이 입은 면갑은 각도와 속력에 따라 총탄을 막는 데 성공합니다. 대신 파카 입은 것처럼 엄청 더웠고, 부피가 커 동작에 방해가 되었습니다. 또한 재질의 한계로 포격이 일으킨 화재에 착용자가 불타는 사고도 있었습니다. 면갑에 흥미를 느낀 미군은 이 면 방탄복을 수거하여 분석하였고, 2007년까지 미 스미소니언 박물관에 전시했다가 한국에 반환했습니다. [강철의 대중화] 시대가 흘러 산업시대가 되었습니다. 탄소를 알맞게 넣은 강철이 탄생하면서 방탄복 쪽이 총알보다 살짝 앞서게 됩니다. 1880년 호주에서는 갱단이 트랙터에 달린 강철 쟁기를 분해해서 만든 방탄복을 입고 경찰과 총격전을 벌였습니다. 앗, 어디서 본 이야기 아닌가요? 토니 스타……. 동시대 미국에서는 짐 밀러라는 무법자가 옷 위에 강철 갑옷을 착용하고 돌아다녔습니다. 이 강철 갑옷 스타일 방탄복은 산탄총과 권총 같은 소구경에 강한 모습을 보여줬습니다. 착용자는 법 집행관 6인이 쏘는 총탄 속에서도 목숨을 보전했습니다. 문과 나온 토니 스타크가 아이언맨 만들 듯 개인이 얼기설기 만드는 강철 방탄복과 달리, 동양에서 유래된 비단 방탄복은 제품화의 길로 접어듭니다. 1914년 당시 비단 방탄복은 2016년 현재 한화로 환산하면 5천만 원이라는 어마어마한 가격에도 정부 주요 요인이 챙겨 입는 실용적인 물건이었습니다. 평상시 생활 중 휴대가 불가능한 소총은 제외하고 권총과 단검은 막을 수 있었거든요. 비단 방탄복을 선호한 직종이 또 하나 있었습니다. 바로 미국 갱단이었습니다. 자신이 불러온 재앙에 짓눌린 갱들은 총과 비단 방탄복을 항시 챙기는 습관을 들여야 했죠. 1차대전이 터지자 강철 방탄복은 드디어 대량생산 체계의 일환이 되었습니다. 대부분의 국가는 무게를 고려해, 기체에 탑승한 채 움직이지 않는 비행기 폭격수에게 우선 지급하였습니다. 다른 나라와 달리 독일은 보병에게 적극적으로 지급했어요. 영국은 참호전을 극복하기 위해 탱크를 동원했는데 맞상대한 독일은 상대적으로 탱크 생산량이 떨어졌습니다. 따라서 이미 풍부한 인적 자원을 동원해 대전차 전술을 구상하다 보니 특수 병력에게 특수한 복장을 입히자는 쪽으로 결정이 납니다. 경기관총, 집적수류탄, 강철과 니켈 복합소재 방탄복으로 무장한 이들을 스톰 트루퍼라고 부릅니다. 이들은 영화 <스타워즈>에 강렬한 영감을 주었습니다. [새로운 주인공, 복합소재] 강철 등 금속은 무게 문제, 비단 등 천 소재는 강성이 부족했습니다. 2차대전 전후 재료 공학과 화학이 급속도로 발달하면서 군부와 기업은 복합소재로 눈을 돌립니다. 1944년 미군은 유리 섬유로 만든 도런(Doron) 방탄복을 개발해 1945년 오키나와 전투에 참전한 전투원들에게 지급합니다. 한국 전쟁 중에는 나일론에 강화 섬유을 섞고, 알루미늄 조각을 배치해 만든 M-1951을 포함, 서너 가지의 방탄복이 미군에게 지급되었습니다. 사실 이 시기의 방탄복은 엄밀히 말하면 방편복, 즉 고속으로 날아오는 파편을 막는 옷이라고 불러야 옳습니다. 소총탄이나 기관총탄의 직격을 막을 수 있는 제품은 없었기 때문입니다. 하지만 그렇다고 아예 가치가 없느냐? 그렇지는 않았죠. 대규모 병력이 부딪히는 전장에서는 포탄과 박격포탄이 최악의 살인마입니다. 바닥에 부딪히거나 공중에서 폭발한 포탄의 파편, 포탄에 깨진 바닥의 돌 조각과 목재 조각, 옆에 있던 전우가 죽으면서 몸이 터져 칼날처럼 변한 뼛조각 등이 연약한 인체를 파고듭니다. 이때 방편복이 있다면 사망자는 중상자로, 중상자는 경상자로, 경상자는 멀쩡한 상태로 한 단계씩 내려가는 일이 가능한 것이죠. 여기에 한국 전쟁부터 도입된 구조 헬기를 더해 병사들의 생존률은 급상승합니다. 어쨌든 총알은 방탄복을 확실히 앞섰습니다. 무려 1980년대까지 총알은 방탄(편)복을 뚫고 많은 사람들을 쓰러뜨렸습니다. 총알의 독주는 케블러가 개발되면서 주춤합니다. 케블러는 1971년 화학자 스태파니 퀄렉이 발명했습니다. 케블러는 강철보다 다섯 배의 인장 강도를 지닌 엄청난 소재입니다. 즉 천이면서 강철보다 강한 물질인 것이죠. 강철 방탄복이 가졌던 장점은 전부 가져오면서 단점인 과도한 무게는 완전히 줄인 획기적인 제품이었습니다. 미국 법무부는 평가를 거쳐 케블러 소재는 실용화가 가능한 수준이며, 소속 법 집행관에게 지급할 만한 가치가 있다고 판정했습니다. 경찰에서 인 파도는 민간으로 퍼집니다. 1975년에는 전면에 철판을 넣은 케블라복, 1976년에는 통짜 케블러 방탄복이 출시됩니다. 80년대 후반에는 위험지역을 순찰하는 경관들은 위험 지역을 순찰할 때 케블러 방탄복을 착용하는 게 일상이 되었습니다. 경찰과 민간의 선택은 미군까지 이어집니다. 미군은 PASGT(지상군을 위한 개인 방어 시스템의 약자)를 개발해 월남전까지 사용했던 M-69 방탄복을 퇴출시킵니다. PASGT는 권총탄 수준의 총탄이나 충격에 대한 실질적인 저지력을 지녔다는 장점이 있었습니다. 미군은 한층 더 나아가 세라믹 판이 앞뒤에 붙은 증가 장갑형 방탄복 ISAPO를 개발합니다. 소총탄 방어가 가능한 ISAPO는 무게가 7.5킬로그램이었으며 차세대 방탄복 개발 전까지 특수부대처럼 고위험 임무군 병사들이 PASGT 위에 결합해서 입을 예정이었습니다. 재원상 성능은 만족스러운 수준이었고, 초반 반응도 좋았습니다. 하지만 미군은 만족하지 않고 현장의 많은 사용자들에게 의견 및 불만을 모았습니다. 우선 무겁다는 의견이 나왔습니다. 먼저 쏘는 입장에서는 위치 노출과 탄환 소모를 인풋으로 넣고 두두두두 하고 갈기는데 맞은놈이 벌떡 일어나서 위치가 노출되고 탄도 소모되고 방탄복도 없는 나를 상대로 총구를 겨누기 시작하면 그야말로 요단강이 눈앞에 어른거리고
이걸 옆에서 보는 입장에서는 더욱 더 소극적으로 변할 수 밖에 없겠네요.
