먼저 이 질문이 '질문을 위장해서 교묘하게 상대를 공격하려는' 의도로 쓰인 게 아니라는 것부터. 주말에 있던 시위가 워낙 뜨거운 이슈다보니, 스리슬쩍 질문을 위장해서 날카롭게 콕콕 찌르는 시도가 분명 있을 것 같네요. 저는 그런 의도로 질문 글을 쓴 게 아니고, 정말로 질문하려는 내용에 대해 깊게 고찰해보지 못해서, 깊게 공부해보지 못해서, 자문자답 중에 막혀서 글을 쓰게 됐습니다. 미리 깊은 고민을 해보신 분들이 잘 풀어서 설명해주시길 부탁드려요. ---------------------- 주말에 정말 큰 규모의 시위가 있었고, 그 과정에서 시위에 참여한 시민들과 질서를 유지하려던 경찰들 사이에서 위험한 장면들이 많이 나왔습니다. 저는 물대포에 몸을 그대로 강타당해 생명이 위험해진 사람의 모습도 봤고, 격렬한 시위 끝에 창문이 부서진 경찰 버스 사진도 봤습니다. 폭력 시위다 과잉 진압이다 말은 많은데 제 생각엔 시위에 참가한 시민들과 경찰들 모두 평범한 선은 넘은 부분이 섞여있는 것 같아요. 어느 한 쪽 표현만 맞다고 하면 그게 더 이상할 것 같고요. 시민 얼굴에 물대포를 쏘는 장면이나, 미리 과격 사태를 예상하고 차벽을 둘러친 것은 제 생각엔 '과잉 대응'이라는 표현이 맞는 것 같아요. 이 표현에 대해선 저는 맞는 말이라고 생각해요. 그런데 한편으론 반대쪽에서 나오는 말인 '폭력 시위'라는 표현에 대해선 다양한 생각이 듭니다. 벽처럼 둘러 쳐진 경찰 버스를 밧줄로 끌어당기는 것, 버스 창문을 깬 것, 경찰에게 덤비는 것. 이건 분명히 법을 위반하는 행동이 맞는 것 같아요(어느 법이냐고 하면 법알못이라서...). 하지만 인터넷에서 이렇게 '위법 행위다'라는 지적이 나오면, 바로 밑에는 이를 반박하는 내용들이 주루룩 달리더라고요. 유럽/북미 지역의 시위도 마찬가지라는 말도 나오고, 시위하는데 있어서 이런 소요 사태는 필연적인 거라는 식으로 옹호를 하는 내용들이요. 또 이런 말도 봤습니다. 조용히 조용히, 법을 지키면서 평화롭게 시위하면 얻을 수 있는 게 아무것도 없기 때문에 시끄럽게 들고 일어나야 한다고. 혹은, 악법도 법이라 해서 무조건적인 복종을 하라고 한다면 그건 저항을 하지 말라는 말이나 다름 없다고요(여기서 악법이 뭘 말하는진 모르겠습니다. 현 시위 관련 법들이 지나치게 시민의 권리를 옭아매고 있다는 뜻인가요? 저는 정말로 내용을 몰라서 판단할 수가 없었습니다.). 음... 90년대 이전에 있던 민주화 운동 얘기를 떠올려 보면 일견 맞는 말인 것 같습니다. 유신 정부가 긴급조치를 내리고 계엄령을 내린다고 해서, 그게 법이라고 해서 무조건 따라야 한다고 하면, 그런 조치에 항거하면서 당시 법을 어긴 민주화 투사들은 다들 '폭력 시위자'가 되는 건가? 이렇게 생각해보니 그건 아닌 것 같아요. 반대로 이런 생각도 듭니다. 근데 2015년이 70년대, 80년대랑 같지는 않잖아? 평화적으로 촛불 시위도 했었는데, 굳이 저렇게 차벽 끌어내리고 밧줄 준비해가고 그래야만 했을까? ----------------------------- 솔직히 지금 제 머릿속에선 두 가지 생각이 팽팽하게 맞붙은 상태라서 어느 쪽으로 답을 내리질 못하겠습니다. 시위를 하는 사람들의 목소리를 존중해야 한다고 생각합니다. 자신의 의견을 자유롭게 표명하는 건 좋은 일이에요. 하지만 그 방법에 대해선 솔직히 완전히 납득이 되지는 않는 상태입니다. 역사적인 사례나 해외의 사례를 들어서 설명하는 것들로는 뭔가 충분하단 생각이 들지 않아요. '프랑스는 그러더라, 미국은 그러더라'라고 해서 그게 반드시 옳다는 뜻은 아니니까요. 그 생각 기저에 있는 근거가 무엇일까, 그게 궁금합니다. 솔직하게 풀어쓰다보니 중고등학생으로 돌아간 느낌이... 여태 나이를 헛먹었나... ㅡㅡ; 아무튼 시원하게 답을 알려주실 분 없으신가요?
