우주선 챌린저 호가 폭발한 원인은 이렇게 설명이 되어 있습니다. '1986년 1월 28일 발사한 지 73초 만에 폭발한 우주왕복선 챌린저호 사고도 단위 때문에 생겨난 참극이었다. 당시 NASA는 챌린저호를 실은 로켓 외벽 이음새의 고무 링에 문제가 생기면서 연료가 흘러나와 폭발했다고 발표했다. 다른 모든 부품은 미터 기준으로 제작됐는데 이중으로 만들어진 고무링이 미터가 아닌 인치(inch)를 기준으로 제작돼, 부품 간의 수치 차이로 미세한 오류가 생겨 정확하게 밀봉되지 않았던 것이다.' 저 고무링을 어떻게 제작하는지는 모르겠는데 아마도 NASA과학자들 중 어떤 팀일 것이고 문제의 시초를 찾다 보면 수면에 드러나는 사람이나 그룹이 있을 것 같습니다. 하청에 맡기는 것일 수도 있겠고요. 그런데 그런 저격성 내지 책임추궁성 지목에 대해 들어본 적이 없는 것 같아요. 적발을 해야한다는 것이 아니라 한국사회가 사고에 접근하는 방식과 매우 다르고 그런 면이 좋아 보인다는 생각을 했습니다. 한편 제가 우주선 부품 제작과정에 대해 아는 것이 전혀 없으니 이건 그런 추궁이 불가능한 구조인가란 생각도 들었습니다. 혹시 조금 납득이 가도록 설명해 주실 수 있는지 궁금합니다. 폭발원인 자체가 인치-미터법 차이때문이 아닌거같아요 인터넷엔 저런 글이 많은데 뭔가 인터넷발 소설 아닌가 싶습니다.....
더 찾아보면 폭발원인은 고무링이 터진건데 그 원인은 인치-미터법 차이 때문이 아니고 온도 때문인거같더라고요.
저온에서는 고무가 실온에서처럼 탄성을 갖지 못하는 것 때문에 고무링이 터졌고, 그래서 연료가 새어나와 폭발했다고 보는 것 같습니다.
인치-미터는 1인치-2.54센치니 숫자 상 차이가 커서 그것때문에 미세한 오차가 생겼을까 싶더라고요.
