거시적인 관점으로 세상을 파악하길 좋아하는 사람이라 생각하는 본인은 세상이 돌아가는 원리 혹은 현 시대의 흐름을 생각하고자 노력하곤 합니다. 그러나 제한된 정보와 편협한 사고방식은 논리가 빈약한 결론에 이르곤 하고 내가 쉽게 내린 결론을 맞다고 생각하는 오류를 만들곤 했습니다. 이러한 오류를 개선해 나가는 방법은 새로운 정보를 접하거나 다른 사람과 나의 생각을 교류하며 생각을 수정해 나가는 것인데, 히키코모리인 본인은 이러한 생각들을 펼쳐보일 방법이 적었습니다. 그래서 오류투성이의 좁은 생각을 이 게시판에 올림으로서 나의 무지를 깨닫고 더 넓은 생각으로 향하고자 합니다. 제가 생각하기에 현 시대의 기술 혹은 기업들의 관심사는 "얼마나 사람들의 관심을 빼앗을 것인가?"라 생각합니다. 여기서 관심이라는 단어를 먼저 정의하고 그 다음 위의 문장에 대해 이야기를 더 진행해보겠습니다. 저는 인간의 관심 용량은 제한적이라 생각합니다. 마치 컴퓨터의 휘발성 메모리와 같이 8GB메모리를 가진 사람은 그 중 7~8GB를 담을 수 있고, 그것을 넘기려면 기존에 저장되어있는 메모리를 지워야 합니다. 이것이 습관이라고도 할 수 있지만 그 습관은 결국 나의 뇌 속에 담겨진 관심사의 양 정도라 할 수 있겠죠. 인간의 뇌를 어떻게 바라볼 것인가? 저는 장기기억장치와 단기기억장치가 있다고 생각하며, 이 단기기억장치를 메모리 혹은 관심이라 부르겠습니다. 인간의 메모리에 실제로 들어가있는 용량은 곧 관심사의 양이고, 메모리 용량은 기억력의 정도, 잠을 잠으로서 메모리를 매일 리프레쉬 시키기도 하고, 다양한 표현을 통해 메모리를 효율적으로 정리하여 장기기억으로 넘어가고 있다고 생각합니다. 여기서 우리가 관심가질 부분은 기업은 우리의 관심의 크기를 가져가는 것을 목표로 한다는 것에 있습니다. 기업 이야기를 하기 전에 연애 이야기를 먼저 해볼까요. 흔히 여성분들이 남성에게 다양한 질문을 하며 사랑을 확인하곤 하는데, 그 대답을 어떻게 할 지에 대해서 남성분들은 잘 모를때가 많습니다. 질문에 대한 응답을 연구하기 때문이지요. 그러나 사랑을 확인하고자 하는 질문들의 요지는 결국 남성의 머릿속에 여성에 대한 관심을 얼마나 가지고 있느냐? 정도를 확인하는 것일 수 있습니다. 질문의 역할은 관심을 가지고 있는지에 대한 확인이요, 가지고 있지 않다면 다시 일깨워주는 역할인 것이죠. 흔히 여성이 사소하게 던진 행동이나 말을 기억하는 남자를 좋아한다고 하는데, 사실 그 사소한 것을 캐치한다는 것은 그만큼 상대방에게 관심이 있다는 하나의 증거이지, 그 사소한 것을 기억하는 것에만 집중하는 남자는 본질에 떨어져 있다고 말할 수 있습니다. 뭐 대충 관심이라는 것을 연애에 적용시키면 이런 이야기를 할 수 있겠다 정도? 그냥 생각나서 해본 말입니다. 쨋든 이 관심이라는 것을 기업에선 진짜 다 뺏으려고 어마무시한 노력을 합니다. 인스타그램을 한 번 볼까요? 인스타그램에서 사람들에게 관심을 뺏을만한 요소는 참 많습니다. "상대방이 나를 언급했습니다.", "누군가가 나를 팔로잉했습니다.", "누군가가 나를 스토리에서 언급했습니다.", "누군가가 나를 태그했습니다." , "누군가가 나의 글에 댓글을 달았습니다.", "누군가가 나의 글에 좋아요를 눌렀습니다." 나라는 인간은 이 인스타그램 앱에 관심을 가지지 않을 수가 없습니다. 그 내용이 어떻게 되었든 그건 중요하지 않습니다. 결론은 나의 머릿속에는 이 인스타그램이라는 것이 꽤 중요하게 들어가게 됩니다. 나의 관심에 인스타그램이 들어가며, 자연스레 인스타그램을 위해 사진을 찍고 올리고 생각하고 관계하는 것은 하나의 습관이 됩니다. 그럼 유튜브는 어떨까요. 뭐 비슷한 맥락이라 설명하진 않고, 조금은 다른 앱인 요기요 앱을 생각해볼까요? 이 배달어플은 주기적으로 쿠폰을 뿌립니다. 그리고 배달을 시킨 이후에도 리뷰를 쓰라고 알람을 줍니다. 그리고 매 월초가 되었을 때 주문량에 따른 쿠폰을 뿌립니다. 그리고 비정기적인 이벤트를 하며 사람들이 계속 이 어플에 관심을 가지도록 노력합니다. 사실, 한 달에 배달주문을 하는 횟수는 정해져 있으나 이 어플에 들어가게되는 시간을 훨씬 많아지게 됩니다. 잊을만 하면 이 어플에 관심을 가지도록 하는 것이죠. 카카오뱅크를 볼까요? 카카오뱅크는 그저 은행 앱인데 신기한 장치를 해놓습니다. 저금통이라는 것인데요. 매일 일정 금액을 자동으로 저금하게 하고 2%의 이율을 준다고 유혹합니다. 근데 이 저금통을 만들면 알림을 주구장창 줍니다. 매일 몇 백원을 저금했다고 알림을 띄우고, 매월 5일에는 저금통 금액을 엿보는 날이라는 것을 뿌리고, 또 저금이 끝나면 끝났다고 알림을 줍니다. 카카오뱅크가 사람들에게 입출금 외에 당당하게 알람을 줄 수 있는 장치를 만든 것이죠. 카카오페이는 어떠한가요? 카카오페이로 결제를 하면 그냥 결제로 끝나지 않습니다. 항상 리워드라는 것을 주죠. 그건 자동으로 되지 않고 내가 직접 클릭해야 합니다. 그걸 위해 카카오톡을 한 번 더 켜야하고 리워드를 한 번 더 켜야하며, 관련된 이벤트 광고를 한 번 더 봐야합니다. 사실 리워드에서 주는 금액은 크지 않으나 그것에 들어가는 나의 메모리는 어마어마하게 잡아먹습니다. 개인의 메모리를 얼마나 잡아먹고 그것을 습관화 시켰느냐가 기업의 성패를 갈라놓는다고 생각합니다. 그래서 기업들은 끊임없이 다양한 알람의 요소를 만들기도 하고, 틱톡처럼 더욱 자극적인 영상이 쌓이도록 하기도 하며, 유튜브처럼 내가 좋아할 만한 영상을 내 취향을 예측하여 알고리즘을 이용해 영상을 추천하되 보통 자극적인 영상일 가능성이 높아집니다. 기업들은 나의 정보를 최대한으로 끌어내고 나를 분석하곤 하는데, 그것에 끝판왕에 있는 기업이라 하면 구글이나 페이스북 정도가 되겠죠. 윈도우10과 맥OS에서 예전에 비해 강화된 기능이 있습니다. 바로 알림인데요. 맥에서도 알림기능은 강화되고 있고, 윈도우에서도 예전엔 알람이라는 것이 없었지만 지금은 꽤나 강력하게 쓰이고 있습니다. 이 알림기능의 가장 큰 목적은 역시 사람들에게 관심을 빼앗아오긴 위한 중요한 장치라 할 수 있겠습니다. 여러분은 오늘 하루 무엇을 했는지 기억할 수 있나요? 아니면 이번주에 무슨 일이 있었으며, 이번 달에 어떠한 일들을 했었는지 기억할 수 있나요? 추측컨데 이러한 기업들의 메모리관심사조작의 시대에 살고있는 우리는 과거를 기억하는 능력을 잃어가는 방향으로 살고있으며, 하루하루 너무나 습관화된 어플들을 위해 시간을 보내고 있기 떄문에 기억할 만한 거리가 없다고도 할 수 있겠습니다. 그리고 자극적인 관심사들은 우리의 잠의 효율도 줄여가는 방향으로 가고 있지는 않을까? 하는 비약적인 생각도 해봅니다. 기업은 개인의 정보를 최대한 가져가는 방향으로 가져가서 개인의 행동패턴을 예측하려 합니다. 요즘은 스마트스피커가 생각보다 저렴하게 팔려나가는 것을 볼 수 있는데, 아마 그 이유는 그 장치들이 단순한 스피커가 아니라, 우리가 말하는 다양한 정보를 취득하는 장치이자 동시에 알림 역할을 하는 장치이기 때문일 겁니다. 애플이 고급 스피커를 99달러에 파는게 결코 좋은 스피커를 만드는 의미만 있는 것은 아니라 생각합니다. 그럼 이러한 시대에 우리는 무엇을 해야 할까요? 그건 저도 모르겠습니다. 제가 할 수 있는 것은 수동적인 대응이랄까요. 유튜브와 인스타그램 어플을 사용하지 않으며, 웹페이지의 정보는 RSS로 얻습니다. 그리고 쓰잘데기없이 알림을 주는 어플은 최대한 삭제하는 방향으로 나가거나, 알림 자체를 꺼놓는 방향으로 둡니다. 그리고 내가 능동적으로 관심사라 할 수 있는 부분에 관심을 가지겨 그것에 대해 글을 쓰는 정도를 하는 것이죠. 가만히 있으면 자연스레 나의 메모리를 잠식당하기 좋은 시대인 것 같습니다. 능동적으로 나의 관심을 이끌어나가면서 나의 삶을 좀 더 풍요롭게 할 수 있지 않을까? 하는 마음에 이 글을 작성해 봅니다. 저 혼자만의 생각이고 누군가와 이런 이야기를 해본 적이 없기에 오류투성이일 것이라 생각하는데, 이 글에 대한 생각을 적어주시면 너무 감사하겠습니다. * Cascade님에 의해서 티타임 게시판으로부터 게시물 복사되었습니다 (2020-11-24 12:23) * 관리사유 : 추천게시판으로 복사합니다. 애서가로서 몇 년 전부터 독서의 질이 떨어진 걸 많이 느낍니다. 어려운 책들을 많이 읽는 사람으로서, 독서량 자체가 준 건 아닌데, 독서와 스마트폰질을 반복하는 경우도 많고, 설렁설렁 읽다가 이해가 안돼서 되돌아갈 때가 정말 많아졌어요. 그리고 책의 큰 틀은 기억이 잘 되지만 세부적인 내용은 잘 기억하지 못합니다.
책은 그나마 낫고, 인터넷 글들은 나도 모르게 건너뛰거나 훑게되어서 글을 처음부터 다시 정독해야하는 경우가 정말 많습니다. 지금 쓰는 구글이 탭기능이 있다니 탭을 잔뜩 띄워놓고 이거 10초 보고 저거 10초 보고 정작 정독은 안하는 버릇까지 생겼어요.
그리고 글을 쓸때는 일직선으로 쓰는게 아니라 여기 쓰고 저기 쓰고 불규칙하게 쓰는 나쁜 버릇도 생겼고요. (지금 이 글을 쓰면서도 이럽니다...) 일도 이거 조금 하고 저거 조금 하는 식으로 유사-멀티태스킹 방식으로 하게됩니다. 방식이 워낙 비효율적인지라 차마 멀티태스킹이라고 할 수가 없어요...
책을 읽는 걸 좋아하고, 학구열이 강하고 대학원에 갈 사람도 이러니, 평범한 사람들은 오죽하겠습니까. 요즘 청년세대가 난독증이 심각하다는데, 정보를 텍스트도 아닌 유튜브 영상으로 접하는 세대가 난독증이 안 온다면 그게 이상한 일입니다.
정보가 넘쳐나는 시대에 글을 꼭 정독하는 것은 불가능하지만, 최소한 정독이 글 읽는 기본적인 방식임은 숙지시켜야 하는데 잘 되지 않지요.
